The amber light blinked on. Cars stopped and went, the automobiles sweeping by on the white-lined asphalt.
Midnight.
People are still swarming the busy streets. Lights illuminated the sidewalks and streetcorners and the city is full of activity. Cars beep at eachother, people yelling, cursing, arguing with eachother without moving their mouths. In the city, machines, gas-driven pieces of iron, do everything for you. By 1AM the world starts to slow down, and by 2AM the people start heading home.
3AM.
A single car drives by and a lonely man walks along the crosswalk. A dark coloured animal walks slowly along the sidewalk. The slight breeze ruffles his thin fur and his pace quickens and slows at every sight of moving shadows, but most of the time the streetlights are tricksters. The shadows that frighten the young creature are his own.
Canine paws stepped over the uneven cracks in the pavement. You watch him; the canine simply walking, looking for nothing in particular as he patrols the streets. Hello... Your voice sounds loud as it clashes with the rare city silence. The dog looks up and blinks, but says nothing. Why do you do this, walk all alone in the night? For some reason you feel confident with yourself, you're unafraid of this creature, and you're unbelievably curious.
Because I have to, the dog says simply.
Why?

I'm not allowed to do this. But finally I found the courage write down things in a book.
