The mountains stood gleaming, the moonlight reflecting of their crystalline snowy slopes, covered in the snow of the mountain's everlasting winter. In a small cave, mostly obscured by the mountain and by the swirling snow, yawned in the mountainside like a small mouth. A tiny Lupe, only a baby then, huddled at the entrance, transfixed by the eddies and flurries of snow whirling outside of the cave. He looked like an ice statue, such was the color of his fur - almost crystalline, and light, light blue. His eyes, oddly, were the color of the sun-warmed sea, where green melds with blue indistinguishably. The tips of his ears and bushy tail were a light silvery-grey, and the color of a band around his tail matched that of his soft, kind eyes. Another Lupe, much larger than he, and colored a soft white, nudged him gently with her muzzle. "Come in, dear, you'll catch something in this cold," the Luppess murmured softly. "But Mother..." the young Lupe stopped as he saw the Lupess' eyes. Then he rose and nodded to her silently, following his mother farther into the cave. A small pack of Lupes sat around a fire near the back of the cave, talking quietly. "Come, Khrenlis. Have something to eat." The Lupe's father, a stout Lupe with fur the color of evergreens, called from the fireside. The young Lupe looked imploringly at his father. "Can't you please just call me Khren? His father waved a paw at him small son. "It's not your given name, Khrenlis. When you come of age, you can call yourself whatever you choose. But for now, Khrenlis you are and so shall be." Khren dropped his shoulders and sighed. |
