Updates

5 Feb 09 - It looks like I have not updated for so long, but I have, actually. I just felt it was unnecessary to spam this box. New adoptables for Raschel have been added and still are, along with customs I did for others. Adoptables of Raschel are now from newest to oldest.

10 Jan 09 - Added the extras section right at the end. Also added an adoptable gotten through a trade. New adoptables are available now.

9 Jan 09 @ 7:22:22 am NST - Can finally place this where it should be, after 8 days of waiting. Raschel couldn't be transferred out in the first week of creation, and this new account couldn't edit petpages or anything till it was a day old. :D

4 Jan 09 - Page is now in total petpage format. He's real to me now, whether I got the original or not. Though, I'm still seeing whether I should save up 8 mil or not.

First Meeting

The first time we meet, what is told?

We judge too much on appearance. Doing so is like trying to see every detail in the dark. If we open our minds and our hearts to others, we can find that we now have a torch. A torch that illuminates so well that by then to us that everyone is beautiful. Because that's the truth.

This is the story of Raschel. He's a little different from us. But that doesn't make him a monster.

Look at the picture there. Take a close look. When you're done, move on. And see what difference that torch can make. First impressions don't always matter; that is, once you find the time to know someone better.

Identity

This is who I am

The garderner's hands are black with earth but his leaves are white
- Albanian Proverb

Full Name: Raschel Uematsu
Commonly known as: Raschel; Ras
Family Name: Uematsu (Japanese kanji: 植松)
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Species: Half Krawk-Half Draik Hybrid (Drawk is insulting to him)
Paint: Mutant; but that's just because his heritage is unknown to others.
Wings: No real wings; extra limb with feathers attached in Anthro form.
Height (anthro): Six feet five.
Height (quad): Three feet four.
Length (quad): Five feet nine.
Occupation: Gardener*

*I studied a little Japanese before - Chinese and Japanese kanji (汉字) words have the same meaning. His name inspired his story and occupation. More info about this random research I did is at the end of Part Two.

Personality: Rather protective, especially of Sal. Usually doesn't take advice; for instance he tends to talk to plants despite being advised not to. Rather jovial; and usually doesn't get angry... though if he does it is encouraged to stay a little further away compared to usual. He's indecisive at times. He also likes sticking to the status quo. He doesn't like change, and if it is ineviatable, he'll probably have some trouble adapting.

Design

The design for Raschel came from me wanting his extra pair of limbs to be more than just... well, a pair of limbs. I wanted his design to show that he is a Mutant Krawk so the six limbs had to remain. I started thinking of this extra limbs that could morph into wings... I started thinking of him being a draik-krawk mix... when finally, I remembered about this book I had as a (younger) child about how birds were evolved from dinosaurs, and how those dinosaurs had feathers attached to their limbs before they evolved to true wings. And so I present the design for Raschel.

It's nothing too complex.

Shortcomings

It defines us too

My broken wings, still strong enough to cross the ocean with
My broken wings, how far should I go drifting in the wind?
Across the sky, just keep on flying...

---- My Broken Wings

Although Raschel has wings, they are not large enough to be able to sustain him in flight. Try as he might, the most that he can do is glide. In short, he cannot fly at all. His mother, after all, is a Krawk, and Krawks aren't meant to have wings. His father may be a Draik, but his wings aren't exactly meant for flying. More about his parents is in the next section.

Gliding might seem rather useless, but it can be used to help Raschel land safely. There are times when it is much easier to go to a place of lower elevation directly downwards rather than taking the long path down.

Parentage

Those who will never be forgotten

Raschel has never known who exactly her father was, except that he was one of the few plant Draiks left. This particular species - not much is known about them, owing to the fact that they prefer to live in the comfort of large forests, and they can easily blend in. Raschel's father's name was Shay, and he died shortly after Raschel hatched from his shell, according to some news that came to the village Raschel lived in.

Most of the care taking of Raschel was done by his mother, Jien. He grew up with krawks in a village by a mountainside. Due to her rather high authority there as her now deceased father was once the adviser of the village head, most kept quiet about how different Raschel was. Although it was never spoken out, the tension between her and the other village members was becoming increasingly obvious. The façade that they all put up made life difficult for everyone. Raschel noticed it when he was slightly older, and he volunteered to leave. Though it breaks both their hearts, she accepted that it was best for him, and he knew that it was something that had to be done.

Occupation

The job that needs to be done

The love of gardening is a seed that once sown never dies
- Gertrude Jekyll

As mentioned, Raschel is a gardener, and yet, at the same time, not. (Ah, it sounds really ridiculous, but still.) When we say gardener, we tend to think of someone employed by someone rich with his own backyard garden that's probably the size of a few average-sized bedrooms. Raschel though, he isn't tied down like this.

The only help with plants he offer is to friends that he meets along the way adventuring - and that is pretty much what he actually does - with Sal of course (who we shall meet next). Unless he feels that some plant is in dire need of help and it is essential that it survives, he will not help take care for it. He very much holds on to the belief that life should not be trifled with... except where it is absolutely necessary.

Raschel's powers with plants aren't that strong because he is only a half. He can only gather information like who is around from botanical specimens within thirty feet. He doesn't have any healing or restorative powers. Any 'magic' he can do with plants is just the time and dedication he spends with them.

For someone who is a full blood though, like his father, they can probably control the plants to follow their will.

Companion

To help me through each day

He that plants trees loves others besides himself
- Thomas Fuller

We all need someone to accompany us. Loneliness isn't a good thing. For Raschel, he has found a small friend to go with him whereever his path and journeys takes him.

Name: Sal
Gender: Female
Age: Probably three; Sal doesn't talk much.
Species: Karren
Special Features: Has a tail.
Personality: Curious about her surroundings. She gets into more trouble more than she can help Raschel.

Like Raschel, Sal can't fly. Both of them enjoying gliding together, though. Sal is also completely blind in both eyes, but her sense of hearing is very sharp.

Past

Everyone has his own story...this is mine

The rose has thorns only for those who would gather it
- Chinese Proverb

There's random full stops around the place so that the quotation marks can be seen. Sorry about that.

Prologue:
prelude to chaos

."Go back to your village, Jien," Shay's voice was stern, but within it there was a hint of concern.

."I can't do that. They won't let me go back. Even if they do, I won't face that sort of shame." She shook her head lightly.

."Yes you can," he insisted. Taking in a deep breath, he continued, "The chief guy you used to tell me about. He'll protect you. He'll let you say."

."That's not the point."

."You cannot stay here. I'm ill, and I may just die anytime. It isn't safe out here for you. It's the middle of nowhere!" Shay's voice became louder as he spoke the sentence. Calming down, he said, "Please. I beg you."

."That's just cruel."

."Life is cruel. There's nowhere for me to go. But you have somewhere." he sighed. "Please." he repeated. He stared down at what she held in her arms.

Jien stared down at the bundle of cloth in her arms, wrapped around a single egg. "Fine," she relented. She looked toward the ground, as the tears formed in her eyes. Shay rested a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

."Don't cry; this is for the better."

."I.. I know. It's just that... never mind, You're right," she said. "Good bye." She turned and walked away before she could change her mind.

."Good bye," he said, and disappeared into the trees.

A cloaked figure moved quickly through the forest. The rain was pouring down, as though the sky was bawling for the sad fate of the stranger. Night was falling.

."Running like this is... is just ridiculous," she muttered. She could barely hear her own voice, but the panic and breathlessness that was present in it was evident. The beating of the rain against the leaves and the ground was near deafening. "Just a little more," she said to herself.

There was a package in her hands. It was wrapped with layer upon layer of cloth. And she held it tightly, close to her heart. "I'll protect you," she said. Tears ran down her cheeks, but it was soon mixed with the rain.

Finally in the distance, she could see the dark shadow of a mountain. "We're finally home," she whispered in relief.

As she walked over the small hill, down in the valley she could faintly make out the small houses dotted along the mountainside. Walking down the hill, she almost stumbled into the village.

Straightaway, she headed towards the chief's house. It was still lighted inside. He was still awake. That was a good sign.

Hurriedly, she pounded on the door, trying to be louder than the rain on the roof. The door swung open a few seconds later. Tne chief had opened it. She stumbled in fell down onto the floor, but all the while with the bundle held tightly.

."Welcome back, Jien. I see you're tired," the chief chuckled to himself - for she was already fast asleep.

Chapter One:
right at the start

The village was a buzz with excitement. It was the day. The day that the old village chief had declared that the egg would hatch. Whenever there was such news, everyone would get excited. It was a new life, a new addition to the big family in the village. Everyone gathered at Jien's hut, staring intently at the egg for the sign of a crack.

The egg sat in the middle of a nest made of dry twigs and leaves, inside the hut of red brick. Jien sat next to it, with her tail around the nest. The bright colouration on it was unusual, and the outstanding colour made it seem like the surroundings were dull. Many had questions about the egg, and why it was like this. Who was the father? How come he is never mentioned? Jien was away for a while too... wonder where she went? The nosy ones kept their questions away from the ears of the chief, for they feared that they would be punished. Jien's father after all, was one respected by many. Even after his death, his presence still seemed to be there.

Crick.

."I think it's hatching. Look!" one of the younger children pointed at a small black line that was evident on the light shell.

Everyone held their breath in anticipation.

Click. A longer line formed on the shell.

Crack. The line ran down from the top to the bottom of the egg.

With a final Crack, The shell fell into half, revealing the tiny form of a krawk. No. It wasn't a krawk. What was it? It had horns. It had wings. "It's weird," a young krawk piped up. A murmur ran through the crowd.

."It is a he," Jien hissed angrily. She slapped her tail in front of the newborn, making a barrier between him and the others.

."There's nothing wrong with him. Now everyone, move along," the chief requested everyone to go back to what they were doing. Obediently, they listened to his instruction. Turning back to Jien, he told her, "Don't worry about it."

."I'm not worrying. He's perfect. I know he is." Although her voice was filled with conviction, a single tear still rolled down her cheek as she lay down on the bare floor, next to her son. "My darling child..." she whispered.

Chapter Two:
early memories

Whenever Raschel walked around the village and there were always murmurs from the other villages. No matter that the others could be doing - cleaning the house, talking with their friends, reading - they would always look up at Raschel when he walked by with his mother. To his naive young mind, he did not yet understand why he was different, and why it even mattered.

One day, he learned why everyone looked at him. It was the first time his mother let him wander off by himself. He decided to join a group of young Krawks his age playing by the edge of the large forest. Casually, he walked up to them.

."Can I join you?" he asked politely. "I'll take turns," he added a smile.

As he smiled, one of the young boys cringed away. "Ew."

Raschel looked around, and at himself. "What's wrong? Is there something on me?" He craned his neck backwards even to see if there was anything stuck on him.".

."No..." another young boy piped up. "It's actually that -".

."It's YOU, alright?" one of the older girls in that group said.

Raschel could hardly believe his ears! "Me? What did I do.".

The girl shrugged. "Like I know. Look, all we know is that we should stay away from you. Apparently you spead diseases. Or something. You're different and weird." She backed away with a look of disgust on her face. At that cue, the rest of the group followed.

."That's not true!" Raschel protested. "I'm just like all of you!"

."Nuh - uh," the smallest girl in the group said softly. "You have them pointy things on your head."

."Yeah, and you have the fluffy bit at the end of your tail," one of the boys who spoke earlier said. Raschel flicked his tail forward and saw the blue tuft. He looked up at the rest of the Krawks. Their tails did not have anything at the end.

."But why's that bad?" he asked.

."My mum says that your father is some evil monster dragon that eats children up," one child offered.

."But I didn't DO anything!" Raschel couldn't help but wail.

The other children decided that they have had enough. They stopped facing Raschel, turned around, and ran back to their homes, telling their mothers what had just happened.

Raschel's voice had also caught the attention of his mother. She came running to him. "Are you hurt?" she glanced anxiously around for any cuts and bruises. Raschel shook his head.

."They... they.. wo- won't let me.. p-play..." he said in between sobs. "A-and t...they... s-said.. my d-dad's a m-m-monster. H-he's not...r-right? Y-you sa-said he's j-just... d..di..differ-rent."

Upon hearing this, Jien grabbed Raschel by his hand and marched into the village. "What is going on?" she demanded. "What did he ever do to you?"

The parents of the other children murmured among themselves, but none answered. A growl rose from her throat.

One of the parents finally spoke up. "We're sorry, we can't risk having our children getting infected." After that, they all went back to their own houses.

Although Jien shouted at them demanding an explanation, they ignored her. However, her shouting brought the chief out of his house.

."Jien," he frowned at her. "What's the problem."

."What's the problem? I'll TELL you what's the problem. They think Raschel is some alien from outer space with a deadly virus, that's the problem!" After letting the anger out, Jien's angry face melted away as she too had tears in her eyes. "Why can't they accept him?"

The chief said, "Why don't you bring back Raschel to the hut to rest. Then you can come by and we can have a little talk.".

Jien made sure Raschel was fast asleep before she left the hut. With a sigh, she entered the chief's home.

."Jien... have a seat."

Jien sat.

."Did you think this would not happen?" the chief asked her. "When you left, you seemed certain that you weren't coming back, much less with Raschel.".

."I didn't want to come back. He asked me to.".

."I see. It's a wise thing. Look, the people around here are good folk..."

."But they-!".

."Shh... Listen to what I have to say... They're good folk, they just are not used to having something different. We're traditional, Jien. We don't live in the big metropolitan city. we live in a real jungle, not an urban jungle!" the way the old chief talked made Jien want to listen. "Perhaps you can say we aren't that open to new ideas. Hybrids are unheard of in this part.".

."I was from here too. But I accepted the change," she argued

."You left and experienced the world. It's different. Look. I know you may not want to hear this now of all times, but eventually, Raschel should leave this place...".

."You're chasing him out too?! How could you!" she nearly screamed at him.

."Jien, listen to me. He'll want to leave. This place is torture for him. You know that. Don't be so selfish. The folk here can accept you again, but not him. Once he's independent, let him go.".

."Fine. I'll think about it."

Chapter Three:
those left behind

A few years later...

Raschel felt that he has had enough. He had lived in this village long enough, and he wanted to leave. The ignoring, the staring, and the rumours were enough. He marched into the chief's hut. "I'm leaving this place!" he declared.

The old chief was writing some things down. "Mm-hmm. So why are you here?"

."I'm saying good bye..."

."Where's your mother?" he asked Raschel.

."At home. She says that she won't see me off or she wouldn't bear to let me leave.".

."So... she changed her mind after all. And here I thought he was running away from home..." the chief laughed softly to himself.

."Excuse me?"

."No, no... nothing." the chief smiled and spun around to face Raschel. "You're a good kid. Your mother raised you well."

."Thanks," Raschel whispered shyly. He wasn't used to getting compliments from others. No one usually gave him anything but stares.

."So, what do you think you'll be doing?".

."I don't know. I just want to get to know the world. Any maybe more about myself, and plants. Since, we're, you know, related. Sort of.".

."Ha! Ha! Ha!" the chief laughed, not meaning any ill. "Of course, of course. Take care Raschel. I hope you find the answers that you are looking for."

."But I'm not exactly looking for anyt-".

."You are Raschel. You just need to realise that. Good bye now," with that the chief chased Raschel out of his house.

Inhaling a deep breath, Raschel turned and walked toward the forest. However, he was stopped by a shout.

."Raschel! Ras-chel! RAS-chel...!" he turned around, eyebrow slightly raised. Jien was running towards him, a frantic look plastered across her face.

."Mom? You can't stop me, I'm -"

."I'm not going to. I just want to say good bye properly. I know that it's unlikely you will come back, and equally unlikely I'll leave here." Jien said as she stopped in front of Raschel. She bent down a little, resting her hands on her knees, panting a little.

."What? Of course I'm coming back! I can't leave you here alone with no one to care for you..."

."Sometimes, it's what happens in life. We can't control it. I don't want for this too, but it's the best thing for you. And learning more about the world is probably what you'd find more... applicable to you."

Raschel felt the tears well up in his eyes. "I'll miss you, mom," he sniffed. He threw his arms around her to hug her.

."As will I Raschel," she returned the hug.

As they both came to be an arm's length from each other again, Raschel brushed away the tears from his eyes. He noticed the tears in his mother's eyes and said, "It's for the better."

."Yes it is," she whispered, "but it's not always for the happier." She wiped away the tears with her arm.

Just like the time I left Shay, she thought to herself.

She watched the figure of Raschel get smaller and smaller as he went further and further away. With a final wave, he disappeared into the forest.

."It's for the better," she repeated to herself.

Chapter Four:
sal
Told in Raschel's point of view.

I have been walking for a long time now. It's only been two days since I left my old home, but I feel like it has been longer. I realise that I don't remember much about it with the exception of my mother. Her caring face, always protecting me, always comforting me...

It's not that I do not appreciate it; it's just that it could also be the very thing that's making me weak. Others' opinions of me should never have mattered. After all, who likes something different? I know for sure that I certainly don't. Change is something that I fear... sigh... Walking can be so boring sometimes. Which is why I am talking to myself right now.

To be continued...
(Raschel actually meets Sal by tripping over her - and they become friends because Sal doesn't run away from him as he's different because she can't see him.)

Chapter Five:
a new life

To be continued...
(Raschel finds out more about what he can do with plants as they were scare in the mountainside where he lived. The forest does not count since it is forbidden to go there.)

Raschel: W-why...am I so different?

Jien: Because you're special.

Raschel: Then why does everyone think...

Jien: They just don't understand you.

RP Info

General Things

No godmoding. I'm generally fine with most characters and species, though you should neomail shadowedstarr and ask. In terms of location, although I generally prefer it if Raschel is near some sort of botanic lifeforms, it isn't mandatory. Note that he can't swim so try to keep RPs out of the water.

I prefer to do this somewhere else rather than neomail by neomail if possible.

Do come up with some sort of plot outline before hand, so I know where things are going. Some background info about the place and your character will definitely be helpful.

Raschel will mainly be roleplayed anthro. He can do more things. Do note - my anthro does not refer to human-anthro.

This is a roleplay with Avero.

Raschel in green

Avero in Purple

From within the darkness, Raschel could only make out another shadow beyond the oak tree two dozen feet away. Someone else was inside the forest, and the plants around him confirmed it. This isn't going to be good, he thought. No one would be in the forest at this time unless they were up to something. Crouching down, Raschel took a careful step forward and headed in the direction of the oak tree.

When he was a mere nine feet from the majestic tree, he crouched down and squinted his eyes. He figured that it was probably close enough to see who the intruder was.

Avero was out strolling at night again. The luminous souls atop the plants glowed a bright emerald green, making it easy for him to see his way around. Kneeling on the ground, Avero touched the grass on the ground. They were cool to his touch. Plucking a single glass blade from the earth, he held it up to his face.

The green glow from above the grass dimmed. It meant that the grass was getting weaker. When the glow was finally extinguished, it would mean the end of life. Avero chuckled to himself. "Life is so fragile, is it not?" Gently, he placed the grass back down with the others. Closing his eyes in concentration, he placed the grass so that when it was on the ground again, its glow was as bright was it was before he had touched it.

It was then that he felt that there was someone looking at him. It had to be so... the glow around was not all green. Blue meant that it was another creature. His head turned to the left, and to his shock he found that the creature before him... whoever he was... whatever he was, had a soul of turquoise.

He was so busy observing what the other being was doing. From the distance, Raschel could feel the life leaving that grass it as left the floor, but when it was placed down, the life went back into it. Was this intruder also someone who had the gift of being able to communicate, feel, and control plants?

He noticed movement in front of him. The intruder was staring at him in the face. Taken by surprise, Raschel fell backward. A small "ompf" escaped his lips as he lost his balance and ended up sitting on the forest floor.

Laughing sheepishly, Raschel got to his feet, regaining his composure. "What are you doing here?" he demanded to know, his voice harsher than he wanted it to be.

The strong voice of the other creature threw Avero into a defensive mode. "Is this your forest?" he questioned in a stony voice. "What are you anyway? Some sort of plant?" Avero easily gets angry when there was anything relating to his gift. He knew that this guy - whoever he was - had seen what he was doing: Playing with the life of plants. For him, it didn't matter. He hated his gift. No one had to know, and that was all that mattered to him.

."Sorry. It's just that... those who come here at this time only want something from the forest," Raschel apologised. Looking down, he continued, "The plants told me that there was someone here. I just came to take a look." He took extra care to ensure that he did not mention anything at all about how he was related to plants. He could just pass it off as a 'gift' he had - feeling what the plants wanted. He did not want to mention anything about his family.

I'm still a beginner at roleplay. ^^;

Extras

What's last might be the most important ;)

Here's some rather random stuff relating to Raschel. Mainly they were for the application process more than anything. :)

Comic

It's really quite badly drawn especially the later pages as I had to rush to complete it. And even so, it took me about six hours just to draw it. e_e It's my first comic as well so forgive me, yes?

The events here take place between chapter two and three in Raschel's story.

Origins of Raschel's Story

You have heard the story of how Raschel's design came about. Raschel sparked the design in me himself. But how about his story? And the really weird roleplay? Plant-krawk-draik? Where did it come from? Has Star watched too much Chinese Drama Serials (there was one about plant beings a few years back...)? Well... maybe.

Seriously speaking though, his story idea sprang from me finding out how Uematsu is written in kanji - and hence understanding the meaning. From the 'tsu', I guessed that Uematsu was a probably a Japanese word. However, I wasn't sure if it... really existed in kanji - which was what I needed since it would have a meaning, not katakana (which is used to pronounce foreign words in Japanese and has no meaning).

Both words '植松' (in Chinese pronounced: zhi2 song1 not zhi song as it looks... anyway. x_x) are written starting with something in common...which is 木. 木 means wood - literal translation, or it can mean tree. The first word '植' refers to plants, trees included, and the second word '松' refers to a type of tree - whatever it is called in English I'm not certain.

Anyone who knows Chinese and reads this, please forgive this ridiculously pathetic attempt to explain the meaning of Chinese words and pronunciation.

Continuing with where I got my inspiration - Uematsu is Raschel's family name, so his dad should be related to plants. Started reminding me of the Vine Dragons in Dragon Cave... and how pretty they are... and possibly how Raschel's parents may have met. Hey, maybe one of the days I'm free I'll write about his parents... it'll be really fun... hahaha...

Images

This was to show how I drew the reference pic of Raschel in Paint, step-by-step as a MS Paint picture was required to apply.

After drawing that first picture of Raschel in MS Paint, I started to shade the way I did in MS Paint. I was never really confident of my shading, so last time it was just a light brush. You can see the difference from the picture below. It's more obvious for full-body pictures though.

Peter's Review

Well, this was what Peter, the owner of the original Raschel, wrote about what he thought of my app. I'm glad he thought I was one of the best three. ^^

There's more soon in this section. Just wait. ^^
