What they're for, what they say, and all that other icon goodness. About This Guide

This page is image intensive and will be very slow loading for dialup users. The sidebars are actual size so you can see just what you're getting into. If you are using IE, you'll be able to see the hover image as well. Hold the mouse over the link area on each sidebar. Once that image loads (and you won't be able to see it loading), the background image will pop up. :D Below are the standard sections included in each sidebar guide.

The Icons
These are the actual icons that come with the sidebar. Some images are broken or appear wrong. That's TNT's fault, not mine. :P You do actually get the broken image when the event appears.

Title
Except for the Birthday sidebar, and any unreleased sidebar, the titles are exactly as they appear in the drop down menu.

Release Dates
The date of release for each sidebar has been provided, along with the dates of custom icons if they were released seperately. For a long time, the only sidebar with custom icons was the Haunted Woods Sidebar. These days, all sidebars have unique icons. :)

How Do You Get It?
This is how you get it now, or how you could have gotten it then.

Characters
Alot of sidebars are themed after certain characters in Neopia. This section tells ya' who they are. ;)

Extras
If the sidebar comes with extra bottom images, this is where you'll find them.

User Lookup Code
Want this sidebar on your User Lookup? Copy the code provided and paste it into the 'About Me' section on your User Info Page. Watch out, though. To keep the code as clean and short as possible, I've utilized some of neo's css classes and ids. Other copy and paste codes you may find can clash with my codes and mess up your lookup. :)

Quick Load Links
Are you just here to see what one sidebar looks like and don't want to wait for the rest of the page to load? You can use the quick load links! Open each numbered link in a new window, copy the address of this page, and then close this window. After the images in the Quick Load Links finish loading, paste the address into the address bar and press go! You should be able to see the entire sidebar now while the other sidebars are still loading. :)

Activating An Unlocked Sidebar

Once you unlock a sidebar, you can activate it at the Site Preferences page. The last option will say:

Sidebar Theme
Choose the theme you wish to use when browsing Neopets.com.

Choose which theme you would like from the drop down menu. You should already have Neopets Yellow. Then click the Change Your Details button. You should see your new sidebar in use immediately.

Types of Sidebars

There are now 11 known sidebars.

Non Unlockable Sidebars
There are two sidebars that can not be unlocked. They are the Neopets Yellow sidebar that comes with your account and the Birthday sidebar that is used twice a year.

Seasonal Sidebars
Three sidebars are associated with yearly holidays or seasons and can be unlocked each year on their associated day. On February 14th, you can unlock the Happy Valentines Day! sidebar. On October 31st, you can unlock the Haunted Woods sidebar. On December 31st, you can unlock the Winter Holiday sidebar.

Plot Sidebars
Most sidebars are unlocked through plot participation, so it is always wise to participate in current plots if you hope to unlock a sidebar. If you fail to participate in the plot associated with a sidebar, you will never again gain the chance to unlock that sidebar. These sidebars include the Curse of Maraqua sidebar (CoM war), the Qasalan Sidebar (LDP puzzle), the Altdor Cup sidebar (ACup competition), the Altadorian Constellations sidebar (AC puzzle), and the Cydrake's Gaze.

Promotional Sidebars
There is only one sidebar in this category. The Space Faerie Premium sidebar was released as an incentive to get players to purchase premium and encourage others to do the same through the referral program.

Sidebars YOU Can Still Unlock

Enough about all these retired sidebars I'll never get! What CAN I get?

There are a few sidebars you can still unlock. Right now, you can work hard on the Altador Plot (the plot is open indefinately, so no need to rush... but then, don't wait forever or it may close on you) to unlock the Altadorian Constellations sidebar.

Some sidebars are released annually. In February, you can unlock the Happy Valentines Day! sidebar. In October, make sure you catch the Haunted Woods sidebar. December brings the mysterious Winter Holiday sidebar.

Finally, keep an eye on the plot board. If any plots are out, make sure you participate. Plots are the number one producer of new sidebars, and once an awesome sidebar has been released as a plot prize, you cannot turn back time to unlock it. :)

Sidebar Benifits

There is many a rumor about sidebars increasing random events. The Haunted Woods sidebar is rumored to increase Spooky Random Events. Some believe the Winter Holiday sidebar will increase Winter Random Events. Even the Maraquan sidebar has been suggested to increase events while touring Maraqua. Infact, every sidebar is rumored to help you out in some way, usually related to the world the sidebar is based, and if not based in a world, like the Happy Valentines Day! sidebar, it is believed to help you in certain types of random events.

My friends, these rumors are just wishful thinking. The only sidebar that increases random events is the Birthday sidebar, and it more likely than not has nothing to do with the sidebar itself... although the editorial has on a number of occasions (an example) stated that the sidebar DOES cause it, but I don't take that exactly literally. :). Neo's birthday and your own are special, and neo awards you accordingly.

Let me provide some evidence to this claim... Everyone notices the huge difference in random event occurances while wearing the Birthday sidebar than without. If played all day, a user can expect to receive ten to twenty random events. On any other day, a user can expect to find zero to three events. That's a very noticeable difference. Testing the occurances of the Haunted Woods sidebar in relation to random events, I have found that in a few hours time, zero to three spooky events will occur, with AND without the Haunted Woods sidebar. Refreshing at the advent counter leads many users to get Winter Random Events, about 2 to 5 per hour (due to the rapid refreshing rate instead of browsing). Users wearing the Winter Holiday sidebar noticed no difference in this statistic.

Further proof on this can be seen in another editorial. Issue 241 dispelled some rumors about things people can do to increase the chance of receiving random events. They again answered that the ONLY way to increase random events is through the Birthday sidebar.

I can not gaurantee that sidebars do not increase random events in their respective worlds and themes, but from all available evidence, there is no substance to these rumors.

Tale of Woe How Do You Get It? You had to have participated in the Tale of Woe plot and completed at least one plot step. You got the sidebar automatically by visiting Sophie's Shack where you collect your prizes. Neopets Yellow This is the default sidebar. How Do You Get It? It's default... you already have it. Characters The only character featured in this sidebar theme is Jhuidah the Island Faerie. She can be seen in the trading post icons. Haunted Woods This is the scary sidebar starring all of your favorite villians of the Haunted Woods. Released October 31, 2004. How Do You Get It? You wear this automatically on October 31st. To keep it permanently, load or refresh any page on the site at 11:59pmNST October31st. This is halloween night. You have to be on a page that is able to receive Random Events. This means that loading or refreshing petpages, the Neopets homepage, or the Neopian Times will not get you the sidebar. When the sidebar was released, it was randomly available for the last five minutes of October 31st. It was also given out to the winners of the very first Random Contest. In late 2004 and early 2005, it was available through rare Spooky Random Events. This may have been removed in favor of the current method. Characters The characters featured in the bottom images are, in order, the Brain Tree, the Werelupe King, the Malevolent Sentient Poogle Plushie (MSPP), Eliv Thade (also shown in the trade icons), Count von Roo, and Hubrid Nox. Birthday Happy Birthday! And look! No ads! You also have more chances to receive random events. Released November 15, 2004. How Do You Get It? This sidebar automatically shows up for your birthday (or whatever date you set as your birthday when you signed up) and for Neopets birthday. That's November 15th. Winter Holiday A festive sidebar for the holiday season. It MAY increase your chances of Winter Random Events. Released February 2, 2005. Custom Icons added February 1, 2006. How Do You Get It? You can receive this sidebar on the last day of the Advent Calendar, December 31, along with your prizes. According to the Neopian Times Editorial, there are certain requirements that need to be met when you go for your prizes. These requirements are still unknown, though from another Editorial, we know that the time of day definately does not matter. (Hopefully the second and minute doesn't matter either.) Through my research, I may have solved a piece of the puzzle. Collect your prizes every single day. There may or may not be more requirements to unlock this sidebar. See the research section below for more info. Throughout the day that the sidebar was released (Feb 2, 2005), it could be obtained through Winter Random Events. It is rumored that very rare Winter Random Events continued to release the sidebar until the end of March. Characters A blue Blumaroo and a Polarchuck (from the Polarchuck (TCG)) are featured in the bottom image, and Taelia, the Snow Faerie on Terror Mountain, is the trade icons. Unlocking Research UPDATE: There have been many forum posts, many neomails, and many more volunteers than the numbers stated below. I have stopped updating the numbers here, but am always updating my spreadsheet info offline. I have been accused of lying on a number of points, especially the point about collecting prizes every single day, so I'll reiterate now. Reliable people that I have talked to personally and at length (as in, not random people on the boards, not younger/immature people, not people claiming to know their friend's stats or people they've heard about, not people that have trouble remembering things that happened in December but absolutely swear to have gone to the calendar every single day and not gotten the sidebar, etc.) who did get the sidebar on December 31, 2005, all said that yes, they went every single day to the advent and many were able to prove so by listing all those items found in their SDBs. I'm not claiming here that this solution is absolute or the only requirement. These are my findings. It's the only portion of my findings that were the same for all of those volunteers. I'm just saying. And I don't claim, too, that I have even asked all the right questions. There could be a requirement that no one has even thought about yet. In short, I've done the work, I've displayed the results, and I would kindly appreciate no more accusations. :) (And sorry for making you all read that. Most of y'all are great. xD) Three reliable volunteers who unlocked the sidebar December 31, 2005 answered all of my questions. All three collected their prizes every single day in December. Two of them collected and received their sidebar within the first minute of the day. The third person said that they collected it in the afternoon. I have also had about five more or less than reliable volunteers that have answered all of my questions. All five collected their prizes every single day. Two out of ten volunteers who did not get the sidebar said that they visited the advent every single day. Those two were considered reliable, with excellant memories, but unable to prove that claim. (Proof is a person able to show that they have all of that season's items in either a gallery or SDB search, that the items to do not fluctuate in quantity, but have exactly 1 each, and substantiate that they have not searched for and purchased any advent item but got it from the advent calendar themselves.) Some disproven theories: Christmas themed item in inventory; Wearing the same christmas themed avatar when collected; Wearing the same sidebar; Some unproven theories: Playing with animation; Wearing any Christmas themed avatar. If you have a very good memory, have unlocked this sidebar, and would like to answer a few questions... or if you have more theories you'd like me to ask my volunteers, please neomail me. Note: It's been a long time and while interest has risen, memories have declined. I'll accept more theories, but I will be doing no more research until December 31st. If you want to help, be sure to PAY ATTENTION to all aspects of your account as you visit the advent on the 31st this year. Happy Valentines Day! The girly pink sidebar of loooooove. Released February 14, 2005. Custom icons added February 13, 2006. How Do You Get It? You get to wear this automatically on February 14th, Valentines Day. You unlock this sidebar for permanent use by sending or receiving A Mysterious Valentines Card on February 14th. The sender receives the SHH event on the results page of the item pop up window after sending the card. The recipient gets a neomail from TNT stating that they had received A Mysterious Valentines Card and have unlocked the sidebar. The recipient is not told who sent the card, hence the mystery. After use, the card dissappears and cannot be resold. However, you can safely transfer the card by gifting, without fear, on any other day besides the 14th. Characters The sidebar features a yellow Bruce, blue Wocky, and red Usul. The neomessage icon comes from A Mysterious Valentines Card, the gift icon comes from Heart Shaped Chocolates, and the trade icons comes from the Feepit Heart Ornament. How do you get the card? You can restock the card at the Igloo for 53nps year round in batches of a dozen. You can restock the card at the Gift Shop for 250nps for the entire week preceding Valentines Day. They will stock there in batches of 200. Both of these methods are extremely competitive and only recommended for experienced restockers. You can also find the card through random events. However, the more popular way to aquire A Mysterious Valentines Card is to buy it off the Trading Post, Auction Block, or Shop Wizard. Prices fluctuate greatly throughout the year and are dependant on the supply, demand, and nearness to February 14th. It can be as much as 500k when the hype of Valentines Day nears but the supply is low, to 100k when the demand is high as well as the supply, to the low 50k range a few months after Valentines Day when investers and hopefuls are no longer interested. Curse of Maraqua It's very swimming. Released June 11, 2005. Custom Icons added February 1, 2006. How Do You Get It? You had to have earned at least one war point in the Curse of Maraqua Plot. This sidebar costs exactly one Maraquan War point which can be redeemed at the Curse of Maraqua War Prize Shop. Characters The characters featured in the bottom images are, in order, Isca, Goregas, King Kelpbeard (also shown in the trade icons), Swordmaster Talek, a Maraquan Chomby, and the Chasm Beast. The friends icons are referring to Garin's ship. They are Black Pawkeet skulls. It is given to you for free after completing the Altador Plot and visiting the Council Chamber to receive your prizes.
