Chapter One
Darkness. Gray clouds, dense with rain. Though it wasn't yet raining, there was that feeling in the air that came before a storm. Stillness, like time had stopped. Silence. The
leaves at the tops of the surrounding oak trees blew slightly in the cool breeze. The once
bright green forest, filled with color, now seemed gray. Still. Dead.
So slightly, so quietly, so unnoticeably and irrelevantly that no normal being
would ever notice, one of the gray-brown leaves unattached itself from the stem that held
it to the tree, and floated down.
Kyolize's body tensed, and his pupil darted towards the leaf. His eyes followed the leaf's
ever movement. When he felt it hit the ground to his left, he blinked, for the first time in
three nights. His luminescent blue eyes stayed closed.
Thunder cracked in the sky. Rain rushed down from the clouds.
Kyolize opened his eyes in time to see a streak of lighting light up the sky. A heavy wind
pushed his fur backwards and rushed through his ears. The storm sent adrenaline and pain
rushing through his entire body.
He stood to his paws and looked at the sky, trying to ignore the rain that pelted down and stung his wide eyes.
A few of the gray clouds parted, and the glowing crescent moon was in full view.
Lighting flashed in the sky again, and Kyolize fell to the ground, howling and writhing with pain.
Chapter Two
Light filtered through his eyelids.
He blinked in the morning's glow with sleepy eyes. He took a deep but shaky
breath of the humid air. His chest heaved.
He rose to his paws, stretching his painful, wounded legs. Flexing his shattered claws. His fur was torn. He was exhausted…
He remembered the night- about four nights ago- that he sensed the storm. His pack wished him well, and he left to the storm clearing. He lay there, ears pricked, eyes wide, for three nights.
The air was eerily still and quiet, when the leaf fell- the leaf that signaled the storm's presence.
And Kyolize lay there, the whole night, enduring the forest's pain…
*Kyolize..?* A voice called, snapping him out of his thoughts. He turned his head.
*Irasil!* He called happily. He planned to run to the beautiful lupe's side, (He thought she was beautiful, despite her odd appearance after she was captured by a scientist, and mutated with chemicals) but tripped because of his new limp.
*Be careful, mouse-for-brains!* She called, rushing to Kyolize's side.
*Sorry,* he groaned, getting back to his paws.
*Don't apologize!*
*Oh, sorry. Urr, I mean-*
*Save it,* Irasil growled, narrowing her eyes. *I'm just glad a limp is the worst injury you received…* Her voice broke off.
*I'm okay. It's okay.*
*For now….* Irasil added softly, her eyes filled with fear and sorrow.
*No, forever. Really, love.* His words were honest sounding, so honest that she almost believed them, until she saw the fear in his own eyes.
*If you say so,* she murmured, her voice filled with doubt. Let's get you back to the pack.*
Chapter Three
Long ago, the pack that are now generations old were only just beginning, when the lupe spirits echoed a prophecy into the ears of the Storm Pack leader's ears.
*a white-furred pup with blue markings will be born into Storm Pack,
generations from now.
A series of storms will erupt in the forest.
It will be up to the white lupe to feel the forest's pain.
If he fails to do so
The forest will die,
The packs will die,
And the land will become a land of storms.*
Chapter Four
He slept peacefully. The darkness was welcoming, with no rain, harsh wind, thunder or lighting. All was quiet, but not eerily so. There was still the distant sound of the stream, as water ran over smooth rocks, and the sound of crickets chirping rhythmically.
Outside the den, Irasil was talking to Amisen, the leader of Storm Pack.
*I'm so worried about Kyolize. There's got to be something we can do!* She was saying.
*I'm very sorry, Irasil,* Amisen said, *But there is not.*
*Yes there is! We can have him stop. He doesn't need to throw his life away!*
*He is not throwing his life away!* Amisen snarled, lashing his tail defensively. *He is giving his life to protect mine, yours, and everyone's else's.*
*Exactly!* Irasil howled.*We can't let him do that!*
*I'm afraid we have no choice.* he snapped, and sauntered off.
Irasil shook her head. Kyolize is the only lupe worthy of living, and he has to endure so much pain… Isn't there something that can be done? He's the only lupe who's ever cared about me. Ever thought I was beautiful, when in truth, I'm hideous. He doesn't deserve death, or any kind of pain.
Irasil took a deep breath. Is Kyolize the only lupe I care about?
Yes. Yes he is.
