I'm New to Battling, Where do I Start?

To start out your battling career, you'll first need to train your pet!

Where Do I Train My Pet?
There are currently three training schools you can train your pet at:

Cap'n Threelegs' Swashbucking Academy
- Like everything else on Krawk Island, this school its paid for by Dubloons, and the courses are longer than Mystery Island, yet cheaper. This is a good place to start your training.
- Swashbucking only takes pets up to level 40.
- On special pet days, Swashbucking gives FREE training to the special pets under level 40.
- On Neopet's Birthday (November 15), ALL pets under level 40 recieves free training!

Mystery Island Training School
- This school is paid by random Codestones. You won't know what codestones are asked until you enroll in a course.
- Mystery Island Training School trains pets up to level 250. Beyond level 250, pets proceed to Ninja Training School.

Secret Ninja Training School
- Secret Ninja School trains pets with levels above 250. It will be available to you only then.
- This school is paid by random Red Codestones. You can make red codestones by combining any 10 regular codestones at the Mystery Island Volcano. It is random what red codestones you get!
- The Ninja School shop is available to purchase various weapons.
- You can donate to the Ninja Statue for a chance for a super bonus!
- Unlike the other two schools, you can cancel a course if you wish. Most would cancel if they are asked for an expensive codestone.

What Should I Train First?
First, you need to know what each course entails and what the ancromyns are:

Lvl Level Trains Level
Str Strength Trains Strength
Def Defence Trains Defence
Mov Movement Trains Movement
HP Hit Points/ Health Trains Endurance
A stat is one point of str, def, mov, or HP.

You can train a stat 2x's to your level (exception is Health which can be trained 3x's to your level)
- EXAMPLE: If your pet's level is 10, you can train your str, def and mov up to 20. Your Health can go up to 30, however, you'll have to raise your level half the Health in order to train Str, Def and Mov.

NOTE: Training movement is completely optional and is not required for performance in the Battledome. However, certain weapons DO require a certain amount of movement. If you decide to train movement, It is highly recommend to train early in your training while the costs are cheap.

Dedicated Trainer Recommendations:

-- Your battle pet should be the only one on your account. This ensures all random stats from Faerie Quests, Kitchen Quests and random event stats are given to your battle pet, and not stray to your non-battler.

-- Stock up on those codestones! Snipe them from the wiz for cheap and hoard them. Use them as needed!

-- Keep your stats even as possible throughout your training.

-- Do not lab your battlepet, unless you are willing to re-train any lost stats. It can get pricey!

-- The Lab Ray can and will zap any pets under level 50 back to level 1. Do not risk this, DO NOT Lab your battle pet if its under level 50! (or don't lab at all!)

-- Low on Health? If you have at least 1 Health point, you can battle the Inflatable Balthazar in the battledome to restore all lost Health. This is useful when you do not have a healing potion in handy!

What are Boosts?

A Boost is when your pet reaches a certain stat point and gains extra power in the battledome. This means your pet will cause more damage per icon in the battledome. The stat is what point your str, def, mov and Health is at. Basically, with each boost your pet obtains, the stronger they will become! Remember, boosts only apply towards your str and def!

The table below will tell you what str and def stat points does what damage per icon.

Stat Boost

NOTE: Defence has the same boosts as strength. The table works for defence per icon as well.

To calculate how much damage you can do to your opponent you can use the following formula:

. # of icons from your weapons
x Damage per icon (based on your strength boost)
x % of damage based on attack ability used by you
x % of damage based on attack ability used by opponent
= Damage to your opponent

This formula works both ways - The amount of damage your pet suffers is based on the ability you use.

What are Abilities?

What are the Default Abilities?
These abilities are available in the drop-down menu in the battledome. These are default for everyone. Each default abilities deals a certain damage per icon.

At level 50, your pet will automatically be granted Berserk as an ability. It adds more damage per icon.

Abilities
Damage per Icon
Defend
0.8
Cautious Attack
1.0
Normal Attack
1.2
Jump & Attack
1.3
Fierce Attack
1.4
Berserk Attack
1.5

Example: If you use fierce attack, your weapons will cause more damage to your opponent than if you used cautious attack.

- The defend ability always decreases your attack by 20% and reduces the amount of damage done to your pet by 20% regardless of your pet's defence.
- If your opponent is frozen, the damage that you do will be the same as if he used cautious attack.

What are Faerie Abilities?
Faerie abilities are obtained by using Bottled Faeries on your pet.
Note: When your faerie disappears without granting your pet an ability (Saying your pet is too inexperienced), it means your pet's level is not high enough to be used.

Did you know?
Neopets has provided a guide regarding which abilities you get with each level? However, the page only goes up to level 25.
Click here to see said page.

- Faerie abilities will only work when you have power left. You can find this out by looking at the power bar beneath your pet's image in the battledome. When this bar runs out, your abilities will no longer work. Cautious attack will be used when your bar is depleted.
- Some abilities can also affect your opponent's attacks.
- If your opponent is frozen the damage you do will be the same as if he uses cautious attack.

Suggested Faerie Abilities

lvl 6 Firey Gaze 3 Bottled Fire Faeries 13% chance of freezing + 1 Light
lvl 10 Burrow 4 Bottled Earth Faeries Blocks all Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Physical
lvl 21 Drain Life 7 Bottled Dark Faeries Steals HP from Opponent 11% or 100 Health max
lvl 22 Restore 7 Bottled Light Faeries Heals 33% of your Health
lvl 23 Regeneration 8 Bottled Earth Faeries Heals 33% of your Health
lvl 28 Diamond Dust 8 Bottled Water Faeries 16% chance of freezing + 1 Light
lvl 30 Sink 8 Bottled Dark Faeries Blocks all Light, Dark, Water, Fire, Physical

What are Species Abilities?
Each species has their own abilities. It does not matter what species it is, each does similar damage per icon as another species. The species abilities unlock after a certain level.

Some abilities are only unlocked on the species special days, and only for that one day.

Example: Kacheek has Kacheek Sneak (Does nothing), Kacheek Roll (Defends 2 Earth and 2 Physical icons) and Kacheek Smile (acts as Berserk; attacks 2 Earth, 2 Light + Earth and Light).

Top_____________________________________________________________________________________

What are Icons?

Icons shows what kind of attack you and your opponents are using.

The icons with a red slash through it means those icons has been defended.

When you learn what icons your opponent uses against you, you can then decide what weapons would be good defence against their icons. What weapons has which icons varies. More on this later.

Physical

Earth

Dark

Air

NOTE: Certain weapons do less than a full icon of damage even though in the battledome it may show as a full icon (5.5 icon damage instead of 6 icon damage).

How Should I Choose My Weapon Set?

An ideal battle set should consist of the following: 2-3 Attacks, 2 Defence, Bomb, Stealer, Healer and Freezer.

It is best to have a variety of different icons. Having a set of different icons in battle makes it difficult for your opponent to block your attack.

Types of Weapons

Attack Offensive weapons that you use to do damage to your opponent.
Defense Weapons that will block damage done to you.
Reflectors Instead of just blocking damage, it will reflect it and send it back to your opponent.
Freezers Freezing weapons will temporarily "freeze" your opponent for one full round. During this round your opponent cannot harm you.
Healers Healing weapons will replenish your pets hitpoints in the battledome. There are many different healers, all varying the price and amount in which they heal.
Stealers Stealing weapons will steal the first item in your opponent's lineup for the remainder of the battle. This can be very useful depending on what you steal!

If anyone has suggested sets for certain budgets, please do let me know and you will be credited :)

What use are Faerie Quest?

Faerie quests are very useful when it comes to training your pet. They give certain stats to random pets after you retrieve the requested items for said faerie. This is most likely the cheapest way to train your pet.

A faerie will randomly appear and request an item from you. You must find the item without using a shop wiz (as it will be banned for the time being), and return it to the faerie here in order to get the stats.

Tip: Faeries grant stats to a random pet on your account. Most serious battledomers usually have only the battle pet on their account to ensure the stats will go to the right pet!

The Faeries and what they offer:
Neopets has already provided a page regarding what the faeries offer and what items they generally request.
You can click here to see said page.

Here is the brief run down of what the faeries grant:
Earth Faerie: Makes your pets full
Light Faerie: 1 level
Darkness Faerie: 2 HP
Fire Faerie: 2 strength
Water Faerie: 2 defense
Faerie Queen: 1 level, 3 HP, 3 strength
Space Faerie: 4 levels
Fountain Faerie: A free color of your choice for your pet

Did you know?
Kitchen Quests can also randomly give stats, not just items? The stats are given randomly to each pet.

More Tips

There are several other ways in increasing your pet's stats, some pricey, some cheap or free.
I will be working more on this section ASAP.

The Dailies:
Certain dailies can offer your pets stats such as these:
Coltzan's Shrine: Visiting the shrine with a lower level pet can offer your pet a random stat, as well as intellegence.
Scratchcards: Festering Fortunes, Faeries Fortune and Terror Trove scratch cards can give your pet a chance to win a level (random to which pet)
Fruit Machine: When you win a big prize, stats are often rewarded to a random pet.

Stat Items:
There are items around neopia that can give stats to your pet. Not all items will surely give stats, they can be random.
I will go more indepth on this section soon as I gather all the information.

Note: Not all stat increaser items are listed. I will do so ASAP.

Potions:
Potions are not always a guarentee your pet will get the stat intended. They are generally cheaper for its randomness.

Bomberry Elixir: A chance at 1 Defence, or deals damage to your pet.
Strength Serum: 1-4 Strength
Essence Of Drackonack: A chance at 1-2 Strength
Greater Earthen Potion: 2 Strength, 2 Intellegence
Cooling Balm Of The Warrior: Little chance at 1-2 Defence
Meridellian Potion of Defence: 0-3 Defence
Irritable Genie-in-a-Bottle: 1-2 Levels

Neggs:
Certain neggs will offer stats. You can trade in various neggs for tokens for stat neggs at the Neggery here.

Basic Power Negg: May give +1 Defence
Silver Knight Negg: 1-2 Defence
Power Negg: 1 Strength

Snegg: 2-3 Max Hit Points, 2-3 Movement Points
Spiked Negg: 2-3 Max Hit Points
Super Negg: 1 level, 1-3 Max Hit Points, 1-3 Movement Point
Cool Negg: 1-2 level, 1-3 Max Hit Points, 1-3 Movement Point, 1-3 Strength Points
Ferocious Negg: 1-3 Strength and gives your pet a random disease

Books/Scrolls:
Not only books and scrolls offer intellegence points, but some offer stats as well, how handy! However, some scrolls take away intellegence.
Note: Books and Scrolls are Once per Pet, not multiples like other increasers.

Mummified Scroll: 1-3 HP and takes 1-3 movement, once per pet. May decrease Intelligence by 1
Scroll of the Warrior: 1-3 Defence while decreasing your pet's Movement by the same amount
