News

8th Feb: Hmm, two potential new annual events in the news today... Wraith Day and the return of the Faerie Quest Event. This is the first instance of Wraith Day and while it could turn into an annual celebration like Grey Day and Mutant Day it could also easily be a one-off. I have sent in a question to the Editorial in the hope of receiving an answer on the subject.

The Faerie Quest Event is another thing entirely: It happened last year, following Faerieland's fall to Neopia after the TFR plot, the concept being that they needed help in rebuilding Faerieland. Now one year later and that world is still looking cracked in places, so fair enough to repeat it, but it can't go on forever, can it? The reparations have got to be finished at some point. That said, this year little has been mentioned about this event being to help repair the place; the announcement in the news didn't mention it at all, but said that 'Daily Faerie Quests are back!', which makes me wonder if they do intend it to be annual event... Unless we're offered any more info I think I'd rather wait until the end of this year's event, to see if they declare Faerieland fully fixed or not, before predicting this to be annual (and writing an entry for it) or otherwise.

3rd Feb: As some of you might have noticed, the layout has reversed. Now the list of events is on the left while the information and navigation is on the right. This was suggested by someone on Wednesday's advertising topic on the HC - I hate to refer to them as 'someone' but I can't remember the username. Anyway, they thought it would be more intuitive to have the first thing one reads (the welcome message and then perhaps the list's entry titles) on the left of the screen, since a lot of people (most people?) read left-to-right. After some consideration I had to agree. [C:]

1st Feb: Hello, February! I have updated the month indicator in the Navigation and will be advertising TEC on the HC later, as is now my custom for the first of a new month - to list the coming events.

26th Jan: I have now added 'external link' icons, thanks to Esomera for helping figure out how to code them. [=D] While naturally no links are leading off Neopets, these icons will instead indicate when a link leads off The Expanded Calendar. (You can see rather a lot of them in the Sitely section, for example.) I've been thinking some type of indicator could be useful for a while now, since one could easily expect some of these 'external' links to lead to one of TEC's own entries when in fact they don't.

11th Jan: Ah, the Neopies is back for its fourth year. I have now looked over and edified its entry. [=3]

1st Jan 2012: Hello to 2012 and Year 14! Usually the new year coming along only requires me to change the year in the copyright notices on my sites, but with TEC there were a few more bits and pieces to remember to change: Alone with updating the navigation's month indicator, I have updated which dates such things as third Wednesdays and first and second Sundays fall on. And changed the year at the top of the page. And found out when NT Issue 550 is going to be. [=D] If I've missed anything, do please tell.

13th Dec: With the return of the Holiday Dream Neopet Giveaway it can now be considered an annual event so now has an entry. [C=]

2nd Dec: It looks like the Snowager is hibernating at the moment - a new occurrence. I'm told you can try to steal some treasure every few hours, and this looks likely to continue for the month, since it is linked to at the Winter Starlight Celebration page.

1st Dec: Navigation's month indicator moved to December. Also, you may have noticed TEC's images are back - this is because I finally gave up on the hosting site I was using and found new. Sorry I took so long about that. [n.n;]

22nd Nov: The Games Master Challenge is back! And ooh, it's different. [=O] This, to my delight, required a whole new paragraph to be added to the GMC's entry.

15th Nov: Happy Birthday, Neopets! Don't forget to check out Neo's birthday entry to see what the celebrations involve. There's also a free goodie bag available in the NC Mall, but I don't think it has happened before so I can't be confident it will happen again; hence it not being added to the entry. [n.n]

7th Nov: TEC is six months old today, having been launched on the 7th May. [=D]

6th Nov: Guddi6 has pointed out the lack of Neotitle information in the Account Age secton. Unfortunately my usual sources for info aren't all in accordance with each other on this topic, so I may have to do some data collecting of my own. [=)]

1st Nov: Added the end date for this year's Haunted Faire and have moved the navigation's month indicator.

31st Oct: Updated the Haunted Faire entry with info about Saskia's Masks of Dread. Happy Halloween, by the way.

18th Oct: Updated the entries for Poogle Day and Jetsam Day with this year's release numbers.

13th Oct: Since the Haunted Faire has returned for a second year I have now given it it's own entry separate from the Halloween entry. [=3]

8th Oct: Much to my disappointment, TNT have stated in the Editorial (NT Issue 515) that the Nox Memorial Day was a 'one-time event, not a recurring annual event'. [=(] Have now removed the entry.

5th Oct: New entry - Nox Memorial Day! Plus I have now removed the temporary entry about the free training for Peophin, Ruki, Blumaroo and Meerca pets, and this news section now scrolls like it ought to. [C:]

4th Oct: Advertised on the Help Chat yesterday. Now listed at Dragon's Lair.

1st Oct: It's now October, so the navigation's month indicator has been moved. [=)]

29th Sept: Listed at Epcot Directory.

28th Sept: A Small List has ranked TEC second in their 'Reference' category. [C=]

18th Sept: Updated some of the Limited Edition pet entries with newer info on how many have been released on their days.

7th Sept: Added an entry for the scheduled Free Training for Peophin, Ruki, Blumaroo and Meerca, even though this is not an annual event.

2nd Sept: Moved the month indicator to September.

27th Aug: Added TNT's editorial statement about this year's lack of Style Showdown to that event's entry.

22nd Aug: Listed at Affinity.

9th Aug: Ah... If you're wondering why there are stray Slorgs around the page, I'm afraid that's because they've escaped from their hatchery. Sorry about that! [n.n] Just keep an eye on the floor so you don't slip on the slime. Oh and if you want to help us recover them then please go ahead and report them to the Hub. Thanks!

1st Aug: Moved the indicator on the navigation to August.

Daylight Saving Time

Neopia observes daylight saving time (the practice of temporarily advancing clocks during the summertime so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less). Since Neopets' headquarters are located in California, Neopian Standard Time (NST) follows the same daylight saving time as Pacific Standard Time (PST).

  • Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March. Clocks are turned forward an hour at 02:00 am NST.
  • Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday of November. Clocks are turned backward an hour at 02:00 am NST.

Monthly Freebies For You

The Freebies For You page can be visited every month for 2,000 np and a cheap food item per Neopet. Its months go by the months of the year, as opposed to a month in time; e.g. you could collect your monthly freebies on Jan 31st and then again on Feb 1st.

3rd Day - Half-Price Day

Half-Price Day takes place twelve times a year, on the 3rd of the month. It was first introduced in Y3 (2001).

It is the day most Neopian shops set all their items at half-price, but there are a number of exceptions to this custom: user shops, the Hidden Tower, Almost Abandoned Attic, General Store, Neohome Superstore, Igloo Garage Sale, Smuggler's Cove, Little Nippers and NC Mall are all excluded.

3rd Wednesday - Hidden Tower Discount Day

As the third Wednesday of the month, today offers users whose accounts are 60+ months a 3% discount at the Hidden Tower.

Key Quest Seasonal Prizes

The prizes received through redeeming Key Quest keys are themed to suit the season, see below for approximate dates.

  • Feb-Mar: Chocolate / Valentine's
  • Apr-Aug: Spring / Easter
  • Aug-Sept: Summer
  • Oct-Nov: Halloween
  • Dec-Jan: Winter

Neopian Times Special Issues

The Neopian Times observes a number of Neopia's holidays. As long as enough related works are accepted then the issue falling on the Friday before or after the holiday will feature a specially themed layout. Writers and artists contributing to these issues may also receive an item prize alongside their trophy. The 50th issues are treated similarly.

  • 550th Issue: June 15th, 2012

Festival of Neggs

The notion of celebrating Neopia's neggs began in Y12 (2010) and was led by Kari, the Negg Faerie. The Festival may be considered to have superseded the Neggtacular Springtime Celebration (hosted by Rosie) of 2009.

In 2010 the festivities stretched from March 15th to April 12th. In 2011 they were from April 6th to May 5th.

The Festival has involved Neopians in a variety of negg-related activities, giving out many items and other awards.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue that coincides with Easter.

January - The Neopies

The Neopies is an annual awards ceremony during which Neopians can vote in various categories (such as Best New Paint Brush or Best New Game) to determine the highs and lows of the previous year and earn daily items or neopoints for the trouble. It was first held in Y11 (2009).

  • 2012: Jan 11th-30th
  • 2011: Jan 11th-[when?]
  • 2010: Jan 12th-[when?]
  • 2009: Jan 28th-[when?]

Jhudora is known for being a Dark Faerie of particular intelligence and for the series of quests she offers Neopians.

Her day is celebrated with a news post that usually introduces several new Jhudora-themed items and with text on the frontpage being coloured purple. Due to her troubled relationship with Illusen, somebody makes sure that it is impossible to do the Earth Faerie's quests on Jhudora Day. The 'Evil Jhudora' avatar can be obtained today by completing any one of Jhudora's quests.

The 'Valentine's Day' site theme can be obtained today by sending or receiving the item 'A Mysterious Valentines Card'. Both sender and recipient receive the theme. The item, having been used, disappears.

The 'Valentine Chia' avatar can be obtained today by sending a specific NeoGreeting to someone: Type 'I Love You' in the keyword search and find the greeting that features a puppyblew with a rose in its mouth. You can send to yourself.

As a Limited Edition pet, the Tonu is not constantly available for creation at Create-A-Pet. Limited Edition pets are usually released on their pet days, but the Tonu is an exception. Instead, they are available far more frequently - possibly whenever the Giant Omelette is gone [confirm?], which tends to happen at some point every day.

22nd Feb - Mynci Day

The Mynci (mwn-sea) has been around since Y0, though it was originally known as the Mellish. The name Mynci is derived from the Welsh 'mwnci', which itself means 'monkey'.

The 'Gadgadsbogen!' avatar can be obtained on March 4th by viewing the Neopedia entry Trickster Llugh and the Legend of Gadgadsbogen.

3rd Mar - Cancelled due to lack of interest

The first instance of March 3rd being cancelled was in 2004, when TNT explained that, since they were updating the times that daily content was released, the 3rd would essentially be cancelled. Following this they have continued to announce March 3rd's cancellation most years, citing 'a lack of interest' as a joke.

Nothing that should otherwise happen on March 3rd - such as Half-Price Day or your birthday - is in any way affected by this.

6th Mar - Gelert Day

The Scorchio (scorch-ee-oh) has been around since Y0.

As on all pet days, the celebrated species is treated to free training at The Swashbuckling Academy (under level 40 only) and will have a news post dedicated to them (sometimes a day late or early) usually introducing two new colour options and various related items.

17th Mar - Illusen Day

Illusen is an Earth Faerie known for her kind and gentle nature and for the series of quests she offers Neopians.

Her day is celebrated with a news post that usually introduces several new Illusen-themed items. Due to her troubled relationship with Jhudora, somebody makes sure that it is impossible to do the Dark Faerie's quests on Illusen Day. The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue in observance of this day.

22nd Mar - Chomby Day (a.k.a. Chomby Carnival)

The Chomby (chom-bee) was introduced the day Tyrannia was discovered, in Y3 (2001), and was released for creation the following day.

As a Limited Edition pet, the Lutari is not constantly available for creation at Create-A-Pet. After an initial release on their day in 2006, they (along with access to Lutari Island) then became exclusive to users of a now defunct mobile phone service. Since then they have been released on their days in 2009 and 2011. As an example of numbers, 14,000 of them became available during the 2011 release.

As a Limited Edition pet, the Koi is not constantly available for creation at Create-A-Pet. Limited Edition pets are usually released on their pet days and Koi are reliable in this respect. 17/20th Sept - Faerie Festival

The Faerie Festival is an annual event where the faeries of Neopia can let their hair down and have a good time. The event had only been celebrated with the Healing Springs faerie being particularly generous (healing all Neopets to full hit points and curing any illnesses) and with a Faerie-themed news post on the 20th of the month since Y6 (2004), but with the fifth festival in Y11 (2009) the celebrations took on a larger scale; from September 17th to October 1st users could participate by completing minor challenges for daily item prizes. The following year's festival appeared to be in the same vein until, three days in, all the Faeries and a pie were turned to stone and The Faeries' Ruin plot commenced.

19th Sept - International Talk Like A Pirate Day

International Talk Like A Pirate Day is a parodic holiday invented in 1995. It is regularly celebrated in Neopia. Although there is rarely mention of it in the news, it is hard to miss on the Neoboards due to the special filter TNT puts into effect for the day. The filter changes many common words into pirate versions, such as 'yes' to 'aye'. To add to the chaos, users posting on the Neoboards do not see the effect the 'pirate filter' has on their own posts; they only see everyone else suddenly speaking like sailors gone bad.

October - Haunted Faire

Some years a small Trick-Or-Treat hunt was held in October, in which users could find Trick-Or-Treat bags in certain spots around Neopia. In Y12 (2010) this idea was expanded upon with the Haunted Faire, a month-long event that introduced the Apple Bobbing daily (which is run by a Gnorbu named Bart). During the 2010 event, Apple Bobbing would (in addition to its usual good and bad prizes) offer users quests that, once completed, awarded various other items or the Lost Desert, Space Station, Mystery Isle, Moltara and Krawk Island Trick-or-Treat Bags.

The Haunted Faire 2011 featured a new method of dispensing the Trick-or-Treat bags: From the 25th users could participate in Masks of Dread, in which a Cybunny named Saskia gifted wearable masks and quests together. Completion of the quests awarded various items and, on the sixth and final quest, awarded the Sidney, Skarl, Gavril, Bonju and Saskia Trick-or-Treat Bags.

Hubrid Nox's memorial day was first celebrated in Y13, following the villain's demise during The Faeries' Ruin plot the year before (this incident can be seen in the TFR comic, on the second page of Chapter 5). The Memorial Day may have come about due to an Editorial question in Issue 474 of the Neopian Times (4th down).

The day includes a Nox- and TFR-themed news post, which in Y13 also introduced the Ghost colour for the Lutari. Also, a free Castle Nox Corridor of Chance Key 1-Pack became available from the NC Mall.

[NT Editorial Issue 515 stated that this would not be an annual event.]

Access is granted through a Random Event. Premium users may need to turn off Portal mode. You do not have to refresh in the Haunted Woods; anywhere on the site should work.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue in observance of this day.

November - Games Master Challenge

An annual event beginning in Y8 (2006) - when the Games Room received an updated layout - in which AAA poses a series of game-related challenges for seven or eight consecutive days. Each day brings a new set of challenges with simple clues as to what must be done to complete them. They can vary from achieving a certain score in a certain game, to favouriting or rating certain games, or to achieving a total number of games played. There are daily item prizes and, at the end, trophies. As of Y11 (2009) Lulu has also featured in the GMC, representing an extra, Neocash element to the event.

In Y13 (2011) the GMC's format was somewhat reinvented: Including Abigail (usually only seen in the Daily Dare) in the event, it became 'Brains vs. Brawn' with AAA and Abigail representing Team Brains and Team Brawn respectively. Players chose which team to support for the week - a choice that was best made strategically, since the type of games they would then be playing reflected the brain/brawn divide. Lulu also returned with another Neocash element this year.

  • 2010: 23rd-29th

December - Advent Calendar

The Advent Calendar has been a regular daily for the month of December since Y2 (2000). Users can visit each day for a new animation and two to three item prizes, as well as small gifts of neopoints.

The 'Plastic Fir' avatar can be obtained by visiting the Advent Calendar on December 1st. The 'Seasonal Attack Pea' avatar is also available on a certain day of the Calendar, but the day varies every year and cannot be predicted. The 'Winter Holiday' site theme is, again, available from the Calendar - however, the exact requirements for earning it are unknown, beyond the fact that it seems to be more complex than simply visiting on a certain day.

A running gag of the Advent Calendar features the Pant Devil stealing the user's daily prize - usually the 'Rod of Supernova', a rare and expensive item - on a random day of the Calendar. Nobody is actually intended to receive the Rod of Supernova as their prize and nobody ever does.
