The shop smelled like all pawn shops, old and full of forgotten memories. Your hands glide over glass perfume bottles and quill pens that look like they have been used by many a hand.
Can I help you miss? An old lupe says as he watches you carefully from the corner of his eye. Ahh, so you are interested in music? You try to explain that you did not mean to pick up the music box, and as much as you want to assure him you don't want to buy it there is a warmth in the box. A life force that makes you want to own it for yourself.
I would not if I were you? The last girl that owned that, there box, vanished.
Vanished? You say as you quickly put the box down, fearing it might have cursed you.
Yep, she up and vanished one day. Poof!He waves his hands to show you exactly what he means.
However, some say she ran away from home. But I knew Miss. Kitrenna if their was one thing she loved it was that box. So I think either the Underworld took her or she vanished.

Preface
The cool winter air brushed over her shoulders as she tired to make sense of what had just happened. Her body felt weightless and sort of free. I guess, I am jumping a head of myself, my story actually takes place way before are main character was born, way up in the council of the gods.Way up in the heavens live the immortals, each with their own specific trait. There's Articoal, the King of the Gods, and the ruler of the Sun. Next to him is his sweet daughter June, the Goddess of Spring, and then the girl Articoal wishes to make his bride, Hiazel, the Lunar Goddess. Then there are the two brothers Time and Death, but they go by many names. These include but are not limited to Father Time, Grim Reaper, Hades, Rip Van Winkle, and many others. However to the privileged few they are called Arth and Zeshor. They each have a child they look after, Cuel and Vuk are the sons of Zeshor; and Arth has Kosma a little witch from the dark side of he moon from the town of Ra-Linga.
Like all gods they can change their shape. The most common form is that of a child and that is how Arth came to greet Evalin. Duchess Evalin, was a beautiful rabbit but a foolish one, as are most females of her kind. She believed that all that glittered and sparkled was worth more than life its self. I guess it is kind of humorous to think the God of Time came to her in the form of a pickpocket.
It was a night much like this that he came knocking on her door. She, being wealthy, did not answer the door ever but something possessed her to do so that night. The moment her hand touched the doorknob she was under his spell. He walked in with an air of confidence and power seducing her and all around him. His crystal blue eyes wandered around the room and fixated on Evalin. At this time Evalin was engaged to be with a dashing rabbit from one of the distant isles, and he to was filthy rich, which was all that mattered to her.
Oh please miss. I am freezing. Could you spare a piece of coal from your fire. The rest of the people of the house eyed the strange boy. He was in a black cloak and even though he appeared poor there was a richness in his voice.
Quickly she snapped her fingers for a cup of tea to be brought at once for the boy as well as a satchel of coal. On getting the tea the child's eyes gleamed with excitement and trickery. Oh this is too kind of you, I must pay you some day for your hospitality. He mumbled over the tea cup.
Rubies and gems and diamonds began to spin in Evalin's head along with the sound of gold coins rattling in a cloth satchel, but the boy pull out none of these such things. Instead he placed on the coffee table an old broken porcelain music box. This is all I have to offer. I know it is not much but it can play the most beautiful melody. I made it myself. The child said sweetly while his eyes moved around the room waiting, and watching for something or someone. Evalin took out a handkerchief and picked up the ratty music box, she was greatly disappointed. Yet, had she looked closer she would have seen gems of many shapes and sizes decorating the boxes lid, but they were covered in dirt and grime.
Oh, thank you. She said in a annoyed manner but the boy just smiled and sipped his tea. His plans were coming together nicely; all he needed now was one more actor for his little play.
Around that time a knock at the door startled everyone and in walked The Duke Charles of Mast, an Island off the coast of Canton. On seeing this strange dirty child sitting by Evalin he was disgusted. Small china tea cups lay shattered on the floor as he reached over roughly for the child, who quickly tried to dodge my his fist. Yet once Charles had manage to get hold of the boy he landed a hard set of wraps on his head, showing who was really in control here.
A little hurt and battered the boy walked over to the door but that air of confidence never left him. Before exiting the house he looked down at Charles, who was now sitting by Evalin. I hope you learn to control your temper. Hitting a boy is one thing but a girl is another.
What did you say. Charles undid the gun at his side, only to startle the lad but his finger was sort of ready to pull the trigger. Yet, the boy ignored him, he was now honing in on Evalin.
Because you were kind enough to invite me into your home, your first born will be more beautiful then you. Golden locks of hair will caress her cheeks and bright blue eyes like sapphires will sparkle at all. She will sing like an angel but because not all can be given to her, since she is mortal, she will go looking for trouble. Remember that my dear Evalin He said with a twinkle in his eye. Heed my warning for if you don't she may one day fall down into a dark world not even you can bring her back from. A shiver went through Evalin as the boy bowed his head and began to walk out the door. All the while he sang an eerie little tune.
Out to the meadow for some fun!
Laugh and play while you can for the wolves are prowling the land.
Little lost lamb were are thee now?
Buried deep under the ground.
I told you lamb not to run.
You should have listened for being dead is no fun.
She was nothing but a ball of fur with a small tuff of blonde hair atop her head, but to Evalin, Kitrenna was her world. All the things she had once found dear did not even compare to her Kitrenna. People came from all around to see the baby, for like the boy had promised she was beautiful and the moment her mouth could utter words they were smooth and perfect just like her singing voice. She was so above all the other children that many would not play with her.
She spent her days wandering around their big house almost in a daze, confused and frustrated that the other children wanted nothing to do with her. Every time she would pass a mirror a shiver would go down her back. Her face was like a porcelain doll, cold and lifeless and her eyes seemed dull. How could anyone think she was pretty? She thought.
Then one day when Evalin was out Katrinna went into the master bedroom. She loved to stand up at her mothers vanity and look at all the odds and ends. Elegantly blown glass perfume bottles that smelled of rosemary and lavender decorated the left hand side of the counter top, while rose colored powders where on the right. Reaching ever so carefully she squeezed down on the perfume, but being young her hand slipped causing a cloud of rosemary to engulf her. She covered her mouth and wheezed as she fell back on the floor. Suddenly her hands hit something cold under her parents bed. She blinked her eyes for tears had started to form, since the perfume was too much for her.
Bending down she reached under the bed and pulled out a small wooden box. It looked sort of like a coffin. She recalled her pet faellie had gone missing not long ago, was it possible that it was in the box. She felt a chill run down her back as she question wither she should open it or not. But being a little girl she could not take waiting much longer. Carefully she began to undo the lid and what was inside was not an animal but what looked to be a music box. It was covered with dirt and grime. She tired to remove some of the crusted grime off with her hands. Then she searched the wooden box until she found a small key. It had a ruby on it and she thought it looked more like a charm then a key for a ratty music box.
The box shook a little as she forced the key into the lock but it did not fight her. The music was sweet and refreshing to her ears, and sitting up tall and upright was a little boy. He had small black eyes and he was wearing a purple tunic with a golden cravat. He spun around gently in the safety of his box and smile up at Kitrenna, as if he realized it was she who had brought him back to life.
Kitrenna laid on my mother's bedroom floor for hours turning the key and listening to all the little cogs mesh together and play just for her. Her little prince would spin around on his pedestal with his hand out stretched, as if asking her for a dance. Holding the box in her hands she danced around the room, dreaming of what it would feel like to have someone like her little prince dance with her.
When Evalin came home she found her daughter sitting on her bed. Her feet were kicking merrily to the beat of the music boxes song. However, Evalin had forgotten all about the boys warning and closed her daughter's bedroom door, believing all was well.
And this is where our story begins.
Chapter 1
Resting her head on the counter Kitrenna turned the key to the music box, it was pointless, it had stopped playing for her. Furthermore, no matter where she took it all the clock smiths said the same. I am sorry Miss. Kitrenna, but I don't have the tools to fix it. I have never even seen cogs like these before. Are you sure it came from my shop?
Each time Kitrenna would hope and wish that what her mother had said about it being a present from some far off island was not true. She wanted so desperately for the clock smith to look at it and say. Oh, yes, I made that years ago. Where in the world did you find it? But those words never came out.
Gently she opened the box and touched the prince, he seemed to have a sadness in his eyes as well. For it had been two weeks since he had last danced for her.
Carefully Kitrenna gathered up the music box and headed out the door. There was nothing left to do. That was what all the clock smiths and toy makers had said to her. For now she would call it a day and get a spot of tea at Ladies, a small café that had the best scones on the whole island. Maybe something sweet would nub her disappointment.
We'll that be all Lady Kitrenna? The waitress said as Kitrenna nodded her head. She was happy she was able to get a window seat and even more so to be alone. Being only 9 years old she was sure her mother would say no to letting her see the clock smith again. But, today when Evalin took her daughter dress shopping she placed a silver piece in her hand and told her to enjoy herself. Get a spot of tea and I will see you at the café once I finish up here. Her mother's words rang in her head as she sipped her tea.
It was a busy Sunday and all the people were moving around like colorful bees outside in the crisp morning air. Sighing Kitrenna looked at the clock on the wall, noticing Mother was very late. Enough was a enough, and so she paid the waitress and headed outside. She would sit at the fountain and wait for Mother there. But the moment she opened the door to the café she suddenly found herself down on the ground.
Kosma watch were you are going? I'm sorry she never pays attention. Say, you are sorry. Kitrenna tried to dust herself off but was still pretty shaken from landing rather painfully on her bottom.
Here allow me. She felt two small hands pull her up as she steadied herself. Apologize Kitrenna held her arm as she looked down to see a small meerca girl. She was in a red dress and atop her head was a red bow which was pulling back her black hair. Yet, the oddest thing was the knee high red boots and black cloak she had around her. What in the world was she and were had she gotten a bazaar outfit such as this?
Stop pushing Master. Kosma said as she crossed her arms. She started to mumbled something that sounded like, "Well I thought we were the only ones in the town today." Kitrenna was sure she had miss heard her, but Kosma bowed her head quickly and then she hurried behind the boy standing by her.
I am very sorry she is only 10 so she does not understand proper behavior. What brings you to the Isle of Canton? I was sure we were the only ones here today.
Excuse me, but there are tons of people here, are there not? Kitrenna felt an heir of confidence ripple through her. Here she was a year younger then this child and even she knew how to behave better.
Ha ha are you metal or something. Yes there are a lot of people here but only…. But Kosma stopped talking, for the boy had placed a firm hand on her shoulder when he noticed Evalin walking over to them.
Kitrenna dear its time to head home.
Yes Mama. Kitrenna said quickly as she put her nose in the air, for she had had enough of these childish games. Yet, just as she was about to walk away she felt a hand grab her arm.
You dropped this. Kitrenna pulled her arm back quickly causing Evalin to walk over, since she had never seen her daughter act in such a manor. Quickly Kitrenna snatched the music box from the boy and rushed towards her mother.
Kitrenna are you alright?Evalin said as she placed a hand on her daughters head. I have never seen you behave like that before.
What do you mean Mother? Kitrenna clutched the music box. Even after all she had done it still would not play.
Well dear you were swinging your arms around wildly as if you were caught on something. Kitrenna blinked a few times and gave her mother a puzzled look.
But, I was. That boy grabbed my arm. On hearing this Evalin turn and looked at her daughter with concern and said.
What boy? There was nothing there.
That night Kitrenna felt ill. Her head was not in the right place and her father was furious to hear she had lied to her mother. She was ordered to lay in bed with a wet wash cloth on her head and not move until her sanity had returned. Yet, try as she might her brain could not wrap around her mothers words. She had pointed and stomped her foot and even yelled but no matter what her mother could not see them. Was she mad? Yet, not far from her home another child was having the same thought.
But how?
I don't know.
It's impossible.
Maybe?
What do you mean by maybe?
Kosma, please stop talking. Arth was trying to understand what on earth had happened that day. How had she been able to see them and further more have Kosma run right into her? None of it made any sense. He would have to go and see this girl again if he was ever wanted be able to understand the situation.
Chapter 2
Stretching her arms Kitrenna sipped her milk silently at the table.
Kitrenna darling why don't you go outside and play with Lilly. I am sure she is tired of you ignoring her. Evalin said as she added a few more lumps of sugar to her tea. Kitrenna looked at her mother over her cup. Standing up she called to Lilly, her pet faellie, who chased after her as Kitrenna open the front door to let her out.
Charles we must do something about Kitrenna.
Yes dear. Said Charles, as he folded the newspaper and called for the butler to bring him his coat and hat.
Charles are you listening to me? Evalin said, annoyed that the paper seemed more important to Charles over their own daughter's well being.
Yes dear.
It is not right for a girl her age to be so upset over that toy and now she lying. Please listen to me when I am talking to you. Evalin said, as she hit the table lightly, to catch Charles attention.
Evalin, she is fine. He said put out about being hassled this early in the morning. Henry where is my hat!
Coming sir. Said the butler as Charles bent down to pick up the paper, closing the matter as he always did unfinished.
Outside in the garden Kitrenna walked around in the sun shine calling for Lilly to follow her.Come Lilly. Kitrenna watched her little pet dig her nose into the ground as she started to pull up the newly planted flowers. Kitrenna giggled as she threw a rock and hopped on her newly made hop-scotch. After the rock hit the three she took off jumping on one foot as she let an old sea tune pour from her lips.
Bread and tea and milk and wine, oh our ladies are so fine
Come dear sirs from beyond the isles and sing and dance and smile
Watch the sun come up and down as you drink in our sleepy town
Oh the waves how they quake for the young girls cry for your sake
For you know young girls that cry are pretty hard on the eye.
Kitrenna turned on her heals on hearing another voice singing with her.
Oh, did I frighten you? The boy said as he leaned on the fence, causing it to creak a little, as Kosma jumped out behind him.
You! Kitrenna shouted as she fell back shocked and partly afraid.
Kitrenna are you out here? Charles, called out as he looked around while he placed his hat on his head. Yet, he stopped when he saw his daughter on the ground shaking.
Father! Kitrenna cried as she quickly got up and hurried behind him. Charles was more annoyed then anything and quickly pushed her away.
Stop this foolishness right now. I have work to do. But no matter what she did her father would not listen. Aggravated that she was acting so strangely he took her by the arm and ordered her to stay inside for the rest of the day. He dare not let the neighbors see her in this state.
Yet, when she looked out the window she saw Kosma was petting and playing with Lilly in their front yard. Lilly was hopping up and down with excitement. Kitrenna want to scream get away from my faellie but no sooner had she opened her mouth Kosma looked up from petting Lilly and wagged a finger a her. Kitrenna had never felt so agitated in her whole life. She begged her father to let her go out but he was not going to hear of it.
She sighed and just looked out the window but this time there was nothing there? No strange girl and no Lilly. From further investigation Kitrenna noticed that the gate was open. She had just about had enough of this. She was going to at least get Lilly back and then maybe she would be done with these figments from her imagination.
Kitrenna watched waiting for Charles to round the bend, making it impossible for him to see her. Then carefully she turned the handle, so as not to catch the attention of the other servants of the house and walked outside. Shutting the door silently behind her she called for Lilly but knew she was long gone.
Quickly she unlatched the gate and ran down the street calling for her missing pet. After hours of passing the same houses in her frantic search she collapsed by the fountain in town. The night air was slowly coming and soon the watchman would be out lighting the candles in the street lamps, it was time to go home. She had clearly not thought this out.
You better hurry or Papa is going to be strict with you.
Kitrenna about fell over into the fountain. Standing right in front her, swishing her tail back and forth was Kosma. Her golden yellow eyes glisten in the faint sunlight of the setting sun. That's what you are thinking right? Her ears twitched with excitement at Kitrenna's horrified face. Then she turned on her heels and took off down the street.
She was unsure what compelled her to do it but before she could stop herself she was racing after Kosma. Her shoes made a rhythmic beat on the cobbled stone streets as if echoing to her, why why why? It was a question that was racing through her mind as she ran.
Down deeper and further she went until the darkness had almost surrounded her completely and just when she was sure her legs could go no further she heard the sound of Lilly's bark, it was faint but she knew it was her. Gathering up the rest of her strength she rushed in the direction of the bark until at long last she caught a glimpse of her missing pet. She was barking on her hind legs joyfully as a boy played a tune on his violin, neither of them noticed Kitrenna.
Kitrenna stood their motionless out of fear and from sheer exhaustion. As she tried to catch her breath she listen and was sure she had heard this tune somewhere before. The way the notes were arranged as they went up and down brought the smell of rosemary up her nose. Covering her mouth she pressed her back up against the wall to steady herself, it was the tune from her music box. It was the first time she had ever heard anyone play it before. She had gone to so many sheet music shops and not one had, had music for it, it was like it had fallen out of the sky. Shaking her head and washing it from her mind she called for Lilly.
Lilly! The little faellie stopped and looked towards her master and ran at full pace to greet her. Lilly, you silly thing where have you been? Kitrenna sighed as Lilly jumped up and licked her face.
Sorry, she must have followed me out. The boy said as he stood over Kitrenna. Kitrenna looked up and could not believe it, it was the same kougra lad from this morning.
Who are you? Kitrenna demanded as she picked up Lilly, she had had enough of this game. The boy took a few steps towards her and smiled a cocky grin.
Do you really wish to know? Kitrenna backed away now not so sure anymore.
Yes, I wish to know! Why in the world would I ask you if I did not? Kitrenna whined out as she felt something behind her, she knew it was that little demon Kosma.
Very well, I will tell you.
No master! Kosma shouted as she ran past Kitrenna and pulled on the boys arm.
I am no one. I go by many names but you may call me Thomas.
What do you mean you are no one? Kitrenna was greatly confused and even more so by Kosma's reaction. However, after Thomas said his name Kosma said nothing. She just stood by his side with a creepy little grin on her face.
I will explain it all to you one day but I think it is best for you to be getting home. I will be happy to talk to you on the way. Kitrenna nodded, still uneasy about who these children really were. On the way they talked of many things, life, Kitrenna's future, and her pretty singing voice. But, not once did Thomas reveal anything about his past or his family and when she tried to push the matter on how she was the only one that could see them he just passed over it as if she had said nothing. He sure was bothersome.
On reaching the gate to her house Thomas opened it for her and said good night.
Do you live around here Thomas? Kitrenna said nervously as she walked into the yard.
I live here and there, but if you need me I will be around.
His words made her feel uneasy and even as she left him in the dark night she was sure they would meet again even if she did want to.
Chapter 3
As the months went by Thomas and Kosma would appear at her gate. She could not understand why only she could see them and over time she just learned to accept it. She had been alone all her life and now these two random children had walked into it. However, strange and bazaar things were she started to welcome their visits, but she made sure never to speak to them unless no one was around. Even if she could see them her parents and the servants could not. She did not want anyone to think she was mad. Oh, maybe I can fix it. Thomas said he threw a stick to Lilly, who chased after it only to be distracted by Kosma's tail.
Hey stop that! Kitrenna laughed as Kosma raced around the yard trying to defend herself from Lilly's barks and yaps. Well, at least Lilly could see them, which made Kitrenna feel like she was less insane.
Wait right here. Kitrenna said as she hopped off towards the house and rushed up to her room to picked up the box. Thomas and Kosma were just as odd as he music box so maybe he could fix it. Oddly enough since they had shown up she had not cried about her broken toy, she wondered why that was.
Its about time? Kosma said as she hissed at Lilly causing the faellie to take off into the bushes.
I know.
How long did you want to visit with this girl? We have things to do and places to go, you are not some average boy out gallivanting the countryside. Kosma said as she whipped out a paint brush from her sleeve. Her movements were fluid and graceful as she painted a star in mid air and then blew it at Thomas. It floated and swirled around him. He caught it and crushed it in his fist. Kosma was right, he missed the clouds and the volumes of books that were in the Library of Forgotten Secrets. He needed to get home, also how long would his brother really let him go on with this charade. He was sure he had seen the shadows moving in on Kitrenna, it was only a matter of time before his playmate was dead. Before that happened he had to get the music box back and fix it.
When Kitrenna returned Thomas was petting Lilly on the head and Kosma had vanished off somewhere. Here it is. I have taken it to every clock smith in the area, and not one can make it play for me again. Kitrenna said as she sat down next to Thomas. The sun was shinning on his fur and giving it a golden look. She wondered why she had not noticed how handsome he was. He was actually quiet breath taking. Thinking like this was making her cheeks flush, she needed to quickly gain some composure. She steadied her attention on the music box instead.
My you sure have played it a lot. Thomas said as he examined the box. Gently he removed the bottom and looked at all the cogs. Taking his fingers he poked around and then started to laugh. His eyes twinkled at her as he closed the lid and handed it back to her. Try it now. He said with a cocky look at Kitrenna, who was still not completely herself.
But you did not do anything. Kitrenna mumbled.
Sometimes all it needs is for a certain someone to come along that understands it, for it to sing again. Kitrenna's heart was now racing. She gulped as she took the box from him and carefully lifted it open. Her mind was a blur after that for as she waited she watched Thomas. He really was like her own personal prince. Suddenly as if by magic the little box began to shake as the prince inside turned around on his pedestal and began to play his merry little tune. Kitrenna was quickly brought back to reality . She could not believe it, he had just fixed her most prized possession.
You fixed it!
Not really, it just needed someone special to listen to it. Have you not been paying it attention? He almost wanted to scream his excitement, he had won his brothers bet. It was a simple trick nothing too hard, make a toy and see if once it was broken that the mortal would put the pieces together and ask for him to fix it. He had won, at long last he had…
But before he could finish Kitrenna lend over and rested her head on his shoulder. She felt his body tighten from her weight but he did not push her off. How had she not realized it? Was she lying to herself? Suddenly she felt his hand on her shoulder and all the questions vanished from her mind.
Thomas will you always come and see me?i Kitrenna said.
If you want me to. His voice shook. No, please don't Kitrenna it was all that traveled though this mind.
Even when I am old?
Well that depends. How old are we talking? Don't, don't say it. His head was spinning as Kitrenna covered her mouth trying to suppress a laugh.
When I am 100 years old and have gray hair and bags under my eyes.
I don't know about that. Please don't the game was over.
But you will be old too. The moment the words were uttered she knew something was wrong. She felt him push her off and adjust his collar. She watched as he stood up and headed towards the gate. Her mind was spinning what had she said that was so wrong? She rushed towards him and grabbed his arm. Tell me! Tell me Thomas what I did? Why are you mad?
I'm not. That's right Kitrenna let me go.
Yes you are.
No Kitrenna I am not! His voice shook through her as she stumbled back. Her fingers unhooked from his arm. That a girl, you don't like me, you don't want to see me. You realize… but before Thomas could finish his thought Kitrenna put her arms around him and whispered in his ear. I guess in the end it does not matter since father has already given me away to another. Thomas tightened in her arms and turned to face her.
What did you say?It does not bother me. Let it go, you have to.
Oh just that I will be leaving this Island in a weeks time. So I guess in the end our friendship has to end. Thomas said nothing as she released him and walked around the yard almost singing her words. Father says he is very wealthy and comes from a good family. A fitting man for a duchess, but its not like it matters what I think. I will just be a pretty face for him to gaze upon. A little lady to hang on a pedestal and play with whenever he wants. A doll. Kitrenna started to laugh. Yes, I will become a stupid mindless singing doll. Does that not sound wonderful.
Be quiet Kitrenna. He was begging for her to stop.
What do you think Thomas. Should I curtsy when I see him?
I said be quiet. Please stop.
Oh and should I sing him a song. Father thinks an old Nor lullaby might be good…
Hush. I have to let her talk like this. I have to.
I was thinking something more original.
Stop it. Don't let her upset you.
Oh, I know why don't you teach me the words to the song in the music box. I know you know how to play it, are there words?
I said be quiet! But Thomas did not give her a chance to finish for he took her into his arms. Kitrenna felt hot tears roll down her cheeks as she cried. It was the first time she had spoke in such a manor and the horror of what her life was going to be like made her sick.
Please don't ever speak like that again. Even if you are old I will visit you. Even if you are gray headed I will come back for you. So please don't say things like that in my presence ever again. His words made her tears not stop and soon everything was a blur.
When she came to she was sitting on the porch and her father was coming up the path. She sniffed back her tears and wiped her eyes. Where had they gone? She looked around confused and hurt until she saw the music box sitting next to her. She picked it up and held it in her hands, but it did not bring the same comfort to her as it once had.
Are you still playing with that useless toy? Charles said as he walked up the steps to the house.
Kitrenna just smiled as she opened it and heard the tune. Yes, but I wont have much interest for it soon.
Not far from were he had left her Thomas was pacing back and forth talking to himself. I was so close. I was winning, the game was set the contest over, Why! I told myself this would not happen, I promised myself! Even when Zeshor told me I would I said it would not. Oh, no, what have I done? Thomas yelled as he walked around in circles.
Master Arth! Thomas turned around and looked at Kosma perched up in a tree. Her purple and white strips on her tail and face danced in the darkness, giving her an almost Alice and Wonderland Cheshire Cat feel, while small stars glided around her. She blew one down to Arth. It circled around him as she spoke.Well, well well, looks like you have gotten yourself into a fine mess, and here I thought we were done. Zeshor put that stupid but on the end of the contest for this reason alone.
Thomas glared as he watched her slither over to him.
How did the rhyme go again?
Let it play with a mortals soul
Every time the key is turned a little more of her is burned.
Pick your player, carefully, for if she falls for you a looser is all you will be.
Her words made him sick. He hated that rhyme and knew the last line was going to cost him his first win against his brother. How was Zeshor so good at these games?
Calm down Arth there is no need for you to get so upset. Your the King of Time, the Devils brother, are you really going to let him beat you again? Think it through Master there is always a loop hole, and you are the King of those.
Her twisted ways of thinking always impressed Arth and now he was going to have to think like her if he wanted to win.
Furthermore, what is up with this mortal name. Thomas. Certainly, you do not plan on keeping it. It is so primitive. Arthur would have worked much better. Kosma giggled.
Ok, how would you fix things? Kosma wrapped her arms around Arth and whispered in his ear.
I thought you would never ask.
Thomas? Thomas are you out here?
Awe looks like she just cant keep her hands off you Master
Get out of here Kosma prepare what is needed.
Kosma smiled at Arth with excitement as she darted off into the night. Thomas could now see Kitrenna getting closer.
Kitrenna? Yes, he could do it. He could use this loop hole and fix everything. There was no doubt about it he would leave Kitrenna and find another mortal to play with? He just had to keep his heart balanced and everything would be alright.
Why did you leave me like that. Kitrenna said playfully and nervously, she still was unsure what have compelled her to come find him.
Kitrenna. I have something to tell you. That's right Arth you can do this, trick her just like all the others. After I tell this to you it is up to you to decide what you want out of your life.
Kitrenna took a step back, this did not sound like the Thomas she knew, this was someone else. What do you mean my choice in life?
Thomas looked around to make sure no one was listening but he knew Kosma was close by. Just hear me out, don't interrupt. Kitrenna, I have to go home.
Kitrenna felt a pain in her chest. Somewhere inside she knew Thomas was a visitor but she had hoped it was not true.
You see, I am not from here, from this isle.
Then where are you from? She almost did not want to know. What if he said he lived in Evoi. He did have golden tan fur and lots of people in that far away desert Isle were like that.
You see I don't exsist, I never did. Neither did Kosma, we are all in your head. You made us up. He cleared his throat. It was over, there was no way she could fall for….
I don't care! Did you really think I did not already know that. For over a month I have wrestled with the idea I created you and honestly I don't care. I care for you and Kosma. I want us to always be together. Even if others can't see you. Honestly, I like it that way because then no one can steal you from me.
What? Thomas almost swallowed his tongue. Had he just heard her right? No mortal was that stupid. He suddenly felt her arms around him.
Please don't leave me. I can't live without you or Kosma. You are the only friends I have ever had. I love you.
Arth felt his chest tighten. They were cursed words, painful words. Words that could force a god to do terrible things. He had heard them only once before and that time had caused his baby sister to vanish from Novela.
No! You don't, you think you do but you cant! He had to get control of the situation. Why would you want to be with nothing more then a ghost?
Kitrenna looked up at him her eyes unwavering. Because I care for you, and will never care for another like I do with you.
He had to think. He had to make her hate him. What if I told you I am real and that the reason your life is so painful and you feel like the world is always crashing down on you is because I made it so. He let an evil grin over take his face. I cursed you!
Kitrenna took a step back from him as he continued. I crawled into your world before you were born I made that music box for you but only to take your soul. I am a demon and Kosma is my servant. Did you really never find it odd that she always called me Master around you? He could tell his words were effecting her and he could not decided if he was ok with it.
Why are you telling me this? Kitrenna said as she started to feel sick.
Because, I cant lie to you any more. Seeing your stupid face is driving me nuts. Don't you get it, I used you. He gulped out, there was no going back now.
What? No.
Yes you dimwitted mortal. Are friendship was nothing but a ruse so I could take your soul. Get it now. He wanted her to cry. To say something anything to prove her feelings for him were gone but she just stood there. He was loosing his mind. Then suddenly she turned as she slapped him in the face.
Don't you ever speak to me like that again! I don't care if you are demon or if you cursed my life, my life is my life and I wont let the months of friendship I had with you mean nothing. I don't care! She threw her arms around him and this time he knew it was over. He collapsed to the ground tired and almost entranced by this girl.
How did you know? He sigh, knowing the game was over and he was the looser. She looked up at him and smiled.
Because, I love you.
Just as those words were uttered the winds began to pick up and leaves began to fly around like mad. Kosma suddenly appeared shaking with fear as she hopped behind Thomas, He's here.
Zeshor are you out there? Thomas said as he held Kitrenna.
Well, looks like once again my baby brother just cant seem to get it right. How many wins is that now, three or was it four? You know math was never my strong suit.
Kitrenna looked to see dark black clouds surround a dark faced kougra. He was completely in shadow and only his golden eyes glistened through the darkness. He looked just like Thomas but black, the darkest black she had ever seen. He was dressed in clothes just like Thomas's but they were red, a burnt red with gold embroidery on them. Hiding behind his massive yellow and red leathery wings was a little boy kougra, he was purple and he had bright blue eyes and white silver hair.
Suddenly Kitrenna felt something brake inside of her just by being in their presence. As if she were a clock that had been wound too tightly .
Thomas, I… don't feel right. Her body felt weak and limp as if she were a puppet and her strings had been cut but Thomas paid her no attention for he was almost in a trance for Zeshor was walking over to him.
At least no one can say you have bad taste. She is a right pretty mortal. Kitrenna looked up at Zeshor with confusion. Oh I see, you tried to protect her, well that is just too bad brother/ Zeshor quickly reached out his hand and began to wave it around in the air. The music box quickly appeared glowing a strange blue, like fox fire.
Wait brother.
You can't be serious. Honestly, are you really going to be that way. My banks are low I need souls to feed my Nightmare Children. Kitrenna felt paralyzed as she watched a blue floating orb emerge from her body. Was that her soul?
No, stop! Suddenly Thomas hit Zeshor causing the soul to fly back into Kitrenna with such force is caused her to sit up.
Oh, so that is how you want to play. Zeshor snapped his fingers as Thomas noticed a shadow was creeping behind Kosma. Cuel, Zeshor's son, had his hands about her neck.
No! I wont let you have her. Thomas screamed as he prepared to fight Cuel off, but the weight of Kitrenna in his arms put a burden on him. He would have to make a choice, his adopted sister or his friend. Suddenly he was shot back to reality when he felt the crows were starting to circle around him and Kitrenna. They were the soul carrying birds, he was running out of time. The truth of the matter was Kitrenna was already out of time. Her soul had all but vanished and was being held in the music box, but Kosma was alive. And yet, Kitrenna said those three forbidden words. Those words that bound his soul and would make gods do reckless things. There was only one thing left to, the loop hole to all loop holes . He held Kitrenna tightly in his arms as he looked up at Kosma. Kosma, I know I promised I would take care of you but ...
What do you mean Master? She squeaked out as she tried to undo Cuels grip from around her neck.
Thomas felt angry tears well up in his eyes as he tried to speak. He looked down at Kitrenna and said Sing. Sing Kitrenna on every Isle you can reach. Travel the world, and leave home. You know it is the only thing you have always wanted. Search me out and keep your ear craned to the heavens so that one day you will hear the familiar tune of my violin Kitrenna looked up at him with confusion but the urgency in his trembling voice told her something was about to happen. She quickly nodded her head and put her hand on his cheek.
I will, I promise. Then he carefully leaned in and whispered in her ear.
With this I unbound you from a mortals life. I grant you the one thing all mortals yearn for a chance to be free. I give you the one thing that I hold dear my true name. "Arth.
Kitrenna could hardly speak for she felt something well up inside her. It was a feeling of such freedom and rebirth that she was sure she had just emerged into this world. She was alive, but changed. She looked at her hands as if could they really be her own, but when she looked up at Arth she could see something was wrong. He looked thin, no, he looked hollow. He could see the concern in her eyes but he just shook his head.
A god lives forever, and death is never something we must fear. And now, you wont either. And with that Thomas looked up at Kosma and mouthed, I'm sorry. Then before his brother or Cuel could stop him he began to vanished. He wore a smile on his face as his brother who was in such shock could hardly comprehend what Arth had just done. Cuel was so confused that he lost control of Kosma who went racing after Arth.
Stop Arth! What are you doing? Kosma was screaming and running towards him hoping to catch his soul in time but he just gave her a cocky grin, the one he had shown her the day they had first met. The smile that had melted her heart and stopped her tears, the one that made her feel that he was much more then a brother to her. And then he was gone.
Kitrenna watched in horror as Arth fluttered off to a place she could never reach. As Kosma pounded her fists into the ground. You fool! How could you? What about your promise to take care of me? Kosma was on the ground crying as Zeshor tired to lean in and put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
Don't cry Kosma. But before he could move she slapped him across the face.
If you think I will ever let you touch me, you are dead wrong! Be you a god or a mortal you are nothing but a monster to me.
Zeshor said nothing as she continued. You knew he wanted to win. You knew he just wanted to beat you once. We stayed in this godforsaken place for almost a year trying to win her over. But no you just could not let him. Tears were streaming down her face. Cuel scurried behind Zeshor, almost a little afraid of what this pint sized witch would do.
Your wrong Kosma. Zeshor said as he kneeled down to her level. A game is a game to us gods. Be we winners or losers the end result does not matter. We only wish to play. If he had wanted to win, he would have stolen the box. But we are too interested in matters of the heart. The ending result was he care for her as much as she for him and that is why you are angry. Carefully he stood up as he looked down at Kosma. He was almost proud of his brother for he honestly had never considered Arth to do something so reckless and could not help by smile at his creativity. Arth had put him in quite a bind, how would he ever explain that he had forced his brother into such a corner as to choose reincarnation. Then his attention focused on Kitrenna.
Clever brother. So he gave you his name. Funny thing is when you give a mortal your name you turn them immortal. Guess, he never wants you to age a day from the last time he saw you. Enjoy being a child forever. He laughed, at how Arth had not only ended the game but all games for that coming year. He pulled out a sheet of paper and threw it to the wind. Guess I wont be needing this. Kosma reached out an caught it as she stood up straight and looked at him dead in the eyes. He will be back, you will see! I will find him and bring him home. The God of Time will rise again. Arth will come back! Kosma said as she cried angry vengeful tears.
I have no doubt of that my dear Kosma. He is most likely being born somewhere as we speak. The question is who will find him first you or her? Kosma glared at Kitrenna who was now getting up and looking at the sky. Her hands out stretched as if trying to catch the hand of the only boy she had ever cared for. Finally the realization that she may never see him again brought her to her knees. She felt tears role down her face. She turned to face Kosma, Zeshor and Cuel. They seemed to be in their own world and she now was not even apart of the world she had once called home.
Ha, I am a witch. Magic will always win!
Care to make a game of it, for old time sake? Cuel said as he played with a back whistle around his neck. A trophy from the last game Zeshor and Arth had played. It would have been wise for her to have said no but she was annoyed and bitter.
Sure, I bet I will find Arth before Kitrenna and not only that I will make it so that he never sees her again. Kosma said as she turned on her heels to leave.
Not so fast, we need a rhyme my dear. Cuel cleared his throat as he looked at Kitrenna.
Count the years but keep great hast, for the clock is ticking time away.
Will you find him?
Yes! no?
Or is he wandering around like a lost soul.
Be thee witch or fair lass, who ever finds him must make a pact.
If in a years time his heart they take, the other must come to my world with out complaint
Cross your heart and don't think twice come little girls the time is right.
Put your hands to your heart and swear you will let this game start.
I will be the one to find Arth and you will rot in the Underworld for all eternity.
Fear welled up in Kitrenna's throat as Kosma hopped up it the air and landed on all fours. She had transformed herself into a little dandan and with a flick of her tail she was dashing off into the night air. Kitrenna felt sick, what had she just done. Cuel walked over to her and gave her a wink.
Not all magic is powerful; but many say she is a crafty girl. If you want to win this game you will have to think just like her.
But how? I have no magic and have never even gone off the island. Cuel just grinned at her as he threw a book into her lap.
I think you will find this helpful. Some witches get their powers from birth others just need a little practice. And with that the faces of these strange immortal beings who had surrounded her began to vanish away into the darkness.
She looked around at the stars that were starting to form in the sky and realized that Canton could no longer be called home for her any more. She would have to find Arth, and thanks to his spell over her life she would have forever and a day to search for him. Carefully she got up and dusted herself off as she opened the book. It was in a language she had never seen before and she had no clue how to read it but tucked away deep in its pages she knew was a map to Arth.
By the time Kitrenna's parents realized their daughter was gone she was already on a ship heading to the island of Grove. She had no idea how long or what dangers she would face but whatever happened she was going to find Arth, even if Kosma stopped her along the way.
About Kitrenna goes here!
Friends
Kosma, oh Kosma I wish we were friends. I still don't know why we have turned into enemies. Is it because of the game? Or something else? Either way, I have to beat you even though I look at you as a sister. I hope you are doing well where ever you are.
Cuel is someone I dont understand. Through my journeys I see him show up from time to time almost like my guardian angel, but I know that is not the case. I can't decided if he likes me or if he just hates the idea of Kosma winning. Either way, I try to keep my distance. Yet, I am forever grateful to him giving me my spell book. Without it I would be lost against Kosma.

Jerimiias is a boy I met when I was in Evoi. I still cant believe I actually was that far away from home. But, the hot desert sandy air tells me I was clearly there. I ran into Jerimiias at the market, he was cloaked and trying to get away from the guards who were after him. Tattiri told me to keep my distance from him but I did not listen. The moment he saw me he asked me to come live at the palace. I dont know whats up with him. He says he is a collector of rare things. Yet, be he a sultan or a peasant I have no interested or time for him. Yet he did put me up for about a month while I searched for Arth's reincarnation, so I am grateful to him for that.
Greuno is a Duke of Milt, a city close to the capital of Nor. He is the boy my Father chose for me. I have to admit my Father actually might have good taste. Uno is a sweet guy and gave me one of the most beautiful dolls I have ever seen. Yet, my heart will always belong to Arth and it seems that Uno has a love for only his work.Art Gallery
So Kitrenna started off as a older woman, and frankly adults are so not cute, so now she is my little baby. But, here is some of the art I did of her in the past.^^
