Ro's Story

I was born in a peophin herd that lived in the waters near Maraqua. My mother died a year after I was born and I had never known my father. So the lead stallion, who we called Drakon, looked after me. All I remember of my mother was that she was a deep red like me and her warm voice as she used to comfort me when I didn't get along with the other young peophins. Which became more frequent after her death, I hardly ever played with the other peophins and usually just moped around by myself.

One day I had an argument with Drakon, I can't remember what about but it had made me so mad that I swam away from the herd; the sight of them just got me angrier. I had always only stayed within the sight of the herd when playing, but not today. I swam away from them, anger clouding my sight so I didn't even know where I was swimming. But I didn't care, as long as I was getting away from them. Hours later I realised I was totally lost and it had begun to darken. The seas at night were not a safe place if you were alone. I panicked. Looking around this way and that, hoping I could find some clue as to which way the herd was. All my anger had ebbed away as fear took its place. As I scanned my surroundings I saw a large shape move towards where I was. It was too big to be a peophin and it moved at a very rapid pace. I backed against a large rock, in hopes of not being seen. My heart thudded so loudly I was sure that it would hear me. I wished so much to be anywhere else. I closed my eyes trying to picture the cave and the place my herd resided. Then a wave of nausea hit me. It was as if I had just swum 20 leagues at torpedo speed, when I opened my eyes again the scene of home was right in front of me. I was back home.

My relief was soon subsided as I realised something was very wrong. No one was to be seen. The place I had once loved so much was eerily silent. At first I thought they had all gone in search of me but as I swam around the place I saw traces of blood. It was my only clue as to what had happened. Despite my fear before of wandering lost in the waters alone, I decided to go after them. The only thing that stopped me was that I didn't know which way they went. I tried to close my eyes and imagine seeing Drakon and the rest of my herd, wishing to see them again. Nothing happened. I opened my eyes hopeful, but already knowing that I was where I had been when I had closed my eyes. I sighed. It was too dark to see much any more and so I gave up and swam back to the cave, huddling in my own little corner. The cave seemed so big and empty without the others.

When I woke I almost thought it was a dream. That nothing bad had happened and the herd was still here. But as quickly as that thought came it disappeared. I slowly swam out and the scene was as desolate as it was in the twilight. I swam around the outer edges of our home hoping for any signs of a trail. I was lucky enough to spot a faint trail of blood on the stone and coral. I slowly followed it, hoping that they were all right. Hoping that most of them had fled home from whatever it was and were hiding in a sanctuary.

It was that hope that kept me swimming. And I slowly found myself in a clearing. In the middle of that clearing was a huge hill and there was a cave in its side. The only thing was that the entrance to the cave was huge; it was 10 times taller than me and 5 times wider. As I cautiously swam closer my eyes beheld two large piles of bones on either side of the entrance. I stopped in my tracks. This isn't right. As I peered closer to the bones my stomach lurched, as I recognise the remains of peophins… there was even a peophin skull there. A loud snuffling noise from within the darkness of that cave aroused me from my trance of shock. I quickly swam away from that place. I don't know how long I had swam for but I didn't head home. I slept when nightfall came and ate when I was hungry. I kept on swimming. I didn't know where I was going and I only awoke from my numbness of mind when I came upon Mystery Island.

I watched as pets trotted happily alongside their humans upon the beach. Some playing in the sand, others just walking by, some taking swims. I was far out where anybody would have to squint before seeing a speck in the sea that was me. I swam on, circling the island. It wasn't long until I found a perfect place to stay the night. It was a small arena like place, with lots of different kelps, ferns and sea grasses growing within it. There was also a small cave to the side, which at least three peophins can fit in comfortably. The small arena almost seemed like a courtyard for it. It was in that place I lived contently for a few weeks, before coming upon Canine. She was another human that had come to Mystery Island for a holiday. She sat on a rock that jutted out from the island into the waters. That rock was far away, on the less populated side of the beach where the sand was not as smooth and many large rocks randomly protruded through the sand. She was alone sitting there, her face showed that her mind was far away. She was gazing up at the clouds and didn't notice as I silently swam over. Although I was surprised at myself, I kind of wasn't at the same time, I longed for company and this human seemed to be in want of it. It didn't take her long to realise I was there and we started talking.

It was like that for the rest of the week. I'd wait for her at the rock and everyday she'd turn up and we'd talk. One day she took one of her gelerts with her. I was shy at first but Firebolt wasn't an unkind gelert and we got along well. Canine offered her home to me and I became one of her first neopets.

I have stayed with the family for many years now. Seen many pets come and go, including the farewell of Firebolt and the arrival of Firebolt jr. Although we keep having foster pets come in and go out our family has become more stable now, and I have a few siblings of my own kind.
