INTRO
The warm, humid air clings to your face as you fight your way through the dense foliage. Wet leaves slap past your body and thorns bite at your heels, yet still you plow on. The jungle presses in from all sides, balmy steam enveloping the area despite the hour of night. The pale glow of the moon scarcely makes its way through the thick canopy, resulting in patches of ghostly light here and there.
You are gradually regretting your decision to search for the Lost City of Geraptiku. The rumours sounded captivating at the time, yet now doubt claws at your mind. What were you thinking, heading off into the jungle alone like this?
From a distance you pick up the beat of a drum, its rhythmic pulse unnervingly similar to a heartbeat. You hesitate, then decide to move towards the reverberation in hopes of finding the way out. After an exhausting battle through the undergrowth, you come upon a clearing.
The drums cease immediately, and you find yourself surrounded by skulls on stakes. Small, desolate huts stalk the perimeter, and in the distance you distinguish the imposing silhouette of a large temple. A huge cauldron sits in the center of it all, the contents glowing an eerie green. You shiver slightly, taken aback by the frightful surroundings.
This must be Geraptiku. For some reason you are not as pleased as you thought you would be. In fact, you just want to leave. The deep, hollow sockets of the skulls seem to follow you as you move around, as if sensing the presence of an intruder. Just as you resolve to leave, a pair of bright green eyes emerges from the shadows…
BACKGROUND
For centuries there has been an ancient tribe inhabiting Mystery Island, unbeknownst deep in the heart of the jungle. Hidden from the remainder of the world, it is untouched by the passing of time. Here the Voodoo traditions of old live on in the Lost City of Geraptiku.
The newly discovered species of Hissi have in fact always been present in Neopia. Serpents are revered among Voodoo practioners, for they are said to be descended from the gods themselves. The Hissi tribe of Geraptiku had lived in secret until recently, when explorers came upon the city. It was within this tribe that Kastrel was born.
Kastrel was gifted from birth with high spiritual powers. He was immediately trained as a shaman, for he was seen as a gift from the gods. Kastrel heightened in power throughout his training, intent on keeping the ancient traditions alive. He spent many a night in the Tomb of Damballah, their venerated serpent god.
By the time of his initiation, he had grown greatly in his abilities. The tribe had never seen such a shaman. At the ceremony, Kastrel was presented with the sacred asson and collier, thus becoming a true Hougun. He was also granted the honor of a sacred totem animal, the Quetzal. Mombu serves to be his guide to the spirit world and a familar.
VOODOO TERMS
Here are a few terms you may want to familiarize yourself with:
Asson ~ A sacred Voodoo rattle that signifies priestly authority.
Batterie ~ A set of drums or the rhythmic sound produced by drums during ritual.
Collier ~ A Voodoo ritual necklace given during initiation.
Hougun ~ A fully initiated priest of Voodoo, one who has received his asson.
Hougenikon ~ A ritual assistant to the Hougun or Mambo.
Mambo ~ A Voodoo priestess, the female equivalent to a Hougun.
Vever ~ A symbolic design formed on the ground using powder at or before the beginning of a ceremony.
DESCRIPTION
Kastrel can be described as a Shadow Hissi crossed with Island. Here are his basic traits:
- Black skin
- Green stomach
- Regular Hissi eyes (yellow with green pupil)
- White island markings (note in particular the skeletal ones on his wings)
- Voodoo accessories made of claws/bones/skulls/etc
- Bone through nose (see the Island Kyrii for reference)
