Radiance of the Sun

The Radiance of the Sun
Version 1: Breaking Clouds

The sun breaks over a broken landscape, piercingly bright over the light-bleached grass and pale brown stone. Life is little and far between. Lizards, stunted trees, rabbits. Not much more can survive in such a rugged, windy place. Of course...I live here, too.

I was born in the arid regions west to the Lost Desert. My kind were primarily traveling hunters. They abhorred magic in any form, due to the abuse of it many years ago. Mostly is had been bred out, and the vague memories I recall are of brown, grey, and sandy-colored lupes. Plain, with no adornment. I was born with stripes and markings, and of course the telltale signs of magic: The white wings of the Wind element...and the Sun of Light. The pack tolerated me only until I was old enough to clumsily catch my own food, and then they drove me out. My own parents included.
I traveled north. Many times in my desert crossing I very nearly died of hunger or thirst. I was completely alone.
I realized at some point that the sround was no longer stinging sand, but was growing rockier, harder. In the distance, I could see the outlines of plateaus over the dunes. The change in scenery was enough to lift my broken spirits.
I reached the edge of a cliff that overlooked a desolate landscape. The grass in the valley was dry, and crackled in the wind. It was nearly bone-white from the sun, interspersed with greener living stalks. Mesas and wondrous rock formations rose from the ground like fangs of long-dead giants. I saw the sparkle of water at the base of one of the plateaus.
This was my place. I knew it when I laid eyes on it.

And as for the magic that I was driven away from my family for...there was nothing vile about it all. I didn't have to learn magic, it was as much a part of me as my paws, or my eyes. Maybe more. I was able to do amazing things. When the land became too parched, I could call forth clouds and bring rain into my valley. It never burst into bloom like a fairytale...the soil was too poor for that, but the grass seemed to grow more thickly, more green in the stalks. The spring I saw on the first day expanded into a little creek with more water. The stunted trees grew leaves that looked healthier than ever...Truly, I was home.

I've only had one visitor to my valley in all my time. The wanderer called himself Northwind, and he stayed only one day to rest from his travels. I'm afraid I was a rather remote host, since Northwind was the first I'd come across in years...I did like him, though...I hope he passes through again.

Maybe someday...I hope. He would have to be willing to stay here in my valley, though...because I'm not leaving it.
