A darkly colored Peophin throws her oddly-masked head up, startled. Her bloodshot eyes seem to bore into your own normal eyes through the holes in the bone-like mask that covers her entire face, and you start to back away, feeling as if you are not welcome, but her gaze shifts away and she sighs.Don't go. She murmurs, her tone just high enough that you can barely catch it. The mare motions for you to sit, and she makes herself comfortable.Let me tell you my story…

. Her Story .

The first time I opened my eyes, I was in a bright patch of salty seagrass, surrounded by banks of sand. The grass was a rich emerald green, the miniscule drops of dew that clung to the stalks sparkled like diamonds in the dancing rays of sunlight, and the grains of sand drifted gently with the wind. As my head tilted backward, my gaze switched to the brilliant, cloudless, periwinkle-blue sky. At that moment, a large bird soared overhead, its wings stretched to their utmost limit. My tiny mouth fell open in awe, and immediately, I wanted to be just like that bird—free. My train of thought was quickly interrupted by a nudge from my mother, who was lying next to me. She gracefully arose, leaving but a small indention in the grass. Her velvety nose pushed me gently, silently telling me to get up. My gangly front legs unfolded, and I shakily stood. After a few failed attempts to walk, I tottered to her side and we set off toward her—now our—home.

As darkness began to bestow its frightening shadow upon the beach, we slipped into the glittering ocean with its gentle, rolling waves. At first I was afraid, but after seeing my mother bravely splash through it, I plunged in after her. It took me a few minutes to get used to swimming, but we were quickly on our way. I stayed practically glued to her side, as the lighting was dim and I had no idea what surprises this ocean might have in store for a newborn Peophin filly. As the darkness finally settled into an inky black, I suddenly lost sight of my mother. Immediately, a squeak of alarm whistled through my mouth, and my body became rigid. My cries got louder, and all of a sudden, I heard my mother's outraged neigh. I struggled to swim toward her, to safety, but I found myself entangled. In what, I had no idea, for it was pitch black and my eyesight had not yet adjusted to this watery world of darkness. My mother's frantic screams continued to pierce my ears, and I fought even harder against the tight ropes. However, I suddenly found myself being lifted up and out of the water, where something sharp was plunged into my neck, which caused me to black out.

When I came to, I was once again in darkness. I jerked my head up and tried to move backward, only to find that I could not move. I twisted my neck to the side, and heard the tinkle of, though I didn't know what it was at that time, heavy metal chains and felt the loops dig into my neck. My feet began to rise in protest, but I found that they, too, were bound in chains. I began to panic, and frantically looked around. Now that my vision had somewhat adjusted to the darkness, I could see a few outlines in the shadowy… building? Cave? I wasn't sure what exactly I was in. I heard the snort of a creature beside me, and my body tensed up instinctively.

Wh--who's there? I squeaked nervously, not yet accustomed to using my vocals.

I'd like t' know the same 'bout yerself," a heavy, country-sounding voice slurred back, filled with what sounded like utter boredom.

My head tilted to the side, wondering what sort of creature was in the confined space beside me. I… er… I don't have a name. It was true, my mother had not yet given me a name when I was, apparently, captured.

No name?" the voice muttered, a hint of surprise lacing the edges of the creature's voice. Y' sound like a wee babe. How old are ya, anyway?"

Um…" I struggled to think. I was born… yesterday?"

WHAT?" I jumped at the sudden roar of outrage from the creature, my body slamming into the panels of the tiny pen I was chained in. I heard my neighbor muttering almost inaudibly, his obvious snorts of outrage showing his displeasure. They keep bringin' 'em in earlier n' earlier," the creature sighed, and I could easily imagine it shaking its head in sadness. I hate t' be th' one t' tell ya, doll, but don't plan on gettin' free soon… the owner o' this place is one stingy, selfish collector."

A collector?" I replied, confused. Of what?"

Uhh… well… he collects Peophins like you an' me. See, you an' I, we're a special sort o' Peophin. Very rare, spose'ly. This guy, th' collector and owner o' this gig, collects us t' show off t' 'is… clients. He, er, sells us on th' Black Market." The creature, now obviously a Peophin like myself, sighed again Once yer here, ya prob'ly won't ever see yer fam'ly again. We 'special' Peophins go from owner t' owner without a though in th' world 'bout how we feel. Better enjoy this moment o' peace, 'cause it don't happen often."

I didn't really understand. So, basically, I was now to be sold? I cringed slightly at this thought. I didn't even know what that meant, being as I was barely two days old, but from what the Peo beside me said, it apparently meant that I'd see several different "owners" over the next few years. A lifetime of switching hands didn't appeal to me at all. I glanced over to the stallion, my gaze troubled. Is it possible to, um, escape?"

The stallion uttered a wheezy laugh and shook his dark head. Possible? Hah! Only if y' can rid yerself o' these heavy chains." He jerked his neck to the side and strained against the iron links for emphasis, and shrugged. A quiet whimper slipped through my muzzle, and I turned away. So, it was hopeless. I'd be stuck in a collection for the rest of my life. The stallion noticed my sudden emotion change, and stretched his neck as far as the chains would allow over our corral's partitions. Oh, 'ey, doll, I didn't mean to upset ya. Chances are, they'll sell ya with an older Peophin. Ya ain't but a foal… Oh, an' by th' way, I'm Whyasa, but you can call me Asa." The faded black stallion coughed violently, then quickly shushed me. For at that moment, the door to the shed we were in opened, sending in scattered rays of dim sunlight and highlighting the silhouette of a burly human. I flinched to the side instinctively, for the aura of this man seethed with anger. I heard Asa's mutters of reassurance beside me, but I was still frightened. When the human turned toward us, a cruel smile creased his face. I'll take the filly and the stallion. He said to the second man, who had just walked up behind him. Nice choice. Filly's fresh from the ocean an' the stallion's a strong ol' fella, good for the fields. Both men laughed, and a harsh, stiff halter was shoved over my head, as well as Asa's. I heard his quiet sigh, and he mumbled to me to 'not fight 'em'. I was yanked out of the pen, my legs and neck still bound in the heavy chains. A blindfold was abruptly tied over my eyes, and I was jerked away toward my unknown future, Asa gliding glumly behind me.

It had been… a few years since that day of doom. Asa and I were both taken to a shabby little barn that reeked of mold, and once again chained up in the dark. Asa was occasionally taken out to help harvest the Kelp gardens, but he always returned out of breath and drenched with sweat. We were given very little food and a mere amount of dirty water… just enough to survive. Asa was lucky, in a way. He was not abused as much as I, but I knew it hurt him to see me get beaten. He said I didn't deserve a life like this, and that someday, somehow, he would break us out of here, no matter what it took. By this time I had very little sanity left, and spent most of my time swaying violently on my forelegs.

And suddenly, one day, he got the chance. A new farmhand had been hired, and he was a small guy, not very muscular. Asa and I had plotted together for a few days, finally deciding that when the 'hand came into the barn to give us our daily, tiny proportions of food and water, Asa would strike out at the boy with his powerful tail and fins, hoping to strike him. If Asa succeeded, he would somehow break his chains, then mine, and we would escape. Against all odds, it actually did turn out somewhat similar to our original plans. Asa was being brought back in from the fields, though, when he chose to strike. The small farmhand was quickly overtaken by Asa's powerful legs and tail, and fell to the side, unconscious. Asa pawed furiously at my chains, finally snapping them at a few points. Nothing could be done about the remains that still wrapped around my neck and legs, so we quickly snuck out of the barn and into the wide open ocean. Below, we saw the other Peophins still being worked in the field, though now, I had no care for them. Asa whispered to me that we should go, and right as we took off, a worker in the Kelp field spotted us and yelled, "Loose Peos!" This quickly turned our escape into swimming for our lives, and after dark, we finally lost our pursuers. We swam a bit farther just to make sure a straggler hadn't caught up, and swam into a small cave at the bottom of the ocean.

That was too close, Asa panted, settling next to me. I swayed with the current, my short, tousled mane sticking out in all directions. My face had been torn up during our flight, when our pursuers tried to corner us in a thicket of thorny Kelp, and small rivulets of scarlet blood trailed from the tattered patches of skin. I looked horrible, and surely my face would never heal completely. Asa said nothing more, and we fell asleep. When we awoke, we cautiously made our way toward what we thought was Mystery Island, hoping to find someone who could help us. Asa had to constantly assist me as we swam, for my vision had deteriorated from being in the darkness so long, and my insane mind constantly left me drifting aimlessly and shouting random things into the empty space. We eventually reached Mystery Island, where Asa found a kind girl to help us. She ended up adopting Asa and, though I denied it, me, as well. I stayed as far as I could from the girl, never again to trust her species. The only friend I had was Asa, and the small Chumablah that had been given to me. My deranged mind always brought stares my way, but I didn't notice them. The main thing was that I was out of that horrible prison, and was promised a permanent home with the girl, along with Asa, if I wanted. My vision is still blurred, however, and my facial scars have been covered with a mask that was made especially for me. I can't complain, I guess. This life is a lot better than my old one. My chains have since rusted away, and Amy's grey Peophin, Consasda, has become like a real brother to me. Asa lives with a few of my owner's other Peophins, so I do not see him as much anymore… but I suppose Consasda makes up for the lack of my old friend.

Name : Jezebelline, dubbed so by that cruel being who first took me from my mother. I go by Bell though, for my real name is a mouthful.
Species : Peophin
Gender : Mare
Age : Four years
Height : Four feet at the withers (shoulder)
Weight : 800 pounds
Body Type : Small, Stocky, Drafty (think of a Clydesdale/small horse cross)
Color : My main body color is a dark purplish-blue, and my markings are a light lavender color. My mane and 'tail' are a dark purplish.
Accessories" : I had a thick chain loop around my neck at one point-- a reminder of my darker days. Smaller loops of chains were also wrapped around my forelegs, but both have since rusted or fallen away. A dark golden mask with a curved "rhinoceros horn" covers most of my face; and its main purpose is to hide the horrid scars beneath.
Persona : I am… insane. That's about the only way to describe myself. Since I was but a very young foal, I was kept chained up in the darkness, and abused daily until I was three and a half years old. I am… very timid around… well… everything. It takes a while to gain my trust. Because I was in the dark for so long, my eyes are permanently damaged; the pupil is always a tiny pinprick, and the whites are usually bloodshot. I tend to avoid direct sunlight, perhaps because I had grown so accustomed to darkness, and it hurts my eyes. I used to not say much at all, if anything, when I was first rescued…. But I am learning to socialize thanks to the efforts of my family, particularly Consasda. However, I am still far from a social butterfly.

. Skylar .

Skylar is Bell's petpet Chumablah. She looks evil and mean, but she's really a quiet and sweet little creature. She does not say much, and when she does, it is usually in a whisper that only Bell can hear or understand. The two just seem to get each other.

. The (Neo) Family .

Consasda is the rebel of the family, so to speak. He is usually out roaming Krawk Island with his best friends Tes and Moon. He isn't a very sociable guy around those he's unfamiliar with, but when we're together, Consasda seems to understand some of what I feel, for he was an 'orphan,' too. Consasda and I have become very close, almost to the point of the brother-sister bond. He is quick to defend me if someone dares to point out my scars or my mask, and will not back down.

The most recent member of the family, Nep is an easy peophin to get along with. He is what you'd call the class clown, and is always cracking jokes. Nep will go up to pets he has never seen before and just strike up a conversation. This Faerie Peophin is somewhat embarrassed of his "girly" color, but he loves being able to zoom around above all the other Peos' heads. He is not easily offended, and ignores those that make fun of him. I think he's a big sissy, but I won't say so aloud. I tend to ignore him and his… er… loud mouth. Nep is also a huge perfectionist, and won't stand for bad grammar… which is probably the reason he and the country-accented Asa don't get along. But Nep won't hesitate to correct you if you say, for example, your instead of you're, because your" is possessive and "you're" means "you are. It's kind of ridiculous… but that is the only pet peeve Nep has, surprisingly.

I don't know much at all about this ghostly pirate. I have never seen a draik before, and I have really only seen Moon once or twice, even though we're family. Moon lives on Krawk Island, wandering each day with Tes and occasionally Consasda. The few times I have seen her, I was with Consasda. I can't say I'm a huge fan of Moon's slightly snobby attitude, and I doubt we'll ever really get along well.

Tesani, more commonly known as Tes, is a kind and gentle soul, despite his pirate status. I have met him a few times, and he is everything Consasda told me about. Never once did an unkind word slip from his mouth, and he was not unlike a grandfatherly figure.

I have met Lucky a few times, and she is quite easy to get along with. Lucky is a very caring Uni, and immediately asked me what she could do me. I find Lucky's overprotective stance a bit annoying, but to be honest, I have never felt so welcome as I do when Lucky is around. The more we meet, the more I like her.

I find the fact that this creature is always changing amusing. When he comes home from the lab after changing genders or changing to a girly color, I can't help but double over with laughter. Rof is pretty much the only one in the family who knows I am truly crazy… the rest just think I'm easily amused. I still don't care much for him.
