Here's what you need to do to create control rods:

1) Go here: http://www.neopets.com/space/ros/tokens.phtml?activity=mg

You'll see the following picture:

Of course, you numbers will be different.

2) Now you need to calculate the mass of every compound in each piece.

Example of the first piece in the picture:

Mass: 3.1 kg
Composition:
- 35.5% Kadoatite
- 32.3% Xweetite
- 32.3% Dariganium

Calculating:
3.1*0.355=1.1005=1.1 (you need to round to the nearest)
3.1*0.323=1.0013=1
3.1*0.323=1.0013=1

Do this for all ten pieces. Yes, it's lots of work, but we haven't found an easier way yet.

Results for my picture (I'll shorten the names of the metals up to first 3 letters):
Piece 1: 1.1 Kad, 1 Xwe, 1 Dar
Piece 2: 1.8 Zaf, 2 Neo, 0.4 Xwe
Piece 3: 0.5 Mer, 1 Neo, 1.9 Fae
Piece 4: 0.8 Mer, 0.7 Kad, 0.6 Neo
Piece 5: 1 Xwe, 2 Dar, 1 Neo
Piece 6: 1.8 Kad, 0.4 Tyr, 2 Slo
Piece 7: 1.4 Slo, 1.9 Xwe, 2 Fae
Piece 8: 0.1 Xwe, 0.3 Neo, 1.4 Fae
Piece 9: 1.1 Xwe, 0.3 Dar, 1.5 Neo
Piece 10: 0.9 Neo, 1.1 Tik, 0.4 Zaf

3-1) Now group your data for each metal, like this:
Meridellium: 0.5, 0.8
Faeryllium: 1.9, 2, 1.4
Xweetite: 1, 0.4, 1, 1.9, 0.1, 1.1
Zafarium: 1.8, 0.4
Neopium: 2, 1, 0.6, 1, 0.3, 1.5, 0.9
Dariganium: 1, 2, 0.3
Slothite: 2, 1.4
Tikium: 1.1
Tyrannium: 0.4
Kadoatite: 1.1, 0.7, 1.8

3-2) Then, look at the following numbers:
Meridellium: 0.7
Faeryllium: 5.3
Xweetite: 1.9
Zafarium: 1.8
Neopium: 4.4
Dariganium: 5
Slothite: 1.1
Tikium: 2.5
Tyrannium: 3.6
Kadoatite: 3.3

And your task is to find one or more numbers from step 3-1 that add up to the corresponding number in step 3-2. Do it like this:
Meridellium: 0.5 and 0.8 can't add up to 0.7 - not what I need
Xweetite: there's one "1.9" which suits me
Zafarium: there's one "1.8" which suits me
Slothite: 2 and 1.4 can't add up to 1.1 - not what I need
Kadoatite: 1.1, 0.7 and 1.8 can't add up to 3.3 - not what I need

You need to do this for all 10 metals, though it's not possible right now because we don't have the numbers for all 10 metals. But if you find numbers that suit you, go on.

4) Find the required pieces. In my example, I figured out that I can take either the piece with 1.9 Xweetite (that's piece 7) or the piece with 1.8 Zafaruim (that's piece 2). Choose any of them. If you have a sum of pieces, make sure their total mass is not more than 10 kg.

5) Press "Melt" and wait 180 seconds. If you're successful, you'll get the following message:

*BZZT* Congratulations! You have successfully created a nuclear reactor control rod, made from ***. This rod can now be added to the globally available pool of control rods used in testing Duplicate Space Faerie Tokens.

If so, congratulations! Now you may do something else, or repeat :)

Alternative method (thanks to metrostrikers02!):
After you get to the page with your picture, choose one metal, for example, Faerillium. Calculate the masses for it in the pieces where it is present, just like we did in the step 2 in the first method. Then see if any of them are equal to the required number (or can be added up to the required number) (step 3-2 in the first method). If you find a match, use it. If you don't, choose another metal and continue. That's basically the same method, but you don't need to calculate all 30 values, because you'll most probably find the match earlier.
