Hello guest, I see you have stumbled upon my Petpet Rescue guide. (Please excuse the bland layout - I'm too lazy to get a good one.) My name is Zee, my username is Zylp. The account on which this petpage is - bunn3hlicious - is a side account. Since this is my first time making a guide, pardon me if I am not too skilled at it. Neomail me on Zylp if I left out any details or anything.

NOTE: This guide is for getting the avatar ONLY. If you're going for a Petpet Rescue trophy, I can't exactly help you. I'm not THAT skilled, sorry =D

Anyway, enough of the idle chatter and let's get to work. *fishes out notecards out of stack of papers and begins to read*

The above image you see is one you might be longing for right now - and after you've accomplished it, you may be detesting the game which has gotten you it. Unless, of course, you're unusually skilled at it and get the avatar within a couple of times of no practice. But then again, if you're one of those people, what are you doing, reading this guide? This is to help people who are as pathetic at games as I am, or maybe, just this one game in particular. This guide is to give step-by-step hints and also to reassure you - I started out horrible at this game, and considered myself lucky to get a 5. But in a week or so, I managed to get the avatar score with some effort and time. If I can do it, so can you. All you need is some practice. It can get frustrating, so once in a while you might want to take a break from playing it. Chat on the boards, or something. If you obsess over it like I did, you'll start to see icicles wiggling at the top of your vision in your sleep. And that's not good.

Let's start out with the basics. The first thing you need to know is how the game is played. If you haven't ever touched Petpet Rescue before in your life, I suggest you head on over to the games room and play some practice sessions. Once you've familiarized yourself with its basic workings, I'll go over them in a bit more detail.

The Controls - You move using the arrow keys, which should be pretty simple.
The Objective - For each level, you need to rescue a certain amount of petpets. You rescue them by going to the spot where they are, which will pick them up, and bringing them to the door.
The Obstacles - There are numerous ways to lose a life. If you're in a moving cart and you get off into lava, or if you crash into the side in the cart. If you get struck by a boulder/icicle. Last but not least, if you run out of time.
The Bonus - Along the way, you'll see that there are gems which will get you points. Pink gems are worth 5 points, blue gems are worth 10 and green gems are worth 15.
The Lives - Even though it says 3, you have 4 lives in total. If you're carrying a petpet when you lose a life, that petpet will go back to its original position.
The Time - You have 99 seconds each level to rescue the required amount of petpets. If you're unable to get them in that time, you will lose a life. Each time you lose a life, your time gets reset back to 99.

Okay, now I will go over each level in detail and try to guide you as best as I can.

LEVEL ONE
In this level, you need to rescue 4 petpets to advance to the next level. It's very important that you get ALL the gems in this level.

See the stalagmites (stalactites? Whatever they're called!) at the top? Whenever one starts wiggling, it means it will soon fall off. When it does, make sure to dodge it! First off, rescue three of the petpets. This will bring your score up to 30. Then go up and get the gems. There may be anywhere from 2-4 pink gems in Level One. They will be in the area of the boulders (See my guide for Navigating the Boulders at the bottom of the page). You have to get all of them. Then your score will be from 40-50. Grab one last petpet and take it to the exit. Now your score will be from 50-60. You get a 25-point bonus for completing the level, so your score at the beginning of Level Two will be from 75-85.

IMPORTANT!: If you lose a life in Level One, START OVER! You need your lives for levels 2 and 3.

LEVEL TWO
In this level, you need to rescue 6 petpets to advance to the next level.

In this level, instead of starting out in front of the lava, you start off in front of the boulders. In the boulder area there may be some gems, there may not. Blue gems are introduced in Level 2, and some pink gems may be present as well. Blue gems are worth 10 points each. While you don't have to get every single gem in the entire level, I highly recommend that you try to get a gem if you see one. The level order is as follows: First you see some boulders, then lava and carts. Then comes another set of boulders (and in this one there is always at least one gem that I recommend you to get). Then comes a last set of lava and carts.

It's hard to get 6 petpets in 99 seconds, PLUS all the gems. So for this, you WILL lose a life. I suggest you try to rescue at least 3 petpets and get all gems before losing a life. Then get the remaining petpets.

It is possible to lose more than one life in Level Two. I would usually start over, but if you have a feeling you're going good then continue.

At the end of this level, you should have about 160 points. With your 25-point bonus, you should start Level Three out with about 195 points.

LEVEL THREE
In this level, you must rescue 8 petpets in order to advance to the next level. However, you will probably reach the avatar score before completing the level.

If you're anything like me, you'll come to hate this level. The boulders move very quickly, and there's never a gap in them. The icicles fall fast and furious, and you have to get through so many carts in the lava before you reach the next set of boulders. In this level, the green gems, worth 15 points, are introduced. You also still have your blue and pink gems. My suggestion to you is to rescue 3 or 4 petpets, and then try to get gems that will boost your score up to 250. It's good to have several lives at the start of this level, so you have multiple shots at getting the av if you mess up. The good news is, you don't have to complete the level. You only need to get up to 250.

Also, I got a tip submitted from a user. You might want to get many gems that you see FIRST and try to get up to 220 or 230, and then try to get 2-3 petpets so your score is 250. I forget who submitted that tip, so if you're reading this and you know who you are, PLEASE neomail me on Zylp so I can give you credit!

In this level, it's important to know how to navigate boulders. That's why I wrote a separate guide below.

GUIDE FOR NAVIGATING BOULDERS

Navigating boulders is an imperative part of the game. At the beginning, it may be easy for there to be one big gap for you to run through. But in Levels 2 and 3, it will get harder and harder to dodge them, and you will waste precious time if you try and wait for a big gap. So I will give you a strategy that saves time. You may have to practice this strategy for a while, but once you get the hang of it, it will make getting the avatar ten times easier.

The first thing you have to notice is that the boulders aren't just a random mass of rolling things. Each boulder runs in a horizontal line. There are patterns. Each line moves a certain way.

The image above is a sample of a set of boulders. I've drawn arrows to show which way each line goes. When you reach a set of boulders, you have to study which way each line goes. Then you go into the first line. Go with the flow! Follow the boulders in the direction you're moving. For example, in the picture above, suppose you were entering the first line. That line moves left. If there's two boulders that are close to each other rolling by, wait until the second one passes, then move up and follow them. When you have a chance to go to the second line, do so. Then follow the second line in whichever direction that line goes. In this example, you'd go right. Then, for the third line, wait until that set of four boulders passes, move up, follow them until you can move up. Voila! You've learned how to navigate a set of boulders.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Criticism? Praise? Neomail it all to my main account, Zylp. If this guide helped you, I'd love to know about it. Remember! You probably won't get the avatar right on your first try. Practice. Practice. Practice some more.
