Here's some info and vocabulary you'll need to know to play the market. Where is the stock market?
The main stockmarket page is listed under "Board games" in the game room. It is also linked to a small ticker symbol under the big banner on Neopet's front page. However, the clickable address below leads to a page where the stocks are listed in ascending order of price. So it becomes really easy to find good stocks to buy. http://www.neopets.com/stockmarket.phtml?type=list&bargain=true Stock: A company that you can invest in. Powlex Corporation (POWL), Super Splime Shakes (SSS) and Nakron (NAKR) are stocks. Honestly, the names are not that important. They also have abbreviations that you can use so that you don't need to type out the whole name. Share: The parts of a stock that you buy. Neopets only allows investors to buy 1000 shares a day. For a food analogy: a stock is a type of pie, and a share is a slice of that pie. My stock went down! I lost money! Actually the only times that neopoints are made or lost is when you buy and sell. You can buy 1000 shares at 15np each and spend 15000np. Then the stock can go down to 6np each and you haven't lost anything. (Unless you sell.) The stock can then go up to 30np a share and you still haven't made any money (unless you sell the stock). The only prices that matter are the buying and selling price. If you follow two steps you will make money. 1. Buy low. Sell high. Buy stocks at 15-17np a share. Don't buy stocks that are priced higher. Unfortunately, Neopets doesn't allow anyone to buy stocks priced lower than 15np a share. Never, never, never sell at a loss! 2. Diversify Each day buy a different stock that is selling between 15 and 17np a share. (Buy shares in the stock that you own the least of.) This way you have a greater chance that something will go up soon.

If you already know how to buy and sell shares, then jump to some useful tips. This is the page you see when you first enter the stock market: The choices at the top of the page are on every page in the market. Home leads back to the page you are on. Now it's time to find and buy your first stock. Click on "Find Stocks" and click on the red "here" button to get a complete list of stocks. This is a short selection of stocks that come up when you ask for a complete list. The only important things on this page are the current price "Curr" and the ticker symbol "Ticker". In this example, the only stock currently within buying price range (15-17np) is AAVL. If you click on it's ticker symbol you'll go to the profile page for that stock. You'll get some made up information about the stock (which can be funny but really isn't important). Clicking on the company's name again leads you to the buy page. Type in the number of shares you want to buy (in this case, I typed in 1000) and click the aptly named "Buy shares" button. Congratulations! You've just bought your first stock. Now go to the "my portfolio" button on the top of the screen. The portfolio page looks like this: Clicking on the grey arrow to the upper left of the stock picture lists each time you bought stocks and what price you bought them. In this example, I bought a total of 3000 shares of BUZZ in three 1000 share intervals. Two times I bought BUZZ at 15np a share and once I bought it at 16np a share. The icon and ticker help identify the stock. Selling shares is really easy. Click on the gray arrow next to your stock's picture. There will be an area marked Sell. Simply pick out all of the stocks that you want to sell and type in the number of shares you want to sell. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click "sell shares". Congratulations! If you were smart, you just gained some well earned cash. Background information, Investing basics, Useful tips, Fun details, Thank you section |
Now it gets interesting. The Easiest Method For Getting Rich Every day go to the stock market and buy 1000 shares of one stock that costs 15-17np a share. Yes that means you'll spend 15000 - 17000 neopoints a day. You can earn this money quickly by playing games every day. Buying 1000 shares is best; but if that is too much money, try to buy as many shares as you can afford each day. Don't buy less than 500 shares daily because the returns are too small. It's better to buy 1000 shares of one stock each day than to split up the money. The next day, buy a different stock that is selling between 15-17np a share. It's better to buy shares in the stock that you own the least of (even if it's more expensive) than have a whole lot of only a few stocks. This will diversify your portfolio and increase the likelihood that something you own will increase in value quickly. Buying stocks every day that you play Neopets is the best way to increase your money. Sell stocks as they reach your sell point (about 100% profit at first) and use the profits to buy more stocks. Then as you earn more and more money, raise your sell price. For a while, the market will be a money sink: you'll put a lot of money into the market with little to show for it. However, be patient. The market eventually pays for itself and later makes nice profits. A Profitable Trick: Split Selling Prices This technique is for people who are comfortable with the market. An alternative money making method is to sell some of your stock shares at one price and keep the other half hoping the stock will go higher. For example, if you buy at 15np and sell half your shares at 30np you've made up the cost of buying the stock. Everything else is profit and can be sold wholesale or in parts at a higher price (45, 60...) without risk of losing the original investment. You can create several sell points for your remaining money. This method requires paying more attention to the market and is riskier (since the stock can easily fall below your original sell price) but can make a lot of money. Risky Techniques There are other techniques for playing the market. Many involve focusing on hoarding a few stocks and waiting for them to go up. The idea is that selling a huge amount of shares produces a lot of money at one time. However, it can take years before a single stock reaches a good selling price. Buying many different stocks increases the speed of seeing a profit. Other techniques involve what is called Day-trading: buying stocks when they are expensive and selling them quickly. Expensive stocks can show significant variation in price over the course of a day. So a lucky day-trader can make a lot of money quickly. However, buying high means the stock can easily drop below the purchase price and stay low. An unlucky day-trader will never recoup the money they spent buying the stock. In the real stockmarket, stocks change value based on how many shares of stock people buy. (So the more people buy a stock, the more expensive it will be.) However, in Neopets, stock prices change randomly and the number of people who buy a stock has no impact on it's price. The market updates every 30 minutes: at X:28 and X:58. All stocks update, but not all stocks will change price. The trading "day" starts at 12 midnight NST. Your stockbroker makes a 20np commission whenever you sell a stock. Ignore his advice. He always says to buy stocks no matter how badly they are doing (because it's impossible to sell stocks if you don't buy them first). A stock's lowest value is 6np. Stocks used to go bankrupt and were worth nothing. However, no stocks have gone bankrupt for over 4 years (since Neopets changed ownership) and there is a widespread rumor that TNT doesn't allow stocks to go bankrupt anymore. (Since bankruptcy makes a lot of people angry, it cuts down on Neopet page views and may cause some devoted players to quit if they lost a lot of money.) But even without the risk of bankruptcy, it is best to diversify. The Yurble and Kau on this page are a nod to the real stockmarket. Bulls symbolize rising stocks and bears symbolize dropping stock prices. I went with the closest related Neopean pets. If you want more advice, try chatting on the Stockmarket Chat board. There are a lot of people there who know a lot about the market and can answer questions. Also be sure to look at the FAQ that Neopets created to explain the stockmarket. It's very useful. Lastly, I've said this a lot but I'll repeat it again: Be patient and never sell at a loss. Good luck! Neomail me (y0wl) if you have questions or want to add details to this page!
