How to Find and Use a Preposition

You probably know how you use a preposition already, but you don't know that you know. For instance, you could be saying to your wonderful pet right now, "Let's go to Hubert's Hot Dogs, it's just around the corner." Now, there are two prepositions in that phrase. To, and Around. See? You've used it already!

A NEW CONCEPT: Prepositional Phrase. A Prepositional Phrase (PP for short), always begins with a preposition, and ends with a noun/pronoun. It CANNOT have a verb/adverb between the noun and the preposition.

Example One: "Let's go to Hubert's Hot Dogs, it's just around the corner." "To Hubert's Hot Dogs" is a prepositional phrase. "Around the corner" is a prepositional phrase too.

Example Two: "Let's go to eat lunch!" Has no PP's. To is a preposition, but it is followed by a verb, and so is not a pp. To † Verb (such as To Eat) is called an infinitive.

Not Is Not

Not is not a verb. Not is an adverb. So many people think not is a verb, that it annoys me. So, not is not a verb, not is an adverb. And SOME people think that not is a preposition. How stupid. Oh, and that absolutely cute baby Aisha crying about Not, that's ME!! When I was only 2 hours old and screaming about not's and adverbs.

Prepositions As Adverbs

A preposition that is NOT followed by a noun or pronoun is an adverb. An adverbic preposition is a preposition that does not belong in a pp.

"The Usul climbed up and down the tree" has two prepositions in it., Up and Down. However, only Down  is followed by a noun/pronoun (in this case, tree) UP is now an adverb, because it doesn't belong in a prepositional phrase. Now this little section is done. Phew!

Prepositional Review

Here are some basic worksheet's to try with! (You probably will not even read past this sentence and get to the worksheets, but just go straight home) And test your prepositional brain on it. Okay, here goes!

HALT!!!!

OOOH! I FORGOT! The object of a prepositional phrase is the noun/pronoun at the end of the prepositional phrase!

AND ANOTHER!!! The object of the pp DOES NOT include the adjective the noun/pronoun comes with. For example, the object of "off the garbage truck" is truck, not garbage truck.

Okay, now to the worksheets!

Okay... This is the Worksheet Lady (Lady of Worksheets, etc.) She is the one that does all the stuff about the instructions of the worksheet and how you grade it and stuff. She will guide you through everything. Now I will disappear! Wallah! I am gone!

Hi! I am the Worksheet Lady, who makes all these worksheets and tests and quizzes you have. you must hate me... right? But it is for the good of you, because afterwards, if you succeed the test, you feel pride and confidence. And other stuff too...

Anyway, I have talked too much. Onto the worksheet! This is the worksheet. If you wish to print it out, print it. But for now, read it.

Instructions: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Underline the object of the preposition. If there is no pp, write NONE before the sentence. Overline the adverb, and place parentheses on the infinitive. Question Number One is done for you.

  1. One of the players came over (to talk) to my mother.

  2. The garbage truck has stopped near the corner of Blues Street.

  3. GO TO THE STORE NOW!

  4. May I sit between Todd and you?

  5. You may not go through without a ticket.

  6. She approached the table, looked underneath, and found two giggling Nimmos holding onto a broken Usuki.

  7. The Gelert went outside and ran around in a circle.

  8. His sister pretended to be angry with him.

  9. We will be rowing on the lake after sunset today.

  10. I hope you found out what the new parking space is going to be, because mum and dad are getting impatient, and will be going to talk to the manager if we don't get our parking back.
