Beginnings
The black forest was clouded over by fog. His heart raced as he ran, pounding through the dark forest in a rush. He, no, they, were outcasts; ruined and expelled by an uncaring and frightful world. Tormented beyond control by this one thing they had done wrong. What was it? Who did it? and how come it had happened? He drilled the accident through his mind over and over again until his head throbbed, heart pounding faster and faster until he ran out of breath. The creature stopped, panting heavily as he looked around him. The woods, unforgiving, snarled back at him and with a long, grievous sigh he turned to a near-by log and lay down. The ache in his chest was not from the run, no; the ache was from his loss: two great friends and one meddlesome apprentice, all who were a league of four at one time or another. Then they came here and, regarded as gods by the natives, lived in harmony and peace. Until one day... oh that fateful day when all but the last was snatched up, leaving the villages in ruin. Oh the horror! And, the people enraged, all the blame somehow fell on the last one that was left here, all alone, uninvited. Thoughts of torture and suffering invaded the creature's mind as he tried to run and escape the memories; his best friends gone. The villagers enraged, and his own mind turned against him. The shame, the horror of it all stood before him as he wept, lying there beside that old rotten wood. What had he done? What could he do? If he went back, no, the villagers would never allow it. But if he went forward... he'd have to disregard the past like nothing happened; make sure no one ever knew of the Four and their unnatural descent. With his mind made up, the creature rose and, with one last sorrowful howl began his life anew, never again to return to the ways of the past.
Or, so he thought...
The Lost Five
~(The following story is going to be the Neopian Times story Kodisku will send in if she receives Renarta. It is also the past, present, and future part of Ren's story, therefore it is considered his 'past, present and future' and will be used as such in this application. Please do not steal anything from this site, including the ideas of the story, for it is considered theft which is a freezable offence. Also, for Kat, I wanted to write this out so that you can see the neo story that he'll be in. x3 [He's also going to be in my Neopian Times comic, The Unusuals, as well as Albiinol, hosted by HorusNight]. Enjoy. x3)~
Note: The quotation marks will not be used. Plain and simple; Neo doesn't like them and deletes them if they start or end a paragraph (I don't know why...), so I'm going to use another symbol for quotations instead of the things themselves. SO, the Key goes as follows:
Renarta: +
HorusNight: ~
Albiinol: *
All other characters will be added sometime if they're important. Unimportant characters will use the $ sign xDDD Thanks!
Chapter One: Introduction
The crunching of leaves snapped the silence of the forest like a dry twig. One voice mumbled to himself incoherently as he trudged through the silence, irritated and fuming. ~Who does he think he is, telling ME what to do? I can do what ever I well please to! Bloody old man, thinking that I'm too young to take over...~ his muttering trailed off as he went on, huffing about an 'old man' gelert.
The voice belonged to a young gelert with a darker-than-usual crimson pelt. His long ears were unique as well; one whip-tip was a few inches short of normal, and the other was a few inches too long. His tail was just right, though his body was long and lanky. He'd always been different, but no one seemed to notice, which was a good thing. He hated being noticed, especially when people told him he was different. He wanted to be like all the others, not different, not unique, just a normal adolesent gelert who fit in with the crowd. Grumbling about this new thought, the gelert plodded on, unaware of the two little eyes watching his larger body stomp about the Enchanted Forest.
HorusNight sighed, defeated, after an hour of arguing with no one. He plopped down on an old rotting log and let another sigh slip through closed lips, making a 'phpppbbbtt' sound that startled a near-by bird. His tail wriggled in the dry leaves and his paws ached from walking on the dry dirt floor. Caked mud flecked up his legs and globbed around his toes and claws while thorns, thistles and pine needles stick out in his fur all over his body. A painfully large Thornberry clung to the fur of his flank, causing a painful 'HOOOWWWWWWWL!' as he pulled it out. Oblivious to this larger gelert's cries, the small creature wobbled forward then tripped, landing with a cute little squeak on it's stomach. Horus lifted his head, looking around sharply.
~Who's there?~ he stood, fur bristling lightly, ~I'm warning you! Come out before I'm forced too-~
He stopped, looking down. A small droolik lay before him, squeaking and squirming, trying to get back upon its back feet. Horus tilted his head lightly, eyebrow raised. He tipped the creature back onto its rear and stared at it. It squeaked shrilly when it saw him, causing him to jump. He inspected the small creature, circling it. Before he spoke to it, he would have to test it, he thought. See if it's a scaredy cat. He stopped infront of the creature, bent down, and growled. It just blinked. He then barked, barked and jumped, kicked and howled and scratched and snarled at the ground, then stopped. Once the dust cleared, he noticed the droolik was just sitting there, staring as if to say 'You are one weird gelert'. At that Horus straightened up, nodded, and looked down at the creature, ~You'll do. So, what's your name, you little thing? Or do I have to give you one?~
The droolik drooled and wagged his tiny tail, pounding it hard against the ground as it grinned. Its wimpy legs started to wiggle and squirm, yet it didn't move anywhere. Its eyes closed as it struggled intently to try and move, now with added wing movement. Still it didn't move anywhere. With a frustraighted grunt the droolik quit, snorting in a huff to himself. Horus just grinned.
~I'll just name you Ra. Well, Nice to meet you Ra, and Welcome to the group. Now, come on, we've got a forest to explore.~ He winked and pulled a green vine from a near-by tree. The vine was tied around the droolik's black collar (the one they all seem to come with) and attatched to Horus' neck. He then began to walk, pulling the little droolik on behind him. Happily, the droolik's tail, legs, and wings began to wag as he was drug along, as if he thought he was walking himself.
Little did they know that four other eyes were watching them, two of which were of the gelert's own race.
*Old Man, eh? Come, Rez, let's go catch up with our Young Apprentice, shall we?* The gelert grinned menacingly as he looked back at Horus from the shade of the tree, petting his Nuk protectively.
The low cackle of the older gelert echoed through the trees as he disappeared into the forest, many plans running through his cranium, *Let's see who's an old man now!*
Chapter Two: Bickering Beginnings
Horus paused in his journey as his ears pirked, alert and tense. Something was wrong... some mysterious presence was there and Horus didn't like it. Ra was squealing, wondering why they had stopped.
~Shh,~ Horus hissed as he listened. Snap. A twig broke as something shivered in the bushels. A snarl, then WHAM! What was that? A beast leapt from the brush and onto Horus, knocking him sideways onto the ground. A small fight broke out as Horus, startled and unaware of who the creature was, beared his fangs and bit the extra skin of the creatures neck. A long howl of pain echoed through the forest, causing birds to fly screaming into the air.
There was a long pause before Horus opened his eyes to look at the creature he was clasped to. With astonishment he let go and spit out the hair in his mouth. Once he realized who he had bitten into, he exasperatively pawed at his tongue to get all of the hairs off to no avail. Albiinol grinned as he turned to the younger gelert, shaking off the saliva from his younger's assault. *So, now that you've almost torn my neck fur off, how're you? Still grumbling about my decision, I hear,* he grinned wickedly as Horus glared malevolently at him.
*What,* Albiinol mock-whined as he walked up to Horus, rubbing against him in a taunting manner, *does wittle ol' Horus not like his elder any more?*
Horus snarled a warning, but Albiinol didn't heed it. He walked back to his place and looked up into the trees, *Resputen, come!*
A loud snort above them signaled Horus to look up. A large Nuk leapt down from the trees and landed on the cold dirt with a heavy pound. Horus had never seen such a muscular petpet before. It was or normal color, but it was very well trained and looked as if it had been through several fights before. Albiinol grinned and stood beside his petpet with an air of pride about him.
~Uh... heh... wow. He's quite a bug 'un, isn't he?~ Horus scooted back slightly from the two, sitting down beside his droolik. Albiinol laughed and, after telling Resputen to sit down, stood before Horus, grinning ear-to-ear with his typical trademark grin.
*So, Horus, What've you been doing for this past week? Mumbling and grumbling about not getting the position, I bet?*
~You know,~ Horus began aggrivatedly, ~If you weren't so cynical and condesending, I might not be so aggrivated.~
*And you know, if you weren't such a stuck up snot I wouldn't have to be so cynical and condesending, but because you just can't seem to get over yourself-*
Horus cut him off by standing and snarling back, ~How dare YOU accuse ME of being stuck-up!~
*And how dare YOU for accusing ME of being something I am! Now, I can't help your stupidity son, but pointing out something I already am, well, that's just plain idiotic.*
Horus narrowed his eyes, looked away, and made a gesture that attempted to brush the comment off but only showed his frustration with the older gelert, ~Look, why are you here?~
*Me?* Albiinol placed a paw on his chest mockingly. Then, at Horus' frustrated look, sighed and laid his shoulders back, *I'm following you. The others...* He stopped. Horus noticed the hurt tone in his old master's voice and stopped, listening closely. Albiinol started again, *The Elders, they liked my choice. Heh. I knew they would. But then... then they liked him too much. They taught him all they knew before he was ready. All that power corrupted him... he overtook the elders with the mind techniques they showed him and made them believe I was a spy. I've no place to go now.*
~Oh...~ Horus lowered his head. Then he stopped. ~Wait, this isn't one of your tricks, is it? And it hasn't been a week... Only a couple of days! Hey!~
But before he could finish Albiinol disappeared. His Nuk was still there, but Albiinol was gone. Horus grunted and grumbled, looking off to the side with a look of irritation. He knew well Albiinol's tricks. If the old man disappeared, he was being insincere, and, often times he would lie to Horus just to teach him a lesson or two about trusting those with mental capabilities. Or even about trusting himself. 'Often if you don't trust yourself about something, you won't trust anyone, even those you love' he'd often say. Then he'd lie and trick the poor gelert into believing his lies. Only then would Horus be stuck in a trance if even for a moment, and the old gelert would disappear. Horus grew tired of his tricks and yet liked them; even if they were annoying. He did grow up with them, so they were like a comfort to him. It told him Albiinol was in a good mood, unlike those times where Albiinol would go into a deep depression. He shuddered at the thought. One time his Master was in such a deep depression he sucked himself and Horus into a dark vortex of nothingness for two nights, frightening the pup to where he wouldn't trust his Master for a week. Oh, but he loved him. Not in the wrong way, no, but more like a Father-Son bonding love. Sorrow began to fill Horus as he thought back on his past... those sad, sad memories of loss, loneliness and lost ambitions...
The strangest part of it was the whole idea that they were playing with the mind. Thinking, outside the box, if you will. Albiinol had the strange knack of using his telekenisis and telepathy to trick those minds weaker than himself and use his little tricks to gain popularity, fool the rouges, and even torture his apprentice into beleiving him. Not always, though. Horus soon learned what and how to disipher his Master's tricks. If Albiinol was lying, he would do three things: One, his tone of voice would change. Two, he would disapear and Three, somehow, some way, he would trick you into closing your eyes, lowering your head, or looking up so you couldn't see him disappear...
*HEY! HORUS!*
Horus nearly leapt out of his skin as Albiinol appeared behind him, hanging upside down from a tree. *HORUS! I found something!*
~Not now, old man,~ he grumbled, losing the once apparent affection for his Master.
*No, really! I seriously found something! You've gotta check this out!*
Horus sighed and rolled his eyes. As he turned around he noticed that Albiinol wasn't behind him anymore. ~Albiinol?~
*Come on Horus!* he heard his Master's voice call from the brush in front of his nose, *Follow my voice you slow poke!*
~Master? Wait! Albiinol waiiit!~ He stood up and leapt into the brush, oblivious to the fact that Ra was still attached to his neck. He chocked once, Ra squeaked, then they were off.
Chapter Three: The Chase and Exploration
Horus heaved as he ran after Albiinol. ~Waiiit!~ He called aggravatedly, ~WAAIT!~
*Come on you slow poke, you'll never catch me at that speed!* Albiinol laughed as he swung ahead, using his mind tricks to help him along the trees.
Horus had had enough. He grinned, losing all irritation, and got lost in the game. ~Slow poke, eh? I'll show him who's a slow poke!~
Almost forgetting that Ra was attached to his neck, Horus tore down the path at full speed. He looked back and swerved just before Ra and himself almost hit a tree. Then, thinking that Ra would appreciate not bumping into tree branches and the like, Horus stopped, tied Ra to his back, and took off again. Ra squealed with delight as he and the gelert ran and ran, faster and deeper into the forest. Branch by branch, leaf by leaf, Horus was gaining on Albiinol. The old gelert felt a shocking slice of fear and anticipation run up his spine as he watched the younger Horus catch up with him. Oh, but it wasn't over yet. He'd give him a run for his money, he would.
Horus felt himself begin to slow down. He clenched his teeth and pushed himself more, despite his burning insides. The more he pushed, the harder his body worked, the less his breathing came. He would've collapsed if not for the humiliation of failing in front of his master. Then his legs stopped cooperating. They must've been really deep in the forest now, for the ferns grew closer together. But... these weren't ferns. They slowly began to grow outwards, and become more jungle-like. Horus tripped over a log and collapsed, lying on his side while a distraught Ra squealed and squirmed. He panted and sighed heavily, heart pounding so hard he thought it would fall out. Albiinol landed before him and looked curiously down at him.
*Why'd you stop? You trip or something?*
Horus grumbled and rolled his eyes annoyed-like, forcing himself to sit up. He rolled his tongue out of his mouth and panted, listening to Albiinol's blabbering.
*See wat I told you? Isn't this place unique? It goes straight from forest to jungle! How weird!* Albiinol looked around and plopped down. Rez walked up from behind him and laid down as well, a snooty look on his face.
~Well,~ Horus began, ~I don't suppose you'll want to look around this place, eh old man?~ he said sarcastically. By the glow in the old gelert's eye he'd have this place searched from top to bottom in no time. He just hoped that he himself wouldn't have to aid him in his explorations.
*Oh, come on, you ol' coot! You need this exercise more than I do!* Albiinol winked and ran off as an exasperated Horus chased after him playfully.
~*~ The sound of heavy breathing echoed through the heart of the deep jungle as Horus, Albiinol, and their petpets walked, sweating heavily, through the trees.
~Oooh my paws.~ Horus groaned as he laid down tiredly. ~Well, we explored the whole jungle and nothing interesting came up-~
*Not true,* Albiinol said, wide-eyed as he looked ahead. *What's that?*
A soft tranquil sound floated through the air as Horus watched Albiinol move forward, ~What? What is it, Master?~
*A song... I know that song... its so familiar...* He looked around. The words drifted like faeries over the gentle breeze,
We're walking in the air...
Horus stood and walked over to Albiinol, who had stepped into a haven of sorts.
...We're floating in the moon-lit sky...
As they looked around, both gelerts new they had reached a sacred place in the forest, the Eye. Trees circled all around the area, leaving a large radius of nothing but grass, moss, and a small stream that trickled through the center of the area. Low hanging branches of the bare swamp trees held all kinds of beads, strings, and concoctions that glowed in small vials. Faeries danced about the sky, close to the thick jungle canopy while strangely glittering, glowing, fluorescent flowers budded and bloomed all around the area. There was a gigantic stump near the southeast part of the Eye where a door was carved out of it. Horus walked in, mystified by all these new sights.
*I've never seen plants like these. They've got to be an undiscovered species!* Albiinol brushed his wrinkled paw against a light blue petal of a rather large flower. It's enclosed petals unraveled to release blue and aqua sparkles that floated and danced across the breeze.
The whole scene had movement and motion about it. The light breeze blew back and fourth, orchestrating the plants to sway in a rhythmatic trance. The stream bubbled and crinkled softly, flaunting elegance and boasting wonderfully clear water. Horus wondered how such clean water could be flowing through such brown dirt.
Just then a gruff, low, older voice called out from behind them.
+What're you doing here?+
Chapter Four: The Five
+Well, what're you two doing here?+
The voice belonged to an old gelert, even older than Albiinol. He stood tall, about five feet tall, from shoulder to paw. His long ears and tail weren't really ears or a tail, they were long tentacles; his ear-tentacles had two suction cups that were green and were dark, reddish brown, while his tail had three, all of the same hue. Around the end of his tail was a long string of diamond and orb shaped beads, the orbs a green hue and the triangles blue. At the end of the beads rested a broken glass orb, possibly once belonging to a gypsy or 'teller. A pair of small white horns jutted out and back from his eyebrows, and a larger pair jutted out from the top of his skull between his ears. Large spiney bangs rested over his right cheek, covering that half of his face in light green and light brown tipped hair. His muzzle was of the same hue, in a marking that went from behind his 'frown line' up then over behind his eyes, then up to curl around to the back of his head and down again infront of his shoulders, wrapping around his chest. A greying beard ran from his chin, down to his chest where it progressed into heavy chest fur, then down between his back legs to hang slightly off of the bottom of his tail's base. A light brown horn, the same color of his hair's tips, protruded from his center forhead out and split into one curving horn and one jagged, then straight out horn that curved into a concave hook. A net that looked more like a spider web hung between both ends of his horn. His front paws were green, with a fire-like marking crawling up almost to his knees in a vine-like fasion. Small tufts of green fluff hung from his front paws, an a broken, cracked, chain-less shackle clung to his left paw. His build was big, more like a mutant gelert only larger, with two more pairs of horns jutting out of his back in a dark grey hue. Two glowing balls hovered between these two horns, spinning and humming in an unknown frenzy of light. A thick leather belt wrapped around his waist, full of vials and leather bags glowing with faerie light. Horus was shocked at the new gelert's back legs: instead of paws, they had cloven hooves! With thick, greying hair just like the front ones, only these were brown. His eyes were a shocking green instead of white, with no iris' and dark green pupils. They guessed him to be mutant.
+Well?+
~Um... We, kind sir, were just, uh, looking around. What a nice place you've got here! Okay, well, we'll just leave now. Bye!~ Horus began to shove Albiinol out of the Eye.
*Horus, wait! I know you,* Albiinol pulled away from the nervous young gelert and walked up to his elder, *From somewhere...*
The older gelert scrutinized Albiinol, raising an eyebrow. He was familiar, yes, he thought. Those black and white markings, blobs of color separated by brown streaks that never let them touch or two of the same color near one another. The bent and squiggly tips of his ears and tail and that deeply concave nose of his... yes, even the name was familiar. Albiinol. Could he have been...? No, he would never let that come to mind. Never.
+I would appreciate it if you would just leave me and my Haven alone. Goodbye, young sirs.+
*Wait! I do know you! You're that...* Albiinol stopped. The harsh glare from the elder gelert caused him to forget everything he was thinking of. Something happened in his mind; he short circuted and stood there, studdering like blundering fool.
~Wheeeheheell, we've got to go now Albiinol. Come on, lets go,~ Horus walked up to him then tried to shove his Master along, but he wouldn't budge. He groaned and kept shoving, grunting a 'Come on you old man' as he did so. Albiinol didn't move.
+Wait, let him go,+ the elder rushed over to Horus and pushed him gently aside. Horus grumbled but didn't fight.
+Something's happened to him... like a trance...+ the gelert sat down and pulled a vial from his belt, opening it up. He pulled the cork out of the top and ran the vial under Albiinol's nose, letting the blue smoke from within it run up his nose. At once Albiinol came to life and coughed, falling back to his flanks.
The elder smiled, +That's real strong stuff, works every time.+
Horus raised an eyebrow and walked over to Albiinol's side, looking at the elder gelert, ~So who are you, anyways?~
+I am Renarta, the Medicine Man,+ He replied, brushing his large left paw over the unblossomed petals of a blue flower and taking some of the seeds from within. He ground them and sprinkled them into the empty vial, then replaced it in his belt.
~Renarta, eh? Nice ring to it. What is that stuff, anyways?~ Horus looked at Ren's belt and cleared his throat nervously.
+'Tis Colosun Seed. It wakes up anyone from a trance, even Stone pets.+
~Ah... I - uh - see,~ Horus leaned back and tried not to look too impressed. ~What is this place, anyways? I've never seen it, let alone knew it existed.~
+It's Chaleeman, my secret jungle haven. I hid it inside the large Enchanted Forest so that no one would bother me. Yet you two have seemed to foil that plan.+ He looked at the young gelert and grinned. Horus chuckled out of slight embarassment.

Lyrics
We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly
I'm holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly so high above with you
Far across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills
The forests and the streams
Children gaze open mouth
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes
We're surffing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy
Mountain floating by
Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep
Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep
We're walking in the air
We're floating in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly
