Genetics

Prologue

In biological sciences, the homo sapiens is the base model for all current members in the homo genus. The other members include:

homo albiz (elf)
homo fata (fairy)
homo lupus (werewolf)
homo striga (vampire)
homo daemonium (demon)

and a few other sub-species too obscure to mention.

Homo sapiens being the base is comparable to the way that the X chromosome is called the base of genetics; Y is merely a broken X. In some sense, it could be possible to say that these special branches of the homo genus are essentially further evolved members of the same species. Homo sapiens is the original species who have simultaneously evolved into different species and remained the same simultaneously.

The process of evolution into different species has been accelerated by various mutations, all of which seemed to have happened within a period of two millennia. Such speed of evolution has not been documented before, and all studies of extinct species of the homo genus show that their evolution happened over a much more substantial period, stretching for tens of thousands of years.

The cause for so many mutations within two millenniums is still debated, but is commonly attributed to the early development of nuclear power by the homo sapiens. Additionally, it must be noted that in a neighbouring solar system, there has been communications with the species named homo daemonium, and this species has officially adopted the classification of homo daemonium.

With the success of all five homo species creating families across species boundaries amongst other members of the same genus, many have seen this as proof that the demon is another species within the homo genus, and the classification homo daemonium is scientifically and evolutionarily correct. Futhermore, it is noted that homo daemonium shares a similar trait with homo sapiens, one of which is different skin and hair colours, which, like homo sapiens does not signify another species. The colouration of the skin and the hair are merely different appearances within the same species.

All five of the mentioned speices have longer life-spans than the human. The striga & lupus are essentially immortal (except for the hereditary type, explained later), while the albiz and fata live a long time. The demon is unique among these as this race has the choice of lengthening, stagnating/ immortalising or shortening their own life-span.

The subject of subspecies

There has been now, for many years, the disagreement between homo fata (fairy) and homo albiz (elf). Both these species regard each other as subspecies of their own, while professors of the biological sciences disagree upon whether they are indeed separate species or both subspecies of humans. What they have agreed upon, however, is that they are not subspecies of each other, yet the illusion of such continues to plague both the albiz and fata. Both of them have evolved in similar environments, with similar traits and similar habits. The main separation between the two species - they are termed as separate species for the purposes of this essay - is that the fata possesses wings and the albiz does not. However, fata can lose their wings through various circumstances, and are thus often mistaken for albiz, and vice versa.

Without wings, fata and albiz are extraordinarily difficult to identify. There are no biological differences, no obvious skeletal differences - a fata's wings are made from cartilage, not bone - that can tell them apart. The only difference between a wingless fata and an albiz are the two scars upon the shoulder blades which indicate where the wings previously were. However, this is a very minor physical difference, and it is usually unnoticeable if they are not exposed.

The theory that albiz and fata are subspecies of sapiens is not unreasonable. Out of the five mentioned species of hominids, albiz and fata are the most similar to sapiens in terms of appearance, biology and diet. By appearance, the only difference between albiz and sapiens is slightly more pointed ears; a fata may have the wings in addition. However, it is not a uncommon or difficult for the albiz to conceal the ears, and apart from that, no other immediate differences are noted. In terms of diet, both albiz and fata are vegans, but then so are some sapiens. By skeleton, however, one could possibly determine whether it is sapiens or albiz/ fata. One way is by testing how long the skeleton was active for, since albiz/ fata live much longer than humans. Another, more simpler but not always accurate, way is to check the teeth of the skeleton. Elves and fairies have evolved to have no canines due to their diet, though there is the small possibility that the skeleton is a sapiens with missing canines. Apart from that, there are no other differences, and to tell the difference between albiz and fata skeletons is highly difficult.

Yet, if they can be termed as a subspecies of sapiens, then so can homo striga and homo lupus, who themselves are classed as separate species. While they are more different than albiz and fata in terms of diet and appearance, their physiology is essentially the same. It is believed that a certain virus or bacteria makes striga and lupus different, and that the sapiens has combined with another life form and evolved together.

The linage of vampires and werewolves

As mentioned above, there is the existing theory that homo striga (vampire) and homo lupus (werewolf) have combined with another life form to evolve into another species in the homo genus. This is a feasible theory, but it seems to only be supported by professors who study singular striga/ lupus.

It is now suitable to introduce the two types of striga/ lupus: singular and hereditary. The terms apply to both species; singular means that the striga/ lupus was infected, usually bitten, and hereditary means that the subject in question has a familial aspect. It is still unknown, therefore, if hereditary striga and lupus are like singular ones who were first infected, then created a lineage, or have nothing to do with singulars.

The difference between singular and hereditary of both species is thus: singulars are imperishable in all cases, hereditaries merely live for a substantial amount time - relative to sapiens. There are also differences within the species. Singular lupus incessantly transform at a full moon, without personal discretion, while hereditary lupus can stay in their hominid, though they are still affected by the waning and waxes of the moon. Singular types, however, can avoid transformation at a full moon if underground or without contact from moonlight. Any contact with full moonlight induces immediate transformation, and it is lasting throughout the night of a full moon.

Additionally, singular lupus transform into a human-wolf form in appearance, while hereditary lupus can choose between the hominid form, or a wolf form, usually mimicking canis lupus lupus. The wolf form has no difference from a real wolf, and are often mistaken by humans as being canis lupus lupus. Furthermore, the singular lupus is created when a human is bitten by a heredital one; yet, not all humans become homo lupus when bitten. It seems to be the case, with some scientific proof, that humans who have some distant heredital homo lupus lineage are more likely to become the lupus species when bitten. However, it is also shown that humans with no amount of heredital lupus lineage can become werewolves, the chance of becoming one is merely more improbably. In addition, all singular homo lupus are sterile.

Between the two types of striga, the difference is more subtle. A hereditary striga's strength will accelerate much slower, though the peak of strength that the said striga will reach is often higher than a singular striga. The latter acquires super-human strength immediately after being infected, though strength frequently continues increase after the process. Biologically, a singular striga is essentially dead; they have no pulse, no breath, and no appetite. A hereditary striga is between two states; their hearts beat about one per minute (or less), and they can consume solid food, though it is not commonly practised.

Both types of striga consume blood from all species of the homo genus. Sapiens are the main comestibles, though striga have been known to prefer other species, and the preferred species/ blood type varies between individual striga. It is also evident that when striga feed on blood other than human, the effects are different. Albiz blood increases their health, though it is widely known that most striga find it unsavoury and unpalatable. Fata blood causes hallucinations, and in some cases induces pseudo-flight - more accurately floatation in the air. Daemonium blood causes emotional instabilities, commonly experienced are extreme elation, shame, dejection, paranoia, fear and guilt. Both types of striga cannot daywalk, reason being the infecting virus/ bacterium causes to striga to have no need for vitamin D, nor the ability to synthesise it. However, signular striga can walk out in severely overcast or rainy days, while hereditary striga cannot be physically out of a building, and most cannot rise unless the sun has set. Apart from immortality, there are no futher differences between the two types.

The separation of demons

The demon race is almost parallel to the other four main species of the homo genus. Since they were discovered in a neighbouring solar system, the demons are not native to Earth. However, many demons have made their homes on Earth, with integration at a high success rate, since this habitat is not dissimilar to their home planet, Gaia, While Gaia is commonly held as a term in human mythology, it is also part of demon traditional culture. Between Earth and Gaia exist an abnormally high amount of wormholes, and therefore much of the two cultures overlap, due to this indirect and subconscious effects of one culture to the other. As mentioned above, convergent evolution seems to be the answer as to why demons and humans look and behave so similar even though they are separated by lightyears.

Within the demon race, there are two separate and different functions: space and time. It said in Gaian folklore that demons are created as pairs, since many of the species find a partner of the opposite function and stay with them for a substantial amount of time, if not throughout their life span. Additionally, on Gaia, demons are the primary and only hominid race, like humans were on Earth until the discovery of Nuclear power. It is noted as well that on Gaia, nuclear power is not used because of the residents a further evolved sense of dimension and nature, hence many of the human inventions that needed such power, e.g. extra-terristial equipment, was and is not needed by the demon race.

There is another theory that demons are in reality more distantly related to humans, and should not be classed in the same genus, but to expand the classification to demons being in the same tribe or subfamily. Demons have a much more highly developed sense of space and time, to the extent where they function differently in the four dimensions which they, and humans also, inhabit. Demons are able to travel without foreign aid through space and time, depending on their individual functions, and thus pairings with the opposite function are essential for coherent space and time travel. Demons also do not follow a linear time line, and it is expressed by the demons that time and space are two sides of the same spiral. Time is confirmed to be a spiral shape, in contrast to Einstein's theory that time is linear, as if it were straight, it would be impossible for any life form to travel back in time, which has been proved possible. Space is theorised to be the other side of the spiral, since space and time are inter-linked within the fourth dimension.

Half daemonium/ sapien specimens have exhibited the same ability and functions of original demons. There are very little differences between a mixed and an original, but some of the more obvious ones are reduced sharpness of the ears and increased ability to hide demon-specific traits in mixes. Homo daemonium were termed as such because of some physical traits that were possessed by the race, notably a spiked tail for time functions and feathered wings for space functions, which seemed similar to demons in human folklore, and indeed, many now believe that such folklore was heavily influenced by demons passing through the many wormholes linking Earth and Gaia. The functions are seemingly random among the demon (and the demon mix) population. It was previously believed that gender was the defining, but not exclusive, factor (males linked to space function, female to time function), but it has been proved that the gender to function ratio fluctuates between generations. However, the notable separation is that time demons have the spiked tail, and space demons have the feathered wings.
