Welcome

Welcome to The Writer's Block hosted by The Faerie Shelter - The Guild. The Writer's Block was created to help our guild members boost their knowledge and technique when it comes to creative writing and character creation! This section of our guild is run by our own Neopian Times published member, Faith.

During our opening stages, some activities may be removed, changed or added as interest for The Writer's Block grows.

Suggest your ideas!

Itching to include an activity that isn't available? Great! Mail Faith with any information regarding your activity, whether it's completely thought out or just an idea. If you're interested in hosting your own Writer's Block activity, please mention that in your message!

    PACKAGE HOLIDAY!

Do you remember dancing to the Macarena as a young child in the kid's club of a Package Holiday resort? No? Consider yourself lucky (I still have a fear of pineapples)!

So what would be the ideal package holiday for your pets on Neo? Would they like an all inclusive trip to Terror Mountain, complete with Snowboarding lessons and Hot Chocolate in a chalet? Perhaps it's a Sun, Sea and Sand holiday on Mystery Island?

Now's the time to design your own Neopets Package Holiday! Plan an itinerary, review a hotel, use some Neopets pictures as Holiday Snaps... whatever you would like to see if you were picking a destination for your pet.

Be as creative as you want, but keep it completely Neopets related!

Do you have the perfect idea for a story in your head but you just can't get the plot to flow? Each month, we will release a new step to help make your plot memorable and the perfect base for any story.

Although there are no deadlines listed, we expect each step to take no longer than one month. This allows adequate time to perfect your piece.

Below is a navigation that will help you jump to the step you're currently working on. To view completed steps by fellow guildmates, please visit our Archives.

  • Step 1: Story Goal.
  • Step 2: Consequence.
  • Step 3: Coming July of 2015
  • Step 4: Coming August of 2015
  • Step 5: Coming September of 2015

    Step One: Story Goal

This month we are focussing on the Story Goal. This is as simple as it sounds, but it is possibly the most important part of your plot. It's what the story is all about!

We will list a few questions that, by answering, will help you develop your story goal for step one of your plot.

1: Who is your protagonist (main character)? 2: What does your protagonist want to achieve or the problem they want to resolve? (this is the story goal!)
3: Why does your protagonist want to achieve this goal/solve this problem? 4: How does this goal/problem affect the story world/other characters?

    Step Two: Consequence

Now you've got your Story Goal all worked out (or you're still tweaking it!), the next step is developing the Consequence. This is the negative thing that happens if your story goal is not achieved... Simple, but crucial!

Have a go at answering these questions to better develop the Consequence of your story plot.

1: What is the consequence of the protagonist (main character) not achieving their goal? 2: Is the negative situation already in place, or will it occur if the protagonist fails?
3: How will this consequence affect the protagonist especially? 4: Why should the reader be invested in hoping the protagonist avoids the consequence?

    Step Three: Coming Soon...

Step Two will arrive on July 01, 2015.

  • Build a Character

Would you like to develop the perfect character for your pet(s)? Every month, we will release a new step to help build the perfect character! For the best results, every step should be completed.

Although there are no deadlines listed, we expect each step to take no longer than one month. This allows adequate time to perfect your piece.

Below is a navigation that will help you jump to the step you're currently working on. To view completed steps by fellow guildmates, please visit our Archives.

  • Step 1: Identity.
  • Step 2: Physical Appearance.
  • Step 3: Coming July of 2015
  • Step 4: Coming August of 2015
  • Step 5: Coming September of 2015

    Step One: Identity

This month we are focussing on your pet's identity. This is the basis for all other character steps to follow - who your pet is. Are they a thieving rogue; an honourable knight; a dainty Usuki girl; a carefree teenager; or something else entirely? What this is is completely up to you!

By answering these questions, it should help you build your pet's identity, figuring out who they are and touching on why they are like that. As the steps move on, you are encouraged to review and possibly edit this step as the character will develop when you look into it in more depth!

1: What is your pet like? (eg, docile, cynical, Usuki's no.1 fan) 2: What isn't your pet like? (eg, patient, a meat eater, a fan of Quigukis)
3: How does this equate to a temperament? (such as their normal moods or how they react to situations) 4: How do other pets perceive your pet? (base this on their temperament etc)
5: How does your pet enforce their personality? (eg, lecturing people on Usukis, refusing to help others due to lack of patience) 6: Is this a true representation of their identity? (are they hiding something or trying to be someone they're not?)

    Step Two: Physical Appearance

This is, at first, a simple step in building your character. But once you start to delve deeper into your pet's character and appearance, you will realise there's a huge amount of work in creating their physical appearance.

The following questions should help you build up a description of your pet beyond what you can already see, while still referencing what is still in front of you.

1: Without looking at your pet, what is their physical appearance like? Be as detailed as you can, moving from head to (possibly) tail. 2: Now have a look at your pet; is there anything you have missed out? Is that part an important part of their physique?
3: Can you describe any of their physical features in a novel way (eg, "Claws like obsidian" or "Wings as ethereal as a faerie's")? Try using similes and metaphors. 4: Are any of their physical features down to events that have happened to them in their life, such as a scar or injured leg; and if so, what caused it?
5: How does their appearance affect their personality? (eg, grumpy due to being an outcast, helps everyone due to the help they received when injured) 6: Could someone now identify your pet without seeing their picture? Could a non-Neopian get a good idea of what they looked like too? Test it on people ("Guess which pet I'm talking about" or similar)
