I'm rewriting Hikany's story. So the o ld version has been taken down. I will slowly keep adding to her new one. Bare with me.
The Little Undertaker
Hikany! Hikany, wake up!" ordered a gruff yet kind voice.
My eyes fluttered open. Groggly, I looked up at my father who was bent over me, peering into his gentle brown eyes.
Hikany, it is 5:00 AM. Someone came in last night asking for a coffin for their late beloved. I need your help. Come as soon as you're ready."
I nodded and rose from "bed", which was really a small coffin me and my father had built many years ago. The room was very dark, but I ambled over to the wall and snatched my dress off a crude hook on the wall. The dress was a jet black, with lace around the edges. It was very big for me, my mother made it for me. "I'll make it with room to grow." she had said. I still hadn't really grown into it. The sleeves were very long, and I nearly stumbled on it when I ran. I carefully untied two ribbons on my arms and tied back my hair and the other ribbon was wrapped around my neck. Once I was done dressing, I followed my father out of the room.
In the other room, I saw father bent over reading a piece of paper by the dim candlelight.
What are the measurements?" I asked softly, walking up behind father, attempting to read the crumbled paper. But both father and I knew I didn't know how to read.
My father looked up at me. "Very small, it will be a child's coffin. You can make a small coffin, right Hikany?" I nodded.
With a little help..."
I'll help you if you need it. Here are the measurements, go find some wood and carve it." Even if I couldn't read words, numbers I did understand. I nodded and walked back into the room where I slept, we kept all our wood in there.
Unlike other undertakers, who just manage the arrangements for the burrial of a dead person, father and I were responsible for the arrangements and the making of the coffins. The town we lived in was very small and poor, and father and I did not have the money to order coffins from a factory, so we made them ourselves.
I carved for quite some time, and in about an hour I was done, but father was not back yet. I got up from the ground and admired the coffin I had just finished. It reminded me of the time when I first carved a little Cybunny figurine.
I looked about me, the moonlight still came down through the rafters and I liked the moonlight. I loved the moon. Its soft light made the darkness of night not so scary.
Father was still not back. I thought about going out to search for him, but I thought better of the idea. I paced back and forth, eventually I started carve again, this time I carved a little doll.
I heard a quiet creak and father came through the door carrying a paper bag. "Guess what I have Hika?"
I clapped my hands in excitement, but I had no idea what Father had brought home. "Is it food?"
He set the bag down on the table and reached in and drew out a large bat cookie, my favorite food. "I saw them in the market and thought you deserved a little treat for working so hard," he said as he handed me the leathery cookie.
While I ate the cookie I noticed that the bag was not empty, inside there was rustling.
What else is in there?" I asked curiously, afraid he had bought some writhing food.
Oh," said father, "I got another treat for you Hikany." He smiled and put both arms down into the bag and lifted up one of the ugliest things I had ever seen. It was purple, with big glowing red eyes and sharp teeth. It was drooling and snarling. Father set it down on the floor and it wandered about like a little rodent.
What is it?" I asked disgusted by the snorting it made.
He's a Drackonak, a little Petpet from Meridell. Someone was trying to get rid of him so I thought you might like a little friend," explained father.
Oh..." I didn't want to make father feel like the gift was wasted. "He's very feisty." I laughed. "What should we call him...?"
I dunno, sweetie...how about Dracky?"
That's kind of lame, father." I laughed. Father was bad at names. I'm glad my mother had named me. I thought a minute, then had a name. "What about Mortem? It means 'death'. It's fitting for a creature living in a house dealing with such things."
You may call him whatever you like, he's yours after all."
We both stood and watched Mortem run about for a few minutes. I hoped he wouldn't eat too much, we barely had enough money for food for ourselves.
Did you finish the coffin, Hikany?" asked father. I nodded and he hugged me. "I knew you could finish it without me," he laughed. "Good. I'll go get it. The service is in a few hours, so I better be going soon. Maybe you can teach Mortem a few tricks while I'm gone."
I sighed as father retrieved the coffin and left. Mortem was still bumping around the room. He eventually scurried into the wood room, I followed after him.
The moon no longer shown through the roof, and the orange sun was gently rising. I heard it was even brighter in other places, like Mystery Island. Here in the Haunted Woods, one could rarely tell the difference from the sun and moon. I liked the dark atmosphere. It seemed comforting.
I amused myself by keeping watch of Mortem all day. I made sure he didn't chew up our wood supply, and he bit me on occasion. Eventually, Mortem grew tired and slept. I just day dreamed of going outside. I rarely was allowed to leave the house, father didn't like me wandering off. There were so many things I wanted to do...I wanted to do errands for the Brain Tree, and visit the Haunted House, or go to the Haunted Fairground and ride the rides. Most of all, I wanted to go to the graveyard and see mother again, and give her lilies. Both mother and I loved lilies, I mused.
Soon I fell asleep, and I dreamt of the things I day dreamed about. It was so pleasant. I don't know how long I slept, but when I awoke, it was evening, and father was reading the newspaper as usual. Everything must've gone alright, so I lay back in my "bed" and fell back to sleep. But instead of dreaming of exploring, I dreamt of my mother in the form of nightmares. When I awoke the next morning, I was sweating.

Mortem

I have a Petpet, he's a Drackonak. Mortem is a villainous little thing that chews on everything I own. He really likes cheese too. He scares me.
