There are many folktales and myths that explain the existence of the Maine Coon. You can look them up in Google because I'm too lazy to write them. But anyways, many people agree that the Maine Coon was created though short-haired domestic cats and long-haired breeds brought overseas by English seafarers. The Maine Coon looks like a Norwegian Forest Cat. Some believe that the Maine Coon is related to it.

Maine Coon are of the largest of the domestic cat. Male cats can weigh up to 15 and 25 pounds, while females may weigh up to 10 and 15 pounds. These cats are between 10 and 16 in tall and their length ranges to 40 in with its tail. The notable feature of the Maine Coon is its dense fur and its furry tail. The body is muscular and its chest is broad. Maine Coon can come in many colors such as brown tabby, chocolate, and lavender. This cat has pointed furry ears too. It is said that these cats have a trait for polydactylism (more than one toes) in England.

These guys are ready for the winter. Because of their thick fur, these cats can survive the harsh winter. Their fur is water-resistant and their tail is useful for not sinking in the snow. The Maine Coon also wraps it tail around itself to warm itself. Their paws are like snowshoes so they could walk on snow. The extra furs on the paws allow additional warmth when walking on snow.

Maine Coons are "friendly giant". They are very intelligent and are easy to train. They are loyal to family members and shy around strangers. They are not clingy nor a lap cat. These cats are playful and love water.

Egyptian Mau

Egyptian Mau is one of the ancient breed. Unlike many cats, Egyptian Mau is a natural breed. It is believed that they have originated from the African Wild cats and then came to Egypt. The Mau have been valued as it a hunter and as worshipped. Around the 1940s, the Mau have almost become extinct due to WWII. However, thanks to Russian Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy who brought the cat back to its normal population. When she was in Italy, she rescued the cat and decided to breed them.

So how do these cute munchkins look like? Well, we all know how they look like according to pictures. But since I like to write boring stuff, I'll give you some awesome descriptions. Who can't resist the slender and muscular cat who medium long sized? Well, you shouldn't try that at home though. They have almond shaped eyed that is shaded with light green. The coat of the Mau is normally a silver, bronze or even black with spots on it. It is said that a shaved Mau may still have its spots.

Want to know a cool fact? For my lack of paraphrasing skills, here's what it says in Wikipedia: "The Egyptian Mau is the fastest of the domestic cats, with its longer hind legs, and unique flap of skin extending from the flank to the back knee, provides for greater agility and length of stride. Maus have been clocked running over 30 mph (48 km/h)." And that is a fast cat.

As we all love to hear, the Maus are very intelligent and is likely to form a close bond with its humans. Maus are lap cats, but because of their alertness, they might have a short attention span of sitting on your lap. Because of the awesome Maus' agility, speed, and alertness in the ears, Maus rarely get hit by a car. Maus will often spend their time in farms, hunting mice. So if you have loads of mice in your home, you know the best cat to call. Egyptian Mau is not a good companion if you're a type of owner who usually bring loads of cats or humans at home. In addition, the Maus are very musical. Instead of listening to your I-Pod (just joking), you could hear the chirp and the chortle of the Maus. They have unusual meows.

Domestic Shorthair

Domestic Shorthair is a fancy term to phrase any non pedigree cats. But really, it means plain shorthair cats. Today, this month, we shall celebrate the non fancy cats and our own cats. I assume that most people did not purchased their cats in breeding areas.

Domestic Shorthair may have pure color (like solid gray or solid black), calico, tuxedo (black and white cats) or tabby colors like orange, brown, etc. It all depends on the ancestry of the cat. A Domestic Shorthair may resemble an apperance of a Siamese or a Russian Blue (like how I thought my gray cat was a Russian Blue), but in reality, they are random-bred domestics. Domestic Shorthair can have different facial structure and body size. Majority of the time, the males tend to be bigger than the female. They usually weight around 11 to 22 pounds. But all Domestic Shorthair have one thing in common which is short, sleek coat.

Domestic Shorthair is the result of many generations of mixed breed with different types of cats. Since it's very hard to identified all the breeds, we just called them "Domestic Shorthair."

It's pretty hard to identified their personality because they all have different ones. Some cats have be quiet and affectionate, while some may be gentle and talkative.

Bengal

The Bengal cat was supposed to be the Cat of the Month for winter, but I decided not to. But anyways, the Bengals are awesome.

The Bengal is a mixed between a domestic cat and an Asian leopard cat, which was a wild cat. The Bengal was the first recognized breed in 1963 when breeder Jean Mill of Covina, California, bought a female leopard cat from a pet store. At that time, leopard cats could be purchased in the United States, although today it is illegal to sell them. The reason why she bred them was, "I deliberately crossed leopard cats with domestic cats for several important reasons. At that time, wild cats were being exploited for the fur market. Nursing female leopard cats defending their nests were shot for their pelts, and the cubs were shipped off to pet stores worldwide. Unsuspecting cat lovers bought them, unaware of the danger, their unpleasant elimination habits and the unsuitability of keeping wild cats as pets. Most of the wild kittens from this era ended up in zoos or escaped onto city streets. I hoped that by putting a leopard coat on a domestic cat, the pet trade could be safely satisfied. If fashionable women could be dissuaded from wearing furs that look like friends' pets, the diminished demand would result in less poaching of wild species."

Wow, that was a long history. So how does a Bengal look like? The Bengal has large brown spots and a light/white belly, and a body structure similar to the Asian Leopard Cat. The Bengal is very muscular and lean.

Bengal are usually friendly, docile, and playful.

British Short Hair

No cats can beat the British Short Hair for being the top cat of WINTER! You know why British Short Hair gets the fame? Well first, they look like a cat version of Santa Claus. 2nd, they have chubby cheeks *squeeze their cheeks*. And 3rd, I found many good Christmas picture of British Short Hair in Google.

You are probably thinking British Shorthair are native from Great Britain. If you're thinking that, you're wrong! Hahahaha! That must be awful. But if you were not thinking of that, then guess what? British Shorthair was brought by the Romans into Great Britain. From time on, British Shorthair was interbred with the Persians. This must explained the unique description of British Shorthair's puffy cheeks. I really want to squeeze their cheeks.

How do British Shorthair look like? Well.. let's see.. According to the Cat Fanciers Association, "they are large and muscular. They also have full broad chest, short strong legs, rounded paws and a tail that is thick at the base and tapers slightly to a rounded tip show off a 'football player' physique". Sounds amazing doesn't it? Majority of British Shorthair in United States are gray/blue. However, British Shorthair can come in different ranged in color like black, blue, white, red, cream, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, and other colors you could think of. Too bad they don't come in purple or green. Oh yeah, I'm forgetting something. British Shorthair usually have big copper or gold eyes.

So, what's the personality of a British Shorthair? Well, they are typically peaceful and maybe shy. They are affectionate cat and they'll love to follow you around the room. They also easily get along with other pets and children.

Basically, if I have the chance to have a British Shorthair, I'll have one. They sound sweet.

American Shorthair

The most popular cats that most cat owners have, the American Short Hair. These cats are wonderful. They are lean, robust, and good looking. These cats know they are and they're quite proud of that!

American Short Hair are the perfect cat for November, especially when Kat's cat is the Cat Model for November. Anyways, getting back on topic, these cats come in verity of colors.

I'm sorry cat luvs, but American Short Hair does have a long history of its origin. These cats originally came from England and were shipped in the Mayflower to hunt rats. These cats became to be known as "working cat". They were awesome hunters. These cats were prized so much then one brown tabby cat was sold for $2,500 dollars in 1896. That's must be VERY expensive in today's currency.

These cats were originally called "Domestic Shorthair", but it was renamed as "American Shorthair" in 1966. So what's wrong with calling the cat "Domestic Shorthair", eh? Americans decided to change the name to represent its "All American" character and to differentiate it from any other shorthaired breed.

American Shorthair are not snobby cats. On the contray, they are "normal" cat. They are not too active nor are they too lazy. They are not too vocal, but they will chirp or "silent meow". These cats will love to sleep with you on the bed or on the couch.

American Shorthair do fairly fine with dogs or family member companion, but it's not a guarantee. These are generalizations about these cats, so not all of these info may apply to every other Amercian Shorthair.

What is the difference between American Shorthair and Domestic Shorthair? Domestic Shorthair is a non-pedigreed cat might look like a Siamese, Persian, Maine Coon, or American Shorthair in our case. Or another definition is a cat that does not belong to a recognized cat breed. I hhave a Domesticated Shorthair Gray that looks like a Russian Blue. The best way to determine if your cat is a American Shorthair, if you bought your cat from a breeder's place.

Bombay

Sometimes the purrfect cat for October is the Bombay cat. They are not just any ordinary cats, they are BOMBAYS. Well, fine.. They're cats though, but they're much better. You know why? Cause they're black and they look like black panthers.

I mean how cool is that? A black cat who is small and muscular. Well, take it from me, I'm small, lean, and somewhat slight built. Okay, so I didn't come here to inform you about my body shape, but getting back on topic... Bombays are just great cats. I have not even the slightest clue how many times I said that.

The Bombay was first bred in 1958 as a result of a cross between a Black American Shorthair with a Burmese to have a cat that resembled a wild panther. It's something that you shouldn't try at home.

Bombay have black short coat, no doubt. These cats require less grooming. Bombays have small rounded head. Their ears are medium-sized and their ears are slightly rounded at the tip. They have big rounded orange eyes like pumpkins. Oh shucks, what a bad simile. Buy anyways, their eyes ranges from copper to gold. Impressive colors? I wish my eyes were gold and they could glow in the dark. I'll probably freak everyone out by now. Getting back on track, they are small and muscular cats like I said earlier. But don't be fooled by this kitty's stature. If you ever had a chance to have a Bombay, pick one up (gently) and you'll be surprised by how much this cat weighs.

Bombays are a bit fickle. They love ATTENTION and FOOD. They are highly intelligent and they are affectionate. They will often accept other cats and dogs in the household. They love to play fetch and do tricks. No wonder Bombays often appear in shows.

Bombay cats love heat (human body heat, I don't know what you were thinking), so don't be alarmed when you are going to sleep that this cat will appear at your side!

Savannah

Cat Fancy presents the Savannah Cat as the Cat of the Month. Why Savannahs? Well first, majority of the people voted for it. And second, Savannah are one of the largest domesticated cat breed. Why is Savannah a big domesticated cat? This is because it was crossed between a Serval and a domesticated cat.

Chart Reference details made up by Ribbit. it may not be accurate.

Here's a quick history: The Savannah first bred by Judee Frank on April 7, 1986. Patrick Kelley purchased the Savannah and then promoted the Savannah to become a new breed.

Savannah are tall, slender, and elegant. Their weight may range from 12 to 35 pounds, depending on the generation. The overall look of a Savannah is usually a "wild" look. In general, they have a tan or brownish coat with black spots. The back of their ears are ocelli. The color of the eyes usually ranges from green, brown, or gold. They have black marks that run from the corner of their eyes down the sides of the nose to the whisker like a cheetah. These markings near the eyes reduce the glare from sunlight

The F1 are usually have the most Serval's traits. That's why they cost a lot. Also, some Savannah are illegal in some states like New York. In Australia, Savannah are illegal pets. And getting back to the generation, there are about 3 generations, which are:

Savannah Males Female Serval %
F1 $7,500-$22,000 $6000-$22,000 53%
F2 $4,500-$16,000 $4,500-$14,000 29%
F3 $3,000-$6,000 $3,500-$5,500 16%

So how does the Savannah act? Well, they're outgoing, intelligent, and loving. These qualities are everything that every owner wants. I just wish my cat was a bit affecionate. These cats love walking on leashes and they love to fetch like a dog. These cats get along with dogs and children. As well as that, they LOVE water. So you probably won't have a hard time giving them a bath. The personality of Savannah varies among generation. Basically, the F1 posses the more wild trait.

F1: Because they are highly active, owners are requiredd to play with them. Some F1 will knock down vases, pots, and cups. So you should keep these items hidden. F1 are known to jump very high. Maybe as tall as me. Because F1 love water, you probably won't be surprised to find them drinking from the toilet seat or in your bath tubs. Normall, F1 creates strong bonds with close family members. Some F1 may be very agreesive and may growl/hiss a lot. Some will growl/hiss when he/she is excited, upset, or agitated. F1 are NOT lap cats, but they do like to be petted.

F2 usually have similar personality to F1. However. F2 are more social and enjoy the company of visitors. They have prolific amount of energy and they love to play. They are not lap cats, but they love to be petted.

F3 are more social and outgoing. They enjoy the company of visitors and affection. They have prolific amount of energy and they love to play. They are lap cats and love to be held.

Savannah should be fed high quality food with no by-products or grains. It depends on which generation of Savannah you are feeding. F1 generation usually required to feed raw meat or exotic diet. Savannah could be given the same vaccine as a household cats. In the earlier generation, Savannah may need to be fed with supplements.

Russian Blue

The first Cat of the Month is brought to you by the *DUN DUN DUN* Russian Blue! *huge drum roll* So why are Russian Blue the first lucky cat? Well... first I love gray cats. And second Russian Blue are the best cat in the world. THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT.

Here's a short history about the Russian Blue. Let's just say that the Russian Blue all began in Archangel Isles, Russia. And then on 1875, the Russian Blue was shipped to England and was brought to court. And then... the reign of Russian Blue started.

Now TIME to prepare for a LONG description of the Russian Blue. So... here's a story. I have always though my gray cat, Argentum, was a Russian Blue. Well, I was disappointed when I found out that she was a Domesticated Shorthair cat. Basically, she was just a plain cat. But don't worry, I love her the way she is. Anyways, Russian Blue are elegant. It is rare that they'll end up being obese. They obviously have bluish-gray fur. Here's a side note: Just because your cat is gray, it does not mean your cat is a Russian Blue. Do not make that mistake! I'm getting so off-topic. As I was saying about the Russian Blue, they have double coated fur. This means that their fur should be smooth, short, and dense with a tiny of silver at the tip. Okay, that does not make sure. But, these silver tips give the Russian Blue a "lustrous appearance". Sounds cool, eh? The body of a Russian Blue should be lean, muscular, and finely boned like a role model.

Getting to the personality of a Russian Blue. Well, they are HIGHLY intelligent. Probably very precocious for a cat. Anyways, these cats are usually attached to one or two family members in a house, so it's not a good idea to have a lot of people living or a lot of cats. Russian Blues are shy towards strangers. However, they are not aggressive nor capricious. In general, they make wonderful pet.
