Summary
The first plot:
Shadow Link once served under the great Wind Mage, Vaati. But when Vaati was defeated multiple times in Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures and Minish Cap, Vaati fled to the shadows with Shadow Link close behind. Yes, the two were defeated. But they did not die. They resurfaced as soon as they caught wind of Ganondorf being on the move again, and quickly offered their service. Ganondorf then captured both Link and Princess Zelda and held them prisoner in the Gerudo Fortress. Vaati knew that Ganondorf was the top dog and would probably remain that way for the decades to come, so he became content with terrorizing citizens of Hyrule under Ganondorf's orders, and all thoughts of rebellion were relinquished. Shadow Link followed his old master's footsteps, also forgetting all thoughts of rebellion. That is, until he met Faris.
Faris is a strong-willed young Hylian who takes great pride in her skill with a sword. A well-traveled swordswoman, she has even ventured as far as Termina, and knows a great deal about the lands. She is rough of speech and not very kind-natured in general, but she'll warm up to those who she can find a connection with. She works as a mercenary of sorts, mostly just roaming the land and keeping the monsters that often appear under control. Her blade is for hire, but she'll only take interesting jobs that match up with her morals.
Shadow Link met Faris when he and Ganondorf first stormed Hyrule Castle in the attempt to capture it and convert many of its soldiers to their side. When Ganondorf found the King of Hyrule and attempted to capture him, Faris confronted the two and tried to intervene. Amused, Shadow fought Faris in a traditional one on one swordfight, but Faris infused her blade with holy light and gave Ganondorf a nasty wound on his left leg. Shadow Link slipped into shadow and tried to stop her, but soon it was quite clear: the bad guys were sorely losing, and the fight would soon be over. Sensing this, Ganondorf and Shadow fled Hyrule Castle, mounting the two horses waiting for them and starting their flight to the Gerudo Fortress. But Faris would not let them go so easily. She shot a bolt of energy at Ganondorf, but it hit Shadow Link instead, knocking him off his horse. Shadow Link's horse kept galloping away along with Ganondorf and his steed, but Shadow was left in the dust, with Faris quickly coming to confront him.
What happened at that point is unknown to Ganondorf, but Shadow Link admits that Faris challenged his service under Ganondorf and asked him why Shadow even remained under the Dark Lord's reign. A seed had been planted in Shadow Link, a seed of growing doubt and frustration that would erupt into a full-blown rebellion when the time was ripe. But as Faris pummeled Shadow with these questions, he fled to the Gerudo Fortress and found his master waiting with food and the next plan:
Shadow would ride with the Gerudo general and a small force of Gerudo guards to Hyrule Castle and offer to surrender at Hyrule Castle Town. He would not take no for an answer, and would use any means necessary to get the Hyrulians to oblige. Once they agreed, it would be revealed that Link would be released to return home to them in exchange for 10,000 Rupees. Then Shadow Link would ride back to Gerudo Fortress and prepare to return to Hyrule Castle disguised as the real Link, his counterpart. He would pretend that it was essential to return to the Gerudo Fortress and rescue Princess Zelda, making a small force of soldiers and the King of Hyrule to accompany him. In the end, Princess Zelda would not escape, and the King of Hyrule would become captured by Ganondorf's minions.
The plan went smoothly, for a while. Shadow Link rode with the General and her forces to Castle Town and proposed their surrender, and the Hyrulians agreed. But the seed of doubt and frustration that Faris had planted upon her little meeting with Shadow Link blossomed into an ugly nightmare, and Shadow confessed his wavering loyalties and ranted about Ganondorf's "true power" in front of the Hyrulians (his enemy) and the Gerudo general. The general became enraged at the fact that Shadow Link dared to say such a thing in front of the enemy, let alone in front of her. Furious, the general sent her troops on Shadow, but he suggested a proper duel in the center of Hyrule Field. One by one, the Gerudo warrior women faced Shadow Link in a sword duel. Shadow Link didn't fight well, seeing how he was fighting against his former friends, and was taken into custody after the fourth opponent. Shadow Link sits in a prison cell somewhere in the Gerudo Fortress, the same dungeon as the real Link is imprisoned. Ganondorf descends to his once-loyal servant's cell to confront Shadow Link for rebelling. After an exciting conversation, Shadow is relocated to a more secure prison cell in the Gerudo Fortress.
The second plot:
Ganondorf returns to the Gerudo Fortress throne room to carry out his next scheme and finds Vaati awaiting him, furious at Shadow Link's deception and eager to distract himself by wreaking havoc on the Hyrulian population. Ganondorf orders Vaati to start frightening the Hyrulian population into a frenzy while he prepares his main attack. Vaati obliges, and proceeds to blast through the front gates of Castle Town. He and a fleet of Kargaroks make their way through Castle Town, resisting the defensive efforts of Sheik and the Hyrulian guards. Eventually, Vaati captures a little girl and threatens her dxath if the Hyrulians refuse to surrender.

The Gerudo general bowed and excused herself from Gannon's presence. Her King certainly seemed pleased by how well she had served him. Gannon watched her go with a sneer upon his face. Without waiting a moment longer he stood and his cape billowed around him with the speed of his movements. He ignored the protests from his recently injured leg and left his throne room to pay a visit to his newest prisoner in the dungeons. The sound of his footfalls rebounded off of the many empty cells. It was rare that he troubled himself with keeping his prisoners alive for long. At the end of the hall Gannon reached the cell he had been searching for. On his way he had passed Link's cell, but did not trouble himself with the chosen hero. After much contemplation during the course of his trip to the dungeons his blood had set to boiling. Rage consumed him and he lifted a hand engulfed in an orb of dark purple light. A ball of energy shot out from his palm and blasted aside the door before him. The force of the blast caused the door to buckle and it crashed against the far wall. Gannon cast his eyes about the cell until they alighted upon Shadow Link. ❝You,❞ he growled. ❝Shall I entertain your petty thoughts and hear your own version of your insubordination? Or rid myself of you now?❞.
The traitor sat slumped against the cold stone wall of the dungeon, sitting on the hard floor with his legs crossed in front of him, a rather casual position for a fellow who had just completely rebelled against his society. The one emotion Shadow Link had avoided, rejected, despised, had now come back to mock him. All those times he had laughed at the puny Hylians cowering at his presence, Shadow Link feeding on their fear, it now seemed like a ghost of the past. Indeed, fear was rampaging inside him, making him feel like a cornered wild animal, knowing full well that he was trapped, with no easy way out. His face was a stony mask, jaw set, eyes looking vacantly at the floor. Shadow Link had flinched when the door to his cell was blasted open, and he instantly struggled to regain his composure with an appearance of utter indifference.
❝Master-❞ his voice cracked, dry and thin. He coughed, readjusted his gaze on the floor, and tried again.
❝Your anger is understandable seeing how you have heard only one side of the story.❞ His voice strengthened, and he now shifted his gaze to the door against the wall. ❝I will tell you what happened while I was under your orders, but first, if you will be so merciful to recount to me what you were told, I will be eternally grateful.❞
If I tread carefully, perhaps I can escape this situation, buy myself some more time...
Gannon scowled as Shadow Link addressed him with "master". This fool thinks he still has the right and privilege to call me his master? He shames my name. He cleared his throat. ❝Do not take this lightly, I would normally not allow someone of your recently acquired status to ask this of me...❞ Gannon folded his hands behind his back and fixed his gaze upon Shadow Link. ❝My most trusted General, along with several of those in her command, tell me that you confessed of your wavering devotion. Not only did you make this mistake, but you did so in front of our enemies!❞ When he had begun speaking his voice was calm and level. However, at this point his anger was clear now as his voice reached shouting level. ❝And,❞ he bellowed, ❝You proceeded to attempt to defeat my forces - your own comrades.❞
Gannon drew a sharp breath. ❝And most importantly of all, you have
undermined my plan. How can I proceed forth when I cannot trust the
very person upon whom my scheme depended on?!❞ The question was
rhetorical, yet Gannon was mildly interested in what Shadow Link had to
say for himself. A fierce fire burned in his eyes and the leather
gloves he wore stretched taut upon his fists as he clenched them in an
attempt to dispel his anger.
Shadow Link shot to his feet, frustrated and prepared to defend himself. .❝I only attempted to defeat my comrades when they attacked me openly in front of the Hyrulians. I sensed the latter wanting to aid me in fending them off, and was overcome by a senseless rage. The thought of the enemy helping me caught me off guard, and the sight of seeing my own companions turn so passionately against me by mere words frightened me so that it was only instinctive to protect myself.❞
He spat at the ground, finding himself in a rising temper. '❝And my wavering devotion? All of these years I have trained with the Gerudos, fighting alongside them and never questioning orders. They are like sheep that must be herded. But their shepherd doesn't tell them the entire truth. When you sent me to Hyrule Castle with the General and her forces, she was completely uninformed of the plan, and had to ask me what we were to do before heading out.❞
At this point, Shadow Link could no longer remain stationary, and started to pace the cell like a wild cat, trapped and unpredictable, .❝Why do you hide information from us? Why did you even want to capture the King of Hyrule in the first place? So that you could become king? You are already over the Gerudos, but tell me, is the desert tribe not enough for you? Must you and your pigheadedness try and force your way into becoming ruler of the world? Even if you do succeed, restlessness will rise in your subjects, and they will rebel out of fear.❞
A harsh bark of laughter escaped Gannondorf. ❝I applaud their actions! If your words were such that the enemy felt compelled to help you, then you revealed a terrible weakness. You gave them the opportunity to undermine yourself, and as my servant, the opportunity to undermine me! I understand that their intentions were only to force you to submit so that they could detain you and allow me to punish you as I saw fit.❞ After considering Shadow Link's next bout of speech, Gannon sneered and stepped closer to Shadow Link, glaring down at him from above his hooked nose. ❝Did you expect me to draw her aside and kindly outline my plans when it was of extreme importance that we acted as quickly as possible? In times like these, plans come and go as quickly as a breath of wind. I cannot possibly hope to keep everyone up to date when the situation demands a sudden change of course! I trusted that she would follow my commands as necessary and not question. My. Authority.❞ He drew out the last few words, emphasizing their importance and irony.
When Shadow Link went so far as to insult Gannon, the king could retain himself no longer. He lashed out in an attempt to strike Shadow Link with a forceful blow to the ribs. ❝You fool. You do not even understand the true desires of one as powerful as myself. How can I be content to rule over this domain, that is so restricted. The Gerudos were once a mighty force to be contended with, and over the years their glory faded. I intend to return that glory and claim a title far greater than that of 'king'. If the king of Hyrule had been captured, there would have been no one left with the strength and numbers to oppose me!❞ The anger in his eyes transformed into a cruel, disgusting elation as Gannon thought of the power that would ultimately be his when he seized the Triforce of Wisdom and Courage from Zelda and Link. In a low voice, he muttered, ❝Once I crush the current opposition, there will be no one left who could hope to defeat me...❞ He turned his back to Shadow Link; his patience was wearing thin.
Shadow Link couldn't help but nod as Ganondorf pointed out that he had revealed his weakness, and therefore was liable to deserve any punishments inflicted upon him. As for the plan, well, Shadow Link had to admit that his master (was Ganondorf even his master anymore?) was right: there wasn't enough time to tell everyone the entirety of the plan before it was time to put actions into place. But he was not prepared for Ganondorf's outburst, and Shadow Link found himself propelled against the back wall of his cell with such force he felt a lungful of bated breath thrust from his chest with a painful huff. His right hand instinctively reached behind for the sword that wasn't there. Shadow Link clenched his fists until they were stark white from the pressure, remembering that he was disarmed once he was brought to the Gerudo Fortress. Disarmed. Defenseless. Weak. His sense of caution and alertness now sprung to a new level: he had pushed Ganondorf too far, had caused him to reveal his emotions toward his once loyal servant. It was inevitable, but Shadow Link couldn't help but try to avoid triggering outbursts such as these, for the King of the Gerudos was an extremely unpredictable man, quick to anger and quite stubborn in moving to fulfill his desires. Shadow Link's ribs ached from the impact, but he silently told himself that this was only the beginning. His voice rang quiet and waveringly calm in the attempt to hide the intense wave of emotion sweeping through him. ❝So that's how it is. You use people as tools until they are no longer needed, then dispose of them. There will be no one left who could hope to defeat me. Yes, there will be no one left who could hope to defeat you, but only because after you conquered the world, you tired of its inhabitants and destroyed them all. In your efforts for power and greatness, you will find yourself to be quite a lonely soul in a large world of charred earth and ruins, with nobody but the gxddesses themselves to comfort you.❞ He looked at Ganondorf fully in the eyes when he said this, a mixture of fear and anger contorting his features.
Gannon sneered at Shadow Link. ❝After only a short time under my wing, you think you've figured it out, eh? I employ those who I find loyal to me, and those with the proper skills for the tasks I set before them. You were one of these people.❞ His eyes narrowed as he contemplated the rest of Shadow Link's words. ❝The gxdesses are the only beings who could hope to equal my power, it's only natural that they should be the ones to comfort me.❞ A mocking tone had entered his voice. It entertained him to see Shadow Link groveling before him, clearly pained from Gannon's previous outburst, I have you in the palm of my hand... Finally, Gannon stiffened and stepped back from Shadow Link and into the hall. With a sharp clap of his hands he summoned several guards to relocate Shadow Link to a secure cell, one in which the door was not severely damaged. Before he departed, he shot a look over his shoulder, ❝Have you anything else to say?❞
Shadow Link shook his head, glaring at Gannon, and paying no heed to the guards that were entering his cell, ❝I will only say that you just gained another enemy, one that will always be a thorn in your side. If I'm alive, I will no longer support you. If dead, well, you just rid yourself of a useful tool in this game of war. Either way, you will regret losing my allegiance. But I don't think you will ever accept that fact.❞
the second plot
Vaati paced the length of the throne room, his arms crossed as he glowered at the floor. Muttered nothings escaped from clenched teeth, and his violet robes violently flapped about him as he impatiently turned and stared at the massive double doors leading into the throne room where he waited. Where is he?! Vaati thought, averting his gaze from the door and starting to pace again. Perhaps he is still having a go at Shadow Link. Ohhhh, that BRAT.
As Gannon returned above ground he hastily shoved away his angry response to Shadow Link's words. There were matters that needed to be tended to... He turned through various corridors with intentions of returning to his throne room, where he would assemble his finest warriors after a few moments of contemplation. He threw open the doors and stopped mid-step when his eyes fell on Vaati. One of his eyebrows rose a hair and a smirk flashed across his face. ❝Your timing is impeccable.❞
Instantly Vaati bowed low to the ground, kneeling as he gazed up at his master. ❝Indeed, sir? Recent events have inconvenienced us, however I am sure your Greatness will not let such meddlesome circumstances interfere with your plans. However may I be of service?❞
Gannon paused and gazed down as Vaati with a smug look upon his face. ❝As you may be aware, my latest servant,❞ he threw his hands up in the air in frustration, ❝has foiled my plans... This plan was absolutely fool proof! But I failed to see what a fool I had entrusted the task to. And now... The Hyrulians are under the impression that we are weak. I'm not about to let this idea persist.❞ Gannon was shouting now, his anger had reached a boiling point. He paused and muttered to himself under his breath before shaking his head and continuing. ❝I need their resolve to be crushed, ground out, put out of existence! Once and for all! Hyrule kingdom shall soon see it's last day! I'll not delay any longer....❞ His mind had turned to thoughts of wresting the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom from his prisoners. The tools to make him unstoppable were in his grasp.
Vaati patiently waited for his master's anger to subside, and looked cooly at the floor as he carefully thought out what he would say. ❝One of my minions spotted a dark figure attacking the Gerudos from the cloud tops, thought the situation to be suspicious, and reported it to me at the Palace of Winds. I returned here immediately.❞ Vaati then smiled manically as he remembered Ganondorf speak of the Hyrule kingdom being demolished once and for all.
❝If you wish, sir, I can stir the Hyrulians into a frenzied terror as you prepare your main attack. Just seeing the little children rising into the air along with the maidens of the pathetic town will make anyone fall to their knees in terror.❞ He chuckled, a high clear sound that he was somewhat known for. ❝If the men wish to rebel,❞ he added, ❝they will have to face me.❞
Gannon nodded while Vaati spoke. He released a menacing chuckle and smiled down at Vaati. ❝Your plan sounds immensely pleasing... I'll need at least a days time for my preparations. If I take any longer, the town is yours to do with as you please. However, I caution you to use your best judgment.❞ He clenched his fist and his eyes glazed over. Gannon caught himself and returned his attention to Vaati. ❝If you have any questions... you know where to find me.❞ He turned his back on Vaati and strode towards his throne. With a dark look cast over his shoulder, he warned, ❝I hope you realize the power that I am entrusting to you. Do not treat it lightly.❞
❝My lord, I've waited many years for this moment. Do you truly believe that I will compromise this opportunity to keep the Hyrulians in check?❞ Vaati chuckled again and bowed his respects, then swept from the room in a flutter of violet robes. At last, the events of my revenge are about to commence. I must remember to keep my wrath in check as to not do something foolish, therefore creating an opening to be defeated again. Vaati quickly scurried through the halls of Gerudo Fortress, thinking through his plan and any complications that might arise.
Shadow Link lay flat on his back on the cold stone floor of the cell he now shared with Link. He stared straight up at the ceiling, but his eyes were unfocused, so his thoughts must've been elsewhere. His arms were crossed, and his breathing was uneven, either from the stress of recent events, the cruel truth that the goddesses had arranged for him to be in the same room as the one being he passionately avoided, his still hurting blow to the chest, or a mixture of them all. As he stared at the ceiling, Shadow Link considered speaking up and talking to his counterpart, but it would be an extremely uncomfortable experience.
The soft drip of water echoed through Link's prison cell. It was lulling, but its affect had finally started to wear off. That had been his daily routine. Listing to the water's drip and counting how many times he heard it hit the floor. At first it seemed entertaining enough, but now he feared if it went on any longer he would go insane. How long had he been there? Days? Weeks? Years? No…It couldn't have been years, could it? It seemed like forever ago when he was put in the prison cell. How could he have let Ganondorf capture him? Why wasn't he there when the same happened to Zelda?
He was slumped against a wall, feeling like a failure. There was no possible way he could escape. He was trapped. He knew he shouldn't give into despair, but what could he possibly do to escape it? Why was Ganondorf playing with his mind by leaving him alone in his cell for such a long period of time? If Ganondorf wanted him d3ad, then why hadn't he k1lled him already? He again started focusing his thoughts to the constant sound of dripping water when he heard a frightfully loud sound. The only other sound that he had heard for a while, other than the water. And then voices. Yelling. He could tell it was Ganondorf…and Dark Link? His double? The words he heard were surprising, and every since the noise died down he had been dwelling on them.
❝So Shadow Link turned on Ganondorf…❞ He mumbled to himself, surprised at the hoarseness in his voice. It had been awhile since he spoke. He shook his head in confusion, and leaned it back onto his knees, trying to drift off into sleep. But soon, Link awakened to Shadow Link being thrown into his prison cell, and he wasn't sure what to think about it. Actually he was rather glad for the company. It was nice to have another presence in the room, even if it was Shadow Link. Should I say something to him? He wondered, and glanced at Shadow Link who was now lying on the floor, staring up at the ceiling. After a few more minutes of contemplating what to do he finally decided that he would speak. ❝So you turned on your master, huh?❞ And if his fellow prisoner ignored him, then he wouldn't say anything else.
Deep maroon eyes flickered from the ceiling to Link as Shadow Link couldn't help but startle slightly at the sound of his voice. The voice that was almost identical to his, but having a lighter, friendlier ring. No wonder the Hyrulians can't get enough of him, thought Shadow Link, focusing his gaze on his new...prey? Perhaps before, but now, his counterpart was more like an acquaintance. No, not even that. Shadow had heard next to nothing about Link, save from the grumblings Vaati uttered whenever he thought Shadow Link wasn't listening, and from the rumors the Gerudo women were spreading around with malice. But some of the rumors he heard were so far fetched and so indescribably strange that Shadow Link didn't know what to believe. A boy with enough power to defeat Vaati not only once, but three times? He did not doubt that Vaati had some kind of power; he had often seen him destroying entire towns and txrturing fair maidens in the attempt to find the Light Force.
But the idea that a mere boy could defeat him, and have the courage afterwards to prove meddlesome in Ganondorf's presence, that was one of the things Dark Link could not understand. There was one thing he knew for sure: Link possessed the Triforce of Courage; he did not. Obstinacy was more like it. Then again, Dark Link was just a mere shadow, and that is what made him extremely bitter towards Link, even when the two hadn't formally met, and had caused Dark Link to avoid him. Dark Link inhaled deeply, trying to stuff as much oxygen into his rattled lungs before he answered, and his eyes drifted back to the ceiling, but he watched Link out of the corner of his eye. ❝Lord Ganondorf and I had a row, yes, and at its conclusion I announced I would no longer serve him. Strange that a mere girl could plant a seed of growing doubt within me that would blossom into actions of rebellion. It was a weakness, I admit, and I must destroy it. I don't understand how the Hyrulians would accept me now, and surely Ganondorf would not permit my return. Vaati would--.❞ His voice caught, and he closed his mouth firmly as he imagined the wrath Vaati would no doubt explode into as soon as he heard the news.
No, Shadow would never be able to be near Vaati at all, for he was sure that the Wind Mage would like a "quiet" word with him. Shadow Link frowned at the ceiling, thinking he said too much, and stiffened on the floor.
Link was pleased that Shadow Link was actually speaking to him. He had half expected utter silence, or some sort of explosion telling him to be quiet. He silently listened to what Shadow Link had to say. It was interesting. He had never expected something like this from Shadow Link. He always seemed like such a loyal follower to Ganondorf. But then again, working under someone as selfish and malicious as Ganondorf would take its toll after awhile. Even the most loyal could become spiteful under the rule of someone so…power hungry.
Link shook his head. ❝No, it wasn't weakness. It was your consciousness realizing that you will gain nothing from working under Ganondorf, or Vaati. Besides, now that you're in prison I think that says something about what Ganon wants to do with you. But…❞ He sighed, ❝If we're to get out of this alive maybe I can help you. Hyrule will accept you if I say that you aren't going to cause any trouble.❞ No matter what he thought of Shadow Link, he was a potential ally. And perhaps he could be turned from his evil ways. If there wasn't a chance at that then he wouldn't be in the prison cell with him. ❝And…If you don't mind me asking, who was this 'girl'?❞ He inquired with raised brows.
Shadow Link rolled on his side and got to his feet, walking to the wall and punching it with glowering eyes. Feeling the spike of pain race across his knuckles made him feel better, but he could not resist a sudden burst of anger leaking into his words as he quietly said, ❝How do I know I can trust you? You're the Chosen Hero, the boy I was trained to loathe. Your appearance...it's almost identical to mine, but you are more....radiant. Heck, you vibrate with light and positive spirits.❞ Shadow Link punched the wall again, and laid his now hurting hand palm up against the wall. ❝I don't understand. They offered me power in return for servitude, and I have gained nothing, yet I feel that I should still stay under them. But...❞ he trailed off as the thought dawned on him, and his forehead met the wall with a light thud, ❝...I also feel that I should rebel against all that I know. It is because of that latter feeling that I am even speaking to you now.❞ He sighed, straightened, and looked sideways at Link. ❝I won't speak of the young lady I unfortunately encountered yet, for it fills me with too much emotion, another thing I normally didn't feel before. I won't say I'm sorry about it, though.❞
Link felt pity for Shadow Link as he watched him hit the wall in attempt to release some of his anger. ❝You can't. Trust is something earned, and I have yet to earn your trust. But I have never broken my word.❞ He shook his head and sighed. ❝Ganondorf's words are hollow and mean nothing. That is something you have learned the hard way. All he is after is power. And the power he seeks to acquire is something he will not be willing to share.❞ Link was silent for a moment, then he stood up and stretch. It had been a while since he stood, and the days in the prison cell had left him feeling a bit weak. ❝As you wish.❞
The brat was right. Ganondorf didn't veil any of his intentions when he admitted using Shadow Link as a tool, and Shadow Link knew it. I employ those who I find loyal to me, and those with the proper skills for the tasks I set before them. You were one of these people. Shadow Link winced, thinking of how angry the Dark Lord had been, but his thoughts ran rapid as he realized everything his double said was true. If everything Ganondorf said was without meaning, could the same be said for Vaati? He shook the thoughts from his head, reminding himself to think about it later. ❝If Ganondorf is after absolute power, which is extremely likely, then one of the first things he will do is try and obtain what he doesn't have. Which means,❞ he said, looking Link dead in the eyes, ❝that he will be coming to claim the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom from you and that girl.❞
Link's jaw tightened and he looked down at his boots. ❝I know.❞ He replied bluntly. ❝I've known this for quite awhile now. And the fact is I-I just don't want to accept it.❞ He leaned against the cold stone wall and bit his lip. ❝Ganon's vision for Hyrule is…it's sickening. I'm just not sure what I'll be able to do about it. I've failed…❞ Link felt sick to his stomach as he spoke his words. It was so unlike himself to have that attitude. But truly, what could he do? Nothing.
As soon as Vaati emerged from the Gerudo Fortress, he allowed a current of wind to sweep him up and transport him to Hyrule Field. Teleportation was extremely convenient at times. Once there, he swiftly made his way toward Hyrule Castle Town. Seeing the main gate entrance reminded him of Shadow Link's rebellion, and he snarled as he approached the four guards blocking his path. Shock and disbelief spread across their faces as they recognized the visitor. But disbelief soon gave way to terror when Vaati shook out his arms from his violet robes and held out his hands as if about to receive something. Almost immediately, the guards' hands shot up to their thrxats as the wind pressure around them increased, beginning a slow dxath by suffocation. Vaati smiled grimly as he saw this, and whispered, ❝Resistance will only make your suffering worse.❞
The guards struggled against Vaati's power, ignorant of his warning. A woman preparing to cross the bridge and exist Castle Town screamed as she saw the guards suffxcating themselves. She dropped her goods and ran in the opposite direction, her screams would surely rouse the interest of others. When she ran past a second station of guards they looked to each other before gazing into the distance. Finally they nodded to each other. One ran in the direction of the gate, and the other turned in the direction of Hyrule Castle.
❝Just what I needed,❞ Vaati said, releasing the guards and confidently strolling in the direction the woman fled. He raised his hands and hissed, ❝Minions, come!❞ From above, shrieks and moans could be heard, and down from the clouds descended a fleet of Kargaroks, about thirty in number though somewhat small in size. One, however, was massive, and seemed to be the leader. It hovered over Vaati for some moments, then led the other Kargaroks in knocking over everything in their way when flying to Castle Town square. Once there, they launched themselves at the approaching guards and tore at their helmets, trying to wrest the wxpons they held from their grasp. Vaati, meanwhile, was casually walking around Castle Town, brushing aside any guard who stood in his way (short for picking the guard up with wind and launching him into the nearest wall, food stall, or pedestrian). He chuckled to himself as children abandoned their games when they saw him approaching, screaming for all they were worth as they darted in the opposite direction. I have no need to hxrm the children now, but they may be able to assist me in the near future. Vaati thought, increasing his pace as he caught a glimpse of the woman at the bridge. ❝Hello, my darling,❞ he murmured, smiling as he thought of a way to capture her.
Hyrule citizens of every age and stature began running and screaming in every direction. Seeing the guards defenseless and defeated did nothing to help their nerve. The disruption in Castle Town easily carried to Hyrule Castle. The remaining guards posted around the castle stirred and readied themselves. Soon enough, the Kargaroks would engage with them...
Sheik emerged from the castle and gazed up at the sky, his eyes landing upon the large winged beasts swooping to and fro. Without a second thought he ran from the castle, past the terrified guards and down the path leading to Castle Town.
Before he reached the entrance to the market a Kargarok swooped down, the gust from his wings buffeted Sheik and blew dust up into his eyes. Blindly he threw a Deku nut at the creature, hoping to at least startle it. A satisfying squeal alerted him to his success. Upon entering Castle Town he was startled by the chaos that was spread. The market was in ruins and people were running, shrieking, everywhere. He searched the crowd for the source of the disturbance. It could not just be the winged creatures... Among the people he spotted disarmed guards, huddling against the walls of buildings. Then, a flash of a purple cape. It can't be... He thought. He had never seen Vaati himself, he had only heard tales of the villain.
Vaati frowned, biting his lip. The woman had slipped out of his sight. He enjoyed terrorizing the citizens of Castle Town, but his triumphant attack against the main gates had been a bit too easy. He sighed, becoming cheered again at the sound of the chaos surrounding him. ❝I must secure Castle Town before moving on to Hyrule Castle. Perhaps the town square has more worthy opponents.❞ With a bark of laughter he swiftly made his way through the market streets and piles of rubble he was responsible for, noticing that the general population had fled to the square in the hopes of finding refuge in the multi-stored shops and larger number of alleyways to duck into. As he was walking through a street that resembled a neighborhood, a little brunette girl no older than eight years old poked her head outside of a building. Vaati released a triumphant cackle, swooped over to the girl, and seized her by the hair before the poor lass could do little more than open her large brown eyes and let out a horrified squeak.
❝Why, hello honey, what's your name?❞ Vaati said, laughing again as he dragged her along. He felt two tiny fists pummeling his left hand which had its grip on her hair, and he smiled manically. ❝Children are my favorite.❞ At this, the girl started to shriek, crying as she did so. Vaati led his captive though another street, then another alleyway,, and eventually emerged at the Castle Town square. He noticed the dramatic increase of guards patrolling here and there, as well as citizens. But what made him the happiest of all was spotting a brunette woman wearing the same yellow tartan print dress as the one his captive wore.
❝Mommy!❞ shrieked Vaati's captive, struggling against him, then wincing as her hair was consequently pulled.
❝Angie! Angie!❞ The woman started crying herself, and took a hesitant step forward as she recognized Vaati's violet robes. ❝Oh, please don't take my baby!❞
The guards watching this conversation rose to action, forming a circle around Vaati and the little girl, Angie. Vaati smirked as he tightened his grip on her hair and said in a drawling voice, ❝Spare me the drama and surrender now, with nobody decent getting hurt. If you do want to resist against me and my forces, you have my word that the little girl dxes.❞
The remaining Kargarok, about eight in number, including their leader, flew up to the rooftop of an inn behind Vaati, and squawked loudly.
Let the events of my vengeance begin thought Vaati ruefully, casually stroking Angie's hair with his other hand.
Meanwhile, back in the dungeons, a hacking cough escaped Shadow Link as he started turning around to face Link. He waited until the coughing fit subsided, massaged his aching ribs, and said, ❝If there's one thing I can't stand, it's remaining stationary. Ganondorf thinks he can carry out his plans with us out of the way...❞ he trailed off as an idea suddenly dawned on him, ❝...but what if he descends to our cell to find it empty?❞ He smiled mischievously at the thought, thinking of how fun it would be to hinder Ganondorf.
Shadow Link grinned at his double and laughed again, ❝Let's get outta here!❞
❝I like your optimism, but how on earth are we supposed to get out of here?❞ He glanced around the cell, then put his hand on the wall. He lightly knocked at the stone and was quiet as the sound echoed through the prison cell. ❝Hear that? Solid stone walls. We're stuck from what I can see. But if you have a plan, I implore you do tell.❞ He crossed his arms, and leaned against the wall again. He wasn't very hopeful about escaping, but Shadow Link always did seem to have a trick or two up his sleeves.
Chamomile wiped a bead of sweat from her brow, handing a young woman a bottle of scarlet colored liquid. ❝There's a bottle of red, ma'am, thank you for your patronage!❞ She recited. After watching the woman leave, she slouched over the store counter with a quiet sigh, running her fingers through her light, blonde hair. She worked all alone here in her quaint little shop, surrounding Castle Town square, farming and selling her Chu-chus for profit. She was well known around these parts, and many times enjoyed reading stories to the children that would appear at her shop, running errands for their parents; heartwarming stories about a blue eyed fairy-boy that could cause ripples in time by playing an ocarina given to him by a beautiful princess.
The children all called her Cherry (The name Chamomile was too hard a word for their little minds to pronounce), and often told her that she looked like the "princess" she described. Cherry would laugh and send them off with their bottles of Chu Jelly, and continue with her business. Though she couldn't argue with them. She did have some Royal Family blxxd running through her veins; if she was let her hair down and stand up straight for once… Princess Zelda could have been her sister.
She jerked up at the sound of screams from outside the store walls, and gasped in shock as a crowd of people burst through the door, their eyes full of worry and pure dread as they slammed the door shut behind them and crowded around the window, pushing and shoving frantically to get a glimpse of the events outside. Cherry glanced around at the frightened people crowding her store. ❝What's going on?❞ She asked, pulling on an older man's arm. He didn't even turn around as people crowded around, chattering Cherry's ears off. ❝It's horrid!❞
❝What a heart of stone!❞
❝Poor little Angie!❞ They blurted, Cherry's eyes widening. ❝Angie!?❞ She muttered, her long, pointed ears drooping. Little Angie, the little girl she read her stories to… She shook her head. ❝Please, what happened!?❞ She cried, trying to see out the wxndow.
Her eyes narrowed as she spotted the Wind mage, holding little Angie by her hair, surrounded by guards. She snatched her satchel from the counter, and after filling it to the brim with multi colored jars, burst out the door. A frightened woman watched her go. ❝Cherry, you get back here right now!❞ The woman called in a raspy voice. Cherry glanced back at her. ❝I'll be fine. I've got to do something.❞ She waved goodbye, and joined the few people that watched the ordeal. Angie spotted her, and Cherry winked, holding her finger to her lips. She took a tiny step forward, clutching her satchel, her grey eyes glaring at the purple clad man just yards before her. She had to do something… she just didn't know what.
Shadow Link's grin widened as he watched his counterpart for his reaction. ❝I can slip into shadow, remember? This place is crawling with shadows. If I transformed into a shadow and slipped through the bars, I would be able to escape.❞ He bit his lip, noticing a flaw in his wonderful little plan. ❝I was going to grab you before I transformed so you would become part of my shadow, but now I'm not sure how a creature of the light would be able to handle the pressure of the darkness that would appear as soon as you became a shadow....❞ Shadow Link scratched his head and scowled, trying to think of a loophole. Perhaps if Link didn't care about the consequences....
Vaati's eyes flickered from the guards, to Angie, to the furious but pretty young woman that had just joined the scene. He did a double take as he noticed her resemblance to Princess Zelda. As alarm and surprise raced through his system, Vaati's fingers clenched around Angie's hair. I thought Lord Ganondorf had captured the princess and the boy... His eyes narrowed as he closely scrutinized the young woman. Surely the Dark Lord's security hadn't slipped that low...right? Vaati now hailed Cherry with suspicion and disbelief written on every inch of his face. ❝Madam! Come, join my little welcome party! If you don't mind me asking, who are you?❞
Cherry's eyes narrowed as she glared at the Wind Mage. She shook her head. ❝I was just about to ask you the same question.❞ She said, standing up straight. ❝What a way to make an impression here, hmm? Abducting a defenseless little girl… even if you are some kind of miscreant, I'd imagine you wouldn't stoop THAT low.❞ She muttered quietly, her eyes not showing any sign of fear, though she had to keep herself from shaking. What have I gotten myself into!? She thought, glancing back and forth between the crowds of bystanders, gripping her satchel so hard her fingers turned an unhealthy pink.
The Wind Mage's nostrils flared as the young woman's ignorance stung his pride. ❝You should indulge yourself in this land's history, my dear. Surely you've heard of the violet clad sorcerer that stole a magical cap, stroke terror in the hearts of any decent man, kidnapped fair maidens, was defeated several times, and now has returned once again? I am the great Vaati, Lord Ganondorf is my master, and if you will be so kind to stay out of my way while I bring ultimate ruin to this pathetic town of yours, I just might spare your life.❞
Link raised his brows. It was a good plan, and it would work. He was a little surprised. ❝I would rather enter the shadows for a little while, then have Ganondorf steal away the Triforce of Courage, and claim the whole of Hyrule with it. It may not be a, uh, pleasant experience, but it will be worth getting out of here. I cannot let Ganon win. I will not. As long as there is hope I will cling to it.❞ He felt a sudden burst of life that he hadn't felt since he was thrown into the prison cell. All of the despair that he has been feeling for the entire time he was locked up had vanished. He was going to escape! He couldn't help but smile slightly. The thought rejuvenated him. He would stop Ganondorf once and for all. But then a thought entered his mind. ❝Wait…What about Zelda?" He asked, with worry coating his every word. "Do you know what has happened to her?!❞
His dark maroon eyes flickered to the ground as soon as Link mentioned the princess's name. Shadow Link remembered teasing Zelda when she was being held captive under Vaati; now he felt mortified about having treated her in that manner. ❝Zel-...I cannot fathom where the Dark Lord is holding the princess, but I am almost positive that she is in a different floor level than us, if not in an entirely different location...❞ He grunted, taking a step towards Link and meeting Link's gaze. ❝But sitting around talking won't get us anywhere. Come, let's introduce you to the shadows!❞
Cherry winced at the boy's words. Clearly if there was to be a fight, she would be overwhelmed, all alone … but she wasn't alone. She reached into her satchel, bringing out a large jar of grey substance. ❝Like I would let you do that.❞ She muttered, her voice shaking. ❝Let the girl go. Really, what are you gaining from all of this?❞ She demanded, her voice louder now. She placed her shaking hands protectively over the container, glaring at Vaati with an expression somewhat in between terror and rage.
Vaati frowned deeply. Another inconvenience, he thought. He shook his head, as if sympathetic that he had to teach Cherry a lesson in respect. ❝My dear, what are you going to do with that dreadfully ugly bottle of goop? By talking to you now, I'm merely wasting my time and toying with you. I like playing with my prey before dinnertime, but wasting time? That will never do...❞ He raised his arm and cocked his head, eyes fixed on Cherry, ready to whisper a string of words that would either blast the bottle to smithereens or knock Cherry over, whichever he was in the mood for. And yet, he was curious to see what little resistance Cherry had to offer. It was cute. It was harmless. And it would still lead to Hyrule Castle Town becoming obliterated, if all went according to plan.
Dear goddesses, this isn't working... Cherry thought, glaring at Vaati. If I could just figure out how to make him let go of Angie... I'd figure out the rest fine. She tapped her fingernails on the jar impatiently. She opened her mouth slightly to speak, but anxiously shut it again, afraid that she might say something to anger the purple-clad boy. The jar wriggled slightly, and she cupped her hands over the lid with a nervous smile. She felt like chucking the jar at his face, but she hesitated, bracing herself.
Getting bored, Vaati sniffed, allowing a gust of wind to start hurtling around them. The gust became stronger, repelling anyone who tried to come near himself and Angie. A sudden burst of wind shot out and blasted Cherry with enough force to make her lose her balance, even knock her over if she wasn't paying attention. Angie stared at Cherry with wide brown eyes, shouting pleas for help and protection that were lost in the wind. Vaati loosened his grip on Angie's hair and let go, smiling broadly as the little girl started rising into the air with the wind, flailing about and screaming all the while. As Angie floated above a medium sized building, Vaati averted his gaze to Cherry. ❝Darling, don't worry about little Angie. She'll be perfectly safe at the Wind Palace with the other girls. There's lots of food, toys, books, beds, and other treats that make me wonder why all of you young women don't want to join them. Unless, of course, you want to take a little hour's tour?❞ He paused, chuckling. ❝I promise to have the wind bring you back to Castle Town as the hour is up. I'm a man of my word, contrary to some your beliefs.❞
Link's heart dropped as he heard the news. She might not even be here… He glanced down at the floor, then to the prison cell. But what if she was there? He couldn't leave her! He wouldn't abandon her! ❝Wait! W-we have to look for her! What if she is here?❞ His face was now contorted into a frown. The thought of possibly leaving Zelda in the enemy's fortress while he escaped made him feel sick. But part of him was telling him that he was being foolish. Ganondorf would be there soon, and they needed to escape. If he was caught, and captured again, then he would lose the Triforce of Courage, and his enemy would proceed to take the Triforce of Wisdom from Zelda. Ganondorf's plan would then be complete and he would destroy all of Hyrule. Link put his head in his hands. He didn't know what to do. Leaving Zelda was against his whole being, but it might be for the good of Hyrule. As long as he or Zelda was not in Ganondorf's grasp then he wouldn't be able to complete his plan. As long as one piece of the puzzle was missing there was still hope.
Shadow Link sighed, shaking his head and grimacing, ❝We'll look around here for Princess Zelda, but if we can't find her after a while, could we move elsewhere? Staying at the Gerudo Fortress and knowing he is still here gives me the willies...❞ Derp add more.
