Olivia interrupts the page to say: This page is under construction, but enjoy what is already here. =) ![]() I didn't expect it to take this long, you think to yourself. You were taking a hike along a trail in the woods, and nighttime is folding in on you at an incredible rate. I hope I can make it out of here before sundown. You walk into a clearing and hear a shuffling sound from beneath a bush. You stop in your tracks as a creature slowly emerges. After a moment, you can see that it is a Uni, but just because some are known to be gentle doesn't mean this one is. Though she appears to be looking straight at you she asks, "Is someone there?" You take a moment to look at her, noting her pale pink color, dark charcoal mane and tail, scarlet hooves and horn, and the bony, bat-like wings with red skin stretched between them. You look at her eyes and figure out why she didn't directly address you: she is blind. Her eyes appear to be pupil-less, and are a very pale lavender color. After a moment's contemplation, you respond. "Yes, I am here." She sighs in relief, apparently because she was afraid it might be someone dangerous, and someone who may hurt her wouldn't likely announce their presence. "I am Rishima," she says slowly, and waits for you to say your name. She seems trustworthy, you think. "I'm guest." The sun suddenly goes down, almost like someone blew out a candle. "Do you know how to get out of this forest?" you ask cautiously, unsure of whether or not she can help since she is blind. She lifts her head up to the sky and blinks a few times. "I can't help you for a couple more minutes." You look at her curiously, wondering what she could possibly mean by that. You both stand in silence, and you follow her eyes up towards the sky, wondering what she is waiting for. Slowly, you see moonlight beginning to glow, and Rishima's mouth forms a smile. You look at her eyes and are astounded as the begin to change. Slowly, as slow as the moon rises, her eyes begin to get clearer, and her pupils become visible. After minutes of watching in fascination, they finally stop changing when the reach a dark violet color. After a few moments you snap yourself out of your state of shock and ask, "What just happened?" She laughs and smiles. "Well, for now I can see. I'll take you from the forest now. While we travel would you like to hear the explanation for what happened to my eyes?" You nod and you both begin walking through the woods. |

When I was born, my life was good. I had an older brother, and two loving parents. At least, they were loving towards us. Truthfully, they were horrible. They were the leaders of a herd that was always unsatisfied with the amount of land they had; the fact that they had over five times more than other herds was unimportant. They cared nothing of those they hurt and the lives they ruined. One night, they took it too far. A shadowy green lupe stood guarding the woods that my parents had recently decided they wanted. He spoke in a low growl as they approached, "I know who you are and what you have done. Leave here now, and perhaps you will be spared." They did nothing but laugh and run past him, and he melted into the ground. He came up in front of them and they halted. He growled, and the rest of the herd was cut off from them. "You will pay," he snapped, and my brother and I were pulled from outside the forest into the clearing they were in. Our parents tried to leap forward to protect us, but their feet were being held to the ground by the soil. He grabbed both of us by our horns and I felt a strange sensation roll through my body, both hot and cold. They watched in horror as my eyes changed from their deep, shining violet to a dull lavender, with pupils barely visible, and even worse, my brother fell dead. Luckily, I hadn't seen it, since I was now blind. He released us all and vanished into dust. I stumbled across the ground towards where I had last seen my parents, crying, though I hadn't even yet known that I no longer had a brother. The only thing I really remember is my mother helping me out of the woods, and that everything was dark. That night there had been a new moon, though I had not yet known that it was important at all. The next night, I had a nightmare and woke up in the dark, but it was not as dark as it should have been. I could faintly see the outlines of trees and the sleeping herd, and I couldn't remember if I had actually been blind or not, so I decided to not wake anyone and just go back to sleep. In the morning, I could feel the sunlight, but I could see nothing, and assumed that it had been yet another dream. For many nights I was asleep before the sun had set and awoke after it had again risen, and thus knew nothing of the fact that my blindness was not entire. It was a struggle adjusting to not being able to see, but after a while I adapted. I knew I was blind and didn't expect that to change, but one night, it did. It was a full moon and the night sky was full of stars. I thought I was dreaming, but I knew I wasn't. I could see. I woke no one, and stood up, quietly walking around. I didn't understand how it happened, but it wasn't important at the moment. Then I heard some whispering in a grove of trees, and silently sneaked over to listen. They were the familiar voices of the leaders of the herd, including my parents. Something inside me told me to stay hidden. I had known that they were powerful and that they had taken over many lands, but until then I had never noticed the error of their ways. The way the were discussing it, I felt I no longer belonged with them, and that night I spread my wings and left the herd forever. When I awoke the next morning I was very frightened. From the feel of the land and the smell of the air, I knew I had really left the herd the night before, but once more, I could not see. I remembered landing in the night and sleeping beneath a bush incase I was in unfriendly territory, and for the rest of the day I lay there trying to figure out what to do. In the shde of the shrub, I had no idea what time it was until night fell, and the moon rose. The beams of light found their way through the leaves, and suddenly, I could see. I stood up and looked around, finally understanding what was going on. I could see under moonlight. I couldn't help but smile, and I opened my wings once again and took to the skies, searching for food and water while it could still be found. As time passed, I realized that as the phases of the moon changed, my degree of sight did as well, meaning the more moonlight, the more I can see. I have not yet met many others on my travels, but I do not think of my blindness as a curse, as it was intended. |
