Welcome be ye to me hornswaggled Petpet Page. I be Matey Tumbles the Pirate Slorg Kadoatie. I mean to be tellin' ye all about today's big event, "International Talk Like a Pirate Day". But, 'cause I know most of ye be landlubbers, I'll be tryin' to talk more in yer manner.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day" (ITLAPD) be is a non-Neopets event that is celebrated on Neopets because TNT (The Neopets Team) thinks it's awesome and they rule the site.

From Wikipedia:

International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 by John Baur ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), of the United States, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. For example, an observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello", but with "Ahoy, me hearty!" The date was selected because it was the birthday of Summers's ex-wife and consequently would be easy for him to remember.

So, on this petpage, I'll be giving you all the info you need to know about going along with today's festivities including why everyone's posts are in pirate speech, teach you how to talk like a pirate, as well as where to go, what to eat, and, if you really want to go all-out, what to wear. So, welcome to ITLAPD and, remember, have fun!

You might be thinking, "So, why is everyone going to the trouble to talk like a Pirate today?". Other than the obvious facts that talking like a Pirate is extremely cool and a lot of fun, honestly, they don't have a choice... and, sorry to break it to you, but you're talking like a Pirate, too.

At this point you'll protest, "I'm not talking like a Pirate! All my posts are perfectly normal!". To which I reply... "No, actually, they aren't." Here's why:

TNT applies a filter to the Neoboards that translates certain words into Pirate speech. You can see everyone else's Pirate talk but the filters, for some reason, are not applied to your own posts as you see them. If you sign into a side account you can see that your posts are indeed being Pirate-ified. Here's an example:

Not everything you type will be translated into Pirate Speak. Only certain words (or parts of words) the filter recognizes get altered. Sometimes the results can be quite comic. My Ownerowner's Neoboard Signature on last year's ITLAPD had the word "Snot" in it, which appeared as "Snay" because one of the words the filter recognizes is "not". Below is the list that she and some other great people (listed in the credits) found. There could be more! Feel free to Neomail her if you find any new words and she'll get the message to me so I can add them to my list. Remember, though, if I tried to list all the words that contain filtered words, that would be a lot to list, so I've only listed the base word that gets altered.

Any of these words either whole or as part of another word will get the result.
For example, not = nay so nothing = naything.

Where to go is simple, head over to Krawk Island:

While there you can search for Buried Treasure, play one of KI's four games (Armada, Deckball, Deck Swabber, and Dubloon Disaster), or gamble your NP away at one of KI's three gambling arenas (Bilge Dice, Food Club, or Krawps). If you have Dubloons to spend, you can buy a petpet at Little Nippers, grab a meal at the Golden Dubloon, or, if the tide is right, buy rare items from the Smuggler's Cove. Additionally, the Krawk Island Academy is a great place to train your lower-leveled pets (you get free training here on your pets' day but pay in dubloons the rest of the year).

Finding pirate food is no challenge if you're visiting Krawk Island. With dubloons in hand, head to The Golden Dubloon, Krawk Islands finest (and only) dining establishment. The servers there, Fontaine Sisters Loretta and Rosetta, keep busy with all of their customers but they know what they're doing. Most of the food is delicious but there are a few dishes that are a bit less savory than the others. Here's a brief guide of what to try and what to avoid:

Dish: Try: Why: Avoid: Why:
Starter: Shiver Me Shrimp Nothing better than a good shrimp cocktail! Refreshing and delicious. Crusty Clam Surprise Crusty: good on bread, bad on clams.
Main: Cap'n Threelegs Cutlass Crusade A dish fit for the captain it's named after. Free sword included. Bilge Rat Madeira No good wine should be treated so poorly.
Dessert: Kraku Berry Cove Tart berries, sweet cake, and a hint of minty freshness. Blueberry and Oyster Ice Cream You'll scream for this ice cream... but not in a good way.
Cocktail: Keel Haul Keep Scurvy at bay. Served in decorative skull glass you can keep for a souvenir. Land Lubber Being a land lubber on Krawk Island is bad... drinking one is worse.

If you don't feel like eating at the Golden Dubloon or can't get to Krawk Island but want to try the food, search the trading post for the leftovers some diners take home when they overestimate how much they can eat.

It's easy to dress like a pirate if you're one of the 52 lucky Neopet species that can be painted the Pirate color. Fork over the millions of NP you've been hoarding away or use up that Fountain Faerie Quest reward you've been saving for that perfect paint job and have fun! However, if you're a Buzz or Usul (or Human), or if you don't have the NP or FFQ saved up it's going to take a bit more work.

First, categorize yourself as either Neopet or Human... there's a difference.
Tops: Stereotypical pirates must have a red and white striped shirt... it's required. The stripes should be horizontal or they'll make you look pudgy. Horizontal stripes are very slimming. Alternately, for the higher-ranking pirate, you might want to consider the poet-style shirt.
Pants: This is where whether you're human or Neopet matters...

Neopets: Don't bother... most of your "official" pirate-y pals don't, why should you? Save your NP.
Humans: You must wear pants. Go for very tattered shorts that stop just below the knee. Patches are an alternate to tatters. Remember, dark colors hide stains and pirates don't wash up much.

Shoes: To shoe or not to shoe... with pirates, that is a good question. If you're not worried about your feet, don't bother and you'll fit in just fine. If you opt for boots, look for ones with a buckle and cuffed top. Remember, depending on your accessories, you may only need one shoe.
Head-coverings: Two big options here. Hats are generally reserved for the captain, though.
Hats: Be the big man on ship and wear the traditional tri-cornered hat. Generally seen in red, black, or brown both with and without plumage.
Scarf/Bandanas: Favorite with the scalawags, grab one in red, black or navy with some sort of pattern, either stripes, spots, or the traditional skull and crossbones.
Accessories: How long you've been a pirate is implied by what body parts you're missing. If you're not missing anything, you might as well have "landlubber" stamped on your forehead. Three main options are available to you, would you like to lose a hand, a leg, or an eye? Perhaps all three? Avoid losing both eyes... it makes piracy a bit difficult if you can't see.
Jewelry: Pirate clothing isn't much for pockets, and paper money gets destroyed in salt water. Your best bet is to do as the pirates and wear your wealth, on your ears and around your neck. Deck yourself out with gold earrings and necklaces, just don't lose them... that's all you've got.
Body Art: With missing limbs, tattoos show your experience and dedication to the pirating trade. Try one on for size... go for an anchor, skull and crossbones, or, remember your mother with the always sentimental "MOM"... Just be sure you spell it right.

Now that you know what to get, have fun finding your outfit! Once you're dressed properly, no one will be able to tell you from the real thing! Don't forget, you can dress up your petpets, too.

I really hope you liked my guide and I wish you the best on ITLAPD. Now that you know what to do, you shouldn't have any trouble. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks to dablumeanie and treenifer for helping to get this list together, and nezera23, sammi_side, meltalviel, and biggobrainygirl for catching ones we missed!
This was a big group effort and the list wouldn't be as complete as it is without their help.

Thanks also to theicyworm for letting me use her pixels. Her Slorg Adoptables are adorable and everyone should have at least one. If you want one, just click on one of the slorgs at the top of the page!
