Prologue

I don't know much anymore except this;
My name is Lae Maria Quaro.
I was named after my grandmother Mariaquo.
I am an Ogrin.
I had a love and a son.
They are both dead.
My name is Lae
And I am also dead.

Scary realityblood filled nightmare

The ground squelches beneath your feet as you run frantically. You have no idea where you are; the darkness is all that is around you and all that surrounds you. The ground is thick and oozes a salty stench, and it makes your feet sink every time you take a single step. You stagger into something long, thin and cold. You scream as something pierces your flesh. You have walked straight onto a metal pike. You stagger backwards, squinting in the extremely dim light. A fence. An iron-wrought fence tipped with sharp points on each post. You feel around with one hand, keeping the other on your pulsing wound. Your hand brushes onto what feels like a padlock. It is unlocked. You know what this means. A gate of some sort.

You meekly open it, and cringe at the horrifically high squeak it emits. You stagger through, the squelching stopping and the ground becoming stony. You walk aimlessly around, until you can walk no longer. Clutching the painful wound in your side, you flop onto the ground. You scream as you hit your head on a huge slab of stoneand black out, the world becoming an eternal night.

Your eyes flicker open. The night is slightly lighter because of the full moon blaring down from the sky. You glance down your body, and see that your clothes are coated in dry blood. How did that happen? And then the memories come flooding back like a river bursting its banks. You feel for the woundbut cannot find it. You look straight forwards, and yelp in surprise. You have been lying on a grave. A rotting heap of flowers lies to one side, whilst a picture of a happy-looking reddish-grey Ogrin with a pretty pink female and a brown Ogrin cub is placed on top of them, grinning. Beside the photograph is a tiny little wooden Ogrin. You inspect them both, wanting to know whom it belongs to.

It reads; Here lies Lae Maria Quaro. His death is an eternal sorrow to all who knew him. Loving mate of Haevu, and father of Nanro, deceased. He is buried alongside his family so that he may live on with them. They each died unfair deaths. He will remain in all of ours hearts forever. You swallow the lump in your throat. So touchingand suddenly a red glow is cast across the gravestone.

."But of course, I never lived on with them." You whip around to see an odd, glowing creature standing opposite you on the grave. It has thick black fur, but around its paws it is ripped away, leaving trailing fur to drag on the ground and eerie blue skin, the fingers of its paws tipped with vicious claws. Upon its back are five red stripes, and a spiky red mane runs down its head. It has long ears, with red fluffy tail tips. Just below its ears are long, curved, yellowing horns, the tips sharp and pointed. It has a mouth full of pointed, blood-stained teeth, and its eyes are like lava pools; crimson red and glaring. "This is my grave."

You stare blankly. If this thing's grave is here, then how is it standing in front of you? As if can read your thoughts, the creature continues to speak.

."I am a ghost; the living dead. My name is Lae." You gulp. "I'mguest" Lae glares at you. "Ok. As for what my grave says, Haevu and Nanro will never live forever with me. They are both dead." You blink.

."Then how?"

.Lae flashes you a toothy grin as you state your confusion. "am I here? I guess the Gods above or Satan decided they wanted me to live on. Half of me is gone, the living half, but my soul and spirit still remain. The soul makes up my personality, but mine is being eaten alive. Little chunks disappearingmy spirit is what my form is now. A ghost. My name means 'Living Dead' in the language of my ancient ancestors. I suppose that's true, too." You blink, and take a step backwards, your backbone clashing painfully with Lae's gravestone.

You cry out in pain, and drop to your knees. Lae simply stands at the foot of his grave, gazing at the headstones beside it. The names; Haevu and Nanro. You look up into Lae's eyes. You have never seen such emotion. Such pain and rage, sorrow and love; a battle being fought in his eyes. Swirled with emotions and memories. Lae sees you staring, and glares at you.

."I suppose you want to know how I died. Andhowshe died. A-andhowmy s-sond-died." His voice cracks. You nod, and wait. Lae sits on his grave, and sighs.

Story

I was born in the midst of a war. Altador and the Haunted Woods were fighting for the rule of Shenkuu, the small region near Altador. Nobody knew why the Haunted Woods wanted total control, but up until then, Shenkuu had been a totally independent kingdom. Nowthe blood fest and pain had begun. In the midst of the fighting in Altador, two Ogrins, a large red male and a smaller greenish-gold female, ran for their lives. Bombs were dropped behind them, leaving destruction in their wake. Explosions roared in front of them, meaning they had to frequently stop, cowering in fear.

They ran on, screams of the dying ringing in their ears and blood caked on their paws. The female was pregnant, making running even harder for her. She eventually had to stop, gasping and moaning. Her mate glanced back, and saw that she had stopped. He ran back, and half-lead, half-dragged her into a small, cramped burrow underneath the ground. His mate cried out in pain as she gave birth to two Ogrin cubs. Of course, I was one of these cubs. I had thick, reddish-grey fur, and brilliant emerald eyes. My brother had dark purple fur, and deep golden eyes.

Immediately, my mother shoved us in front her, in case someone came from the back, and my father stood in front of us, in case someone attacked from the front. We had not yet been named, but my brother and I climbed other each other, mewing piteously. I nudged him underneath his snout, and he licked me back, whining. My mother smiled at us, enjoying watching young ones playing together.

."Laeand Recch." She gestured to each of us. I am not sure, but in the language of my mother's ancient ancestors, I think Lae meant 'Living Dead', and Recch meant 'Sunshine of Hell'. I'm not sure why she gave us such daunting names, but maybe she sensed that someday, I would become the Living Dead. I think we lay there for about a week. But one day, when we were all together, a rumble echoed through the hollow. We'd gone straight into a bomb hollow. My mother screamed for us to get outand the bomb exploded. My father was blown out of the hollow, and Recch and I were shot from the ground as well. There was no sign of my mother. I landed with such a force that the breath was knocked out of me. I slipped in and out of consciencesand blacked out. But that wasn't the day I died. Nowhere near.

I awoke to silence. The bombs had stopped exploding, and all was still. I groaned in pain as I hoisted myself to my feet. II was still alive. But in pain; my ribs were bruised and my head throbbed. I looked around me. The night was starless, and the sky echoed an eerie darkness. I looked around for Recch or my parents ormy foot hit something slightly squishy. I looked down slowly, and screamed. It was the head of my mother. Blood was strewn across the ground, and so were her bones and her furand her organs.

It was disgusting to see her heart and stomach lying limp on the floor, their colour a dirty grey-pink. My gorge rose. I looked back to her lifeless head, and saw that her eyes were missing, leaving empty, black sockets. Blood dripped down her face, and saddened her fur. Drops of rain fell from the sky, and soon my fur was soaked. But I didn't care. I just stayed there, looking at her deceased head being washed away in the storm. My gorge rose even more, and I vomited all over the place. I slumped to the floor, my head lying in the pile of stinking sick. I closed my eyes, hating the filthy taste in my mouth as rain dripped onto my head.

Cries for help brought me back to the world. I raised my head, my mane hanging in strings around my head. Tiny beads of vomit were caked into it. I snarled, and looked around for where the sound was coming from. Nothing. The rain had changed to a light drizzle now, and the sun peered out on a blood-stained world from behind a cloud.

."Lae" My brother's voice rang through the world. I looked around, and saw my brother, his body a mess. Blood covered his dark-purple fur, and a deep wound caressed his left side. I looked around for something to help him with, but I couldn't find anything.

."I-I'm sorry, Recch, b-but I c-can't help" I choked on tears. Recch's eyes glittered with tears. He knew that I could not carry him for long, and that he would just keep bleeding, as I had nothing to help him.

."L-look for father" He whispered. I nudged him under his chin, and set off to find my father. I looked all around me for some sort of clue to where he was. Nothing. A small breeze picked upand I scented him! I ran away from Recch, towards my father. I saw a heap of heaving red fur. I bounded down to my father, squeaking. He sighed, and sat up. He was unharmed! I leapt into the air, and crashed into him. He growled.

."Laeyou're alive." His eyes suddenly filled with tears. I nodded, leaping and slipping on the fresh blood that coated the ground in a slimy blanket.

."And Recch is too! Come on, we can find him!" My father smiled. He heaved himself to his feet, and limped after me. The bomb blast, I could see as I looked closer, had taken off one of his ears, and his right back leg was at an odd angle. I ignored him, and found Recch. I nodded triumphantly. My father gasped in horror and sadness. I blinked, confused, and looked down at my feet. I gasped also. Recch's stomach had been torn from his bodythat hadn't been there before either. A silver knife with a bone handle lay deep in his spine, and it had gone through his stomach. "FaL-L-Lae" He squeaked. My father knelt beside him, sobbing. Recch looked straight at me, ignoring my father. "R-r-remember b-b-b-brother. F-f-orever a-and...ever..." Recch's paw brushed across my faceand...and then his beautiful golden eyes glazed over in an ever-lasting sleep. "It's time to fly" I said, sobbing into my paws. My father howled. I thought he was just showing his pain, and so I howled with him, singing my pain and anger to the world.

My father howled again. I ripped my eyes open, and whipped around. Haunted Woods soldiers. One was huge, a massive burly Skeith holding a vicious slate-topped spear. He had thick camouflage-coloured armour, and a metal helmet on his head. The spear he was holding was plunged deep into my father's back. The other soldier was a small Uni, with bullet-proof armour covering its body and a helmet on its head, with a gap in it for the Uni's horn to poke through. It was viciously sharp. The Uni grunted, and stamped its hooves. It was the Skeith's steed. It must have been pretty strong to be able to hold up such a large Skeith. I growled, but hid behind them, so they could not see me. The Skeith jarred his spear upwards, so that he caught my father's lungs and ripped them out with a painfully disgusting 'squelch'. My gorge rose. I had to grit my teeth hard to stop me from retching.

After the Skeith had ripped my father's lungs out, hehe ate them. He swallowed them with relish, and laughed. The Uni snorted, and the Skeith ripped his spear from my father's carcass. He then kicked my father's corpse to the ground, and turned to walk away. I was right underneath the Uni's hooves, but I didn't move. The Skeith hoisted himself onto the Uni, kicked its sidesI was trampled. Not to death, but I wanted to be dead. The painso much pain. I screamed, but the Uni ran off, and I faded into darkness.

Six years later

. "Lae..." Voices? I groaned. I was in terrible pain.

. "L-Lae?" Again...

."Lae" A voice saying my name. A hand shaking my shoulder. I could here itbut then again, I heard the voices all the time. I moaned, and tried to open my eyes. They fluttered, and I snarled. I tossed and turned, trying to break free of the wires that covered my body. "No! Stop! You'll hurt yourself, Lae" I opened my eyes, managing to keep them open. A Peophin in a nurse's uniform smiled at me. "Welcome back, Lae!" I blinked. Then all the memories came flooding back to me.

."FatherRecchWHERE ARE THEY?" The nurse blinked, and her eyes filled with sorrow.

."Oh, Laethey died six years ago. You were trampled almost to death by a Uni, but some Altadorian soldiers recognised your father's body, buried him and brought you here. You've been in a coma ever since" I gasped. Six years? I struggled, wanting to break free of the hospital's lumpy bed. The nurse gently but firmly pushed me back down. "Lae. You've got to rest. Y-" She stopped as a Gelert doctor entered the room. I snarled, ripping back my head. The doctor thrust something into my arma needlethe world blurred as I began to retch. I threw up over myself, and blacked out...again.

I came to at night. The small window to my right let in the moon's gentle rays. The stars glittered around it, happy to be freeI growled. A machine beside me beeped in rhythm with my heartI growled again. I wrenched the wires covering me from my body, and thrust back the covers. I felt really sick, but there was nothing I could do. I leapt onto the floorand fell over. I couldn't believe it. Had I forgotten how to walk? I heaved myself to my feet, and put my front paws onto the window ledge. I somehow managed to unlatch the window (using my teeth), and hoisted myself up onto the window ledge. I looked down. I was about two storeys high. I prayed to the Gods, and jumped.

I landed, painfully jarring my leg, but nothing cracked, so I must have been ok. I wobbled slightly as I stood to my feet. I looked around me. The night was calm, and the moon glittered in the sky. The stars shone, and trees provided cover for me. Behind me, I heard a nurse shriek. They raised the alarm that I had escaped. I laughed, and ran through the forest, weaving through the trees and leaping over the undergrowth.

A few days later, I reached the edge of the forest. For the past day or so, the forest had become leafless, but the trees became darker and sturdier. They raised a sinister aura, and I crept carefully through them. I came to a clearing, and stopped. Tents and houses lay in heaps, and a stone tower, Edna's tower, had been knocked to the ground. A tiny flame burnt inside an oil lamp outside the destroyed petpet shop. Crushed Slorgs littered the ground, and dead bodies lay in heaps. The Haunted Woods was certainly a mess after the war. I walked slowly through the forgotten camp, and gazed at the destruction. I wondered who had won the war, and looked around for any form of life. I heard a tiny sob, and I ran to the source of the sound.

I looked behind a crushed house, and gasped. A beautiful pink Ogrin with eyes like the setting sun was kneeling on the floor, sobbing over a tiny little red thing. Tears dripped onto the unmoving red fur, and her body shook as she cried.

."Hello?" I said softly. The Ogrin swirled around, a look of terror upon her face.

."No, no! Please don't hurt me" I swallowed. She probably thought I was a soldier coming to kill her. I shook my head, and sat on my haunches. She gulped.

. "You don't want to hurt me?" She said softly. I shook my head, and went to sit beside her. She glanced down at the red fur, and began to cry again.

. "Pleasedon't cry." I said, trying to comfort her. She sniffed heavily, and looked at me. I smiled. "Why are you crying?" The female sniffed again.

. "Perceusmy Devilpuss. They killed himwhen they knocked down my house. Hedidn't knowwhy. I can s-still feel his soulsbewilderedunable to believe why I couldn't save himb-b-but I was in the woods and-" Her sobs changed to howls. "IT'S NOT FAIR!" She moaned. I put my arm around her. She howled, and buried her face into my shoulder. "M-m-my n-name is H-Haevuit means 'Glow of Dawn'" She stuttered, trying to stop crying. I smiled at Haevu. Such a beautiful name for such a beautiful Ogrin

. "My name is Lae." I said. And that was that. We became firm friends after that. We lived just outside of the Haunted Woods, on the green that's near Brightvale, but also near to Neopia Central. Soon we fell into a blissful love. It was a perfect life. Soon, Haevu fell pregnant with my son, and we named him Nanro, which means 'Forever'. Life was a blissful gift to me then. But one day, it all changed.

Haevu decided she wanted to move closer to the Haunted Woods, so we packed up and left. We set up camp in the old camp-spot, now deserted. Haevu spent a lot of time in the graveyard, on her petpet's grave. It was a small stone box; a special relic. I didn't go with her, as I had to keep an eye on Nanro, but Haevu seemedwellshe wasn't herself. She didn't eat, she couldn't sleepI wondered if something was wrong, but whenever I asked her, she brushed it off and said she was fine. Nanro was too young to realise that anything was wrong, and just grinned all of the time. Well, one day, Haevu took Nanro with her to the graveyard. I was trying to make a wooden Ogrin for Nanro to play with, but I couldn't get the ears right. I stayed in the camp, whittling away at the wood until I had made it perfect. Haevu's cries brought me back to reality. The wooden toy fell from my grasp, and I ran towards the graveyard. I ran straight to Perceus' grave, where Haevu lay, blood trickling down her face. A stab wound was clear in her eye, and also in her neck.

I knelt beside her, taking her in my arms. She was still alivesuch a cruel fate for her. I forgot everythingjust Haevu. Time seemed to stop as her breathing slowed. Her eyelids fluttered open, and her gaze fixed on me. Tears fell onto her facemy tears. She smiled weakly.

. "LaeI love y-" She stopped in mid-sentence. Her breathing had stopped. At the top of my lungs, in my arms, she died. I sobbed, burying my face into her fur. I looked for an empty grave, and found the perfect one. Beside a beautiful fountain, a stone 'relic' box lay. I placed her gently in it, and closed the lid. She looked so peacefulI couldn't stop the tears now. They fell down my face, onto her grave, as Nanro cried for help. NanroI had forgotten him. I ran back to Perceus' grave, and saw Nanro was thrown on the top of the box.

. "N-Nanro?" I whispered. His arm lifted, and brushed my cheekjust like Recch did when he died.

. "I love you, Dad. Remember" And then, suddenly, his voice changed. "Remember me, Lae. Recch." I gasped. Recch's spirit was inside NanroI saw the breath escape Nanro's lips, and a ghostly Recch flew out, and soared into the sky. He looked back at me, and smiled. "Remember, brother? Forever and everyou promised. Remember...forever...and ever..." He smiled as his figure and voice faded away into nothing...and as he left my son's body, my son's eyes glazed over in a never-ending sleep. I howled my pain to the world. AlonealonealoneI somehow managed to heave back Haevu's grave and place Nanro with her. They could be together, even if I couldn't be with them. I closed the lid, and placed a picture of the three of us on top, and the wooden Ogrin that Nanro had never gotten a chance to play with. I cried for hours, just kneeling with my face on my family's grave.

Rain started to drizzle onto my head, but I did not notice. I stopped crying, and prayed to the Gods in the skies. "Let them stay together and someday let me be reunited with them" I finished praying, and, just as I did, something sharp was thrust into my back. I howled in pain, slumping onto Haevu and Nanro's grave. I opened my ever-closing eyesjust to see the ghost of a Devilpuss in front of me. It sneered at me. Its whole body was expanding...I gasped as it became a horrific giant mess. It had long, pointed black horns and claws, filthy red skin, and a long, pointed tail. Demon...

. "For I could not be with Haevu, you are punished for eternity so that you may never be with her either! Eternal life!" It punched me hard, and I coughed up blood. I tried to call out, but the world was slowing down, so slowly that I couldn'tbreathe. I fell down, down...into an empty grave beside Haevu's. The last sound I heard was the cackle of an evil creature. The When people began to return to the Haunted Woods, they filled in my grave and left a headstone to mark my place. Forever. That was my death day. But my soul never got to rest. And it never will...

A year later

My stomach heaved. I felt myself breaking freewaking up. I felt myself soaring upwardswas I going to the haven in the sky, where Haevu and Nanro roamed forever? I closed my eyesand burst from the ground, landing in a heap on the ground. Haevu's grave was covered in ivy, and I glanced ahead of me. A gravestone. I read it as tears fell down my face. Here lies Lae Maria Quaro. His death is an eternal sorrow to all who knew him. Loving mate of Haevu, and father of Nanro, deceased. He is buried alongside his family so that he may live on with them. They each died unfair deaths. He will remain in all of ours hearts forever.

I snorted. I could not live on with themI was stuck on this world and they were in another. I snarled, and swung my head. I clashed with a headstoneand split it. I gasped, and felt my head. HornsI had horns. I whipped around and looked at my tail as it squirmed uncomfortably. I blinked. My fur was split into two sections, with a long, red, sharp thing sticking out from between them. I jabbed a flower, and it died, brown and crispy. I was poisonous... I looked down at myself. Ripped black fur covered my blue flesh and an eerie red glow surrounded me. I wasa ghost? I roared. Life was so cruel

I don't really remember what I did after that. I wandered the graveyard, staring at the graves of others. I learnt of many that had died in the war, and many that had died of other things. I circled the entire place every day, but always came back to Haevu's. Haevu's grave was the last one I came to everyday, and the one I slept by. I'd engraved something on the top. Just to remember her...Haevu Quaro. Loving mate of Lae Maria Quaro (deceased) and Nanro Quaro (deceased). She will be remembered forever...

I also found Recch's grave. I wasn't really sure who had buried him in this graveyard, but his grave was right next to mine. I just stood and read his gravestone for hours on end, gazing at the wilting bunches of flowers that were thrust upon it.Recch Maria Quaro. Brother of Lae Maria Quaro. He will be remembered. Forever and ever. His words were engraved on his headstone...his last words. I don't know why I stayed in this godforsaken graveyard. I don't know why I'm still alone.

You blink back tears. So saddening to think that Lae was aloneyou look beside you, and see Haevu's grave. It is covered in ivy, like Lae said. It looks kind of beautifulLae sighs, and tells you about himself.

Song Lyrics

The Ghost of You by My Chemical Romance

I never said I'd lie and wait forever
If I died, we'd be together
I can't always just forget her
But she could try

At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever ever...
Ever...

Get the feeling that you're never
All alone and I remember now
At the top of my lungs in my arms she dies
She dies.

At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that are never gonna catch me

If I fall
If I fall (down)

At the end of the world
Or the last thing I see
You are
Never coming home
Never coming home
Never coming home
Never coming home
And all the things that you never ever told me
And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me
Never coming home
Never coming home
Could I? Should I?
And all the wounds that are ever gonna scar me
For all the ghosts that are never gonna...

Epilogue

Lae sighs. "That's all there is to know about me." He looks around himself. His eyes fix onto Haevu's grave. "Such a beautiful Ogrin" He murmurs. He gives you a look that shoots daggers. He growls, and disappears, leaving nothing but a small picture that says 'Lae' on it.
