Confessions of an Immortal

Dusk and dawn are arguably the two most peaceful, serene times of day. Time seems to slow, senses are heightened, and the beauty of the world appears to be amplified tenfold. At dawn the earth awakens from it's slumber; the melodious songs of birds fill the air, and the sun peeks up from the horizon. It seems that the beauty of it all is too much – the earth even weeps at dawn, leaving graceful tears of dew on plants and flowers.

It is at dusk, however, that things begin to hide. People's greatest fears come alive… Darkness, mystery, the unknown… Yes, although the evening is peaceful, it can also be dangerous. With so many things hiding, who's to say you're not being watched right now?

A soft voice, maybe your conscience, begins to whisper to you.

Do you feel panic beginning to set in? Is that familiar tingle of fear beginning to creep its way up your spine? Are you looking around yet, searching the shadows for whatever may be hiding there?

Ah, what you seek my friend isn't hiding.

Look, over there, do you see that? Yes, that, right there.

See, I told you.

Kally doesn't hide.

You glance around and see it. No, see her. Just like the voice said.

Right there, standing before you is a lovely young Kougra girl, hiding in plain sight.

The voice again.

I'm sure you want to learn more about this mysterious young girl, the kougra with two tails? Well, I'd be glad to tell you her story.

Kally's story is one that needs to be told. It is a story of growing, learning, and evolving. It is a story that tells of successes and failures, hardships and prosperity.

But most of all, this is a story of a young kougra girl much wiser then her age…

This is a story of a girl hiding in plain sight.

This is the story of the nine lives of Kalyja Kennedy.

Character Concept and Persona

The one thing that I strived to do was to make an interesting and original character for Kally. Cliches are not my thing – I didn't want Kally to be a cute little baby who cries and wants things… xD So I thought, and I got creative. ^^

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "a cat's got 9 lives", and that's the main element of Kally's story and personality. She has nine lives. Not nine lives in the classical sense either. The length of Kally's lives doesn't depend on age or her health or anything like that… Instead, she has a goal in each of her lives; virtues that she has to truly learn and master before she's allowed to move on to the next life. Things like trust, loyalty, forgiveness, etc. She can only 'end her life' and move on to the next one when she has mastered her virtue.

Kally is currently living her third life. This is shown by the 3 rings on one of her tails, and she also has a marking on her right shoulder with the Roman numeral "three". The number on her marking and the number of rings will increase as she goes through her lives.

The catch is this – in each life, Kally has one disadvantage, an obstacle that makes it harder for her to acheive her goal. She also is not aware of the virtue she is trying to conquer. This makes the entire process rather hard for her, but it sure does keep things interesting.

In her first life, Kally's goal was to master the virtue of bravery. She presumably mastered the virtue because she moved on to her second and third life, but she had virtually no memories of this life. The reason why is still a mystery to her. The only information Kal retained was her lesson of bravery, her meeting of Lamb, and a few other arbitrary memories.

In her second life, Kally's virtue was patience, and her disadvantage was muteness – you'll be able to read more about that in her story.

Kally is currently living her third life, so she has no idea what virtue she is aiming to conquer. However, her disadvantage is homelessness, and this is proving rather difficult for her to cope with. She has had to resort to pickpocketing, and uses her cute and innocent appearance to her advantage. All of these different virtues and challenges help to shape who Kally is.

When it comes to her personality traits, Kally is a very well-spoken and intelligent girl. She is able to take the knowledge and experiences from her previous lives with her when she begins a new one, so although she's only 19, Kally had the intellect and understanding of someone much older. She is slightly argumentative, but she tends only to argue when she has experiences to back up her belief.

Another aspect of her character is that Kal is a dancer – this is clearly represented in her physical design. She is small and thin with a dancer's body, and her tiny stature makes her look a lot younger then she really is. She wears classic 'dancer' attire, a long, white shirt with either comfortable socks or barefoot. She totes around Lamb, her plushie Babaa, and this adds to her child-like appearance. In all honesty her design is simple, and I meant it to be that way. With such a complicated background story, I figured it would be best to keep her physical design uncomplicated.

Since I know others have probably written amazing characters for Kally I'm also relying on something else in this application – dedication and love. I know I'm not the best at art or writing, but I do try very hard, and the next few sections will hopefully prove that to you!

Lives Present and Past

Life Number One
Virtue: Bravery
Obstacle: Unknown

Having virtually no knowledge of her first life, it was very hard for Kally to even scrape together these few memories that you read here. This chapter is taken from Kally's diary, as is chapter two. Writing the story has been one of the toughest parts of this application, so I really hope you're find of this section. Enjoy your read!

Even just thinking back to my first life, writing these words, sharing these memories… It pains me. Not in the typical way – this story won't cause you to shed tears or wrench your heart… No, it pains me because I feel like it was wasted time. Who knows how many days, weeks, years I spent living that life, and I came out with practically nothing.

Well, I shouldn't say nothing – the few things I did retain from my first life are things I truly appreciate. My first memory is a splendid one. Simply put, the memory is of music. Beautiful, harmonious melodies filling the air, a feeling of warmth and happiness washing over me as I listen to those wondrous sounds… Mhm, yes, my first life gave me the love of music, but it also gave me something else unexpected… My talent for the piano.

I was at a music store one day – I had decided to wander in from the street, just expecting to browse around for a bit. After reading through a couple of music scores and playing around with the guitars, I made my way to the doorway, ready to leave. There was a beautiful grand piano a few feet away from the door, and I decided to have a seat. It wasn't like I was drawn to it or anything, I guess it just happened by luck, or maybe fate… Either way, I sat myself down and pressed a few of the keys… And then the music from my memories began playing again. This time the notes weren't being played in my mind, it was me, myself who was playing them, my fingers moving over the keys as if we were long lost friends. The owner of the music store came over and complimented me – I was only able to smile sheepishly and thank him as I walked out of his store, still stunned.

A few weeks later I returned to the music store and purchased that very same piano… I've been playing passionately ever since.

One of the other great things I took from my first life was Lamb, my Babaa. I have no memory of meeting her for the first time, but the first memory I do have of her is a wonderful one.

I remember seeing a moving figure in my bag – something was shuffling around in there, tossing and tumbling about. I approached with cautious steps, and it was only as I neared the fuzzy little creature that I realized there was no harm to be found. A Babaa, (a plushie one at that) poked her head out of my bag and stared up at me with the cutest little smirk…

It was a cream colour with a blue face and legs, and the creature had a little pink tail. There was a big rip in her cream-coloured fabric though, and I later patched the spot up with a pink piece of fabric, to match her tail. I noticed something later on, too. A tag with a price on it, and the title, "LAMB", was sewn to the Babaa's right-back foot. I'm not sure if that was the kind of toy she was supposed to be, or her name, but it stuck, and now that's what I call her. ^^

I had never owned a pet before, and to be honest I don't think I really ever wanted a pet. Then again, it seemed that fate had brought us together, and I have never been one to question a power as strong as fate.

So, maybe I had never planned to tote around a patched up, raggedy little Babaa, but that's the way it turned out, and I have to say I've grown quite fond of Lamb.

The last memory I have of my first life isn't the best. In fact, it's a rather unpleasant memory, and I think the bits and pieces of it are the key to unlocking my first life. I, however, have not put the pieces together properly, and so things are still a blur to me. I'll share with you what I do remember, though. All of the memories are in bits and pieces, so bear with me...

I remember a bright red bicycle with a golden bell on the handlebars. The colour was almost obnoxiously vibrant, and the way the light hit it, an odd reddish-white glow fell on the sidewalk beside the bike. I don't remember who was riding it, or where I was, I just remember the bike. I also remember that it was raining that day – the heavens opened up and the sky began to cry powerful tears of precipitation onto the earth below. I was soaked, and I remember the unpleasant feeling of the cold rain against my skin as vividly as if it happened yesterday.

Those fragments were the last memories I had of my first life. I know it's silly, but every time I pass a red bike I have to take a second glance, to see if there's a golden bell attached to the handlebars, and every time it rains, I get that same odd feeling when the water hits my skin.

And then, suddenly, I began my second life.

Life Number Two
Virtue: Patience
Obstacle: Muteness

I was thrown into my second life so fast it was unbelievable. The odd thing was, I didn't start it off from birth. I began my life at the age of 9 years old. This idea was totally new to me, and it took awhile to cope. Starting life off as a child? I hadn't learned anything, I didn't know much about myself, even! I had no memories of anything besides the few I mentioned before, and I didn't know where I was or why I was there.

Once I had gotten used to everything though, my life was relatively normal. In fact, there was really nothing overly special about my second life, and so I'll do my best to keep this brief.

In all honesty, it wasn't very hard to master the second virtue (the virtue of patience) – the hardest thing was figuring out that was what I had to master! I began my second life as I said at 9 years old, and I was living in a boarding school not far from Neopia Central. Everything went great for the first 2 or three years of my 'life'. I had friends, and the classes were fun, and I was a quick learner. Great at math and even better at music, I was quite the exceptional child. Things were a breeze… until I became mute.

There was no incident, nothing traumatizing or catastrophic. It was a rainy Sunday morning, and we had all slept in a little later then usual. I woke up that morning, unable to speak. It was as simple as that. I went to many different doctors, but none could explain my sudden inability to speak. I was shocked at first, but I later realized that must have been part of my test – they weren't going to make it easy for me to master these 9 virtues.

And so I took my muteness, I took it in stride, and I continued to try and find out what virtue I had to master. I tried kindness, selflessness, trust… I lost count after awhile. And then one day, it happened. The incident that made me realize what virtue I had to master.

The school was on a trip to the city, and I entered a coffee shop with a couple friends. They all placed their orders without any trouble. When it came time for me to order I had to use sign language – the only was of communication I knew since my muteness. The cashier didn't understand any sign language at all. And so I tried again. And again, and again.

Slowly, she was able to decipher what I was saying, through more hand signs. I was patient with her, and by the end of our little 'conversation' I felt somehow… different. I knew that this feeling must have something to do with the virtue I had to master, and I knew deep down that patience was the virtue I had to master.

As I began getting better and better at being patient, something unexpected happened – I regained my ability to speak. I didn't tell this to anyone, in fact, I rarely even talked. Sometimes I would whisper to Lamb, just to show her that I was, indeed, able to speak. Soon enough I became an expert at being patient, and I had friends coming to me all the time needing a shoulder to cry on. I would sit there and listen, and stay there until I felt I had helped them all I could. I was indeed becoming very, very patient.

I don't remember the day I mastered the virtue, but I remember waking up suddenly, thrown into my third life.

Life Number Three
Virtue: Love
Obstacle: Homelessness

And thus my third life began. Unlike my second life, I began this life from birth. The only problem was that I wasn't born into a loving, caring family. I was born, and then almost immediately put up for adoption.

I spent the first 8 years of my life in and out of foster homes, and sometimes I even spent time back at the orphanage every once in awhile. It really wasn't as horrible as it seems, in fact I kind of liked moving around, meeting new people. One of my foster family's even got me started with dance, which is now one of my favourite hobbies. Yes, things went fairly well. I mean, after awhile I did get discouraged of course, not being adopted and all, but by that point, I realized it was only a few years until my 'freedom' – that is, my 18th birthday wasn't far away, and at that time I'd be able to live on my own, no longer a 'child of the state' as they call it.

And so my 18th birthday came and went without much eventfulness. I left the orphanage, ready to start my own life, ready to continue questing for the next virtue that I had to master. I caught a hitch in the road though; I couldn't find a place to live.

The orphanage set me up with a job, I had a bank account and everything, but it seemed that nobody wanted to give me a place to live. That was when I pieced it all together – the orphanage, the many different families – I wasn't meant to ever have a home. My obstacle was homelessness.

Since then I've been something of a street performer – I take my dancing talent to the streets in order to get enough money to eat. There are even times that I'm offered small parts in musicals, and my name is starting to become common. That kougra girl, the one who dances? Or even, that street-performing kougra? Some even know me by name! Yes, Kalyja, that lovely girl who dances?

And so I'm doing my best to survive, while still question to figure out the virtue I need to master. I must say this virtue is a tricky one, I can't seem to figure it out, and I've been trying for 19 years now.

I have an odd feeling that this journey of mine has just begun.

In fact, I think my third life may just be the most interesting one yet.

Life Number Four
Virtue: Trust

A Plushie Pal

You've already read a little about Kally's petpet, and so this section will be fairly breif. As you can see from the image of Lamb, she is a light cream colour with a blue face and legs. Her face is a lighter blue then her legs, and she has white polka-dots all over her face too. Lamb also has a little pink tail, and a matching pink patch that Kally had sewn onto her shortly after she found the little Babaa. Once the tiny creature had been fixed up, she was as good as new, and has been loyal to Kally ever since. ^^

Lamb is constantly at Kally's side, and if the two are spereated even for a little while, the poor Babaa gets nervous and starts to shake. When Kally is near, however, the small creature is as happy as ever, and can be very affectionate, too. The other great thing about Lamb is that she can play dead so to speak, and pretend to be just a normal stuffed animal. This is quite useful, especially when Kally tries to look like an innocent young homeless child. ;)

Roleplay

As I mentioned I am a roleplayer, and here I have documented the roleplay that I've began with my friend A. She is using Vaticco and I of course am using Kally.

Incase you're not familiar with roleplay, I'll tell you a little bit about what it is. Roleplaying is considered a 'game' (it's sometimes called RPG, roleplay game ^^) where people take on the roles of their characters and work together to create a kind of story. In the roleplay you're writing as how your character would act, so you're 'playing the role' of that character - in this case I'm playing the role of Kalyja. :P

Keep in mind posts that are in NORMAL TEXT are mine, and posts in italicized text are my friend A's posts. C:

The large clock in the middle of the square tells you that it's just after 8:30 on this lovely July evening. It's relatively warm; a light breeze occasionally blows by, stirring up the stagnant air left over from a hot summers day. The light in the sky slowly recedes over the horizon has dusk begins to fall on Neopia Central. The street lamps turn on shortly thereafter, casting a warm, incandescent glow on the now empty streets of the city.

Well, almost empty.

Underneath one of the street lamps is a wooden bench, and on that bench sits what appears to be a young kougra girl. She looks no older then 13 or 14 – in reality, the girl is only a few months shy of her 20th birthday. It's no wonder most mistake her for a young girl – her wavy auburn tresses cascade over her shoulders gracefully, and her light, striped fur helps to gives her an awfully young and innocent look. The girl wears an face of calmness and serenity as she sits on the bench, staring out into the shadows of twilight.

There's a small bag at her feet, and the head of a plushie Babaa pokes out, surveying the area. As the Babaa shifts around a pair of ballet slippers falls out of the bag. Her long, flowing cream-coloured sweater and cropped white shorts confirm the assumption that the kougra is a dancer.

She reaches down and pets the Babaa, her soft, harmonious voice murmuring, "It's alright, shhh." As she speaks, her tail curls instinctively – rather, her tails. The kougra seems to have not one, but two tails.

Hm, what an odd character…

Hidden behind the deteriorated walls of a restaurant that laid just beyond the rays of the street lamp, was a boy, crouched on the sidewalk, watching the strange Kougra.

His face was fair, framed with soft white-blond curls that twisted agilely over his ears. He was fiddling with his yarn-spun sweater, clutching the childish rocket-print to his heart, wondering who the Kougra was, and what she was doing, sitting on the bench that laid port to the alleyway - his home.

He debated for a few moments and seemed to come to a decision; afterall, he had been gone too long, and he was afraid the others had taken advantage of it. He couldn't risk that! It was his quilt, the one that he had found, and the other homeless wits would not have it! He unfurled slowly from his crouched position and stepped out, quickly, into the light of the street lamp.

Poetry By Me

Here are some haiku poems. They follow the pattern of 5 syllables on the first like, 7 on the second line, and 5 on the last line. :)

Conflicts and struggles,
Such a torn and tarnished past
Kalyja, fallen.

Searching for meaning
Trying to follow virtues
Where does she belong?

The fallen soon rise.
Beauty and grace approach us,
Quite a unique girl…

What secrets you hide,
This mystery and these charms
Kally… immortal?

Continue to rise,
Spreading such wonder and awe
…Are nine lives enough?
