An illuminating tale

Have you ever thought about the wonder of light?

Have you ever pondered how something like that can exist, where it comes from, how it is made? If you're willing to listen I'll tell you a little secret: it's not just made from something; it is something. Light itself is alive, made up of infinitely small creatures that, when gathered together in a large enough group, can be seen by our eyes. And wherever you have a large population of some kind, you need someone to guide them. That is Niralu's role. She is a guider of light. A source of order for them, if you will. She isn't able to directly manipulate their every movements like a puppeteer, but assists them to find rest and direction in their journey of life as they drift along in the world.

Like a moth to a flame, these light organisms feed on energy produced at certain wavelengths from chemical or physical reactions. If enough energy is present they can gather in groups large enough for us to see, and the more food produced, the brighter the light. For example, when a light bulb has energy applied through it, the light particles instantly zip over to eat. These creatures are infinitely tiny and moderately vulnerable, and if they have been too long without nourishment or get lost Niralu is there to shepherd them. Her wings resonate at the same frequency as them, so they can rest on her when they're not traveling.

But you may remember that shepherds have another duty: that of a protector. Such tiny organisms are not without a predator unfortunately. Hiding in the shadows, these dark creatures lack any skeletal structure and resemble a small pile of tar; they are known to us as blackbody. Few know of their existence, and even fewer wish to speak of them. They descend from creatures capable of powers similar to black holes, and they absorb all stray light they can get their hands on. They need to be cautious in their hunt though. If an inexperienced one absorbs too much light too quickly, they begin to heat up and glow, and the predator becomes the prey. Some particles of light are able to escape back out into the world. They have, however, become tainted- similar to how things around us can become radioactive and toxic. Niralu is one of the few beings capable of reversing the ill effects and returning them back to normal.

It's believed that there are others like Niralu, though no one is sure. She is always on the move, traveling the world and silently guiding the light.
