Christie's Food Club Bets
Welcome to my Food Club page! I've been playing Food Club for many years and it's my main source of profit on Neopets. I generally make pretty safe sets, but I do try to hit the upsets when the odds look suspicious. My ROI is a pretty decent 1.55, so I must be doing something right!

Feel free to look at or use my bets, or click any of the links to explore guides, statistics, and other bettors' pages. Check out my guide to crafting bets (with examples!) below, and to learn more about my strategy.

If you need any help or have questions about Food Club, feel free to neomail me, or check out the games section of the Neoboards and chat with us there. Happy Betting!

Jan 17: Round 7195

Betting risky today! Or is it a risk if the pirates are due for a win? Or a loss? In any case, these bets aren't safe. Fairfax and Sproggie need wins and I'm putting everything on one (or both) or them to upset today. I think Stripey at +4 has as good a chance as Fairfax to win, but covering him with the other arenas so terrible will take too many bets to be worthwhile. For that reason, I'm splitting my bets between Fairfax and Sproggie and hoping one of them takes it. Two would be absolutely amazing but let's not get greedy :D

Last Round's Winnings: 16:10.

The Betting Process

The Goal

My overall goal is always to find a way to cover all the pertinent pirates in my selection of arenas such that the only way I can lose would be to a starter-13:1 upset or a double upset. This isn't always possible, but I try to get as close to this goal as possible when I am deciding how to bet. This makes for fairly safe, reliable sets. They don't bring in as much profit as a risky set, but they hit far more often.

I usually use three or four arenas, depending on how the odds are set up. Sometimes I can even use all five. I usually do not bet on pirates that start out and stay at 13:1 (what I call starter-13:1s), and I usually do not cover double upsets--unless something looks particularly suspicious and profitable. Since I use all ten bets, I must make sure my profit is at least 10:1 to break even.

I make use of Food Adjustments as well as winning/losing streaks to determine which arenas have the most upset potential, and then I try and take advantage of those higher-odd pirates by pairing them with as many others as possible. If a pirate has a very high FA or desperately needs a win, I will bet heavily on them even if it seems unwise to do so; even if they are at 13:1 or as part of a double-upset combo. In essence, the 2:1s become my safeties while the bulk of my bets cover the pirates who can give better profit. I still try to create a relatively safe set of bets and stick to my goal--I just choose certain pirates to receive more coverage over others.

Arena Types

So how do you know how to bet? Safe or risky? Broad coverage in five arenas or selective betting of certain pirates? You need to look at the five arenas and the odds of the pirates in each to decide which ones are viable to use in crafting your set.

  • First, choose the pirate you think is most likely to win in each arena, using whatever methods and tools you prefer (odds, food adjustment, streaks, pirates against etc). Decide how sure you are that each chosen pirate will win and if there are any suspicious factors that might signal an upset.
  • The best arenas to bet in are ones with a single 2:1 pirate and the other three at 5:1 odds or higher. The best kind of arena set-up is 2/13/13/13. That's usually a cause for ten-betting that pirate. These arenas are great because fewer bets are needed to cover upset possibilities in other arenas. Just stick your 2:1 with a suspicious 7:1 elsewhere and that's all you need to safety him. TIP: I usually wait until the morning to bet so I can factor odds-changes into my bets. A pirate at 4:1 who goes up to 6:1 will free up some extra bets for you to use elsewhere since you can safety him in fewer bets.
  • Conversely, an arena that has pirates at 2:1, 2:1, 3:1 and 6:1 is not a very good arena to bet in and is likely best skipped. If you've got a couple of really great arenas like those described above, then even a poor arena can potentially be useful. But if you've got just one great arena, you're going to need to use at least seven bets to cover something like this, and you can probably get more out of your bets using other arenas.
  • Sometimes you'll get an arena with no 2:1s. They usually look like this: 3:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1. These can be good or bad, depending on how the other arenas are set up. Since it has no 2:1s, you don't need to go through the hassle of making an 8:1 bet (2 x 2 x 2) and then a 4:1 booster to bring profit up to 12:1. You can just do a 2 x 3 x 2 and get that 12:1 in a single bet. However, if the other arenas have some nice 13:1s you can safely ignore, an arena like this one might use up more bets than you need to get the same kind of coverage.

Crafting Your Set

Use a methodical, logical manner when crafting your bets so that you don't end up with holes that you meant to cover but missed. Let's say you choose to bet in four arenas because it's a really good day. Grab three 2:1s that you think will win and include them in bets with all the pirates in a fourth arena where you suspect an upset is most likely (not including starter-13:1s). That's usually 3-4 bets. Then will drop that arena and look at which of the other three is most likely to have an upset. Use those first two 2:1s in conjunction with the pirates who are fighting against that third 2:1, creating more safeties. Then drop that arena and just deal with the two left over, pairing each 2:1 with the upset possibilities in the other arena. If you have bets left after that, you can cover double-upsets or boost a less-profitable bet. These bets should all be at least 10:1 or more. If not, you'll have to throw in a smaller bet or use the fifth arena to boost it. On okay or poor days, sometimes it's better to create your safeties first and then let the number of bets left over decide your coverage. See the examples below to get a better idea of how to create a variety of sets!

Example Set: Great Day

Let's say you have a really nice setup like this:

Shipwreck Lagoon Treasure Island Hidden Cove Harpoon Harry's
Gooblah2:1Buck2:1Lucky2:1Fed2:1Franch2:1
Dan4:1Ned5:1Sproggie2:1Orvinn7:1Stripey3:1
Tailhook10:1Cross7:1Fairfax13:1Sir Ed9:1Bonnie4:1
Puffo13:1Stuff13:1Pegleg13:1Beard13:1Squire13:1

Here's how I would craft my bets for the day:

  1. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Fran (16:1)
  2. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Stripey (24:1)
  3. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Bonnie (40:1)
  4. Goobs x Ned x Fed (20:1)
  5. Goobs x Cross x Fed (28:1)
  6. Goobs x Orvinn (14:1)
  7. Goobs x Ed (18:1)
  8. Tail x Fed (20:1)
  9. Dan x Fed x Lucky (16:1)
  10. Dan x Fed x Sproggie (16:1)

The best arenas are LA and HC because they have one 2:1 and everyone else 5:1 or higher. SW is also not bad to use, although it does take an extra bet to cover Dan.

I chose to cover the three pertinent pirates in HH in the first three bets. They are all very close in odds and any of them could win.

With my next two bets, I dropped HH and safetied the pirates competing with Buck. I don't need a Goobs x Buck x Fed because I already paired Buck with the pirates in HH (Although you could deliberately stack the bets in order to hit more than one if you like. Keep in mind you would have to remove or change the safeties to do so in this particular example).

In bets 6-10 I am covering upsets in SW and HC. Goobs gets paired with the pirates against Fed, while Fed gets paired with the pirates against Goobs. Because Dan is only at 4:1, pairing him with Fed would only generate 8:1, which is not a profit since I am making 10 bets. Therefore, bets 9-10 include Lucky and Sproggie from TI as multipliers to ensure there is profit.

Example Set: Okay Day

Let's say the round is set up like this:

Shipwreck Lagoon Treasure Island Hidden Cove Harpoon Harry's
Fran2:1 Buck2:1 Sir Ed2:1 Dan2:1 Fed2:1
Bonnie4:1Ned6:1Lucky4:1Gooblah2:1Tailhook2:1
Fairfax11:1Squire13:1Stripey5:1Beard12:1Puffo8:1
Orvinn13:1Cross13:1Pegleg13:1Stuff13:1Sproggie13:1

Here's how I would craft my bets for the day:

  1. Fran x Ned (12:1)
  2. Bonnie x Buck x Dan (12:1)
  3. Bonnie x Buck x Goobs (12:1)
  4. Buck x Blackbeard (24:1)
  5. Fair x Buck (22:1)
  6. Fran x Buck x Dan (8:1)
  7. Fran x Buck x Goobs (8:1)
  8. Fran x Buck x Tail (8:1)
  9. Fran x Buck x Fed (8:1)
  10. Fran x Buck x Puffo (32:1)

Alternatively:

  1. Fran x Ned (12:1)
  2. Bonnie x Buck x Dan (12:1)
  3. Bonnie x Buck x Goobs (12:1)
  4. Buck x Blackbeard (24:1)
  5. Fair x Buck (22:1)
  6. Fran x Buck x Ed x Goobs (16:1)
  7. Fran x Buck x Ed x Dan (16:1)
  8. Fran x Buck x Lucky (16:1)
  9. Fran x Buck x Stripey (20:1)
  10. Fran x Buck x Pegleg (24:1)

This time I crafted the safeties first and then put together the 2:1 bets at the end. This allowed me to set aside the bets I absolutely had to make and then see how many bets were left over to play around with. Bets 1-5 are identical in both sets. There were two ways to set up Bets 6-10, both with merit.

LA is a great arena while SW is useable, though not ideal. In the real round, Bonnie's odds increased to 6:1, which made it a lot easier to craft a nice set of bets, but the 4:1 works better for this example.

Bet 1 is a no-brainer and covers an upset by Ned. As usual, we're ignoring starter-13:1s like Squire and Cross. Bets 2-4 all safety Bonnie. Yeah, three bets to safety one pirate. This is why it's great when a pirate at 4:1 has their odds increase; if Bonnie was at 6:1, we'd just do a Bonnie x Buck bet and that would be it, freeing up the other two bets to be used elsewhere. In any case, Bonnie x Buck yields only 8:1, so we bring in Goobs and Dan to ensure a profit above 10:1. Since Beard is a shifty 12:1, it's important to safety him as well. I did not safety him with Bonnie x Buck x Beard because I've used Goobs and Dan in other bets as well; this safety is not just for Bonnie but also for bets 6-7 (both sets).

Now that the safeties for SW and LA are done, there are five bets left to craft our 2:1 coverage. I could use HC and HH, or I could use TI and HC. In the former, Fran and Buck are combined with all four 2:1s in HC and HH, plus a safety on Puffo. An upset by Beard, Stuff or Sproggie would only affect the bets in that arena, meaning you could still hit 8:1 in the other (and if Beard wins, you also hit Bet 4).

In the latter, Fran and Buck are combined with all four pirates of HC, and there are two Ed bets that include Buck and Goobs to boost the 8:1 bet to 16:1. This set differs little in profit from the first if the 2:1s win, but will give more profit than the first if Puffo, Stripey or Peg wins. You need to weigh the options and decide which outcome you think is most likely, then bet accordingly. This is where I rely even more heavily on FAs and streaks to tip the balance one way or the other.

Example Set: Poor Day

Let's say you have this awful setup:

Shipwreck Lagoon Treasure Island Hidden Cove Harpoon Harry's
Gooblah2:1Buck2:1Ned2:1Fed2:1Sproggie2:1
Dan2:1Tail2:1Bonnie3:1Fran3:1Beard4:1
Fairfax13:1Lucky5:1Sir Ed4:1Stripey5:1Orvinn13:1
Puffo13:1Stuff13:1Pegleg13:1Cross7:1Squire13:1

Here's how I would craft my bets for the day:

  1. Goobs x Buck x Sproggie (8:1)
  2. Dan x Buck x Sproggie (8:1)
  3. Goob x Tail x Sproggie (8:1)
  4. Dan x Tail x Sproggie (8:1)
  5. Lucky x Sproggie (10:1)
  6. Goobs x Sproggie (4:1)
  7. Dan x Sproggie (4:1)
  8. Goobs x Beard (8:1)
  9. Dan x Beard (8:1)
  10. Beard (4:1)

Clearly we aren't going to make as much profit as on a good day, but every little bit matters if you are going for a trophy run or if you just like to make neopoints (who doesn't?). Plus, some people just don't like to skip a day. Usually you don't see the odds this bad, but once in a while it happens.

Choosing the arenas to bet in is the thing to consider on a day like this. SW and HH are the best because they only have two viable potential winners. We can't even consider covering a starting 13:1 here unless you want to take some risk and leave something else uncovered (and on a day like this, that might actually be a better strategy; keep reading to the end!). We're staying out of HC because there are four pirates to cover and we just don't have enough bets to do it. On a good day, an arena like HC wouldn't necessarily be a problem. Because we have to use both Goobs and Dan as multipliers, it cuts our bets in half because whatever we do for one pirate, we have to mirror that with the other. The same is true of Buck and Tail to an extent.

Today we're aiming to hit one or two bets to make profit. Anything below 10:1 will make us lose money, but those little 4:1 bets will stack on top of the 8:1s and give us 12:1 in total.

Bets 1-4 cover the basic 2:1s in SW, LA and HH. Bet 5 covers a win by Lucky while Bets 6-7 boost the 8:1 Sproggie bets to 12:1. This is an example of stacking bets, where you have multiple bets that include various combos of the same pirates, enabling you to hit more than one bet. Bets 8-10 cover Blackbeard. Note that I chose to combine Goobs and Dan with Blackbeard rather than use Buck and Tail. This is because I don't have a bet available to safety a Lucky x Beard combo. This way if Stripey and Blackbeard both win, I still profit off my Blackbeard bets since they don't include LA. Buck and Tail are used solely to boost profit on Sproggie, thus Lucky's safety only needs to be with Sproggie.

So it's a pretty safe set, but also a very boring one. On days like this, I get very tempted to throw caution out the window and make riskier moves. I figure if I'm going to make a measly 12:1 anyway, why not risk a loss and aim higher? If I'm not particularly confident about a certain pirate then I will stick with this set, but let's say someone like Stripey or Tails has been on a very long losing streak or has +5 FA, while Buck has won 6 in a row. If I see a situation like that, I might decide to treat them like a lone 2:1 in an arena full of 13:1s and ten-bet them (or close to it). I can afford the loss if I'm wrong; you should stick with the safe bets if you are watching your neopoints.
