Story

RP

A receiver will be waiting for you by the Underworld's entrance. Good luck.
Amphilogia rolled her eyes before crumbling up the note and tossing it over her shoulder. Hermes had a way of over preparing his messengers for even the simplest of tasks. This was, after all, a simple message delivery; it just happened to be in a very dangerous place. Am had no qualms that she wouldn't be able to protect herself, and thus carried on her way. Money was money, after all and the pay for going so close to the Underworld and back would be good, or so Hermes had promised.

Like most poverty-stricken individuals Am had accepted any job that had come strolling her way. It just so happened to be with the courier business: physically strenuous work that didn't pay very well. Am wasn't so bad at what she did, though, and as such had earned her fair share of promotions along with a healthy body and slender form.

Upon first glance many wouldn't automatically assume Am had come from the slums. In fact, she hadn't, but she had been raised there. She was tall and lightly tanned, with a curvy, nicely proportioned shape. Her dark brown hair was wavy, and reached the small of her back. Her eyes were dark brown, but were hardly the first thing one noticed upon looking at her face. Am had a very natural type of beauty, and was sure she flaunted it as often as she could.

The heavens were calm today. The sky was dotted with row upon row of what looked like soft, fluffy storm clouds. The sky itself was a pale bluish-gray. Mount Olympus rose in the very far distance, the peak of the mountain hidden behind a swirl of white clouds.

Am continued on her trek down toward the Underworld's entrance. Progressively the greenery around her became darker and thinner before disappearing completely, replaced by bleak gray and black rocks. High cliffs began to tower over her, and the sky was blotted out completely by darker, more threatening clouds.

The entrance to the Underworld was a clearing surrounded on all sides by incredibly high, dark cliffs. A pool of oddly colored water sat in the very center, still and from the looks not very deep. Am didn't want to test it's depth, just for the sake of her feet. Would be a good excuse to get out of work for a while, though.. She thought, folding her arms across her chest. The letter hung precariously from her long fingers, a bit carelessly on her part. The clearing also happened to be void of the "receiver" Am had been told would be there on the hour. Am waited for what seemed like ages. Patience had never been her strong point.

She glanced over to the gapping cave entrance, which undoubtedly led to the Underworld itself. It was a pitch black hole in the rock face, nothing fancy, nothing too spooky. Amphilogia, working for the gods' courier business, heard her fair share of dirty secrets about the Underworld and it's resident lord, Hades. Most of the rumors made Hades out to be a horrible, unfair ruler. There wasn't a thread of decency in Zeus' brother; no, not a single one. Am thought all that hard to believe; even she knew when to quit teasing a particularly blatant suitor, or when to stop giving Hermes asinine excuses, and she considered herself to be pretty bad. I wasn't banished to live in a cave for the rest of my life and work with dead bodies, though.

Temptation eventually outweighed common sense, and Am approached the cave entrance. Taking a deep breath, she walked briskly into the dark Underworld. Despite what Am had been expecting, the cave wasn't pitch black. Pools of the same oddly colored water were in abundance, and offered very faint light. There were so many of them that the cave had sufficient lighting. Green hued lighting, but lighting all the same. The cave walls seemed endless. They went on and on, higher and higher, until the light couldn't reach and Am could see no further. The same was true of the cave walls below her; a deep ravine cut through the cave's floor on her left and further away on her right. Streams and trickles of the green water ran down the ravine's wall, but the farther away they got the fainter their light became, and Am could see no further down either. The ground beneath Am's feet began to shake, rising in intensity steadily. She looked around frantically as rocks began to break away from the walls, then boulders. Just as she turned on her heel to leave, she slammed into something warm and very hard.

Course black fur filled her vision and a disgusting wet-dog smell filled her nostrils. Am didn't have time to scream before what she assumed to be teeth closed around her leg and tore her feet from the ground. Arms flailing madly, Am tried to find something to grab onto. She felt a warm, sticky substance running down her leg, which she assumed to be the saliva of whatever it was that had her in it's maw. She felt prickly pain as the teeth of the massive creature scrabbled at her flesh and felt her flesh tearing. The weight of her body pulled her closer to the ground, while the beast had locked onto her foot. I'm going to lose my foot… I'm going to lose my foot… just let me fall already! Just as the beast was about to rip Am's foot from her body, another set of teeth closed in around her torso, saving her from her downwards spiral, and keeping her torn leg on her body by what could only have been just a little bit of skin. Warm saliva gushed around her torso as the teeth of the beast burrowed deeper and deeper into her skin, slow and painful. Sharp pangs of intense pain shot through her body as another hot wetness began seeping through her toga. This time Am knew it wasn't saliva. She wanted to scream so badly, for the pain was unbearable, but her throat was tight. Her vision began to blur and dark spots began flashing across her line of sight. Am helplessly and hopelessly tried pushing against the creature's muzzle, which did little to nothing. "Cerberus!" came a voice from her left. Blackness suddenly swept over her consciousness.

Am's eyes fluttered open. The first thing she noticed was the lack of feeling in her body. Save for the ground against her cheek, Am had no idea what condition her body was in, or even what position she was currently in. Images flooded her mind and she recalled the fight with the horrific beast. It had torn her leg off, and had punctured her torso clean through. A pair of boots appeared before her, rather suddenly. She didn't have the power to crane her neck to see who the boots belonged to. Luckily, the stranger seemed to realize this. He bent down, his face still not visible to Am's limited line of vision, and placed a piece of paper on the ground next to her head. A black feather floated above the parchment; a pen. "Do you want to live?" He asked. Am realized vaguely that his voice was the one who had shouted something during the fight. What a strange question to ask… Of course I want to live! "You don't have much time. Decide for yourself. If you wish to live, sign the paper. Don't take too long in your decision: your life's ticking away as I speak. Cerberus did quite the number on you…" he chuckled, almost sadly. "Keep in mind death might be the better option." And then his boots were gone, as quickly as they had come. Am sat up slowly; it was awkward not having feeling in your body. She looked down, and just about fainted as she saw her blood… everywhere. The entire front of her white toga was stained a dark maroon and she saw lumps, which were undoubtedly blood clots. Feeling came back to her hands suddenly, and Am pressed them gently to the middle of her torso, right where her belly button should have been. She felt nothing. Am pressed more urgently; a gaping hole was in the place of where most of her stomach should have been. Am gagged. She looked down at her leg, only to see that it too was coated in layers of her own blood and was hanging on by only a few strands of sinew. Feeling was quickly returning to the rest of her body, and Am feared the pain it would bring. She grabbed blindly for the pen that floated beside the parchment, as her eyes scanned the sheet briefly, searching for the line. She scribbled her name sloppily, the pain of the hole in her stomach becoming very apparent. The moment she dropped the pen, Amphilogia lost her consciousness for the second time in only one day.
