Introduction

Ow! You stumble roughly to your feet and try to look at your surroundings, but the hot Tyrannian sun blinds you. Great, you think as your eyes finally adjust. Just what I get for spinning the Wheel of Monotony!

Around you, the horizon is dotted with volcanoes and geysers. You look down to see your brand new sneakers covered in sulfuric goop.
Uck! Stepping over to the nearest clump of withered, dehydrated grass, you rub the gunk off yourself, and look about for a trail or any sign of Neopian life that might lead you to civilization. While surveying, you have the annoying feeling of being watched. You shake it off and, using your uncanny ability for navigation, decide to head in a random direction.

A half an hour later, the watched feeling persists, which really annoys you because you're already tired, thirsty, and have several burns from unexpected hot water spouts. You continue on, but something catches your eye. You turn left and walk about a hundred feet before stopping at a great ditch in the ground. The scar runs a good distance and looks like it might have been left by a falling object, like a meteorite.

Turning around, you spot a retreating figure.
Another person! Hey! you call. Starting abruptly at the noise, the figure darts across the steam-filled landscape with amazing speed and slides down a steep embankment. 'Hey! Wait!' you shout, trying to pursue on your weary legs. Stumbling along, you reach the embankment and, seeing no other alternative, you turn and tumble all the way down the slope and finally land face first at the bottom. Getting up quickly, you look around to see where the figure has gone, but you see no one for miles in any direction.

*Blast it!* you swear silently to yourself, feeling that your last hope for returning home was just lost amid the acrid fumes of the volcano plains. Just as you're about to start crying for mommy, however, a cool voice sounds from very close behind you.

It is not often, that I receive visitors here.

My Story

I.

The heavens shined brightly down on him. Each star a pinpoint of light, like so many glittering holes punched through an inky black canvas. He looked northward for a familiar friend and sighed as he spotted the firey point.

Polaris," he spoke softly to the star. "How beautifully you shine tonight."

He shifted uncomfortably on the rocky bluff and turned his head in order to get a better view of the Neopian planet.

What a wonderous-looking place. One day I'll leave this moon and visit it, if only-

Rita! Are you stargazing again?" shouted Thoragold from the bottom of the quary cliff. "Get your head out of the atmosphere and get back to work!"

Discovered, yet again. Ritawang thought as he stood and brushed dirt from the legs and back of his jumpsuit. He scowled treacherously down at his bucket and pick-axe, envying the blasters that the older employees at the mining company were issued. Morosely gathering his equipment, he made a labourous decent down the rockface to the quary floor.

As he reached the bottom, Thoragold came towards him. "If you don't stop taking these little breaks," he said concernedly, "I'll have to report you to the foreman. And I'd hate to have to do that, Rita."

I know, big brother. I know." Ritawang shuffled his two-toed feet uneasily in the gravel and kept his eyes glued to the ground. He did regret these ventures, but he would be lying to say he he didn't enjoy them.

Thoragold looked lovingly down on his younger sibling. He was his only brother, and, since their father had died many years earlier, Thor had had to take responsibility of the household, being the oldest child and son. He remembered his first months working in the mines: the exhausting hours spent hammering deep into the crator walls, the constant danger of rock slides, the many scuffles with fellow miners brought on by tiredness and fustration, and the final reward of a paycheck used to by food for the table and necessities for the family. Over the years, he had risen up to assistant foreman and a much respected member of the community. Now, looking down at his baby brother, he felt ashamed to have forgotten how hard it must be for him, just starting in unfamilier surroundings after so many years of carefree childhood.

You know what," Thor said gently, lifting Ritawangs chin so as to remove his eyes from the ground. "I think we have enough Grundo's here to spare one. Why don't you run home and help Mum with supper?"

A smile slowly brightened Ritas face. "Really?"

Yes. Really." Thor said, catching his brothers smile. "And tell her that I'll be home in a few hours, and that a Kreluberry Pie would hit the spot after such a long day at work." He winked racously.

This is great! Thanks Thor!" Rita called over his shoulder as he dashed down the trail towards the quarry gate, his bucket and axe swinging wildly as he ran, causing others to jump off the path to avoid being impaled.

Thoragold chuckled to himself as he watched Rita gallop around the bluff, and out of sight.

A group of workers passed close by and one of them shouted to him. "Hey! Thor! Our shift's ended. Do you want to join us at the Cafe for a slush?"

Nah," Thoragold said, "One of the new workers had to go home early, so I'm going to stay late to finish for him."

Suit yourself!" And they continued on, joking and conjoling each other jovilly.

Sighing deeply, Thor pulled his blaster from the holster at his waist and headed to the worksite to finish his brother's shift.
