JoeMeek the Fire Grarrl homepage

Greetings, guest, and welcome to the Grarrlography page.

Hello, everyone. My name's JoeMeek. I am a Fire Grarrl, and I'd like to tell everyone what they need to know about my species in order to keep a Grarrl as a pet.

Why would someone want to adopt a Grarrl?

Grarrls make great pets due to our natural fierceness and loyalty. We're cheap to feed if that's a concern due to our natural ability to eat anything in Neopia. We're also tenacious when confronted with a problem, and we don't have fur so we can't shed all over the furniture.

How many different kinds of Grarrls are there?

There are currently 25 different types of Grarrls known to exist: Red, Yellow, Blue and Green Grarrls are the most common.

Other colors that Grarrls have been observed in are: Brown, Checkered, Electric, Fire, Ghost, Gold, Purple, Rainbow, Shadow, Skunk, Spotted, Starry, Striped and White.

At least two variant subspecies of Grarrls exist: the Darigan and Mutant Grarrls share a roughly similar skin tone and each variant also has wings and spikes along their back and tail as well as horns on their heads. Toe claws (which other types of Grarrl lack) are on both types of Grarrls' feet as well.

The Island, Halloween and Desert Grarrls have distinct scale coloration as well, and they wear clothing (which the other types of Grarrls don't care for).

Here is a picture of a Grarrl hatchling. All Baby Grarrls are red due to the high iron content in the yolk of a Grarrl egg--it makes their skin red, although in many cases this red tint fades away after a few weeks. If you have any color grarrl other than Red, this is what happened. If you have a Red Grarrl, don't worry. This is perfectly normal and poses no danger to your pet.

Lastly, the Invisible Grarrl is also a subtype of Grarrl, but nobody really knows what they look like for obvious reasons.

Where do Grarrls come from?

Grarrls originally came from Tyrannia, but a large population of Grarrls made their way to Neopia Central years ago. In fact, the Grarrl was the first species of Neopet to be discovered, and now there are more than two million of us!

When is Grarrl Day celebrated?

The happiest day of the Neopian calendar is celebrated every year on the fourth day of Collecting, or October 4 if you're not from Neopia. Last year there were five new looks for Grarrls (Baby, Checkered, Halloween, Spotted and Skunk), a dozen new foods, and new Battledome gear and moves available for Grarrls. I hope that they discover Orange and Maraquan Grarrls this year. Bear in mind that Grarrl Day falls on a weekend this year and in Year Six, so that it might be celebrated on the Friday before the actual day.

How big are Grarrls?

Most Grarrls are about 100-110cm (just over three feet) tall, more or less. If you had another pet that you decided to turn into a Grarrl it will stay at its previous height. As far as weight is concerned, we start out at about 120 pounds but too many fatty foods can increase that.

How many teeth do Grarrls have?

Grarrls have 34 teeth—18 in their top jaw and 16 in their lower jaw (according to the animation of a Red Grarrl from the "all pets" page). Their teeth all fit together like gears meshing, or like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This allows them to generate phenomenal force on the object they're eating. If your Grarrl loses a tooth, don't worry. They grow back through the course of your pet's lifespan, no matter how many teeth they lose.

Can Grarrls really eat anything?

Grarrls are capable of eating anything in Neopia that isn't nailed down--food, furniture, petpets, books, soap, Battledome gear, Paint Brushes, toys, and of course any kind of food.

How is it that Grarrls can eat anything, including nonfood items?

Grarrls have extremely powerful digestive systems as well as a rare enzyme that allows them to break down rocks, metal, wood and plastic for any nutritional content that these things may have.

Why do Grarrls eat everything?

Because it's there! Seriously, Grarrls realized a long time ago that a nice Bronto Bite tastes a lot better than a book. But when you don't have a Bronto Bite around it's better to eat a book or a plushie than to go hungry.

My pet and I want to know more about Grarrls. How can we do this?

You're in luck—there are nine different books that you can get right now that will teach you everything you need to know about Grarrls. In picture order from left to right, they are: Grarrls are Great, Grarrl Mythology, Grarrl Comics, Grarrl Picture Book, The Grarrl Who Crushed Tyrannia, Grarrl Keno, Teeth Sharpening Techniques, Grarrg the Great, and Roars and Grrrs.

Can Grarrls get a Gourmet Club point for eating furniture or books with a rarity between 90 and 100?

No, they can't. Although this upset some of the Grarrls I've talked to, we all realize that it's the only way to keep the gourmet contest fair for pets that weren't lucky enough to be born a Grarrl.

Do Grarrls eat dung?

I never have, but Grarrls are perfectly capable of eating dung. It might even taste better than some of the Gross Foods, but I am in no hurry to find out.

Is there anything Grarrls don't eat?

This depends on the individual Grarrl. I won't eat a TeaLeef, even though it's a gourmet food. It's the same with Popcorn--ugh! Trying to get the popcorn hulls out from between my teeth and gums made me swear off that food forever. Remember that every Grarrl is different and some might not like my favorite foods, while I might not enjoy theirs.

What are the various Grarrl-themed foods? Are any of them considered Gourmet items?

There are more than a dozen different Grarrl-themed foods. The Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate and Orange Chocolate Grarrls were the first chocolates to be shaped like a Grarrl.

Later on, the Grarrl Gobstopper was created. Many of these use ingredients that other Neopets (or any owners) might find completely bizarre, but Grarrls enjoy the subtle flavors that are found in these items. Left to right, they are the Fishy Delight, Furry Fury, Chunky Cherry, Mustard Mayhem, Omnipotent Onion_ Rotten Egg and Fluff n Stuff Grarrl Gobstoppers. The onion and the Fluff N Stuff gobstoppers are gourmet foods as well; if your pet is trying for Gourmet points these are two more foods to look for.

Last year for Grarrl Day several foods were released. The Gooey Chocolate, White Chocolate and Strawberry Grarrls are a sticky treat. Make sure your Grarrl washes its hands after eating one of these or you'll spend at least an hour scrubbing the surfaces of your Neohome. The Chocolate Grarrl on a Stick is just as bad for your pet, but at least it's a little less messy. The Mighty Grarrl Burger is a rarity—a completely vegetarian meal for one of Neopia's most infamous carnivores.

The Strawberry Grarrl Cupcake, Grarrl cooki with Sprinkles and Raspberry Swirl Grarrl cooki are baked goods that any Neopet would love. The Caramel Cream Grarrl Foot, Chocolate Grarrl Tail, White Chocolate Grarrl Teeth and Chocolate Grarrl Ice Cream are the most recent Grarrl-themed desserts.

Do Grarrls ever get full?

Oh yes. I'm full right now. I just ate an entire Joint of Ham and a Coconut Cocktail.

What is your favorite food?

It has to be the Bronto Bite. They're made so that Grarrls can pick them up with both hands and eat them. After you're done with the meat you can eat the bone as well!

What do Grarrls do for fun?

I like to read and eat Gourmet foods, but other Grarrls do other things--anything from hiking through Tyrannia to starting a garage band. We're also pretty good in the Battledome after we're properly trained.

What weapons can Grarrls use in the Battledome?

In addition to the fun things like Hand Painted Scarabs and Clockwork Grundos, there's quite a variety of weapons that only a Grarrl can wield. The Grarrl Gauntlet was the first one that only a large-bellied bipedal dinosaur could use. Two years ago on Grarrl Day, the Grarrl Tailspike, Grarrl Boot, Grarrl Claw and Grarrl Helmet were released.

Last Grarrl Day they came out with the Grarrl Shield of Terror, Grarrl Terror Blade, Grarrl Claws of Doom and the Pocket Gnashers as well. This Grarrl Day I'm hoping for something really cool like a full suit of Grarrl armor.

Do you have any grooming tips for Grarrl owners?

Yes. First of all, the Green Grarrl Brush is not designed to be used as a bath brush. It is meant to be used on your pet's scales after he or she is already cleaned up. The soft bristles of the brush work to make the scales glossy, not clean. Second, make sure you brush your Grarrl's teeth at least twice a day. Good dental health is extremely important to Grarrls. Lastly, don't bother buying Grarrl Hair Goo. As a reptile, I don't have any hair. Neither does any Grarrl other than the Darigan one.

Why is there Grarrl Hair Goo, then?

I really don't know. If you send a letter to editor@neopets.com they might answer it in the New Neopian Times, though. Then I can put the answer here.

How old is the oldest Grarrl in Neopia?

I'm not certain, but maybe that Grarrl's owner will get in touch with me and I'll find out!

What's the most fun thing about being a Grarrl?

I'd say the most fun thing about being a Grarrl is playing games with my owner, with a late lunch being a close second.

Can I turn my pet into a Grarrl?

Certainly! You want to get one of these potions if you like the idea of a regular Grarrl. They will turn any Neopet that drinks them into a Red, Yellow, Green or Blue Grarrl.

If you want a more exotic look for your new Grarrl you should try to get one of these potions. They'll change your pet into a White, Striped, Rainbow, Starry, Electric or Fire Grarrl. My personal recommendation is to make a Fire Grarrl, of course.

And if you want to turn your Neopet into a Mutant Grarrl, just give it the Grarrl Transmogrification Potion to drink!
