Maibe's Sand Dune

Under heavy construction!

You open your eyes and see nothing but blue. You wonder where you are when you realize you are looking up at the sky. I must have fallen asleep on the front yard, you think, chuckling as you close your eyes slightly. You then sit up and gasp. All around you is sand. You turn around, hoping there is something else there, but there is nothing but the sand and the sky. You look around desperately for footprints to lead you away, but they seem to have disappeared. You sigh and lean back against the sand to think of a plan. That is when you notice you are not alone. A Lupess is standing a couple hundred feet away from you. Her tan, sandy fur is blowing, although there is no wind. Her paws seem to be stained black as well as her tail. The black fades as it gets closer to the tan and the colors seem to mix. She looks solemn and forboding, but you ignore this. You stand up and begin running towards her. She makes no move to leave. You soon see that she has an Ankh charm around her neck and her eyes greatly resemble the symbol, the eye of Horus. You are about fifty feet away when she seems to disappear like some sort of mirage. You stop, gawking at the spot she left. Mirages are not as detailed as that. A warm wind blows, and a book is revealed beneath the sand. It is worn and tattered and the binding seems to be falling apart. You delicately pick it up and open to the first page. The whole thing seems to be handwritten and some words seem to be fading slightly, but the book is legible nonetheless. You being reading...

The Story of Maibemukantagara

A war raged on all around me and my mother. Grarrls battling Lupes; the Lupes were slowly dying. A red Grarrl noticed that we could safely get away, so he attacked immediately. He bit my mother's hind leg and blood splashed over her snowy white fur. My mother carried me in her mouth and ran quickly away. I remember looking back at my father whom I only knew for a minute as his throat was gashed by the teeth of a Grarrl. I watched him die in front of my very own eyes. His firey pelt was soon out of view and my mother continued running.
We ran all the way to the Ice Caves where she knew the rest of the family would be. Her wound bled profusely but she did not let it slow her until she had lost far too much blood. She slowed her pace to a walk before collapsing to the ground. She let me out of her mouth and whispered, "Continue to find the others. They shall take you with them to a new home." Her eyes slowly closed. As her breathing stopped I did not cry out mournfully, only a single tear slid off my nose. It landed in her soft fur and I noticed something hidden beneath it. A beautiful Ankh charm. Though it was slightly big for me at the time, I slid it over my head. I picked a snow-covered flower, laid it over my mother, and walked away. There was nothing else I could do.
I did as she had instructed and walked in the direction I believed the others had left in. I stopped when I heard a desperate cry of "Coyote!" The name sounded familiar, as did the voice saying it. I ran forward and stopped right on time. If I had stopped any later I would have slid off the edge of the ice into the dark crevice. I saw my brother sitting on the other side. "Earther!" I shouted loudly. He looked up and I saw his sad eyes. It appeared as though he had been crying. "What happened?" "Nothing," he said. "I don't want you to know of this sadness," he added quietly, not knowing I had heard him. He then had me leap over the narrowest part of the crevice to the side he was on. We walked down the icy mountain to look for the others.
When we reached the bottom of the mountain, we were surprised that our family was nowhere in sight. We headed over to the boat docks anyway. We thought that they would catch up. He handed the Nimmo at the register some neopoints for tickets and asked for two to Meridell.
I'm sorry, we are fresh out. How about some tickets to the Lost Desert? It is not too far south of Meridell." Earther thought for a second, but since he knew no more about geography than I did at the time he agreed. "Ok then, two tickets for the Lost Desert." The Nimmo eagerly took the money and handed us the tickets. We hoped that our family would find us alright. We heard the sudden shout of "All aboard for the Lost Desert!" and ran towards the boat we were to board. We jumped on at the last moment and the boat left port. As the boat traveled over the sea I gazed into the water. I stared at it through the whole boat ride. Earther was constantly asking what was wrong, and I always said nothing. It wasn't nothing though. I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that somewhere along the line we made a wrong choice. It would cost both of us a great deal, too. But I said nothing.
As the boat docked at the Lost Desert my breath caught in my throat. All around us was sand. It stretched out beyond my field of vision in all directions. Neither of us knew where to go. Earther squeezed my paw, comforting both of us, and we began our trek across the vast desert.
It was only halfway through the day, but both of us were exausted, over-heated, and extremely thirsty. No water was available to either of us. Earther kept saying he saw water in the distance, but it was a mirage every time. Just that alone was killing me. Getting my hopes up about being able to drink, just to have my them smashed again and again. Finally, my thirst, exaustion, and the extreme heat got to me. Earther's voice became distant and I could only hear vague words. "Maibe... oasis... saved! Maibe?... MAIBE!" Then I saw a beautiful white light before everything went black.
I opened my eyes and blinked against the bright sun. Something seemed different now; I seemed lighter somehow. How strange, I thought. I sat up and was about to look for Earther when I heard sobbing not too far away. I spun around and saw Earther weeping over something, but I couldn't see what it was. I walked over quickly and gasped with shock and fright. He was laying over a small, frail looking body. She had sand colored fur, black legs, a black tail, and an Ankh around her neck. It was me.
That was when I finally noticed what Earther was saying through the tears. "No Maibe, don't leave me. We're so close, don't you see?! Don't leave me now!" He then broke into another fit of sobs and lay over my body as if to protect me. I was no longer there, though. He couldn't save me now. After what seemed like hours he dug a ditch in the sand and laid my body in it. "I will not let the vultures get you," he said defensively as he packed the sand over my body. He placed a slab of stone over the makeshift grave and all of a sudden his paws began glowing bright green. A beam of green light shot out of them and inscribed on the stone:
Here lies Maibemukantagara. May she rest in peace.
He gasped and seemed as surprised as I when this happened. He then stared at the stone before turning and fleeing, almost as though he was afraid of the magic he used.

You are one of the chosen few I have let view my life's story.

You close the book and wonder, Was that Maibemukantagara I saw earlier? You shake your head and think, No, it had to be my imagination. You hold the book under your arm and begin walking, hoping you are traveling in the right direction. You do not want to end up like her. All of a sudden, you stop.
If this book was written from the position of Maibe, than how could it still be written after she died? How did it get here? You look at the book for a second before dropping it like it was a venomous snake.
Watch it! That book is very delicate.
You spin around, very surprised someone is there when there wasn't anyone before. "Who... Who are you?" you ask in a trembling voice.
That does not matter now, says the Lupe you saw before. I believe you dropped my book. If it is damaged, you will pay a steep price for it. Her voice sounded as though it were the essence of the desert itself: the hissing of rattlesnakes and sidewinders, the roughness of the hot sand, the clarity of the blue sky above.
