Latest Update: Special thanks to sweetesttenchi, who told me the new rule about the word li*k. I had to go through alot of trouble to replace that one word, it erased over half the page since I used it a few times in the story portions. Good thing I had a backup saved ^^ Too bad I don't have a recent save for Novi's page ;-; But I'll get started on fixing that one soon enough. Point is, the li*k to Kes's page has been updated. :)

Almost anyone has heard of the famous zafara who served as a double agent during the Darigan war, but what of her lesser known sibling?

Outpost

¤ The sun creeps over the mountains, bringing forth a new day, it's rays tinting the world red. South of Terror Mountain and East of Meridell, lies an area of wilderness. It's ancient confines harboring almost no sentient life. But a shadow stands, composed of two beings, waiting to greet the star. They stand upon a cliff's edge, it's rocky sides deadly to those stupid enough to fall. Behind them rose an outpost, or what remained of one. The stone that composed such a structure has long been defeated by time, rain and moss. Still, tattered banners hung from it's precipice, wavering a silent goodbye to the moon. This was only one of many such forgotten towers that dotted neopia. They were created many turns ago, even before the Darigan kingdom left the soil of Neopia for the endless skies above.

The clash between Meridell and the Darigan kingdom was nothing new. In the days that the Darigan Citadel was still firmly on terra, these outposts housed Darigan soldiers so that they may monitor Meridell movements, intercept Meridell trade caravans, and basically try to sink their economy. Meridell did the same to Darigan. The skirmishes lasted for many years, and both kingdoms wished the fighting would end, but the fighting went on. Darigan had had enough, and the plans to make the Citadel rise to the heavens finally came to fruition. Peace returned once more, and the Citadel flourished, the orb protecting them from disease and famine. The outposts went unused for decades since that time, till the need for them came when their most treasured possession, the sacred orb, was stolen. Without the orb, the Darigan populace suffered. Those on board the airborn citadel who's very life force were connected to the orb began to morph and mutant into the purple and black beings they are known as today. Luckily, this one zafara escaped that fate, she was a descendant of one of the citizens who chose to stay behind when the Citadel rose and thus her essence was never enslaved. Although she has never seen Darigan or his great castle of the sky, the stories and traditions passed down to her were enough to earn her fierce loyalty.

Briefing

¤ It is morning. In a drafty room located in the middle of the Meridell castle, a gruff lupe figure was addressing his troops. He has assigned you and the rest of your comrades the menial task of bringing a certain message to every solider out in the field. As you file out of the room to complete your objective, you glumly go over the simple, yet important message in your head. The long war between Meridell and Darigan has ended. All military personnel are hereby discharged from the military and are asked to return to their civil lives, congratulations. Have a nice day. You groan at the thought, 'If -all- of us have been discharged, why am I still working? Stupid draft...' You sluggishly plod along Westward to the outskirts of Meridell, where the soldier in question should be.

Files

¤ You look down at the brown portfolio in your hands, the Meridell crest plastered on the front. 'I hope I wasn't assigned a billion soldiers' you gag. You break off the seal and begin rummaging through the files given to you by your commander. You were surprised that it only contained one. 'Lucky me! I'll just give my message and be home by lunch' you grin.

Civilians

¤ It is midday by the time you reach your destination. You have never been so far from the safe borders of Meridell before so you tread carefully, your eyes seeing shadows that aren't really there. Too busy looking over your shoulder for the rumored thieves and barbarians that you heard so much at the local tavern, you did not notice the large orange-red "boulder" in front of you. "AAAAAGGGGHHH!" You yell out as you fall with a thud. Quickly turning toward your "attacker", you draw out the portfolio like a sword, whacking the form shouting, "Hold there barbarian, I'm a-a great GREAT knight and and and, I have friends, yes that's right, friends who are coming right this minute! Soyoubetternottryanything! Please don't hut me..." You whimper out, eyes shut tight in fear, but you continued your attack as if your life depended on it. You stopped your frenzy when you heard an ominous groan coming from the large lump of flesh beside you, beginning to quake and tremble. Then the groan suddenly becomes a lazy yawn. Reluctantly you opened one eye, then the other to take a better look at your opppnent. The "boulder" as it would seem, was a large kougra. It raised it's head toward you, emerald eyes showing irritation, perhaps annoyed that you awoken him. The next instant, the hulking kougra slumped back down with a crash. You poke him to see if it was still alive, in return you were rewarded with a long string of loud snores... "Err, I'll be going now," you mumble as you walked, hurriedly away, not wanting anymore trouble. 'Wait till the guys hear this, I went up against a giant beast with 3, no 5 heads, with eyes of blood and talons the size of 3 men' you crow, 'Hey, a little exaggeration doesn't hurt...'

☼ Still too excited from the encounter, you fail to notice a strange eyrie near the edge of a grove. It seemed to be tinkering with peices of what appeared to be a large telescope. Some noises could be heard as the creature busied himself with assembling his object of affection. A serpentine tail twitched with excitment, his head tilting every so often towards the clear sky.

☼ A bit more relaxed, your ears perk at the sound of music. Curious, you venture toward it's origin, leading you into the rolling hills. Amongst the green threads that wavered in the wind, a wocky could be seen, it's head and mane bouncing with joyous laughter as it moved to the beat of a nearby boombox. You try to greet the neopet, but it seems he could not hear you over the roar of music. You decide to leave him in his happy state, humming the catchy tune in your head.

☼ The edges of an outpost's wall finally met your eyes and you began to hurry. But in your haste you accidently step on someone's tail. The owner of the tail, a lupess, whips around, it's head dashing back and forth in obvious fear, large ears twitching every which way. Her mouth hanged open as if to scream, but no sound left her lungs. Startled, you almost had the urge to attack with your "sword", but before you were able to respond, she scampered away, straight into a tree... You winced at her painful mistake, shaking your head as you now watched her -wobble- back into the shadows of a forest.

Take a charm, it could grant you good luck...

Stables

¤ A wrecked stable sat on a hill in the shadow of it's parent tower, the once vibrant red and purple paint that coated it, now dulled and chipped to non existance. The windows and doorway unhinged by the wind, and perhaps something else. As you lay eyes upon it's entrance, you immediately notice 3 jagged streaks across the wooden door.

¤ Judging from the menacing grarrl, it would be in your best interest to leave. But to your dismay, the light drizzle just moments before has become a hardened downpour. You hesitantly venture out of the stables, the droplets pummeling you unmercifully, the rain stinging your eyes as they stabbed like needles. You try to shield yourself from the attack as you scurry back to the confines of the tower, almost glad to return to this desolate place. Shivering from head to toe, your eyes brighten upon hearing the soothing sound of crackling, and it's promise of warmth. The sound came from the dark stairwell on the right that led downward. You begin to have second thoughts, but a well-timed shiver urged you on...
It led you to what seemed a small storage room, a humble fire mumbled in the far corner, it's light barely touching the walls. And near it, Keseragi sat on one of the many crates that hogged the room, her back towards you as she stared at the flames, her paw tossing a piece of timber to the hungry fire. Just then, Kes patted one of the crates beside her, her unmoving form still focused on feeding the flames. You quietly slide your way towards the fire and it's strange zafaran companion, but then something on your right catches your attention- a dust-covered cabinet. Through the browned glass, you can see small zafaras, poised in battle stances. The light licked their faces, making them seem practically alive, fighting in a never ending battle as their shadows silently danced across the room. 'Just, as this zafara believes... But when I fulfill my mission, she will finally be set free.' You think to yourself. You open the cabinet and pick some up to bring home, eager to show them to your friends.

Cabinet

¤ You look right below to the aged cabinet's second shelf. You grunted when you saw that it lay empty and you wonder, 'What even belonged there?' But there was one thing, almost invisible amongst the layers of dust, that you almost overlooked it. It was the remnants of a tattered scarf, almost similar to the one the zafara is wearing. Part of an old uniform perhaps? Or something more... The strange letters that wrapped around it seemed to glitter in the firelight. Do you dare try to steal a piece?

Criminals

¤ You turned away, finally realizing that you have lingered in the same spot for far too long. You pace towards the fire, causing a waft of dust to reach your nose. A sneeze follows, making the dusty surroundings rise around you. Once the dust finally settles, you spot the crumpled edge of stained paper on the wall. Curious, you remove more of the grime. The text was barely legible and you can just make out the paper's title- Criminals, Dead or Alive. Unsurprisingly, there were pictures of various Meridell residents, all displayed at their worst. "Propaganda," you snort in disgust, just relieved you decided not to wear any of Meridell's colors today as you remembered the zafara's questioning look.

You notice the dates beside the names and are relieved that none of these posts are recent. ^^ Fweeh no thieves!

Tunnels

¤ Finally satisfied at looking around, you settle yourself on the crate the zafara offered you earlier. You turn to give her a grateful nod, hoping for at least one decent conversation, but when you do, you turn to an empty seat. Confused, you look back towards the door, just barely managing to spot her tail as she departed without even a goodbye. Your brows furrow in annoyance at her rude leaving, but then blush at recalling how rude you yourself had been as you snooped around her home. GASP! You still have not given her your message! You race up the stairs, almost falling on the steps, "Miss. Miss WAIT!" You yell out to her, but in vain...
When you finally reach outside, there is nothing but endless wilderness before you. You let out a heavy sigh at your failure, but then hear a grarrl's war cry in the distance. You run towards the cliff's ledge to see if you can spot the pair. But in your haste, you slip, clumsily skidding down the rock face. You land with a thud. You groan as you clamber to get up, but just as you were about to, the ground beneath you begins to tremble, "Ooh, now what?" You barely manage to whimper as the ground breaks beneath your feet, leading you into a world of darkness. You finally awaken. You slowly manage to get up despite your aching limbs and judging by the moonlight that filtered through the hole you fell through, you have been out for hours. You try calling for help, hoping that zafara would hear you, but it seems this just wasn't your day. At least the rain's stopped... The moon must have felt pity for you as well, since her lantern revealed an array of tunnels. You figured them to be war escape tunnels, or maybe boris created them. At this point, you didn't really care, but which tunnel should you take?

As you took a tunnel, a sad thought gnawed at your heart. The zafara with eyes of glass, her loyalty traps her here, carrying out her duty till the last of her days, still fighting a war that ended so long ago... Your hand unknowingly grasped one of the figurines you took with you. It was blue.

Thank you for visiting, but would you ever wish to return?
