Styles & Credentials

Here you can see all the different ways I review. I try to add diversity to my styles. If you have a style suggestion, shoot me a neomail!

Simple Style

This is the standard review, it is recommended for new sites and old alike.

First Impression: ?/10
What are my first thoughts when I enter your site? Do I want to leave or do I want to stay? The first impression can determine whether or not you can attract visitors to your site.

Layout: ?/15
Does it serve its purpose as a neat, organized container for your content? Is it easy to navigate? Is it bland and boring or unique? Can I read the text?

Content: ?/30
This is the most important part of a site. Is it high quality? Is it helpful, useful, entertaining, or interesting? Does it make me want to revisit to see what else you come up with?

Organization: ?/15
Is it squeaky clean or downright dirty? Can I navigate around your site? Can I easily find the content and credits?

Service: ?/10
Ever heard of service with a smiley face? Well, that's what you need to do in order to keep your customers happy. Are your requests always closed (if you have requests)? Do you update to show you're active, thus willing to inform visitors of site news? Are you okay with people asking you questions?

Sitely: ?/5
Do you have link back buttons? Are you listed in the major directories? Are all your affies active?

Spelling & Grammar: ?/5
Do you make it easy to understand you? Or do we have to be fluent in chatspeak to read your site?

Visitor Appeal: ?/5
It the color scheme pleasing? Do I want to come back, and why would I? Does everything mesh together into a professional atmosphere?

Name Recognition: ?/5
Do your buttons make me remember your name? Are you advertising in major communities? Is your name good, and easy to remember?

Score: ?/100

Interview Style

This style of review is for the paranoid site makers (like me) that are always thinking, "Oh is this okay? Does this look bad?"
Ask me anywhere from 5 to 20 questions about your site. I'll answer them as in-depth as possible.
Examples:
How could my layout be improved?
Should I change my banner/what's wrong with my banner?
Are there any reoccurring flaws in my content?

Please do not send in your questions until I've neomailed you confirming that I've received your request. After that, you have 2 days to send in your questions or your request will be deleted.

Visual Style

This is a review with visual aides. I take snapshots of your site, number the points I want to talk about, and then I go full depth. This is really good format for site with problematic layouts.

Extras

Checklist:
This comes with all reviews. I make a graphic checklist, with the major issues listed next to a check box. I also include a short summary of your overall review. Save it to your computer and open it with a graphic program (Paint is best), and check off the list as finish each task.

Advertising Campaign:
Only available for sites scoring A, B, or C+. I will advertise you here for three days.

Credentials

Strengths:

I have over 2 years in coding experience, and therefore I can help you with most coding related issues.
I've been making graphics for over one year, so I know the difference between high-quality and low-quality, and I also can help you improve the quality of your graphics.
I'm a robot when it comes to spelling and grammar, I find errors very easily.
I tend to review quite fast.

Weaknesses:

I don't have the proper knowledge to review writing sites very well.
I'm very bad at reviewing link directories, I'm still learning what to look for within them.

Alaia

Date: May 24th, 2011 // Browser: Internet Explorer

First Impression: 8/10
When I first entered, I was surprised to find that your layout was not centered. By centering the layout, more of the beautiful background will be seen, and it the layout will immediately catch the attention of your audience. Also, there is a major alignment flaw visible as soon you enter the site. The layout is at least 20 pixels too wide, if not more. This causes the layout to be wider than the banner, which looks bad because of the white included in the banner image. To fix this, simply make your layout less wide.

Your second header did not catch my attention, and furthermore it was difficult to read. To fix this, make the text color a shade or two darker, and bump the text size up from 6.5pt to 8pt.
2 points deducted because of layout issues.

Layout: 14.5/15
I only find a few problems with your layout. First, the fact that it scrolls and includes anchored pages is annoying. It makes the entire page 'jump' when I click on a new page. I recommend reducing the scroll of the page as much as possible. Second, the header used for reviews is a little to large, either just state the name of the site in the header, or make the header text smaller so it doesn't stretch the page.
1.5 points deducted for minor issues.

Content: 24/30
(I'm assuming that you've read RSA, and if you haven't, I highly recommend that you do.)
As I was reading through the reviews, I noticed many grammar and spelling issues throughout. Sometimes, this errors made it harder to understand the point you were trying to make. I highly recommend that you spell check all your reviews by hand and with a program, to avoid further confusion. I also noticed that each review section was one long paragraph, even if you changed subjects. This is not only bad form, but it makes all the suggestions and issues blend together, making it hard to for the reviewie to tackle each individual problem after reading the review.

One thing I noticed you include in your review too much is your personal opinion. That is frowned upon in a review because everyone has a different opinion, and the reviewie might not find your opinion valuable. A few examples of this are: I truly love Out of Focus' layouts! (Does this really matter to the reviewie? Does this help the site improve at all?) I actually recommended Forever Fonts to one of my neofriends! (That was nice of you to say, but it shows you have a personal preference to the site, and the preference shows in some of the review. Reviewies tend to want an unbiased review, where you neither hate nor love the site but remain in the middle.)

Lastly, I noticed you tend to ramble in your reviews quite often. You jump from topic to topic (again, all in the same paragraph), and sometimes you get completely sidetracked with something else. Reread every review before you publish it, and remove all the 'fluff' and conversational bits.
6 points deducted for hard to follow reviews, useless rambling, and personal opinions cluttering reviews.

Organization: 14/15
Mostly, Alaia is an organized quite well. However, I found a few flaws that need to be addressed.

First, the review style boxes are all misaligned and don't match up. To fix this, use a new table for each row, and make every table the same length with an overflow.

Second, the link back section is awfully messy. To fix the spacing issues, make each text area 88 pixels wide, with a margin of at least 2 pixels.
1 point deducted for 2 small alignment issues.

Service: 8/10
In the one short month you've been open, you've finished five reviews, which is wonderful. However, you have 7 people waiting on the waiting list, and Fallen Reviews has been waiting for a review since April 30th! I highly recommend that you close reviews for now, at least until you finish up to Bluebird. I'm stressing this because, as reviewers, if we push ourselves too hard and let our waiting list fill up, we burnout much faster than if we'd closed reviews.
2 points deducted for overflowing waiting list and the long waiting period.

Sitely: 4.5/5
Your sitely section is rather nice. However, you should space after each button (in every section) to make sure that the buttons don't touch each other and look cramped.

Also, to shorten your credits, you can make your link back buttons link back to the creator, instead of listing them in the credits. You don't have to, however.
.5 of a point deducted for a small issue.

Spelling & Grammar: 0/5
This is by far the most disappointing part about Alaia. There are more than 5 mistakes in every single review, and over 5 in just the introduction. I strongly urge you to spell check your entire site by hand and with a program. I've seen run on sentences, capitalization were it's not needed, the wrong contractions used, and misspellings all over the place.

Think of it like this: the more mistakes you make, the less the reviewie and average visitor can understand you.
5 points deducted for over multiple errors throughout the site.

Visitor Appeal: 5/5
The visitor appeal here is amazing. The colors are pleasant, the layout is easy to navigate, and the entire site is well planned and thought out. I only have one suggestion; to make the text easier to read, add a line spacing of 18 pixels (check my coding if you need to.)
0 points deducted.

Name Recognition: 5/5
Perfect. The name is easy to pronounce and short. Your buttons nicely convey your site theme, connecting the name 'Alaia' with the beach and your site. I've seen you advertised in many of the main directories, so you're working hard to get the name Alaia remembered and recognized.
0 points deducted.

Score: 83/100 (B-)

Don't forget to pick up your checklist, and I'll advertise you for a week starting on May 24th!

Find A Laugh

Date: May 24th, 2011 // Browser: Google Chrome

First Impression: 9/10
When I first entered, I was immediately attracted to your title, because of the eye-catching font and the placement of your banner. The white space after the banner however, directed my attention away from your first header. To fix this, either remove some of the extra space after the banner, or make the first header's text slightly larger.

I also noticed that your layout isn't completely lined up with your banner, but I suggest you keep your coding the same, as layout alignment usually varies from computer to computer.

The navigation doesn't stand out enough, the text links are hard to read. I recommend making the size of the main navigation links bigger, but keeping the directory navigation the same.
1 point deducted for the white space and the navigation issue.

Layout: 14/15
Your layout is very simple, and easy to navigate. The blues contrast the black and white, making the color scheme easy on the eyes.

For the top of the boxes in the main directory, I suggest that you lighten the background slightly, to add contrast between the amount of likes and the actual information. Also, try to attract more attention to the actual site link inside the box by either bolding it, or adding a different effect than the username link. I found myself confused several times over which link was which. 1 point deducted for the link box issues.

Content: 30/30
Not only do you provide the most extensive list of screenies available on Neopets, you also list other funny sites. The fact that you also have activities for your audience is awesome, and they add a nice touch to the site. I have nothing to suggest, as you work so hard on this site, and it shows in the result printed on the petpage. Excellent work, Weapon.
0 points deducted.

Organization: 14.5/15
The only problem I found is a slight one. In the main directory, try starting each new letter on a new line, to lessen the clutter on each line.
.5 of a point deducted for a very small issue.

Service: 10/10
The service you provide is amazing, you respond to all neomails quickly and efficiently. You do everything with your viewer's convenience in mind, I can tell. The fact that you interact with your audience via actives shows that you care about keeping them entertained. Well played, Weapon, and very nicely done.
0 points deducted.

Sitely: 4.5/5
The only issue here is the link back buttons. All of them are completely fine, however since Find A Laugh is so old, they are outdated in style. I'd recommend requesting one or two new 'fashionable' link back buttons, just so visitors have the option. Check The Status Center for open button requests. (I'm sorry if this is nitpicky, but I feel that new link back buttons wouldn't hurt to have.)
.5 of a point deducted for outdated link button styles.

Spelling & Grammar: 5/5
I didn't find any mistakes. (Oh, and by the way, nice grammar. It's refreshing to see nowadays.)
0 points deducted.

Visitor Appeal: 5/5
Everything about your site screams I'm made to please you, please come in! Like I said earlier, the fact that you have activities draws in many repeat visitors. Again, well done.
0 points deducted.

Name Recognition: 5/5
I've seen you advertise on the Neoboards, the major directories, and the name Find A Laugh is well known all around Neopia. The fact that you're so established, and that you work your booty off advertising, is what makes you well known. And the name choice is very fitting for what you offer.
0 points deducted.

Score: 89/100 (B+)
