i held you close, too close, too tight,
but you felt so far away.

now i'm alone at night, holding this pain inside,
since memories cease to fade.

Chapter I.
There was a time when she thought she wouldn't be alone, but those were much older days... All that's left of that now is a portion of her mind she worked so hard to keep locked up, even from herself. Why? Pain. She, Faihra, was young and light-hearted like many. She was a fool, and that got the best of her. This is that story; the locked portion of her memory.

Stop it! Stop it, I say!" She screamed as she ran in circles escaping her brother, Ryan, and their mutual friend, Aurenyr. Auren was about Ryan's age, slightly bigger in muscles and height, but had a much more admirable glow to him. The two chased Faihra in the forest, attempting to nip at her tail. Both were faster and stronger... she stood no chance in their game.

Eventually Ryan caught scent of another female near by, making him lose interest in chasing his little sister. "Auren, finish the job!" He called out, running off with a devious smile. Auren stealthily slipped through the forest ahead of his target, hiding behind a large tree as he awaited her approach.

Running as fast as she could push herself, suddenly she a felt gigantic pressure collapse into her side, forcing her to tumble downwards, her body hitting the natural mulch, landing on her back. On top of her, perpendicular, was Auren, laughing away. "WHAT the-"

Relaxxx." Auren cut her off, controlling his laughter. "Besides, I had to. I just... had to." He smiled down at her, slowly getting off. She pushed him further to speed up the process, not to happy with him when standing up again, shaking the dirt from her fur. "That's completely and utterly immature!"

He shook his head as he walked around her, stopping till he was a few inches in front from her side. "I'm friends with your brother, and you question my immaturity?" She laughed, knowing how he turned the tables just right.

Everything spurred from there. Ryan became more distracted with females the older he was, leaving Auren and Faihra more alone time than expected. Slowly, they learned about eachother. Histories, ideals, opinions... For once, they appearred similar in eachother's eyes.

Chapter II.
Nearby villas were celebrating Meridell, another year gone by since it's discovery. Fireworks were on the schedule for later in the evening, meanwhile festivities crowded the streets.

Faihra and Auren walked side by side; there was something different about them lately, they developed a new tie between them. There was more than just friendship in both hearts, but it stayed hidden from both minds.

Her amber eyes were darting to every booth, observing what games were being played and what trinkets were being sold. "Auren, why don't we get some galettes or something before the show?"

He raised a brow at her in slight confusion. "Galettes? What are those, Silly?"

She giggled lightly, forgetting that few people knew that terminology. "Fried bread dough, Sparky. Galettes is French." She padded ahead of him, flicking her tail in his face, as she headed towards the nearest food cart. Auren tried to keep up with her, thinking how lucky it was that everything was free among the streets.

As they approached the cart, they ordered a giant galette to share and a two small sticks of cotton candy. They carried it in a bag by their mouths as they attempted to find a hill to sit on to see the fireworks clearly.

The streets were quite populated, making it a bit difficult to get through easily. A mime dressed in rags with a poor make-up job came at Faihra's side, mocking Auren with the bag and attempting to make fun of his walk. Faihra started to laugh, but seeing Auren turn to her with a surprised look, she rolled her eyes at the clown. Eventually he gave up, loosing his audience.

Finally reaching the town's outskirts and settling on a small hill, Auren set the bag down, ripped it open, and tore a piece off of the galette with his mouth. Looking at Faihra, he offered it to her with his eyes. Shyly, she took a few steps closer, reaching up to pry it from his muzzle. Fighting the urge to kiss him, she pulled it away as fast as she could, wondering why he gave it to her in such a strange way.

The first firework was set off. It rose high in the sky, bursting into a mixture of greens and blues. "Here it goes," She said, now munching on her cotton candy snack stick. When finished, having nothing but the cardboard stick left, she swung it at Auren playfully, a smile on her face as she sat there.

The cardboard caught Auren off guard. Suddenly he perked up his ears and widened his eyes, wondering what just hit the side of his head. Seeing what it was, he put on a devious smirk. "Now you're going to get it child."

Child?" She laughed. "I'd change my vocabulary if I was you."

He leapt at her, tackling her to the ground as they rolled around. He reached for his cotton candy, throwing pieces of it in her face as she fought underneath him.

Time was flying as they played together, the Grand Finale finally taking place. With every explosion, a deep contrast between the highlights and shadows on their faces could be seen, adding to the growing atmosphere between the two.

Suddenly they stopped, Auren still holding her down, but now his eyes stared passionately into her's. They didn't smile, only stared at eachother. She still had sticky bits of cotton candy around her face, so he leaned down and began to lick them, kissing the areas softly to dissolve the sweet sugar. When he finished, he smiled, rolling off her and laying at her side, nuzzling his maw into the back of her neck.

Chapter III.
It was exciting- their first date as a couple. Faihra was now this giddy little school with hearts in her eyes, and she was loving it. Auren appearred the same, enthusiasm included.

Ryan tried helping Faihra prepare herself, him knowing all there could be to hygiene and appearance, since he was very much into his own. He had bottles layed out across the cottage floor, brushes of all shapes and size, and other things she couldn't recognize.

What's this do?" She asked, reaching for a zig-zag-like bottle.

His tail swatted her paw away from it. "That's a pelt-shine mousse. It's a finishing touch, so don't touch it because you have a long way to go before you're even close to that point, my dear."

She rolled her eyes and huffed. He had already been 'working his magic' on her for over an hour.

A few more hours went by, and a scratch was heard at the main door. It was Auren, she could feel it. Ryan pulled the door open with his jaws, smirking yet shaking his head at his friend. "You don't know what you're in for."

Auren's eyes grew wide, as well as his welcoming smile. His lower jaw dropped a bit in awe as he saw his girlfriend enter the entrance hall. She was glittering before him... "Faihra, I'm speechless. I've never seen a star shine as bright as you are right now."

He was a sweet-talker, it melted her heart, making her nervous and tingly all over. Soon they were out the door, padding along side eachother on the forest paths in a direction she was never curious to venture. "Do you know where you're going?" She questioned, raising a brow at him.

Auren turned to her and smiled. "Of course I do. You should trust me, I won't let you down."

She took comfort in his words, her first attempt at truly trusting him on such a level. Growing up with him, how could she not trust him? He had always been a faithful friend to herself and her brother. She wasn't going to start doubting him now.

The forest started to fade; the trees were fewer, and so was the grass. Sand was engulfing the forest floor, she could feel the particles wedging between her toes. Suddenly she stopped walking, gawking at what lay before her. A small beach, stretching quite a few feet, moonlight making the water's surface sparkle like she had never seen.

Are you coming?" He laughed, watching her as he made his way towards the water. "I assure you, a swim will do us good."

Once again, she attempted to trust her words. She didn't really want to swim, she had never particularly enjoyed the action, but found herself ankle deep in the chilling liquid. "It's cold," She said, trying her best not to sound like she was complaining.

Auren was shoulder deep in the water, wading back to give her that push she needed. "I'll go the rest of the way with you, I'll keep you warm." He wrapped his tail around her, his body pressing against her side.

It didn't help; the water was colder than any warmth his body may have shared, plus he himself was cold from the water he had already been in. Still, she made her way in until they were both paddling above the surface.

She laughed, wading closer to his face. "Do you have any idea the work Ryan went through to make me like this?"

Make you like what?" He replied. "You're beautiful like you were the last time I saw you."

A bashful emotion overwhelmed her, she couldn't help but smile after a comment like that. Suddenly he moved closer to her, wrapping his tail around her body to drag her closer as well. He had a different kind of look in his eye... on one hand, it was the same Auren. On the other, it was a devious passion she had yet to see.

Their foreheads were now touching. His steel blue eyes were locked intensely on her's of amber. She was nervous now, but not in the same excited way as before. She didn't know what he was going to do next with that look on his face. "Auren, you don't seem like yourself." She whispered.

A meek smile was visible across his maw. "The water brings something out in me, it takes everything away. Takes away the embarrassment, the timid actions, the doubts, the curiosity, the analyzation... All that's left is the movement."

She understood, but it still made her worry. That is, it did, until he kissed her. His theory about the water's effects became all the more clear to her.

Chapter IV.
Faihra sat by the window for hours of each day, watching the leaves change colors before they would fall to the ground... Where had Auren been for so long?

Lately she found herself going on more walks through the forest paths; she wasn't sure if they were to calm her nerves, or if they were meant to be used a search tool for the one she was falling for. She only saw him a couple times after their date among the water.

She decided to go on another walk, though it was dark, and though it would be her third for the day. There was just something about tonight that made her hopeful, but it was short... She sighed, wondering if her doubt would be right again.

Fog gathered at her ankles, and silhouettes filled her amber eyes. They all seemed to look like Auren's figure, but then... one of them must have been his! His scent had been caught. "Auren?" She called out softly, wondering if he'd return the sound.

The darkened figure moved slightly, turning it's head so it was facing her. Slowly it came out into the speckles of moonlight that poured through the treetops, splashing onto his fur, and revealing that it was, in fact, Aurenyr.

His face was solemn, and he seemed less like himself- worse than the night in the water. There was a vibe shooting from his figure, and it chilled Faihra's bones. It was cold and distant, and it certainly wasn't her Auren. "Auren, I haven't seen you in weeks..." She approached, hoping to nuzzle his chest warmingly, but she could feel his denial of her approach. She stopped nearing.

And yet you're still alive," He responded monotonously, never meeting her eyes.

She kept staring at his face, but she was tempted to fix her eyes on the ground, resorting to a shy school-girl with nothing else to say. "Where'd you go?" She muttered, even quietly than before.

He turned his head away from her completely. "Where I wanted."

Auren...!" Concern filled her voice. "...why?"

He sighed as he turned back to her, getting closer to find her eyes. "Who were we kidding, kid?"

Her eyes started to water, but she stood strong, holding her head up as high as she could. "Apparently me..."

Look," He began his explanation. "It's too wierd for me. I want to... to protect you, but I can't if you make me vulnerable."

Will I see you again?"

I already said how wierd it is now..."

Now she broke her gaze, turning her head and lowering it at her right. She loved how he went about this.

Faihra..." He whispered, laying his head on her shoulder. "Don't cry... don't cry for me."

She pulled away at his words. After a moment of glaring, her eyes turning as cold as his distant vibe. "I'm not."

He tilted his head in curiosity, wondering what she was talking about. "Then I should probably leave you finally... Can I have just one goodbye? I understand if it's too much..."

How could he ask that of her? But... she wanted it, too. Regardless of how he hurt her, she still wanted him, felt for him. She took a couple steps towards him, ready to enter a hug-like embrace, but froze when there was an inch between them.

Suddenly she was overwhelmed with every feeling they ever shared together- as friends, as sweethearts, as lovers.

There the two stayed, standing that inch apart, for quite some time.

Then they walked away, walked apart, and never saw each other again.
