Please note that if your pet has a colour that causes it to have a quite different body form (e.g. maraquan, baby, mutant, fruit) it cannot wear clothes that the rest of the species can wear. Also pets that are not converted cannot use any clothes. Read the Conversion section for more information. |

On the 27th of April 2007 Neopets got a new site layout and the pets were redrawn. In a species of neopets most of the different colours have now the same "body cast", so that they can all wear the same clothes. (For more information about conversion, customisation and the new clothes read this editorial of the Neopian Times.) The owner of some pets have now the choice whether they want to convert their pets to the new design or not.See Neopets help. Mainly grey, darigan,, plushie and some baby and royal pets offer that choice. This means that some people in Neopia still have pets with the old design as long as they don´t choose to convert them. All other pets were converted automatically to the new design.
To see if one or more of your pets offer the choice to be converted go to the Quick ref page by clicking on the neopet in your sidebar on the left side as shown on the picture.
As you see, I have the choice to convert my darigan kyrii.Clicking on the yellow button does not convert your pet automatically to the new design, but only takes you to a page where you can see how it will look like if you convert it. But if you click on the grey button "Convert my Neopet!" your neopet will be converted forever and cannot be changed back! Only neopets that were painted before the new design came out have the option to be converted. I painted my kyrii royal one day after the new design came out and I couldn´t choose, but it had the new design automatically! If you are interested in comparing the new and old designs have a look at this petpage that alycia5190 created. It takes some time to load, but it´s very interesting. Pets that are not converted to the new design cannot be totally customised. That means that they cannot wear any of the new clothes, but they can have the new backgrounds. If you convert a pets that has a colour that will give it paint brush items, you will of course have that items on your pet. Example: if you convert a royal shoyru to the new design, it will be wearing all the royal shoyru clothes and you can use them in your customise inventory. If you put a non-converted pet into the pound, the pet it will NOT be converted automatically. |

To customise means to give your pets clothes or to take them off or to add backgrounds. They may be more things to come in the future There are three different kind of clothes that are important for the customising feature: New Clothes, Paint Brush Clothes and Species Clothes. None of the old clothes (from before the new layout) will work for the customise feature if TNT doesn´t make them to work. For more information about this read editorial #289 of the Neopian Times. The New Clothes are moved from your inventory to the inventory of the customising feature by using the closet option, which you can find on your Quick Stock Page and here or by clicking on the item and choosing it from the drop down menu. To use an item of the New Clothes to customise your pet, you have to put it into the closet first.
Clothes that can be worn are tagged "wearable" in your inventory (but not in the shops!!) as you can see in the picture.
Be aware that some of New Clothes and all of the Paint Brush Clothes can only be worn by certain species. A Mystery Island Kacheek Flower Clip can only be worn by Kacheeks as the name implies. The List of New Clothes shows wich New Clothes can be worn by which species. Please note that if your pet has a colour that causes it to have a quite different body form (e.g. maraquan, baby, mutant) it cannot wear clothes that the rest of the species can wear. Also pets that are not converted cannot use any clothes. Read the Conversion section for more information. But the clothes don´t seem to be fixed to a certain gender: My female island kyrii can wear the clothes of my royal boy kyrii. So the clothes are only usable for one certain species, but for both genders. I will describe how customising works using Paint Brush Clothes as I don´t have any pets with Species Clothes and the New Clothes didn´t work at the time I made this guide. But that doesn´t matter as Customisation works the same way for all the kinds of clothes.
After putting your New Clothes into the closet do the following:
To customise your pets you have to go to the Quick ref page by clicking on the neopet in your sidebar on the left side as shown on the picture.
As you see there is a "Customise!" button under the picture of each pet. Clicking that button cannot harm your pet in any way! It will only take you to the customisation menu. You can see a partitial picture of the menu below: It has some buttons at the top and a a big picture of you pet on the left side, where you can see how it looks like. Below the picture of your pet you can see information regarding the items that is chosen at that moment (in my picture no item is chosen and you only see a blank square). On the right side you can see the items on this account that this pet could wear. Even the items that are worn by other pets at the moment! Items that are meant for a different species of pet won´t show up - you can only see the items that this pet really could wear.
To dress your pet you choose an item that is in the inventory of the customise menu and click on it with the a left click. Keep that mouse button pressed and drag the item over the picture of your pet and then let go of the mouse button to apply it (drag&drop).
See? Now my pink kyrii is wearing the Mystery Island Kyrii Nose bone. So, it´s quite easy to dress the pet. The only thing that you have to keep in mind is that you cannot wear items at the same time that have to be applied at the same part of the body.
Example: My kyrii couldn´t wear the Mystery Island Kyrii Bracelets and the Royal Boy Kyrii Gloves at the same time, because they are both in the "glove zone". There are also bigger items that affect more than one zone at a time.
So, if I now wanted to save that change to my kyrii I would press the "Save Changes!" button.
Then this message pops up.That is because my other kyrii, Kyriiapple, is still wearing that nose bone! An item cannot be worn by two pets at the same time. And if you apply an item to one pet, it is not automatically removed from the other pet. So, if I wanted to have that nose bone on my pink kyrii, I have to go to customise Kyriiapple, remove the nosebone from her, save, then go to customise Oreanos (the pink kyrii), apply the nose bone to him and save. Tadah! Nose bone on pink kyrii! The last thing you have to learn now, is how to remove an item from a pet. ![]() To do that you have to choose "Applied" instead of "Inventory" at the top of the screen. Then all the items applied to the pet will be shown (in my case only the nose bone).
Then you click on the nose bone (see how it has this blueish background when it is selected) and the data of the nose bone will appear below the image of your pet. There will also be a "Remove" button. Clicking that button will take the item off the pet and put it back into the inventory. Don´t forget to save. To move items into your normal inventory again, remove them from your pet, save and go to your closet and choose "move selected items". It works just like your safety deposit box and there is a link to it in your inventory.
Those are the basics of customising your pet. When more clothes are released and start to work, there will be more things to change, I guess. |

These clothes can be bought and traded as they are regular items. Most of these clothes restock at the Clothing Shop, but the Sinister Clothes restock in Neovia. This kind of clothes is the main reason for the new design of the pets as I understand it. Some of these clothes can only be worn be one certain species, the Sinister Clothes can only be worn be Krawks for example, others, like the hats that came out on Hat Day can be worn by various species. Most of these clothes have already restocked, and they can be used since May 17th. (yay!) For a complete list of the New Clothes look here. These clothes are tagged "wearable" as you can see in the picture below and the can be moved into the inventory of the customising menu using the "Closet" as TNT stated here. The Closet option can be seen on the Quick Stock Page and here. For more information read the Customisation section.
If you want to see some pets dressed up in the new clothes, have a look at this petpage that confiserie created. Concerning the old clothes, that were already released for years, TNT said the following in the Neopian Times: At the moment, clothing options aren't retroactive. We're working on wearables to fit Neopets going forward, but only time will tell if we can take previously released clothes and add them to the customisation pile (or if we even want to... have you seen some of the older clothes items? *shudder*). Please keep in mind that, if we release an item that all species can wear, it will have to be drawn 54 times by our poor artists, so it will take a while. :) For more information about customisation and the new clothes read this editorial of the Neopian Times. Please note that if your pet has a colour that causes it to have a quite different body form (e.g. maraquan, baby, mutant) it cannot wear clothes that the rest of the species can wear. Also pets that are not converted cannot use any clothes. Read the Conversion section for more information.

Clothing items that you receive from paint brushes which "dress" your pets (pirate, royal, christmas, island, halloween, desert) can even be given to another pet of the same species on the same account. But they cannot be sold or traded. This means that now these paint brushes change the colour of your pet and additionally give you items to dress it. For an example have a look at Kyriiapple, who is wearing the crown of a royal kyrii on the same account. You might notice that her nosebone is gone. That´s because Oreanos is wearing it. This also shows that the items can be worn by both genders: My FEMALE island kyrii can wear the crown of the royal BOY kyrii (and has a beard now XD). You can find a list of Paint Brush Clothes here (created by hoeiva), but it´s not complete yet. Please note that if your pet has a colour that causes it to have a quite different body form (e.g. maraquan, baby, mutant) it cannot wear clothes that the rest of the species can wear. Also pets that are not converted cannot use any clothes, not even Paint Brush Clothes.
Please also note that those items are tied to the species: A kyrii nose bone cannot be used by a lupe. If you zap or repaint a pet that has Paint Brush Clothes equipped, the clothes are not lost. Example: If you have a christmas lupe and paint it glowing, you will find the christmas coat in the inventory of the customisation menu. If you want to see some possibilities of what you can do with Paint Brush Clothes, have a look at this petpage that confiserie created. She lists some great examples under "Notable Fashions".
![]() Robot, although being a lab ray colour, also gives your pet a new colour and clothes. You can see the robot hissi with its "outer hull" on the left side and you can see it without anything attached on the right side.
If you use a Mysterious Swirly Potion on your pet, all the clothes will disappear if you don´t put them into your inventory first. Example: The eyepatch is taken off a pirate chomby, he still wears all other pirate clothes. A Mystrious Swirly Potion is used on him and he changes into a pirate cybunny. The pirate cybunny wears all the clothes a pirate cybunny should wear and in the closet is still the eyepatch of the pirate chomby. All pirate chomby clothes that the chomby was actually wearing are gone.
One colour that had clothes before, lost them with the new design: Most of the baby pets are missing their diapers and soothers. It seems as if TNT is working on adding those items now.
It is also still unknown what will happen to the clothes in the future when you pound a pet. The pound is currently down for maintenance, but before that a few pets with clothes were pounded and kept their clothes in the pound, so it was possible to adopt a pet WITH clothes. But this seems to have changed while the pound is down. A desert hissi that was pounded today (7th of May) lost all his clothes and is now in the pound WITHOUT them. I will update if this changes again, but for now I believe that pets leave their paint brush clothes behind in the closet when pounded. I received information proving this theorie: A robot cybunny was pounded and the robot casing stayed in the customsation inventory! If you have more information concerning this, please contact me. |

Some species always wear items, for example the aishas have their collars and the bruces have their bowties. You don´t need a paint brush to get those nor do you have to buy them. They come with the pet. These items can be used like paint brush clothes. You can put them on and off and give them to another pet of the same species on the same account. But they cannot be sold or traded. Also, as with the paint brush clothes, these items don´t disappear when you repaint your pet. But please be aware, that you cannot see the item in you customisation inventory if you don´t have a pet of that species on your account. If you have a red aisha as your only pet on your account for example and your take its collar off and then morph it into a green uni, you won´t see the aisha collar in the customisation inventory if you try to customise your uni. But you can still find the collar in your closet. |

Backgrounds are pictures that you can put behind your pet so they can be seen on your user lookup and on the pet lookup. ALL pets, even mutant, maraquan, baby and fruit pets can use backgrounds! There are two kinds of backgrounds so far: the starry backgrounds and the Altador Cup Team Backgrounds. More backgrounds might be released in the future as more had been available during the beta test. Concerning the starry backgrounds, every user should have four starry backgrounds in the basic colours (yellow, red, blue and green) in their closet. They cannot be sold or traded. Strangely not all users have those. The reasons for this are still unknown, it may be a bug. When signing up for the Altador Cup '07 received one background with a flag of your team. This kind of background can be sold and traded. Backgrounds are used in the customisation menu just like clothes. For more information about how to customise, read this section.

Foreground items are items that sit next to your pet or hang above them or something like that. They all have in common that they are not attached to your pet. They can be seen on your user lookup and on the pet lookup. The good thing about foreground items is, that like backgrounds, they can be used by ALL pets, even by mutant, maraquan, baby and fruit pets and by unconverted pets, too! They restock at different shops and can be sold and traded just like new clothes items. Foreground items are also used in the customisation menu just like clothes. For more information about how to customise, read this section.
