Now Playing - Eric Whitacre's Sleep. I have interpreted the lyrics to fit Lissia's story. My introduction "Sleep" is written using these lyrics.

Welcome to my page. I am Mehlissia, but I go by Lissia. I am a ghost Xweetok, who unfortunately is still here, despite attempting to leave this world. Make sure to read my story and see my artwork.

Sleep

The evening hangs beneath the moon
The slight rustle of leaves is all that trails in Sharakye's wake as he glides softly down the alley towards the dying girl.
A silver thread on darkened dune
The knife glistens in the din, and the deep river erupts from the girl's chest.
With closing eyes and resting head
She falls gracefully, like a marionette whose strings have been cut, onto the damp ground.
I know that sleep is coming soon
No turning back now, she thought, with mixed feelings of pride and peace.

Upon my pillow, safe in bed
Her pillow of leaves were saturated with blood.
A thousand pictures fill my head
The problems of her life flashed before her, swimming in the front of her memory.
I cannot sleep my minds a flight
The cheating boyfriend, the backstabbing sister, the abusive "friend", the baby in her belly.
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
She loses feeling in her extremities. Her toes, once cold, were now pleasantly warm.

If there are noises in the night
A dog barks in the distance. Sharakye is not swayed from his task, and approaches the girl whose life is slowly leaking out.
A frighting shadow, flickering light
In her mind's eye, a new figure appears. From the darkness, Sharakye emerges, a figure of stability and a symbol of the daunting task ahead.
Then I surrender unto sleep
Death is here, she realizes with the first twinge of fear.

Where clouds of dreams give second sight
Am I to be rescued? Is this creature a figure of light, or darkness?
What dreams may come both dark and deep
She thinks of the people and the life she's leaving behind. She regrets not being able to hug her mother and father one last time.
Of flying wings and soaring leap
It's time, she thinks. The creature emanates his assent.

As I surrender unto sleep
The girl's eyes close feebly, and in her weakened state she stirs silently, her body struggling to grasp the wisp of consciousness that remains.
As I surrender unto sleep
Brown eyes close forever, and maroon ones open for the first time. A silent shadow watches the soul exit the body and take in its surroundings. Another journey begins.

The end marks a beginning

The knife plunged into Lissia's chest, making her heart cry rivers of blood that poured out of her chest, a visual representation of the dam of emotions breaking inside her. Spots of light and darkness clouded her vision, creating a patchwork quilt of real images and imagined ones for Lissia to see in her final moments. Cringing at the thought of her parents weeping over her body in the days to come, she pushed the blade an inch deeper, willing the end to come sooner. Effervescent light dances in her view, creating an idyllic view of peace and tranquility. The patchwork blurs, with the blotches of light and dark swelling together to cover the alley scene before her. From the center of her vision emerges a creature – a mere shadow, wispy and thin and transient. The creature begins to take form, and as it solidifies, the background dims and is extinguished completely.

The shadow stands calmly and quietly yet firmly. Lissia, instead of ceasing to exist, recognizes that she has entered a new state of being. Horrified with what she has done, she turned to the creature.
,
What happened? Why am I still here?

The creature remains silent.

But…I should have died! I meant to die! Why am I not gone? I remember all my problems, all my struggles, and that's not what was supposed to happen! Lissia laments.

Ending your life in such a way does not relieve you of your problems.

What? So I'm supposed to sit here and watch as my family mourns? I have to sit and think about all my problems for eternity?

The creature offered no reply.

Come on. You can speak! Please, please explain what's going on….at least tell me your name? Why are you here?

There was a brief pause, in which Lissia thought she wouldn't get her answer.

I am Sharakye. I am a guardian of the dead, a bringer of souls. I am your Reaper, come to escort you into the next life.

Lissia waited.

So…there's a heaven and a hell after all?

No. That is mortal nonsense, meant to mollify those who are afraid of what happens once their body is extinguished. There is life, then there is death. Those souls that have correctly passed on cease to remember. They become a part of the Collective. You, however, did not pass on adequately. You complicated matters by taking your own life. Therefore, you are to remain on this planet, until your soul is at peace. Then and only then may you pass on into the Collective.

Lissia is quiet for a moment, contemplating what Sharakye has said.

So…basically, I have to…forgive myself?

Sharakye smiled wanly. Not so cliché, I'm afraid. You have to realize that your living problems are meaningless to the grand scheme of things, and come to terms with them. You must accept them as they are, rather than let them consume you as you have done as a mortal.

Well, that doesn't sound too bad, Lissia mused. How hard can it be?
