In Fruits Basket, all 13 animals were invited to a banquet. The rat told the cat it was the day after tomorrow instead tomorrow. The cat missed it because of the rat's deceiving lie. This is why, in the series, the cat is not part of the Zodiac. The Zodiac animals go by the year you were born, They are known as the Eastern Zodiac. the western Zodiac depends on the month. Since there are twelve animals... the cycle starts over again once the twelveth animal year has passed. This is the order they start in: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and then Boar.
A closer Look
Sohma's who are born with the Zodiac curse transform into an animal of the Chinese Zodiac when "Huggled" by the Opposite gender, or under alot of stress or have a fever or a cold of some sort. The time when they change back varies, and when they do they are Unclothed. This is the Sohma family secret, why the Sohma's? I don't know but that's how the story is. Though, Not all of the Sohma's know about this curse. The color of their hair is the color of the animals fur or scales when they transform... which is why normal people wonder about their hair color at times. Ones who are 'possed' are born earlier then normal babies. Having the curse, they can't interact with people... so any outsiders of their family or Zodiac... are not too welcome. It is a mystery how other Zodiac members can huggle, even when they are of the opposite gender, and not transform. They also can communicate with animals of their species... and seem to have their animal abilities.
