Welcome to Cross Painted Pets! Ever since the introduction of customisation, a whole new world pf possibilities has opened up. This is a guide which will endeavor to show you what different combinations of colours and paint brush clothes actually look like in order to assist you with your own painting choices.

What are Cross Painted Pets?

Cross Painted pets, also commonly known as Double Painted Pets or Twice Painted Pets are pets that have been painted with at least two different paint brushes and still retain the clothing of one of the colours.

How do you get a cross painted pet you ask?

1. So you want a cross painted pet? Well you've come to the right place! The first thing you should do is decide what paint brushes you actually want to combine, and this guide is here to help you! Browse around, or take a peek at pet colours and their clothes here.
Choose what 'clothes' brush you want and what final base colour you want your pet to be. Also, you don't have to stop at cross painting your pet once! You may wish you obtain a number of sets of paint brush clothes before painting your pet a final colour.

3. Now you are ready to paint your pet with the final colour you want it to be, the colour that will be wearing the clothes from the previous painting! Don't worry about removing the clothes or anything, they won't disappear on you :)
Choose carefully what you want the final colour to be, but it can be absolutely anything! (Except maraquan, mutant, baby, fruit/veg) Even a colour that might give you more clothes works. When you finally paint your pet, they will then be able to wear the clothes from its first coat of paint! Taada, you are now the proud owner of a cross painted pet! Congratulations :)
2. The second step is to paint your pet at the rainbow pool in the main shops with a colour that will give it clothes. Don't paint the final base colour first! That would be a big mistake and a waste of money.
Once painted, if you visit the customisation application, you will be able to see your brand new paint brush clothes that you have gained through painting your pet! And the best thing is, that they're yours to keep forever! Even if your pet changes species, the clothes will stay in your closet waiting to be worn again.

Be wary when buying paint brushes! Make sure you don't buy the plushie version of the real paint brush as it cannot be used to paint your pet.

Hidden Tower
The hidden tower is located in a secret spot in Faerieland and sells a variety of expensive artifacts, weapons and the baby, darigan or royal paint brushes. All the items are fixed in price.
The shop is always stocked, although it does close for one hour each day. The hidden tower can only be accessed if your account is four months or older.

Fruit Machine
The fruit machine is a located in the city of Sahkmet in the Lost Desert and is a daily game that gives you a chance to win a prize. The prizes vary from food to petpets to paint brushes.
If you do happen to win the penultimate prize, you will win 15,000 neopoints, a random battle muffin and a random paint brush. The biggest prize also gives a random paint brush in addition to a 3 random faeries, a random amount of nps and a stat increase in your pet's strength and level.

Keyquest
Keyquest is a multiplayer board game which allows you to win keys, that may then be redeemed for random prizes.
If you win a gold key, you have a chance to win a biscuit, camouflage, cloud, ghost, glowing, snow, speckled, starry, striped or tyrannian paint brush.

Jacko the Phantom Painter may appear to you in a rare random event and give you a random paint brush.

Frequently Asked Questions!

Will my clothes disappear if my pet changes species?
Once you have recieved a set of Paint Brush clothes, they are yours forever to keep! This includes clothes gained through the lab ray and morphing potions.
Even if your pet changes species, the clothes will stay in your closet until you can use them again!

If I have two pets of the same species, can I put say my desert kougra's clothes on my royal kougra?
If you have more than one pet of the same species, they can swap and mix n match clothes to your heart's content! But there are no doubles of the same item unless you paint a second pet the same colour.

Could I combine pieces from the outfits of two different paint brushes? like, say, the vest and pants from the royal boy draik with the jewelry from the desert draik?
Yup! This is entirely possible as long as the zones of the different clothes don't clash! This is what is termed as triple or even quadruple painting a pet - that is a pet has clothes from more than one paint brush. You can come up with some pretty nifty combos this way :)

Could I put, say my desert scorchio's clothes on a lupe?
Paint brush clothes are species specific- If you have a Desert Scorchio, only other scorchios will be able to wear those clothes.

Why can't my unconverted grey pteri wear clothes?! What happens if I repaint it?
Unconverted pets cannot wear clothes other than backgrounds or trinkets.
If you repainted an unconverted pet, they will turn into a new look pet.

I tried putting clothes on my pet, but it doesn't work! Why can't my pet wear clothes?!
If your pet is unconverted, maraquan, mutant, baby or a fruit/vegetable pet, then unfortunately it cannot wear clothes other than backgrounds or trinkets, with the notable exception of a maraquan mynci.
However, TNT have stated in an editorial that they plan on making clothes specifically for these colours, so rejoice! Your pets time will come :3

Can I paint a pet royal (pirate, island...) and sell the clothes or just buy them from someone else instead of painting?
Nope, unfortunately clothes that come from paint brushes cannot be sold, traded or put in your gallery. They have to remain in your closet :/

Can I paint a pet baby, then rainbow, and have a rainbow baby?
Nope! Any paint job completely cancels out a previous paint job. Cross painting refers only to the clothes that are obtained from a previous paint job. No physical qualities from the pet's last paint job will remain, just the clothes!

Are wings wearable items? If I had a faerie lupe and painted it something else, would I still be able to put the wings on?
Yes and no! The wings that are part of a neopet like in faerie and darigan pets, are a natural extension of their body and so cannot be carried through to a second paint job :(
However, in some paint brushes, the wings are part of a costume and yes, will stay on after a second paint job! The only pet that has this is christmas zafara.

Royal Dilemas!

There has been some confusion regarding Royal pets and their ability to be able to wear the other genders clothes. Some people have said that a royal boy can't wear a royal girls clothes. Well I'm sure everyone will be happy to know that in fact, a royal pet can wear whatever it wants, including the opposite genders clothes if they really wish to! But of course, your pet may feel a little silly if you do force them to do so =D

Royals and the lab ray

If I lab zap a Royal Boy, and it changes gender, will I get Royal Girl clothes?
Someone has confirmed, that yes, if you have say, a royal boy eyrie (blue fur), and you zap it and it changes gender, then you will have a royal girl, with the new set of clothes (purple fur). You will get to keep BOTH sets of clothes.

And no, you don't need to remove your pets current clothes before zapping, they won't disappear on you. But if it makes you feel better, go ahead :D

I received a very interesting mail from someone, regarding clothes and the lab ray. It was as follows:

I recently got a Quiguki boy quiggle from the pound (hence had no clothes), and zapped him. He changed gender, and he had gotten the female hair and skirt (clothing). Then, I zapped him again, he changed gender to male, and now he has his Quiguki boy clothing as well."

So there you go. Interesting eh? Turns out it works for usukis too! This raises the question of whether this will work for say a desert or halloween pet (that is lacking its clothes) where there isn't a different look for males and females. Drop me a line if you know!

What happens if you fight the lab ray scientist and get a gender change?
Unfortunately, obtaining the opposite gender's appearance and clothes only works with the lab ray. Battling the lab ray scientist won't work - You will not obtain any clothes, and your pet will look the same as before, except it will have the opposite gender's eyes.
So if you had a royal boy poogle, and battled the lab ray scientist and got a gender change, you would then have a royal boy poogle that is technically labeled 'female' on your lookup and pet lookup, but with lovely new eyelashes. But no new clothes! /I think/ same goes for use of a strange potion to change gender - no new clothes!

To reiterate because it seems I have been unclear to some people:

If you ZAP a royal, usuki or quigiki and get a gender change, you will gain the opposite gender's clothes and appearance (and will get to keep the old gender's clothes too, so that means two sets of clothes!).
If you BATTLE the lab ray scientist, nothing will change in appearance except for having the other gender's EYES and the pet will merely be LABELED as the other gender. No new clothes will be gained this way! Same goes for the strange potion.

The Pound and clothes

Pounding

If you pound a pet and it is wearing ANY clothes, be it neopoint, paint brush or NC mall clothes, it will be automatically be taken off and put back in your closet. So, if you're pound surfing, don't expect to find any pets wearing clothes xD

Awww so I found a Lost Desert Peophin in the pound and it doesn't have any clothes! Is there any way I can get its clothes back?

There is actually! There are quite a few nice Neopians who give away their extra paint brush clothes they have from the lab ray, so feel free to check them out!

Transferring

If you transfer a pet, any neopoint clothes it is wearing at the time will go to the new owner. Don't bother trying to send NC mall clothes to a new owner this way though, any NC mall clothes will be taken off and put back in your closet :3

TNT recently changed the transfers system again, so now if a pet has paint brush clothes (not from double painting though), so say a royal pet, regardless of whether or not it is wearing those clothes at the time, when transferred those royal clothes will be dragged out of the closet and go with the pet. Meaning, the only way to keep paint brush clothes on an account would be to pound the pet or repaint the pet.

If you have say, a royal pet, and it has its paint brush clothes, if its wearing them and you transfer, then yes, the clothes will go with it.

However, if you have a cross painted pet, so say a royal pet wearing desert clothes, if you try to transfer, those paint brush clothes not belonging to the pets current colour will be left behind. So using the prior example, the desert clothes that the royal pet was wearing would not go to the new owner, but the royal clothes would be 'dragged out' and would go with the pet.

Now gender switched royals is another fun matter to consider. I'm working off memory of what I've seen on the boards, so I will need to confirm this.
If you have a ROYAL BOY eyrie and you happen to have bothe sets of royal clothes (male and female), but it has had its gender changed to female via lab scientist or strange potion (ie. It still looks male but is labelled 'female' and has eyelashes) ........ then which set of royal clothes will go when the pet is transferred?

The answer is the royal boy clothes. Even though the Royal Boy eyrie is labelled as a female, its appearence is of a royal boy, and the royal boy clothes will be the only ones to transfer. (I think! I'm about 90% sure.)

KEY POINTS

When a pet is pounded, all its clothes are removed and put in your closet.
Only the paint brush clothes belonging to the pets colour will be able to be moved in a transfer. Eg. Desert clothes will only move with a desert pet.
Clothes from a cross painting cannot be moved, so make sure when you cross paint, that account is going to be your pets final home!
Clothes belonging to a pet will 'stick' to a pet when transferred.
You can't move NC clothes either.
