Nov 14: 7131
An easy day to bet. Three safeties for Buck and Goobs, then combos with HC and HH (4 bets) form the basic structure. I had 3 bets left that I chose to put Buck x Goobs x SW to hopefully hit two bets--although I considered safetying the double upset possibilities in LA and TI.
Important Notes

Timings

The time at which each round is judged is glitched and the results come out later than they are supposed to. Currently each round resets at about 3:18 pm NST, and this time increases by a few seconds each day.

Holding

In order to win a trophy in Food Club, you need to hold your winnings and collect them all at once. You can hold for a maximum of 8 rounds, but you must collect after the 8th round but before midnight NST or else the winnings from the first day of your hold will be lost.

Copying Bets

Feel free to copy any of the bets linked here. We post them to share and help others. Keep in mind that everyone uses different strategies, and there is no guarantee you will win with any set of bets. Upsets are always a possibility. In addition, if you choose to copy bets, it is best to copy all 10 as they are set up in such a way as to cover as many possibilities as possible; not using all 10 could leave you vulnerable to loss.

Odds Changes

  • The odds for any given pirate can fluctuate throughout the day. Sometimes you can predict them and other times not. The odds listed on my page are the odds of the pirates at the time I made my bets.
  • If you win, the odds of the pirate when the gates close are the ones that matter, even if you made your bets earlier when the pirate was at different odds.
  • When a pirate's odds change, that just means more or fewer people bet on that pirate than expected. A pirate at 10:1 who goes up to 13:1 because few people bet on him still technically has a 10:1 chance to win.

Betting Strategy and How to Bet

My goal each day is to find a set of bets that covers a good range of 2:1s as well as the pirates that could potentially upset them. I usually use three or four arenas, depending on how the odds are set up. I usually do not bet on pirates that start out and stay at 13:1, and I usually do not cover double upsets.

I make use of Food Adjustments as well as winning/losing streaks to determine which arenas have the most upset potential, and then I try and take advantage of those higher-odd pirates by pairing them with as many others as possible. If a pirate has a very high FA or desperately needs a win, I will bet heavily on them even if it seems unwise to do so; even if they are at 13:1 or as part of a double-upset combo. In essence, the 2:1s are my safeties while the bulk of my bets cover the pirates who can give better profit.

So how do I make my bets? It's like this:

  • First I look at all the arenas, FAs and streaks, and choose the pirate I think is most likely to win in each arena (These pirates form my Gambit bets for the competition we have on the Neoboards). I decide how sure I am that the pirate will win or how suspicious I am of an upset.
  • The best arenas to bet in are ones with a single 2:1 pirate and the other three at 5:1 odds or higher. Fewer bets are needed to cover upset possibilities in these arenas. Unless I suspect an upset, I will include these 2:1s in the majority of my bets. I usually wait until the morning to bet so I can factor odds-changes into my bets.
  • I have a very methodical way of betting. Let's say I choose to bet in four arenas. I'll grab three 2:1s that I think will win and include them in bets with all the pirates in a fourth arena where I suspect an upset is most likely (not including starter 13:1s). That's usually 3-4 bets. Then I will drop that arena and look at which of the other three is most likely to have an upset. I'll use those same 2:1s in conjunction with the pirates who are fighting against that third 2:1, creating more safeties. Do you follow me? Then I'll drop that arena and just deal with the two left over, pairing each 2:1 with the upset possibilities in the other arena. These bets should all be at least 10:1 or more. If not, I have to throw in a smaller bet or use the fifth arena to boost it.

Example Set of Bets: A Good Day

Let's say the round is set up like this:

SW: Goobs (2), Dan (4), Tail (10), Puffo (13)
LA: Buck (2), Ned (5), Cross (7), Stuff (13)
TI: Lucky (2), Sproggie (2), Fair (13), Peg (13)
HC: Fed (2), Orvinn (7), Ed (9), Beard (13)
HH: Fran (2), Stripey (3), Bonnie (4), Squire (13)

Here's how I would set up my bets for the day.

1. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Fran (16:1)
2. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Stripey (24:1)
3. Goobs x Buck x Fed x Bonnie (40:1)
4. Goobs x Ned x Fed (20:1)
5. Goobs x Cross x Fed (28:1)
6. Goobs x Orvinn (14:1)
7. Goobs x Ed (18:1)
8. Tail x Fed (20:1)
9. Dan x Fed x Lucky (16:1)
10. Dan x Fed x Sproggie (16:1)

The best arenas are LA and HC because they have one 2:1 and everyone else 5:1 or higher. SW is also not bad to use, although it does take an extra bet to cover Dan.

I chose to cover the three pertinent pirates in HH in the first three bets. They are all very close in odds and any of them could win.

With my next two bets, I dropped HH and safetied the pirates competing with Buck. I don't need a Goobs x Buck x Fed because I already paired Buck with the pirates in HH (Although you could deliberately stack the bets in order to hit more than one if you like. Keep in mind you would have to remove or change the safeties to do so in this particular example).

In bets 6-10 I am covering upsets in SW and HC. Goobs gets paired with the pirates against Fed, while Fed gets paired with the pirates against Goobs. Because Dan is only at 4:1, pairing him with Fed would only generate 8:1, which is not a profit since I am making 10 bets. Therefore, bets 9-10 include Lucky and Sproggie from TI as multipliers to ensure there is profit.

Example Set of Bets: A Poor Day
Let's say you have this truly awful set-up:

SW: Goobs (2), Dan (2), Fair (13), Puffo (13)
LA: Buck (2), Tail (2), Luck (5), Stuff (13)
TI: Ned (2), Bonnie (3), Ed (4), Peg (13)
HC: Fed (2), Fran (3), Stripey (5), Cross (7)
HH: Sproggie (2), Black (4), Orvinn (13), Squire (13)

Here's how I would set up my bets for the day.

1. Goobs x Buck x Sproggie (8:1)
2. Dan x Buck x Sproggie (8:1)
3. Goob x Tail x Sproggie (8:1)
4. Dan x Tail x Sproggie (8:1)
5. Lucky x Sproggie (10:1)
6. Goobs x Sproggie (4:1)
7. Dan x Sproggie (4:1)
8. Goobs x Beard (8:1)
9. Dan x Beard (8:1)
10. Beard (4:1)

Clearly we aren't going to make as much profit as on a good day, but every little bit matters if you are going for a trophy run or if you just like to make neopoints (and who doesn't?). Plus, it's a matter of pride. I don't like to deliberately skip betting when the odds are poor. I made up this set-up; I actually haven't ever seen it this terrible except maybe once or twice, so don't run and hide just yet! If something like this does come up, you'll be well-prepared for it :)

Choosing the arenas to bet in is the thing to consider on a day like this. SW and HH are the best because they only have two viable potential winners. We can't even consider covering a starting 13:1 here unless you want to leave something else uncovered (and on a day like this, that might actually be a better strategy; keep reading to the end). We're staying out of HC because there are four pirates to cover there, and we just don't have the bets for it. On a good day, an arena like HC wouldn't necessarily be a problem. Because we have to use Goobs and Dan as multipliers, it cuts our bets in half because whatever we do for one pirate, we have to mirror that with the other. The same is true of Buck and Tail to an extent.

Today we're aiming to hit one or two bets to make profit. Anything below 10:1 will make us lose money, but those little 4:1 bets will stack on top of the 8:1s and give us 12:1 in total.

Bets 1-4 cover the basic 2:1s in SW, LA and HH. Bet 5 covers a Stripey upset while 6-7 boost the 8:1 Sproggie bets to 12:1. Bets 8-10 cover Blackbeard. Note that I chose to combine Goobs and Dan with Blackbeard rather than use Buck and Tail. This is because I don't have the bets to safety a Stripey x Beard combo. This way if both those pirates win, I still profit off the Blackbeard bets. Buck and Tail are used solely to boost profit on Sproggie, thus Lucky's safety only needs to be with Sproggie.

So it's a pretty safe set, but a very boring set. On days like this, I get very tempted to throw caution out the window and make riskier moves. I figure if I'm going to make a measly 12:1 anyway, why not risk a loss and aim higher? If I'm not particularly confident about a certain pirate then I will stick with this set, but let's say someone like Stripey or Tails has been on a very long losing streak or has +5 FA. If I see a situation like that, I'll treat them like a lone 2:1 in an arena full of 13:1s and ten-bet them, or close to it. I can afford the loss if I'm wrong; you should stick with the safe bets if you are watching your neopoints.
