Story

Extinelo grabbed a glass of warm milk from the fridge and flopped down on his beat-up old armchair, grinning. It was raining outside. Hard. Thunder made the windows shake and lightning turned his dark room white each time it flashed. He counted the seconds between each flash as the storm raged nearer. First, he could count to three between the flash and the sound. Then he could only make it to two. Then, the storm was right on top of him. As he sipped his milk, he wondered how anyone could be afraid of the storm. Sure, he could understand being afraid of the storm's results- possible flooding, or lightning striking a tree, but the actual storm? No. He loved stormy weather.

His ice blue eyes flicked outside and he started out over the flat grassland he lived on. It had been a small farm at one point, and had mostly produced wheat, but by the edge of the large property a thick patch of brambles had grown along a fence. He ignored the wheat. There were a few bakers in town who stopped by every now and again to see if he'd sell any, but since he never harvested, the answer was always no. There was a tractor in the barn to harvest with, but he figured it would be more trouble than it was worth to figure out how to operate the old thing.

He finished his milk and didn't bother heading for his small bedroom. He was comfortable on his chair, with his head resting on one arm and a hind leg sticking over the other. Why move? Slowly, he dozed off, happily listening to the rain as it grew gentler and gentler.

Open the door! Please, I need help!

Extinelo scrambled up and floundered to the ground, landing ungracefully on his side. Someone was pounding on the door at three thirty in the morning. He grabbed his firewood poker and threw the door open, surprised to see a small plushie kougra at his doorstep, soaking wet and terrified. She threw herself past him and dove behind his chair, hollering at him to close the door. He slammed the door and flicked his purple tail irritably.

What's the matter with you? He asked, displeased with her manners. He hadn't seen anything outside that looked out of the ordinary-certainly nothing that looked worth hiding from. She peeked out shyly from behind the chair, staring at the door with hollow eyes, too spooked to answer him. He sighed, placing his poker back by the fireplace. He grabbed a couple towels and an old quilt from the cupboard and tossed them her way. Dry off and I'll make some tea or something. He hoped that a cup of something warm would calm her down so she'd spill what she was so scared of.

He dug through his old cabinet, noting that the paint had chipped some more. He'd have to repaint them eventually, if he felt like it. He boiled some water once he'd found some old tea leaves. Chammomile, mint, chai...He read their names off one by one in his head. I have no idea how any of these taste. They smell pretty strong. I guess mint can't be bad. Maybe I should try some of these sometime in case I need to host a dinner for work or something.
