Kihakue part 1

I was born in the eastern forest, deep and dark. My pride was a mix of the element light and darkness, and so was I. We were taught how to control both elements, and combine them in order to become stronger. For as far as we know, no one knew of our pride, for we lived in the safety and peace of a place that was often described as 'haunted'. We adjusted to the harsh way of live in that forest, and because we could use both light and darkness in our advantage, we were successful. At least, that is what they told me afterwards. I can barely remember anything from my past pride. And my past family. I see their faces, faded, not sharp enough to recognize. But that's all there's left of them.
The first years of my life were probably the best I've ever had. I was healthy, playful, like any other cub of our pride. But when I turned four, I got sick. The pain started at my stomach, and later spread out to my legs, paws, neck. Eventually my whole body. Nobody knew what was wrong with me. I became more quiet, just lying there, crawled up to one of my parents, too afraid to move. After a few months, the pain started to hollow me out. All I could was blankly staring at the ground, breathing heavily. My parents became desperate as my situation got worse, and asked several healers for help. They did all they could, but couldn't help even to reduce the pain. I tried to endure the constant pain that never slept and got worse every day, but there was no escaping it, not even for a second. No one knew it wasn't my body that caused the pain, but my soul, that was slowly fading. And neither did I. Oh, how I wish I did.
I refused to eat, or even drink in the end, becoming weaker and weaker. I couldn't do anything anymore. I wasn't even able to die. One evening, the pain got horribly bad. Worse than I've ever felt in my entire life. I screamed, shocking from side to side in an attempt to stop the pain. I squeezed my eyes shut, and for a moment, the pain was gone. I slowly opened my eyes. But before I could even see, everything turned black.

When I woke up, I felt nothing. Not the pain I was used to, just nothing. I felt so glad, so safe. Then I heard the faint sound of a scream. It sent thrills to my spine, and I opened my eyes. I realized I stood right up, and apparently walked out of the cave. Then my vision came back. I was shocked by what I saw. Everywhere on the ground lay the lifeless bodies of who once were my family and friends. Their lifeless eyes all turned to me. Not a single movement. I stood still, nailed to the ground. Above the ravage floated small, shining orbs. I gasped and stepped back as they were floating in my direction. Suddenly, they sped up, piercing right through me. I had no idea what happened. My entire body glowed for a few seconds, and then turned back to normal. I was too shocked to actually realize what happened to me, to my family. I didn't have much time to think. Out of nowhere, a big silhouette of a kougra jumped at me. His jaws closed around my neck, almost piercing me with his sharp teeth as it dragged me along. I tried to scream for help, but I couldn't. Not that it would have made any difference. All of the air was forced out of my lungs as the kougra charged forward and jumped again, away from what was left of my home. The kougra sped up, surprisingly enough without hitting a tree or any other obstacle. I didn't knew what was happening to me. Did this kougra…did that to my family? But why was the pain gone? For a while, I was paralyzed. Then finally, the clouds that had been keeping my head fuzzy cleared up a bit. 'Wh-what do you want from me..' I hesitantly spoke, though my words weren't more than a whisper. The kougra seemed to slow down a bit and turned an eye to me, for as far as he could. Not a single sign of pity or regret reflected in his eyes. The color of his eyes remembered me of the sky on a cold day. 'Ah, you've regained reason'. His voice sounded quite calm for someone that had been running that fast. 'Finally'. He jumped once more, then stood still at once, simply dropping me to the ground. I wasn't quick enough to find my balance and fell down. Disoriented I stood up, looking at the kougra behind me. He was longer than the average grown-up kougra, and quite higher too. Two crystal-like horns at the back of his skull, of which the left one was broken off half. Three more at his back, seeming to start at his spine, and another four on his tail. His fur had a light blue color, though his belly was deep blue with strange white markings on it. His front fangs walked down all way to his chin, like a saber-tooth tiger. He was quite muscular, though it wasn't really visible due to his thick fur. He looked at me with a cold glare, and then kneeled down a bit. 'It's easier to transport you when you're sitting on my back.' I wondered if he even knew what just happened to me. It was better not to refuse, though. Carefully I crawled on his back, wrapping one of my paws around one of the spines on his back. Surprisingly enough, his fur felt warm. He looked back to me one more time, as if he was checking whether I was alright or not, and then dashed forward again, without a warning. As he started running 'normally', I was surprised by how comfortable it was. It didn't felt like running at high speed, more like floating through the sky. Flying, perhaps, is comparable. 'My name is Sethir, though I'd prefer you to call me Seth.' The kougra slowly said, 'I am the Guardian of ice.' The words meant nothing to me. Apparently, Sethir could tell. '..You don't know what a Guardian is, do you.' That wasn't quite the first question on my mind. 'Are you the one who did this to me?' By speaking those words, I was forced to retrieve the memories from earlier that day. That sight…I'm afraid I'll never be able to forget even a detail of it. The tears forming in my eyes started to make my voice soft and weak, even worse than it already was. 'No, I'm not. You are.' The words paralyzed me for a while. What did he meant with "I was", I would never do anything to my own family. '..How do you mean?' I asked insecure. 'That's just the way it is. When you posses a red soul, apparently the energy slowly flows out of you. In the end, your instincts take over and steal every soul that's around at the moment. It's a glitch Brother still has got to fix.' He told about it as if it were about the most normal thing in the world, without any interest, it seemed. I didn't get it at all. 'A red soul..?' I recalled a certain legend one of the healers mentioned. One of long ago. That a being existed out of three parts, the body, the soul and the spirit. If they become separated, life ends..'That makes no sense!' I screamed in panic, 'even if that's true, then..why didn't I die?' Seth smirked faintly. 'So you've already figured out. Saves me quite the lot of words.' 'No! I don't understand at all!' I couldn't contain my emotions any longer. Tears slowly flowed over my cheeks. How could he say all of this? 'So you don't know the legends? Or better said, don't know the truth.' He stated. I calmed down a little bit, though my emotions still seemed to burn inside, eager to escape. 'I..I have heard..just a bit..' I had expected a sigh, but it didn't come. 'Then I suppose I'll have to explain it to you.' He shook his head for a moment, as if he wanted to clear his mind up. 'Whatever I'm going to tell you now might be true and might be false. It's your choise to believe it or not. But I think you will, won't you. You don't have much of a choise, after all' He paused for a few seconds. I decided just to wait and listen. 'In the beginning, there was nothing. Then, out of nowhere, a soul came to being. You know what a soul is, right?' I admitted I didn't. Without further ado he continued. 'A soul is the energy that keeps a being alive. It streams through every living being, comparable to blood. It provides us with energy we need to stay alive in this world. When a mortal dies, the spirit attaches itself to the soul as it leaves out of the body. Then they merge, and fly to the world of the death together. Any questions so far?' I thought for a while. '..I never heard of anyone seeing souls..How do you know they exist?' Sethir waited a wile, seemingly thinking how to put this to words. 'The energy goes unseen by the mortal eye. There was a time when things were different, but then some mortals started to use the souls against the world, in example, to stay alive forever. Both soul and spirit used to do so fade away. There was decided to hide the soul from being seen, mostly preventive. But since the 'sinners' misusing the souls had already gained the knowledge on how to control them, it was invain. Another plan was needed.' He sighed. 'That other plan are you.' 'Wha-..How do you mean me?!' Just when I thought I started to understand where this was going, the feeling faded away like it had never been. 'We have no official name for them yet. But among us we call them Soulsnatchers. There are three of them, to be precise. One of them is you. The other lives, or lived, far away from here, on the other side of this valley, and the third one was a Guardian once.' I wanted to prove him wrong, tell him that I was just a 'normal' someone, but he didn't gave me time to even start my sentence. 'This might be hard for you to understand, but you are a Soulsnatcher. It might not be in your blood, but it is in your soul. You are different from the mortals. Maybe I should have waited with this until you were a little older.' Again he sighed, pointing his view at the sky. 'But I suppose it's too late for that now. I suppose I'll have to tell you the whole story.'

To Be Continued.
