Life Lessons I Learned on Neopets

You can earn anything you want

If you want it enough, that is. I've learned to budget my NPs, to set a savings goal, and to work hard to get what I want.

Don't go into debt.

Neopets doesn't allow it. Granted, in real life that's not always possible (credit cards and car payments), but I'm aiming for debt-free.

Play nice with others.

So what if my friends are virtual? They're still my friends.

Anything you learn can be a marketable job skill.

Making screenies and petpages are actually marketable skills. I've used both as a technical writer.

Budget your time and priorities.

I like playing Neopets, but I also have real-life things like work, family, and friends that take a higher priority. Some days, like Half-Price Day, it's harder to pull myself away, but I make myself leave.

Learn the Rules.

Whether it's an online game or inter-office emails, there are Rules. Whether it's "no contests" or "this person is very sensitive to perceived insults, so always proofread", there are Rules. And usually in the real world, no one will write them out for you.

Do what you love.

Strangely enough, working on Atablicryon's and Marchegai's petpages back when I didn't have a full-time job was what actually led me to my job. I realized that I really did like technical writing and copywriting.

Don't let rude or inconsiderate people ruin your day.

There are always rude and inconsiderate people. Don't let them bother you.

Don't be rude and inconsiderate.

I've found that often when I'm being nice, people will calm down and be more reasonable.

Brighten up your world.

You can't fix everything, but you can make a little bit better. Help people, smile, and do good.
