Tainted Angel

Deep in my heart lies a voice I can't silence. It is the voice of my past that hold secrets to how we can save mankind as I was supposedly destined to do. I do not feel like the prodigy that the world proclaims I am. I do not feel I am the savior that people drop to their knees and pray will come save them. For humanity is all but gone from this earth, scrapped off the face of the earth as they clung to existence and the dark settled in. In a frenzied battle between good and evil the world didn't get it's storybook ending

Evil won. Vampires won.

Do I have the power to save the last small band of humans? They are a dead race now, there is no bouncing back for them. Yet I can still hear they're silent prays for the beast that now wields the hand of God.

I don't have the heart to tell them that he has abandoned them. They're very existence depends on the empty thought that he still watches over them, and that they can be saved by his love. Not anymore. They're fate is in my hands now. The last Angel, a reject tossed out of heaven to rot in the mortal world. The key to salvation for the world, but also the key to it's destruction.

The end is closing in now. How will it all come to rest?

At first he thought it was a trap.

The cries were so soft he was certain they were only meant for his ears. No human would have ever been able to hear her, tucked away behind a stack of year old decomposing newspapers. Keen nose was swaying through the air, picking up every scent within miles of where he stood. Ears pivoted back and forth at every sound. His eyesight wasn't the greatest, but nothing moved within their vision.

Large paws crept towards her, her head tucked between her knees like an obedient pup, making approaching her subconsciously easier on the wolf hybrid. He had no idea where she had come from, or why she was on this side of the canal. Or even how for that reason, the bridge had washed out years ago and there was no chance of rebuilding it. He lowered his head to bump her with his nose.

She screamed and started, pressing herself into the wall as if she was a part of it. Her eyes were wide with horror, but only for a split second. Quickly wonder and curiosity replaced fear but her heart continued to race with no sign of stopping. The great wolf looked down on her with blank eyes and his head tilted to the side, hair hanging down in front of his face. Ivory fur was stained with dirt and blood, his teeth yellow and his breath rank. He was the size of a draft horse and built like one, with wings curled at his side the length of his body and with a wingspan of a bus. Why the fear hadn't lasted longer he had no idea.

Who are you?" she asked, her voice the softest thing he had heard in decades.

He blinked, unsure how to respond. Her language he understood but he could never form the words he wanted. He opened his mouth to attempt when she started to cough, covering her mouth with a little hand as her eyes began to water. She coughed for a few minutes as the wolf sat down, just watching her.

Do you have a name?" she asked, her voice now hoarse and rough.

He flattened his ears, not knowing what she meant. A name? "My name is Claire." She said. "I don't have a last name, I'm a orphan." More words the wolf didn't understand. All he got from that sentence was that her name was Claire. That was a pretty sounding word. Claire.

She forced herself up, using the wall as balance. The wolf could not tear his eyes away from her. She was so frail and beautiful. Her voice, her name, her words, her form. He had never seen a human look like her. They were tall beasts with loud voices and a harsh vocabulary. She was the opposite of all of that. Had humans evolved and she was what they would all look like now?

You don't seem like a mean dog." She said and held out her hand, nowhere near him. He stretched out and sniffed her, shuffling closer to shove his nose into her hair, breathing in deeply and sniffing all over her face. She giggled, a high squeal that made his ears shoot forward and recoil.

Oh you're not mean at all!" she said. "You're such a big dog though; I wonder where you came from. Maybe fairies had something to do with you."

She was lifting his wing, looking at the structure of the flight feathers and stepping on her tip toes to scratch where his wing met his body. He pulled his mouth into a smile and purred, eyes closed as his foot began to reach up to the same spot and scratch as well. Not paying attention he knocked her over, jumping up as she landed on the ground laughing.

Oh you great lug!" she yelled, laughing and rolling in the dirty alley.

He smiled, glad she wasn't hurt. He lowered her head for her to grab onto as he hoisted her back to her feet.

Do you have a home Mr. Dog?" His tilted head was translated into a no in her mind. "Well we will need to find you one. It's getting dark."

Dark. This was a word he knew. Looking up he saw she was right, there was about an hour left of daylight before dusk was upon them. He bumped his head into her back, pushing her out of the alley. She protested and turned around, trying to figure out what he was doing. He snarled, fur spiked in dominance as he tried to get her to listen. She stood there as mystified as he was when she tried to speak to him in her language. With a sigh he lowered his neck, pushing up against her and purring.

A ride? Are-are you sure? Oh yes please!" she squealed and climbed onto his back, sitting between his wings and gripping his fur in her tiny hands.
