Neo-biography

Note: this bio was not written to be self-congratulatory or to insinuate I am better than anyone else here. Its purpose is threefold: to entertain and inform anyone actually curious, to demonstrate that anyone determined to achieve a measure of success on this game can if they are willing to put the effort in, and to remind me where I came from. Enjoy. :)

I started playing Neopets on February 13, 2003 after my wife convinced me to try out this 'cool site' she found. I did, and have been playing ever since. I chose the name 'bobajfett' because all the other names I wanted were already taken. Fett was one of my favorite Star Wars characters so I went with that. So why the J? Well, being that Boba's father was Jango I figured it made sense that Boba's middle initial would be J.

Anyway, I started with a Shoyru named Fygar_jr, but all along I knew I wanted a Draik, so I saved up (with a little help from winning 100k off the lottery -- the only time I've ever won), bought a Draik MP for around 150k, created a Scorchio named Ryo_Smohki, and morphed him into a Draik. Incidentally, the name Ryo_Smohki is a variation of Ryo Ohki, a character from the Tenchi anime series (Draik = dragon = fire = smohki, get it? haha :P).

The first 11 months or so on Neo I didn't do much. I pretty much played games, scratchcards, and the stock market to make np's. I dabbled a little in restocking (or 'trying to buy stuff from the shops' as I called it back then), but didn't really know what I was doing. Heck, back then I thought if I got a Medicinal Soap I had a good day rsing. All in all, I'd say I made roughly 10 mil during my first year playing. As far as training went, I did a little training at the training school and bought a lab map but that was pretty much it. As far as the rest of the site went, I didn't do much. I rarely battled, never went on the chats, and missed the Darigan War.

January of 2004 was when things began to change for me on Neo. The Lord Kass plot was beginning and I thought it would be interesting to fight in it. Naturally, I went to the BD Chat to see what advice/weapon tips I could get -- and I ended up getting much more than I bargained for. It was there I learned I had really only scratched the surface of Neopets. I discovered there were a lot more ways to make np's (rsing, auction sniping, wiz sniping) and that my 50 hp pet wasn't anything even close to resembling a strong pet. I started to learn to rs and began to use what np's I had to buy a battle set and train up Ryo (while Fygar was my main pet at the time, the lab had made his stats so unbalanced I couldn't afford to train them back up to even -- which, of course, is why I caution people now against labbing as their only means of training). So, by the time the war actually began (3/10/2004), I was ready to march off to the battledome with my 55 str. boost pet, armed to the teeth with a Zap2k, Battle Duck, Snowglobe Staff, Leaf Shield, Downsize!, Red SS, and a pile of Snowballs.

Well, it doesn't take a genius to figure out my draik got his tail handed to him in fairly short order. That being the case I decided to put everything I had into training and weapon upgrades. Between selling off almost all my stocks and learning the ins and outs of rsing I finished the Kass war at the end of April 2004 with a 125hp/125str pet and a battle set that included a h4k helm, Green SS, FaIB, Sinsis Sword, and a Honey Potion. So after much battling and scraping (and quite a few losses) I eked out 1k war points for the Kass war. While it was nice to make 1k, it just wasn't enough. I wanted to do better, much better, the next war so I got rid of all my pets except Ryo and committed myself to training his stats as high as I could before the next war came up.

On May 20, 2004 came the event that completely changed my fortunes on Neopets. I was lucky enough to cove a Super Attack Pea. (Funny story - I had thought I missed it and like a good n00b I made a board complaining about missing it, only to later check my inventory and find a SuAP sitting there. Talk about embarassing. :/) By selling it for a complete battle set I was then able to put all my np's into training. I also continued to spend a considerable amount of time working on my rsing skills to get to a point where I was reasonably competent and also took up learning to auction snipe, particularly when I was rs banned.

In June and July I had the great fortune of meeting my 2 best friends on Neopets: shaggy1414 in June and thirdtimeout in July. They are as great of friends as a person could ever ask for, particularly since they're still around despite having to put up with me. ;P

Fast forward ahead to November of 2004 and the HATIC war. I was really pumped up for that war, having been able to train Ryo to over 800 hp and having a decent battle set. Fighting on the thieves side, I was able to greatly improve on my 1k score from the Kass war. Despite the lag and a war prize that was little more than a glorified letter-opener I really enjoyed the HATIC war because I felt that all the work I had put into training Ryo had paid off.

Fast forward to April 4, 2005, where all the training I put into Ryo finally landed him in the top 50 pets and fast forward again to the present, where I am now a member of an awesome guild, the Shadow Domers, and the CoM war has just ended. I was able to pull off the top rank 2 score, largely in part to being just under the rank 3 cutoff, leaving Ryo the strongest pet in rank 2. And that pretty much sums up my history on Neopets. From here, well, who knows what the future will bring. :)

Have you seen me lately?

RS screenies on roadkill's petpage.

Who's the swordmaster draik now?

1st ever win against a 20k hp opponent.

Answers to Common Questions

Q: How do you raise your pets hit points?
A: Beat it with a stick. Toughens up their skin.

Q: Erm... ok. So how do you raise strength, then?
A: Drop a piano on it. It'll get stronger trying to push it off.

Q: How'd you get your draik's stats up like that?
A: By feeding him Kadoaties. Muahahaha! *mew*

Q: How do you make Neopoints?
A: I dunno. Go to the Neopian Mint and take the tour. They'll prolly show you how they're made.

Q: How did you get all those trophies?
A: I steal them from people with my Heavy Robe of Thievery.

Q: How many neopoints do you have?
A: Not enough.

Q: What should I use to beat Kasuki Lu/Meuka/etc?
A: A pet with weapons equipped is your best bet.

Q: How do you win at auctions?
A: By having the last bid when time runs out.

Q: How did you get a Draik?
A: I don't know. He just followed me home from Meridell one day. I think the bag of steaks I was carrying had something to do with it.

Q: Why is it the rich get richer and the poor stay poor?
A: My take on it is 'the rich get richer and the poor stay poor because the poor spend all their time complaining about rich people instead of making neopoints." Rich people don't get it handed to them here. I don't wake up every morning with a free Snegg and SoS in my inventory. I didn't get handed a bank acct with 10 mil and a thyoras tear when I opened my account. I started with absolutely nothing, just like everyone else. I have been handed nothing by neopets along the way. Everything I have now is the result of putting the time in to learn the game and working each day to get better, not by sitting on my tushie whining about what everyone else has. You get out of this game what you put into it. I have no sympathy for those who cry over having nothing when they put forth no effort.

*** BD TIPS & STRATEGIES ***

GENERAL TIPS

~ TRAINING: Memorize the following sentence: THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING! Good weapons will only get you so far - if you want to fight the best, you're going to need the stats to back it up. Using a Ghostkersword with a 20 hp pet is useless if your opponent can take you down over 20 hp's in a round even while you're defending.

There are several ways to train your pet: the Training School on Mystery Island, the Swashbuckling Academy on Krawk Island, Kitchen Quests (Mystery Island), Faerie Quests (random events), scratchcards (level only), the Lab Ray (see Lab Ray section), shrooms, certain potions, and Neggs.

- Training Sch./Academy - should be done daily. I prefer Training School over the Academy - it usually costs less.
Note: You cannot train any stat, except hit points, over 2 x pet's level - if you have a stat over 2 x level, the schools will not let you train anything other than level. Your hp's (endurance) can be trained to 3x level, but there's a catch: If you train endurance to 3x level you cannot train any other stat until your level is trained back up to half your endurance.

- Kitchen Quests - complete one and you'll get either around 1000nps, an item, or a random pet will have a random stat raised. If the total of the items requested are more thatn 5-7k, it isn't worth doing the quest.

- Shrooms - a Purple Spotted Shroom can either raise 1 hp, 1 str, or heal 3 hp - kinda expensive, especially if you get the heal.

- Potions - certain potions from Kayla's shop can raise stats, among them Essence of Drackonack (1 or 2 str, or nothing), Bomberry Elixir (1 def or damages your pet), and Strength Serum (1-4 str). Downside - EoD and Bomberry have a low success rate and all 3 are pricey. The upside is that, unlike neggs and shrooms, they do not depend on your pet's hunger status to use.

- Neggs - a very expensive way to train - recommended only for high-level pets.

~ LAB RAY: Collect all 9 pieces of the Secret Laboratory Map (cost = 450-500k), go to 'Treasure Maps' in the Puzzles section of the Game page, and you will gain access to the Lab Ray, where you can zap 1 pet once per day. The ray will do 1 of the following: raise/lower 1 stat, change gender, change species (and usually color), or change color.

- For training purposes, you should NEVER use the lab ray as your only means of training. The ray does not raise your stats evenly and over time will leave your pet with stats so unbalanced that it will cost far too much to train to balance them out. Use the ray with your school training to help speed things along - training the other stats to match.
Note: Over an 8 month period of labbing a pet, its hp were raised over 100 pts, str and movement raised about 30 pts, level was raised about 7 pts and defence was lowered 20 points.

~ BATTLE SETS: There are many items you can equip you pet with to battle - and probably just as many theories on which ones to use. That said, you can only equip 8 to fight with. I believe there are 5 essential items that every good battle set should include: a multi-use attack weapon, a freezing item, a 'grenade' weapon, a healing item, and a defense item.

Many people would argue that a shield is optional, but I recommend using one at least until your pet is high enough level to get the burrow and sink abilities and can do enough damage per round to shorten most matches to only a couple rounds. Downsize! is also a great defensive item - it reduces damage by 50% for 1 round - however it is one use so you'll need to decide whether to use a slot on that or another offensive item. Also keep in mind that your opponent will sometimes dictate which weapons you should equip. Some are stronger at certain types of attacks and some defend certain types of attacks well while being very weak against others. If you lose to an opponent, pay attention to what they use and adjust your battle set accordingly.

A grenade weapon - is any high-damage, once-per-battle weapon such as a Honey Potion, Ghostkerbomb, Snowballs, and Muffins. Some of these (snowballs, muffins) disappear permanently after using them, while the others just disappear for the remainder of the battle and are available again the next battle (Gbomb, HPotion). Ideally, these are used when your opponent is frozen, for maximum effect.

For a starter battle set, I recommend the following: Leaf Shield (defence), Snowglobe Staff (freezing), lost desert dagger, Scarab Ring, Slime Potion (Healing), Downsize! (reduces opponents attack 50%), and 2x Sticky Snowballs (cheap 1 use 'grenades'). Total cost: approx. 33k.

The set I listed is a 'generic' set for any pet. Some pet species have some really good, cheap species-only weapons that are used in place of some of the items mentioned.

As you increase your stats and gain neopoints, of course, you will want to upgrade your battle set.
- Healing - see my Scorchstone Tips section below.
- Freezing - The next step up from the Snowglobe Staff are the Black and Rainbow Frost Cannons (over 150k), then its the 100% freeze items like H4000 helmet and Freezing Potion (3.8 mil†).
- Stealing - for around 100k you can get a Green Sticky Hand, which has a chance of stealing an opponents weapon. Comes in handy against many 1P opponents.
- Once per battle Grenades - Honey Potion (600k and up).
- Weapons - too many to list here. Again, your opponent may dictate which weapon would be best to use.

~ 100% FREEZING ITEMS - In my opinion, the first 'expensive' weapon every serious battler should save up for is a 100% freezing item (meaning it freezes your opponent for 1 turn every time it is used), the cheapest of which is the H4000 Helmet (h4k helm) at around 4 million neopoints. Having the ability to be able to hit your opponent with your strongest attack while they cannot defend or counter makes a *HUGE* difference in battling.

FAERIE ABILITIES

Overview - There are a total of 52 faerie abilities you can get for your pet. Of these 52, however, only 9 are of any real use in the battledome: heal, burrow, sink, drain life, fiery gaze, healing vapour, restore, regen, and diamond dust.

To get a faerie ability for your pet you must first raise your pet's level to the required pet level of the ability, then bless your pet with the appropriate bottled faerie. If your pet's level is too low, the faerie will fly away and disappear. You only need one faerie per ability, but the catch is that you have to get all the abilities of the levels below it first. For example, if you want the Earth ability 'Burrow' at level 10, you must first get the Earth abilities Magic Pebbles (lvl 1), Tough Skin (lvl 3), and Magic Berries (lvl 6). You can do this either one of 2 ways: bless your pet as you go (using 1 faerie at a time each time you reach an ability level), or all at once (raise your pet to the required level and bless multiple times - 1 faerie per ability).

Abilities Table - description of the abilities you will need (pet level needed, ability type/#, description)

Burrow - Level 10 - 4th Earth ability - blocks earth, air, fire, water and physical.
Diamond Dust - Level 28 - 8th Air ability - chance of freezing, although a very low chance (less than 10%).
Drain Life - level 21 - 7th Dark ability - Drains 11% of opponents hp (up to a max of 100) and heals your pet with them.
Fiery Gaze - level 6 - 3rd Fire ability - Same as Diamond Dust.
Heal - level 1 - 1st Water ability - Heals 1-50hp. Only useful on low-level pets.
Healing Vapour - level 27 - 8th Water ability - Heals 33% of lost hp (regen and restore have similar effect). Only useful on high-level pets (300†hp).
Sink - level 30 - 8th Dark ability - Defends light, dark, water, fire, and physical.

Raising Ability Level (the level of the abilities themselves, not to be confused with the pet level needed for an ability) - There are currently 3 ways to raise the level of an ability: Landing on the Light Faerie on the Wheels of Excitement and Monotony, and by feeding your pet a Radioactive Negg. NOTE: The ability that's level is raised is random, there is currently no way to raise the level of an ability directly. Also, the level of an ability currently makes no difference in the battledome.

SCORCHSTONE TIPS

A couple notes: I didn't include Earthen, Silver and Gold, because they are not healers. The prices listed are approximate and change constantly - its just to give you a rough idea of the range.

A general comment on scorchstones: The point of having one is to extend the battle by replenishing lost hit points at the maximum value of the scorchstone. In other words, using a 30 hp heal when you have only lost 20 hp is a waste. By the same token, waiting until you're dead to heal won't get you far, either.;) The recommended pet hit point levels I list are suggestions to help you get the most useful healing for your neopoints.

For pets 15 hit points and under - use Slime Potion - heals 10 and only costs 2k. (thanks pikastrife_)

Bronze SS heals: 15 hp cost: 16k recommend pet hit points: 16
Red SS heals: 20 cost: 75k recommended pet hit points: 30
Blue SS heals: 30 cost: 150k recommended pet hit points: 45
Green SS heals: 40 cost: 450k recommended pet hit points: 60
Purple SS heals: 50 cost: 1.5mil recommended pet hit points: NOT RECOMMENDED. Paying 1 mil plus over the cost of a Green SS for only 10 more hp's is a waste of money. Just stick with Green.
Rainbow SS heals: 80 cost: 3mil recommended pet hit points: 100† It's a little pricey, and you should get a solid battle set before upgrading to this.
Glittery SS heals: 100 cost: 6-8 mil (approx) recommended pet hit points: 120† Because of it's rarity (r100), its price is more than double the Rainbow SS. If you already have a good battle set and are working toward a Jade SS this might be worth it, otherwise, the price doesn't justify including it in your battle set. (Even if rs'ed, you're better advised to sell toward upgrading the rest of your set).
Ice SS heals: full* (25% chance) cost: 2mil (3mil in HT) recommended pet hit points: NONE - This is JUNK for 2 mil. 25% chance of heal means you could end up having several battles where it doesn't heal at all. I don't know about you, but when I use a healing item I like to be 100% sure I'm going to be healed.
Jade SS heals: full* cost: 30 mil recommended pet hit points: 175† *Below 175 hps it is not as effective for a 20† mil price tag, and you should first get a top bd set that includes high icon weapons (like a G Sword) and a Thyoras Tear. If you need a full heal for a battle, get an Amulet of Life or a Lucky Robot's Foot. Otherwise stick to the Rainbow SS.
* 'full heal in the case of Ice and Jade SS means they heal the amount of hps you are down at the beginning of the round. Damage taken during the round is subtracted after the heal is applied. Example: You begin a round with 60/200 hp, use the Jade SS, and your opponent attacks for 150 points of damage. The Jade SS will first heal you 140 hp, then the 150 damage will be subtracted, leaving you with 50hp at the end of the round.

*** Sloth TCG Weapon Rankings ***

1) Sleep Ray - 2a/2d † 100% freeze: 1x battle. - The best of the group, its a h4k with attack. Really good if you have a high str boost.

2) Bzzt Blaster - 11 icons (5l/3a/3w) - probably the best of the attack weapon prizes. Very hard to block all (although AAScr and J-Wand reduce this to a 3 icon weapon they are not that common). Light † Air means it cannot be fully blocked by burrow or sink.

3) Fungus Ray - 11 icons (5w/3e/3d) - to quote idb "like a DBD with added earth icons." Nice weapon with better variety than kiln. Earth † Dark means it cannot be fully blocked by burrow or sink.

4) Garoos Elite Blaster - 11 icons (5f/3e/3p) - Another decent combo of icons - weak against burrow, though.

5) Goo Blaster - 11 icons (5w/3e/3p) - the least of the 11 icon prizes - a leaf shield would kill this thing. Prolly better suited for 1p battles.

6) Virtublaster 3000 - 6 icons (3l/3a) - Nice combo of icons, but that's it. Will be way overpriced, imo. Especially condsidering a r99 V-5000 does the same. Zap2k is a better bargain.
