You enter into a dark room, lit only by the dim blue glow of a peophin sitting around a pond silently. From what you can see, his coat is a dull greyish purple, and his wavy mane is almost black. His red eyes stare out sadly into the pond, as if he was watching something. But in the pond there was nothing. An ear twitches, and he turns his gaze to you. You stay silent, unsure of what to say. All you can do is gaze into his lifeless eyes, mesmerized. He gets up and you can see that he has white socks on each leg. He slowly moves toward you, and you stay absolutely still.
He stops directly in front of you and lowers his head to be at your eye level. You don't expect it, but all of a sudden a soft, quiet sound comes from his lips.
Boo.
About
I am a ghost. I am no longer living, but I am still tied to this earth in this wretched form. Every day I wish I could go back and make things better, for myself and for the one I loved.
I am always hungry, but I cannot eat. My hooves cannot even touch the ground I once walked on so proudly. Everything I could once do it forbidden to me in this form. But there is hope. By being in this spectral body, there is a chance that I can return to my formal self. I was given a tiny shred of hope to keep to when I found out that by floating through any unsuspecting being, I can draw out some of their life force to build up the one I lost. Each day I am getting just a little closer. But after a year I still have not found myself in my former glory.
The Final Moments
This was the night. It was years ago, when I was alive. Way back to the original Meridell/Darigan War. The Darigan forces were building up strength, and tonight we would attack a Meridellian camp tucked into a valley in an attempt to stop the flow of troops to the Meridellian front line.
But before I was to pull into my ranks, I had to sever my ties to the one I loved.
I turned my back to the petite silver mare, trying to keep my harsh, unforgiving look on my face. This was the time to finally take back what those Meridellian idiots had stolen from us. I couldn't just back out! But thoughts had come into my mind. What if we just ran away? Away from the war, and what we were used to. We could be safe, and live in peace.
No! I would not abandon my duties so easily.
Beau, please, don't go! I heard her call. Beau. My name when I was living.
I ignored her. I walked towards the line that was forming in preparation for attack, like a proper soldier would. It broke my heart, but I was obligated to fight, just as she was. I wished for her to come out of this unscathed, but on the battlefield many things could happen.
Please! She called one last time. Her final cry landed on deaf ears. I pulled into the line beside neopets that I would probably never see again. They were my companions, my comrades. There was no telling how many of us would make it out alive. But the cause we were fighting for was a noble one, and one we would willingly die for.
As the last of the foot soldiers came into the ranks, we all fastened our shields to our arms, and grasped our swords. This being rather difficult for a peophin, I had long silver legplates fastened to me, the right one with razor-sharp spines protruding from it. The left was wider and thicker, but still was adorned by the sharp spines. I had a newly polished dagger attached to my tailfin, as well as a faceplate with long rhino-like protrusions to protect myself. Armour plates had already been placed around my back and neck, and I was ready for battle.
A long war cry broke out. Soldiers joined in and held the note one long moment. The battle had begun.
A Battle to Remember
The foot soldiers, such as myself, rushed forward. We rose up on an embankment before having to plunge down into the valley.
The Meridellians were taken by surprise. That was one thing we had in our favour. However, the Meridellian fools knew the lay of the land and had greater numbers. We had to be fierce in order to pummel the camp into the ground. We would take no prisoners.
The Meridellians reacted quickly when they caught sight of us swarming down the sides of the valley like ants coming to devour a meal. Archers hid behind a thick line of soldiers, and began firing arrows from their longbows. Soldiers to my left and right began falling, their armour penetrated by the deadly shafts. Luckily, I was spared the initial firing and threw myself at the Meridellian soldiers.
All hell broke loose. Darigan and Meridellian forces collided, and swords and shields clashed. I rushed through the lines of soldiers, sweeping my tail rhythmically, hamstringing all those that dared get close to me. I put my head down low, only raising it when I saw an opening. Usually, the Meridellian fools would raise their swords ignorantly high, and I would thrust my head and the deadly horns of my faceplate into the one opening of their armour, the armpit. The slightly curved horns would puncture the lung immediately, and I could move onto my next target. I found my pattern, and moved with it systematically, cutting down my enemies with ease.
The battle went on and on. I had received a few cuts and bruises, but other than that I was unscathed.
The Meridellian archers had retreated to the cover of the trees where they picked off any Darigan soldier that came within range.
A young Meridellian soldier ran from the centre of the fighting, and was retreating to the trees like a frightened deer. I galloped after him, a grin appearing on my muzzle. The poor thing was so frightened--it was probably his first battle. When he looked back and saw me, his eyes grew immensely. As I grew nearer, I saw that the young boy was a gelert. He scrambled desperately, and cried out for help. I came down upon him like cheetah that's just come upon an antelope. I grabbed at his clothing with my teeth, and pushed him over with a simple nudge. He rolled on the ground and began whimpering like the dog that he was.
Do not worry child, it shall be quick, I said to him. A chuckle rose from my throat, and echoed through the night air.
The boy quivered as I rose up, flailing my armoured legs. His eyes were like saucers when I reached my full height. I let out a piercing whinny, and imagined myself crushing the boy beneath my feet. He was Meridell scum--
My eyes widened as a sharp pain shot from my chest. My pupils contracted, and I froze. I had risen too far, and now I was falling backwards. My body fell on the upturned earth with a dull thud. I looked down at my own body, and saw the arrow protruding from the soft flesh of my chest. I had come within the archers' range. That damned boy was lucky, I thought to myself. I saw him get up hesitantly, then run full tilt into the trees.
Blood rose from my throat. I was going to die here.
My mind immediately flashed to my love, Rayneance. Was she alright? I prayed that she had managed to stay out of trouble.
The shooting pain that had wracked my body just moments ago was now a constant ache. My vision became blurry, and I felt extremely weak. My breathing slowed, and I knew that death was close.
I thought that I heard Rayneance's voice, but in my state I was probably hearing it within my head. I wanted to see her one last time...
I fell completely limp, and closed my eyes. I took a final breath, and the life I once had seemed to float away.
