The soulstone.
The soulstone is an actual organ that isn't known by most mortal creatures, not even by specialists. It is formed even before birth, in the first stadia of life. The functions are mostly to power cells to form necessary substances, or divide them to create new cells. Knowing that lifts the fog off the secret of creating matter out of nothing, and clears out most of the known legends. There is needed an 'invisible' force: the Soul. Both soul and soulstone (usually located at the sternum) are invisible to the inexperienced eye. Only those with the vision of a Soulsnatcher or Guardian, or one that has trained in the element of light or darkness (or in being a sinner) for a lifetime (or is very, very talented, lol) can see them, but they won't call it the soul. They use it to recognize others without vision. They see the 'aura', as they call it.
In order to power the cells of the body, a soulstone needs to drain energy from the soul. A soul only lasts a temporal time. At a point, the energy is all used up. That's why a body becomes exhausted over time, and eventually is forced to give up. For example, if a certain substance in the skin stops being formed, wrinkles start to show. If a substance in the hair stops being formed, the hair becomes grey. If a substance in the brain stops being formed, the functions go down. Eventually, it's weakened so badly it can't stay alive. Because the first original Soulsnatchers (two of them, actually. The third one was a guardian) had more than one soulstone (eight, to be precise), meant to make them stronger, and protect them from harm. But it had a horrible side effect that was overlooked by their creators. The soul's energy got drained up faster. 8 times as fast as a normal soul would. Within 4 years, their red soul started to fade away. The process of becoming older changed. Instead of wrinkles, grey hair, brain functions going down, worse things happened due to the sped up aging. There wasn't enough time for those long-term losses. Instead, the cells responsible for forming important substances in the stomach, muscles, bones and blood faded and simply disappeared, laying down their so important functions. There wasn't enough energy to keep them going. So, instead of the usual aging-symptoms, they suffered through horrible pains. Something wasn't right, but no one knew what. Mistakes like this never naturally occur, and if they would, the poor thing would probably use up its soul a few weeks after birth. Soulsnatchers, strangely enough, would not. Because they're not fully mortal, but 1/3 immortal. That means that they won't die from a natural cause (hunger, illness, fire, etc). No matter in however many pieces you shred them, eventually they'll be able use their soul to heal themselves back from head to toe. Even if they don't, their bodies will revive itself. But usually it'll steal your soul before you've got the chance to hurt them. Preventive, or just for fun. Soulsnatchers are created by the Heaven Guardians. They have a goal in this world. To rid the world of so called 'sinners', that misuse souls, and by doing so, destroy both the Guardian's realm and the earth bit by bit. The entire dimension revolves around souls. Sinners spend their whole life practicing to control souls. It can be extraordinary hard. Only those intelligent and talented enough to manipulate nature manage to do so. Most never manage in their lives. Though, the only way for a mortal sinner to escape an 1/3 immortal Soulsnatcher (that could keep on chasing after them forever) is to find a way to destroy them.
mortal: Can die by any natural cause. Often has the power to control one certain element.
1/3 immortal: No death by natural causes, though quite easy to kill (for an immortal one)
2/3 immortal: No death by natural causes. No need to breath, eat, sleep, can do so for 'fun' though. Stronger and slightly larger than any mortal (and mostly than any 1/3 immortal). Is formed into an actual form. Usually can't shapeshift or take the form of an element anymore.
3/3 immortal: Doesn't necessarily have a form. Can shapeshift, take the form of an element, and can not possibly die. The only way for a full immortal being to be able to die is to lose so much of its power that it degrades to a 2/3 immortal or lower. Can become mortal if it loses too much energy. The energy is hard to run empty on though. Creating an universe would only degrade by one point.
