| It was indeed a dark and dreary night, and I don't remember what it was that gave me the feeling I should go for a late night walk. Ignoring the warnings of going out alone at night, I grabbed my scythe, donned a pair of headphones, and headed out. Stories of vampires and werelupes played back in my mind, and I remembered that it was unwise to venture into the back streets after nightfall. I kept mostly to the more lighted areas, eyes searching but ears blocked by boisterous music. I went to my usual spot... the fountain in the park. I watched the colorful jets of water jump up and fall down over and over in their never-ending cycle as I dangled my toes into the cool water. The techno in my ears boomed a steady beat in my brain, and I caught myself moving to the music once or twice. Between songs number four and number five (or was it number five and number six?) the pause allowed me to hear the more natural sounds of my surroundings. Something moved behind me and I turned to see what it was. It was a cybunny. She was wrapped in a black cloak, but the colors of the water reflected off her pearly white fur, creating an aura of magic about her. I just stared a moment, and she stared right back. She was the most beautiful creature I had seen in a long time and I didn't want to take my eyes off of her. "I haven't seen you around before," I said, finally breaking the silence. I grinned at her, but she looked back at me a moment, then lowered her eyes. "I haven't lived here long, and I try to stay to myself," she told me. I picked up a hint of ice in her voice. She was probably trying to sound cold so I'd go away, but I never give up on a pretty lady so easily. I laughed. "Stay to yourself, eh?" I asked her. "Well that's no fun. Perhaps we can spend some time together and I can show you around? Maybe you'll learn to make friends." I grinned my most charming grin, hoping I'd get her to at least take some of the edge off of her voice. It didn't have the intended effect. She stood up, turned her back on me, and began walking away at a brisk pace. "Leaving already?" I asked. "But we only just met!" I hopped down from my seat on the edge of the fountain and followed her. She wound a path through town, but I stayed at her heels the whole way. She was silent while we were walking, and once again there was a lack of conversation. I broke the quiet. "So... where are we going?" I asked, putting forth my grin once again. She ignored me completely. I sighed and kept walking. Another long pause in the chatter ensued. Finally I decided on a more direct approach and took a few steps forward to cut her off. She stopped walking and gave me her iciest look yet. "How come you're ignoring me?" I asked, giving her my best pity face. "That's not nice, you know." She stood where she was, her glare burning into my eyes. Something was going on in her brain, but I didn't know what she was thinking. She tested me and tried to sidestep by me. I matched her step and continued to stand in her way. "Get out of my way," she said forcefully. I blinked at her and tried to keep the words from stinging too badly. I got the impression already that she didn't like me, but how can she not like me if she doesn't know me? I stayed in her way. "Not until you answer my question," I said playfully, bringing my grin back. She glowered at me and growled. I thought she was going to hit me or something. I didn't waver, though. "I just want to walk," she answered. "I haven't had the chance just to walk around in a long time. Please allow me to do at least that." She sidestepped one more time, and I allowed her to pass and walk by me. It wasn't long before I was back by her side though. No pretty girl shakes me that easily. "Maybe some other day then?" I asked casually. I saw her jaw tighten and knew she wasn't going to put up with me much longer. I thought I saw her glance at me, but it was dark and I couldn't really tell. She sighed. "Maybe some other day," she replied. Satisfied with her answer, I gave her a final grin, a polite bow, and turned heel for home. A few days passed and I didn't see the cybunny again. I felt stupid for not asking her name. Such a beautiful creature should have a beautiful name, right? I went over a few possible guesses in my mind and decided that I'd have to look for her again to find out. I waited each night for her by the fountain, but she didn't show up. Nearly to the point of giving up, I waited early one evening in my usual spot by the fountain. It was late in the day and the sun was beginning to set. I took my post on the edge of the fountain and dangled my toes into the water, trying not to kick in time with the music that was once again beating its way out of my headphones. Orange and yellow streaks made their way across the sky, and I figured she wasn't going to show up. I hopped down off the fountain and took a stroll around the park. A while later, after the sun had gone down, I made my way back to the fountain with thin hopes the cybunny might be there. My heart skipped a beat when I saw her form on the bench. I crept up to her, but she was sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, I took my seat on the edge of the fountain once again and waited. I was only there about ten minutes when movement in my peripheral told me she was awake. I turned to face her, and grinned my usual charm in her direction. She was slouched on the bench and didn't make any move to make herself more proper in my presence. I grinned. "You were sleeping," I said. "I didn't want to wake you." I removed my headphones, put them in a random pocket, and slipped next to her on the bench. "I was waiting for you here every night," I said quickly. I wanted to get the words out before I lost my nerve to say them. I don't know why it was so hard, but nonetheless, it had been said. Startled, the cybunny looked at me. "Waiting for me?" she asked, surprise apparent in her voice. My grin stayed where it was as I tried to read her features. Instead of thinking however, I could only concentrate on how beautiful she was. Clearing my thoughts, I swallowed and continued to speak. "Yes, I was waiting. Does that surprise you?" Our eyes met again, and it seemed neither one of us wanted to turn away. I was lost in her gaze, and her in mine. I inched my hand over to hers on the bench, but she pulled away quickly. "Why?" she whispered. She turned her head and looked back into the fountain. I shrugged. "You look like you could use a friend," I answered, trying to think of the most proper thing to say. She paused, then shifted in her seat. Her foot brushed up against my leg and it sent a shiver through my body. Was she hitting on me? "Ever been in a castle?" she asked suddenly. I was caught off guard by the question and shifted uncomfortably on the bench. What was she getting at? I kept smiling at her anyway, trying to hide my uncertainty. "I haven't had the opportunity, no," I answered. As an afterthought, I added eagerly, "have you got a castle?" Her reply was devilish. She mirrored my grin and nodded. I didn't know what brought about her change of feelings toward me, but I didn't have time to ponder. She led the way, and I followed her to her doorstep. I crept out before dawn broke the next morning, leaving my cybunny friend to sleep the rest of the night on her own. I wasn't sure what brought about her strange behavior, but I wasn't complaining. I pondered all the way home, but the thoughts didn't really bother me. I was happy for the first time in a while. I spent the next day alone, trying to collect stray thoughts and figure things out. With no luck, I set out once more to wander around in a more natural setting. Meaning, of course, I went down to the park. I slept on the bench for a few hours, only to realize it was already late afternoon. I decided to head back home, but figured I'd pick up some groceries first. I took a turn toward the marketplace. The sun was setting beyond the horizon by the time I finished shopping. Lugging my bags, I finally started in the direction of home. A certain cybunny was the last person I expected to see in the marketplace, but I guess it was by chance that we ran into each other yet again. A bit of conversation passed between us, and we headed for my place to drop off the groceries. We walked back to the place where we first met, but by the end of the night we were back at her castle. I awoke away from home yet again with my questions still unanswered. I didn't know her name, and as far as I knew, she didn't know mine. I slipped away from her castle and made my way home, brimming with questions once more. The next few days found us together on the bench in the park. Rain fell gently, but neither of us were bothered by it. Her warmth spread to me, and my warmth spread to her. I hugged her tighter, hoping for a return hug. Instead, for the first time since we met, she pushed me away. I was confused. "Have you realized that I've known you for nearly a month and don't know your name?" she asked me. I blinked once or twice, then realized that she was right. I smiled broadly at her. "I was wondering when you were going to ask!" I said. "I suppose we were just caught up in other things and it never came up. My name is Jadeyr." It felt strange introducing myself to someone I felt so close to. She repeated my name out loud a few times. "Interesting name," she said finally. "I'm Maerunis." She fell back into my arms in another hug. "Beautiful name," I whispered in her ear. The raindrops around us began to fall harder, and I paused to glance at the sky. "The rain is getting heavier, I think," I commented to Maerunis. "Maybe we should go inside. We'll catch our deaths out here for sure." She nodded and we headed to her castle, which seemed a lot warmer nowadays than it did when I first met her. After a while, we were routine in each other's lives. Weeks passed into a month, and that month into two months, and that month into three. I fell sick with Kikoughela and was bedridden for a few days. In that time, Maerunis discovered that she was to have our son, Proctoru. We failed at parenting, to say the least. Being so young, neither of us knew how to care for a child. We had a hard time bringing Proctoru up, and as a result he was insecure and couldn't function in society. He was in and out of several mental hospitals, until eventually he left us and went off on his own. He eventually found his own family; one that replaced Maerunis and I. Maerunis was crushed when Proctoru had to leave, but we both knew it was the best thing for him. After that, we went our own separate ways for a while. Our paths cross often however, and even when we're not together I often find myself drifting into thoughts about the cybunny I met by chance in the park that dreary night. I still don't know what made me decide to go on a late stroll... but I'm sure my life would be much different had I not.
