The Princess

She who is cursed

What could be worse than death, they say? Pah. They are ignorant. They know nothing. Only a fool would want to live forever - not in this life, anyway.

How dare they call me lucky! How dare they praise the worst part of me! Immortal, they call me, as if I am sort sort of goddess. No! They do not understand! They can never understand!

I never wanted this. Sometimes I wish my parents had let me die like so many of my subjects affected by the plague. But no, they sought the help of that sorcerer who made me like this, a never-aging, ceaseless existence. What folly this is, that the only ones who wish for death are those who cannot have it!

But no. I cannot criticize my parents. How could they have known the sorcerer's plot? They did this out of love for me. They wanted to see their beloved daughter grow up and inherit a kingdom. Ha. I never grew up, did I? Now they are gone and my kingdom has crumbled to dust, swallowed up by time, never again to resurface. Why, then, am I still here? Why must I continue to live on? All I want is a mortal life. Is that so much to ask?

I cannot continue this for much longer. Already, I feel myself growing weaker inside. I have seen too many years. A era of hardships lies behind these youthful eyes. I am slowly wasting away like a dying fire. My bright yellow coat has dulled, and I sometimes catch myself flickering in and out of existence. One of these days, I fear I will disappear altogether and simply cease to be.

And yet, the questions remain. Where is that sorcerer who made me this way? How did he do it? Can it be reversed? These same thoughts have entered my mind a million times, but I am still no closer to finding an answer.

Vitanor promised he'd find a cure. How badly I want to trust him! I want to believe that somehow there's a way to restore my former mortality. But I cannot allow hope to take hold, for once it does, it will be like an unstoppable wildfire, consuming every part of me until nothing remains.

What could be worse than death? A life cursed by immortality.

Mark of the Cursed

Perhaps Flu's most striking feature is the marking on her left cheek. The coloring is such that it is often mistaken for a third eye when viewed from a distance. It isn't, of course - but it is also much more than a mere patch of fur.

The mark wasn't present from birth. It first appeared at the moment Flu drank the sorcerer's tonic her parents had brought to cure her illness. Those closest to her, while mystified by it, assumed it was little more than a minor side effect of a life-saving cure. A small price to pay.

But as the full consequences of the sorcerer's tonic began to bestow themselves, Flu at last realized what it really meant. The mark is, in fact, a symbol: an infinity sign turned on its side, looping around her right eye and down onto her cheek. It is an outward sign of the immortality she was given. A reminder that she would never again age, trapped in the body of an adolescent, doomed to walk the earth for eternity.

The mark of the cursed.

Characters

Those Flu has encountered

I've been lucky enough to meet several wonderful people who've have helped me through the years. They've made my existence a little less lonely - and I don't know what I'd do without them.

Vitanor

My friendship with Vitanor is the most unlikely friendship in the history of Neopia. I'm not kidding. For one, our kingdoms were enemies for centuries. For another, he's dead.

When he was alive, Vitanor was king of the Erathan Empire. He had a nasty habit of caring only about himself and his quest for power. He conquered many other kingdoms in his time - including my own dear Rote. As you might expect, he made a lot of enemies. The people hated him. And let's face it - he deserved it. He was a pretty big jerk.

So eventually, his people couldn't stand for it any longer. There was a revolution, and his own guards turned against him, and...

I was already on my own when I heard about Vitanor's death. Good riddance, I remember thinking. Nobody will miss that tyrant. I hoped to never hear his name again - and didn't expect to.

So you can't imagine my surprise when, several hundred years later, I stumbled across him, sitting amidst the crumbling ruins of a watchtower, looking like a lost puppy.

As I understand it, Vitanor hadn't fulfilled his destiny during his lifetime. I don't really know what that destiny is, or why he was sent back as a spirit. I only know that I'm supposed to help him. I'm really the only one who can. Because of my curse, I'm able to see past the mortal realm into different levels of existence, including the spirit realm. Vitanor is invisible to mortals, so when I found him, he was unbelievably lonely, angry, and had given up hope of ever finding peace.

When he learned who I was - Princess Flunestra of the Kingdom Rote - he reacted coldly, wanted me to leave him alone. But I persisted. After so many years on my own, I understood how he must be feeling, watching everything he's known crumble away and fade into the past. I didn't want him to bear that alone. Eventually, he seemed to warm up to me, and his stone heart began to melt. Now, believe it or not, he's my truest, most faithful friend.

Ever since that day, we've traveled together. He's grown extremely protective of me, and if I'm in danger, he's able to intervene in small ways - such as dousing my attacker with icy coldness, levitating small objects, or even manipulating electrical currents. We've made a pact to help each other. Vitanor is going to help me discover a way to become mortal again - and in turn, I'll help him recompense for his past deeds and finally find peace.

Cinder

Hmm, how to explain Cinder?

First thing to know: she does really cool things with fire. She found this magic crystal in a cave somewhere - talk about the ultimate treasure trove - and it transformed her into a powerful sorceress who can fly, teleport, and shoot fire out of her hands. She's a lot of fun to bring to bonfires: the ultimate smore-maker. She's also slightly telepathic. She can speak directly into your minds - which was SUPER SCARY the first time she did it to me. She's pretty good at reading minds too, or at least she's smart enough to guess what you're thinking. Did I mention she's great at bonfires?

All jokes aside, Cinder is a great friend. She's semi-immortal and can see Vitanor, which makes our conversations run a lot smoother. The first time I met her, she saved me from a monster just outside Meridell. We don't always travel together, but she gave me a shard of her crystal, which allows me to summon her if I'm ever in trouble and need her help.

Cinder can be terrifying in battle. Her eyes glow blue, and she summons massive swirling firestorms. I'm so glad she's on my side - I wouldn't want to find myself at the wrong end of her spells.

But outside battle, she's super nice. She loves traveling and exploring the world. She'll sometimes disguise herself as a lowly vagabond in order to roam cities freely without drawing attention. Amidst her travels, she's working on finding the locations of the remaining five crystals to protect them and keep them from falling into the wrong hands.

Story

The tale of Princess Flu

Chapter 1

I can't remember much about the sickness that struck our kingdom that year. It's been so long ago that my memories are tattered like an old flag that'd been flying too long. But I do know the pain was like nothing I'd ever felt. Unbearable, stabbing agony made it impossible to move - it was as if my very insides were burning up. The sickness took claimed the lives of many of my subjects, and it would have taken mine had my parents not sought out Scorpius.

But I'm getting ahead of myself, aren't I?

My full name is Princess Flunestra, but most of the time, I go by just Flu. My parents, King Fasoon and Queen Sansori, were rulers of the kingdom of Rote. Today, Rote's existence has been virtually wiped clean from all but Neopia's most ancient history books. The land we once occupied is now known as Altador.

Ours was a peaceful land. Though relatively small, we enjoyed many of the comforts of larger nations. Our port cities were bustling centers of trade and commerce. Our soil was rich for farming, and our mines harbored bountiful natural resources. And I, Flunestra, would one day be Queen, ruler over all.

My parents did the best they could to prepare me. I studied under the finest tutors in the land, learning geography, and philosophy, science, and art. Of course, I had plenty of time for play, too. There were feasts, performances, outings - and balls, the most beautiful dances my father put on. What wonderful times I had.

But just as the seasons change, all good thugs must come to an end.

By the time the first rumors of sickness reached us, borne by rats carried into the harbor from a asadistant country, it was too late. The sickness spread like wildfire, affecting everyone it could, regardless of class. One moment, one of our castle chefs fell ill. The next...I was struck down too. I was twelve.

I honestly can't remember much about being ill. The memories are hazy, blurred by time. Perhaps it is because I don't want to remember. The pain I endured was so terrible.

There was no cure for the sickness. Even our most skilled castle physicians could find nothing. All they could do was attempt to ease my pain, provide me some comfort before my unpreventable death.

They say a parent's love for their child is one of the strongest forces in the world. My parents in particular, being the king and queen, proved this doubly true. They were, by no means, willing to sit and watch their child and only heir die in front of them. They took it upon themselves to find a cure - and were willing to go to extremes to do so.

There was only one cure left for me: black magic. Heavily discouraged in our kingdom. My father and mother had imprisoned all sorcerers they could find, and thus had a generous supply at their disposal. None of these, however, proved capable of curing me. My parents' hopes dwindled.

Still, the imprisoned sorcerers spoke of another, the leader of their order who had evaded my parents' capture for years. His name was Scorpius. They claimed he would be able to cure me.

Little did we know, his cure would change me forever.

Chapter 2

Scorpius gives the "cure" to Flu's parents. They take the cure back to her. She is "cured" but from that moment forward ceases to age completely. The cure in fact has made her immortal. Many many years later, Flu's kingdom is conquered and falls to ruin, and she leaves in search of Scorpius to seek an end for her curse.

Chapter 3

Years and years of wandering. Flu realizes she can see ghosts as a result of her curse when she meets Vitanor, the spirit of the ruthless king who conquered her kingdom. He is bitter and angry, but overwhelmingly lonely, and Flu is the first person he was able to talk to in a long time. She manages to soften his stone heart. He promises to help her first the cure for her curse. As time goes on, however, she begins to wonder whether the cure she seeks will render Vitanor invisible again, therefor losing the only friend both of them have.
