Name: Tainea
Age: 20
Birthday: Month of Swimming, 30th
Birthplace: Neovia
Occupation before Covert: Carpentry for local business in Neovia
Address before Covert: Neovia
Educational History: No formal education. Was taught the basics at home
by my Mother, learned woodwork from Father
Current Job: Head of the Mechanic Branch
Bio: I am the oldest of 4 girls. My parents passed away at a young age
and I have been supporting my family ever since.

FILE #1: Note to sisters

Dear Sisters,

I have been offered a job! Doing odd jobs around Neovia has given us sporadic income, at best. So I thought it would be best if I took this job. Every month I plan to make deposits into our bank account. I will only make these deposits once a month so please spend the money on necessities and not luxuries. I mean, it's better to be able to eat than to paint your claws, Coral.

Coral - I promise that when I get home I will look again at the pink dresser you designed. You are now the oldest in the house, so please take good care of Lavender and Tawny. If you could try to find a part-time job, that would certainly help. I know that you are not used to working, but think about the extra things you could buy with the extra neopints coming in.

Lavender - Please be a dear and help Coral out with the house responsibilities. Perhaps you could take over the cooking and cleaning while I am gone? I know that it is your turn to have a gift made, so do be thinking about what you want me to add to your room. And while I am gone, I will be on the lookout for anything purple enough to add to your collection.

Tawny - Be good and listen to your older sisters. You must study hard at school and come straight home after to do your homework. Try not to stamp and scream - your sisters are going to be busy taking care of the house. I will be home soon to hear your stories and braid your pigtails.

Good luck, sisters. I know this is our first time apart since Mother and Father went, but it has been 10 years now and I am sure you will be fine without me. Take care of each other.

Much love,
Tainea

Name: Steyr
Age: 24
Birthday: Month of Sleeping, 17th
Birthplace: Brightvale
Occupation before Covert: Adding to my personal collection of books and knowledge
Address before Covert: Neovia
Educational History: Studied under every master in every Neopian land.
Particularly spent time studying in Shenkuu.
Current Job Title: Head Genius and Leader of the Mastermind Branch
Bio: My Father works as an advisor for King Hagan and my mother works in
King Hagan's court as the most highly sought after potions brewer. My parents
have given me every bit of education that can be afforded to gain. After
completing all forms of formal education, I went out to seek informal education
and my own fortune.

FILE #1: Letter to Parents

My dearest Mother and Father,
I trust this letter finds you well in body, soul, and - most importantly - mind.

Father, how is your work with King Hagan? Does he still prefer your advice to the other brainless Skeiths' in Brightvale? HA! As if he could use any others' advice. What about you, Mother? I'm sure your potions are still the most highly sought after - as they well ought to be.

You will find, by the time this correspondence has finally managed to reach you, that I have left Neovia for the time. Yes, I know that when you sent me here, Father, that my job was to unearth any knowledge worth having from Neovia's infinitesimal collection of books, if you will allow them to be such, and then I was to continue on my journey to seek all the books in all of Neopia.

But I have recently received a proposition that will further enable my studies. I have been offered a position on a team that will shortly be leaving to uncover what most would consider to be a legend, but I believe will come to reveal a history in Neopia never before fully discovered. Not only will I discover an ancient past, I will receive a significant financial reward and gather information on what could be a promising future for the elite of Neopia. I could hardly pass up such an opportunity to advance my career, now, could I?

No, I believe this will serve a purpose in our plan. Another significant step in my lifelong journey. I doubt that even my elder brother could have gained such a significant step towards a brighter future Neopia in which the lives of the Common are guarded safely by those of us who are among the Elite. I have found a power source that could help us reach our goals - and possibly even a few Neopians who may turn out to be bright enough to join us.

But enough about me for now. What has my big brother been up to? Spare no details - I want the full scoop.
Your Devoted Genius,
Steyr

Name: Vorack
Age: 27
Birthday: The Month of Hunting, 23rd
Birthplace: Neopia Central
Occupation before Covert: Neovian Archivist
Address before Covert: Neovia
Educational History: Studied at the local schools in Neopia Central
Current Job: Leader of Covert
Bio: My Mother worked at the Chocolate Factory for many years when I was young. She now stays at home with my younger Sister. I had been working as an archivist and funding medical research for 2 years before I was recruited to work in Covert.

FILE #1: Journal Entry

Today I happened upon an interesting prospect - a chance to travel the Neopian World and earn a fair penny at the same time. It appears that my humble work as archivist has caught the attention of someone well off. Who would have thought that I possessed skills to be desired - and those skills desired to be the leader of the bunch!

I am to have 3 companions on these journeys - a militant Kau named Revak, an intelligent Cybunny named Steyr, and a mechanical Krawk named Tainea. Each of us will play a role in the excavation of mythical item I assumed was only legend. We had our first meeting at the home of our Patron and discussed the details of our journey. Then we were all sent home to prepare ourselves.

But enough of this tonight. I have another meeting with our Patron, whom I have not yet met in person. I am hopeful that our meeting tonight will bring more clarity on our Patron and the journey ahead.

FILE #2: Camera on overalls

Tainea meandered through seemingly all of Neovia, careless as to where she walked - all the time muttering to herself.

."Don't worry about me... You 3 have each other... You don't need me... Don't be scared... You can get a job." She snorted. "Yea, they'll like that... Sure, I'll be back someday... Find someone else to take care of you... Work for yourself... make Mom and Dad proud... " On and on she went, trying to convince herself of the most efficient course of action.

She finally came to a stop in front of a very odd looking house. The house was two stories high and about as wide, and looked as if four different houses has been crafted together into one. The bottom right section was pale pink, the one above it was a deep purple, the one beside this was canary yellow, and the bottom left corner was colorless wood. While the three colorful sections looked fairly normal (having only windows and flowers and the like), the fourth section had odd shaped windows, extra chimneys, pipes, lamps, intricate lattice workings, and many other extremities which I can only guess as to their purpose.

Tainea entered the house through a door between the two bottom sections. The inside was dark and silent, until Tainea bellowed, "I'm HOME!" Lights instantaneously illuminated a long, plain hallway which ended in a split staircase - one side leading right, into deep purple, while the other side led left into canary yellow. Squeals of "Tainea!" erupted from all sides, then came the patter of feet which brought three young Krawk girls stood before Tainea.

."Oh, Tainea, you're finally home," breathed the Krawk wearing a frilly pale pink dress. "I thought I might need to... build... my own dresser, you were gone so long. Here, I drew up a design for you." She held up a picture between her perfectly manicured nails.

The Krawk in the deep purple robe grabbed Tainea's hand. "Tainea. You said tonight would be my turn for a gift." Her voice was heavy and thick, like Scamander Syrup.

The smallest krawk, in a canary yellow jumpsuit with matching ribbons STAMPed her foot on the ground, burst into tears and screamed, "MY TURN!"

All three girls turned on each other, ignoring Tainea to fight amongst themselves. It was worse than Revak's snoring.

."I'm going away for a while." Tainea said quietly. The girls didn't hear her over themselves. She waited for a response, but when none came, she sighed, walked through the plain wooden door on her left and closed the door behind her with a firm CLICK. She mumbled, "Get a job."

The girls knocked on her door incessantly as she packed, but Tainea didn't answer. She silently gathered some sturdy work clothes, heavy boots, and more tools than I could count into a plain, sturdy blue suitcase. Before falling asleep, she sat down and wrote a note to her sisters.

FILE #2: Video on Revak's shirt

Revak walked farther outside of Neovia than either of the others. His home was a place so far outside that I had never heard of it. Perhaps it isn't part of Neovia at all. It was a squat, square fort with a large fence around the outside. I'm not sure how large the property was, but it was filled with army training equipment. The large banner splayed "The PHARM." As Revak approached I could see that the sign read "The Paciferous Hegemony of Army Recruited Militants - Bringing Peace to your People." Revak saluted the two door guards as he walked inside, clicking his heels together with each salute. He strode inside as though on a mission. So he was.

A Moehog with small eyes started walking with Revak. "General Revak, sir, the latest recruits have arrived and are awaiting your instructions." Revak said nothing. "Sir, Commanding Officer Seider is also awaiting your arrival in his office and...

Revak cut the Moehog off with a firm, "Silence." The Moehog went very stiff, but continued walking. Revak continued. "Tell Commanding Officer Seider that I am taking a leave of absence from my position here." The Moehog shook a little as he said, "But, sir...

."Silence." Revak said again, this time with a little more punch to his word. They had now entered Revak's office and he walked around a plain wooden desk and seated himself. The shorter man stood trembling in front of him. Revak continued brusquely. "I am taking a leave of absence, beginning tomorrow at 00:00 hours. I do not know when I shall return, if ever.

There was silence in the room. The Moehog seemed to be plucking up courage, for he finally said quietly, "Sir, might you not want to tell your older brother this news yourself?

Revak stood up. The Moehog backed up. "No" was all Revak said. The man left the room, trembling. After he was alone, Revak signed some "Leave of Absence" papers then went into his bunk. He had his own room, which was small, very square, and very tidy. He packed a few belongings into a duffle bag, climbed onto his cot, and began snoring immediately.

FILE #2: Video on Steyr's jacket

Steyr walked with distinct purpose towards the center of Neovia and into the largest home in the Neovian city limits. He walked through the iron-wrought gate and up the stone laid pathway where the front door opened before him. An Aisha made held the door open and dipped into a shallow curtsy as he walked in, saying breathlessly "Ser Steyr."

."Pack some things for me. I'm leaving tomorrow and don't know when I'll be back." Steyr barked as he walked past the Aisha.

The front hall contained a rich, hunter green carpet and plush chairs. Steyr walked through the corridor into a large library. I must admit, I felt a little green myself when I saw the vastness of the books in that room. No paintings graced the walls for the walls were completely lined with shelves. In the middle of the room was a large desk, with several stacks of books lining the edges - though as Steyr seated himself at the desk I could see there was space left for him to do some research. There, Steyr pulled forward a stack of parchment, a long feathered quill, and a bottle of Emerald Ink. He quickly scratched out the following letter:

I could hardly pass up such an opportunity to advance my career, now, could I?

No, I believe this will serve a purpose in our plan. Another significant step in my lifelong journey. You both well know the plan and soon you will see how this is another inimitable step to carefully trod.

Your Devoted Genius,
Steyr

After addressing and sealing his letter, Steyr walked back into the foyer to where an Usul maid was dusting the staircase railing. The deep mahogany wood glowed even in the dimly light room.

."Have this Neomail posted immediately." Steyr commanded.

The Usul curtseyed. "Yes, Ser Steyr." She took the letter and put it into her apron pocket as Steyr took off his overcoat.

."And hang this up by the front door." Steyr threw the coat into her arms. At this point the video went black, because the implanted camera was masked somewhere upon the coat and the coat was now folded in the maids arms.

I heard the maid, again, say "Yes, Ser Steyr." The only sound that followed was Steyr's footsteps up the staircase. After a few moments I heard the maid say sarcastically, "Anything you say, Ser Steyr, Ser." The next moment the camera came on clear again. The maid had hung the coat up by the front door and the rest of the night only Steyr's wall could be seen.

FILE #2: Vorack's conversation with Vorack

The Speakerbox chuckled. "Evan, please bring Vorack a large cup of hot Spiced Pumpkin Coffee? We have a long night ahead and I want our guest to remain...agreeable.

When Evan had entered the room, I confess, I had not noticed. At his masters command he shuffled out of the room, quickly returning with a steaming mug of Spiced Pumpkin Coffee.

."How..." I faltered, not sure if I wanted to poise the question, "how did you know I always drink Spiced Pumpkin Coffee? Always Spiced Pumpkin Coffee and never anything else?"

The Speakerbox clicked his tongue. "Tut, tut. Not a very thought out question. I expected better from you, Vorack. As leader, you need to be able to put the puzzle together better than that. Do you not think that I have carefully and meticulously chosen each member of such an important venture? Have you not already seen what measures I am willing to take in order to insure this venture's success? Why should I do any less for the one I have chosen to lead?

."You have been watching me as well." It was a statement, not a question. "How long have you been doing so?"

At this the Speakerbox laughed outright. "Vorack, I have seen you enough to know what foods you eat and drink, when you sleep, how you think...I could tell you all about your fear of Spyders. I know that you wear your socks for 3 days before washing them. I know that you are allergic to Meowclopses. I know that you never eat fish if you can help it, but will do so to be polite. And if I recall correctly you are also organized, efficient, like-able, and quite capable of computing massive amounts of information in a way that even Steyr would be jealous of. You are a highly skilled Archivist - the best in the field. So, drink, Vorack. We have more important things to discuss than this."

."Your sister, Vorack. Remind me. How old will she be this year?" The Speakerbox softly interrupted.

I nearly spilled my coffee. "How...how did...you?" I sputtered. I was completely unnerved. How could he possibly know about Aubretia? I had not been to Neopia Central to visit her in well over a year, not since Mother had quit working at the Chocolate Factory so that she could stay at home with Aub. I had left to find work to pay for the personal 24-hour nursing care Aub required. My position as an Archivist allowed me to do this and have additional money to support several small medical research teams.

."She'll be twelve this year," The Speakerbox continued, quieting his voice till it was barely above a whisper, "If she makes it that long."

I stood up, fuming. "How. dare. you." I hissed, the words burning my throat as I spoke them again. "How. dare. you."

The room stood still, silent but for my angry, hot breathing. It took every ounce of self control I had not to start chucking items around the room. After a few moments I composed myself, to some degree, and hastily strode towards the door. Things had gone far enough...

."I know what can cure her, Vorack." The Speakerbox sounded...hopeful? Sympathetic? I couldn't be sure, but his words made me stop, hand poised on the doorknob.

."You're lying." I seethed, not moving an inch.

."Are you really willing to take that chance? On your sisters life? You've sworn to yourself, to your mother, and to Aub that you will do anything to find a cure. Is that not so?"

I hesitated. Yes, I was willing to spend a small fortune on private nurse care and medical research, but was I willing to give up those financial responsibilities to chase a myth that sounded too good to be true, too impossible to even dream about?

."If you know about my sister, then you must know that I alone am financially responsible for her care. I cannot possibly afford to join you." I forced myself to speak more calmly than I felt.

."Taken care of." The Speakerbox dismissed the concern as if it were not one. "Your 2 million Neopoint reward will be doled out in monthly increments equal to what you currently pay."

I did the calculations in my head. That gave me at least 5 years. "And if my sister does not survive that long? You are asking me to travel half way around Neopia. What if I am unable to return...in time?" I choked and couldn't continue. I shook my head and turned the doorknob.

."Vorack."

I flung the door open.

.We will not fail, Vorack. You want the truth? I chose you because we - together - can save your sister. I know you will stop at nothing, that you will risk everything for her. If you help me find it you can finally fulfill your promise. Or you can choose to go back to work and leave her fate in the hands of research." The Speakerbox spat out the last word as if it might bite him.

My mind was reeling, searching for the right answer - the answer for Aub.

I sighed and turned back into the room. "I'm in.
