Welcome to my little guide on Neopets special days! I made this page since I see so many boards on the HC, on a special day, asking for information on what events can be expected for that day. I hope you find this guide to be useful and informative.
Basically, any day marked on the Neopets Calendar is a special day.
Take a look at the calendar for January (The Month of Sleeping). You can see the special days listed. If you look closely, you'll see that most of them are days dedicated to a particular Neopet species, although there are days dedicated to Neopets characters as well (Jhudora Day, Fyora Day) and real-world events (Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas).
What can I expect on a Special Day?
A Special Day usually results in new content being added to the site. Here are the things you can expect on a special day.
Free Training: This happens on pet days (Zafara Day, for example). On this day, if you have a Neopet of the species that the special day is dedicated to, you can give it free training at the Swashbuckling Academy.
Keep in mind, however, that Neopets releases the New Features a little before the actual day begins according to NST. So, you have to wait till the new day arrives according to NST, to give your pet the free training.
New Pet Colours: Usually, a Special Day results in new Pet Colours being released. For example, the 2008 Aisha Day resulted in a new colour for the Aisha, Sketch, being released. So if you've been wanting a particular colour for your pet, which is yet to be released, check the New Features on it's special day!
New Items: New items are always released on special days. Here are a few kinds you can expect. Keep in mind, though, that if you want to restock them from their respective Neopian Shops, you might have to wait a while before they actually start stocking.
Food: New food items (this includes all chocolate/bakery/any other edible items) themed on the particular pet, character or event, are released.
Wearables: With the new Customization feature, wearables are the new rage! Anything from clothes, accessories and backgrounds are released on special days. They are usually specific to the pet that the day is themed on, and if the day is themed on something else (a character, any event, etc) it is usually themed on that.
Furniture: These are also released on special days, and are themed on the pet/character/event.
Morphing Potions: New pet Morphing Potions are generally released on pet days! This is welcomed by many, as the price of an exotic coloured morphing potion is sometimes lower than the cost of the same Paint Brush. These restock in Kauvara's Magic Shop, but you have to be fast to snag one, or you can simply buy one from the Auction House, or Trading Post.
Toys: These include Usukis, and Plushies too. They stock in their respective shops.
Shopkeepers: Often, new Neopets Shopkeepers are released on special days. You can choose one to adorn your shop or gallery here.
Fun Images: These are images just for putting up on your lookup, petpage, shop, gallery, or whatever. New ones are released on special days, quite often. You can find them here.
Creative Contests, and Other Spotlights: Most creative contests and spotlights select winners with entries based on the particluar special day. Here is a list of the ones you can try entering if you want to!
Poetry Gallery: On a Special Day, the Poetry Gallery showcases a special set of poems. These are ones that are themed on that particular special day. You can find the Poetry Gallery here.
If you want to submit for a Special Day Poetry Gallery, make sure you submit on time! I usually do so 10 to 14 days before the update day - which is the day before the special day. If your poem is really good, I've heard you can get in by submitting at the last minute, but I can't guarantee that, so it's best you submit on time.

Art Gallery: Like the Poetry Gallery, the Art Gallery also showcases specially themed art on special days. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an artist, and want a shiny trophy, why not enter, and have the pleasure of having your art on display for the world to admire. You can find the Art Gallery here. You should ideally submit a week to two days before the update day, which is, again, one day before the special day.

Spotlights: I did notice that sometimes the Pet Spotlight, User Lookup Spotlight, Gallery Spotlight, etc select winners themed on certain special days, however since these are weekly contests, what special day will be considered is a bit of a problem. If anyone has more information on this, I'd appreciate it if you drop me a neomail!
Neopian Times: On certain Special Days, the Neopian Times has a special issue for the week. It has entries themed on the particular special day it is for. Entering such special issues can win you prizes (item prizes, that is.) Currently, the ones I know of are: Jhudora Day, Valentine's Day, Illusen Day, Easter, Fyora Day, Halloween and Christmas. Ideally, if you want to submit for these, around three weeks before the special day should be fine. You can find the Times here and the submission form here.
Caption Contests: Often, I've noticed that when new Caption Contests are released, if they take place on a Special Day, then they are usually themed on that day.
A Note About Wednesdays: Every Wednesday, Neopets has a random theme for the day. It could be absolutely anything, and is announced on the New Features page. Usually, some items, images, shopkeepers, etc are released, special galleries, lookups etc are picked for spotlights sometimes. Although not technically a Special Day, it sure has some perks!
